411 MMA Rankings 06.02.09: Light Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 06.02.2009

The UFC crowned a new champion over a week ago and MACHIDAMANIA has swept the MMA community like a twister. If you didn't know by now, I guess I will spoil it for you. Lyoto Machida is the brand new #1 ranked light heavyweight in the world thanks to his domination of Rashad Evans at UFC 98. Machida has not taken a serious punch in a long time and appears invincible at times.

Other fighters in action since April include Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Vladimir Matyushenko who fought at small shows to keep active. Right now, it's unclear whether either man will be fighting at Affliction: Trilogy in August.

There is a surprise in this month's list as a fresh face found his way onto the list for the first time. This fighter is a fan favorite at a young point in his career and will be fighting soon on pay-per-view. The hints end there, get to reading!

Unlike other divisions, this may be the most active. Of the UFC-contracted fighters, all except Luiz Cane have fights scheduled in the near future. This list will continue changing based on those results as we shake-out the question marks and find out who truly is the best fighter after going toe-to-toe with one another. It all gets started in less than two weeks when Wanderlei Silva fights Rich Franklin. The winner will definitely find their way in the top-10 and the loser, may or may not find themselves outside the top-15 club. That is for the classy 411 MMA brain trust to decide...and decide, we will.

To the feedback...

mark23 has an idea for the next welterweight title challenger, "Whos gonna fight the winner of alves gsp fight?swick?(if healthy).
I think Swick needs at least two more wins before he gets a shot at the championship. If successful at UFC 100, Jon Fitch deserves another title shot. However, if Joe Silva & Dana White want some fresh blood in there, Swick may get the opportunity. If not them, there's always Matt Hughes. I doubt he gets a shot unless he can win another fight or two, though.

cyks still doesn't see Josh Koscheck, "Kos loses 2 of his last 3 and somehow still makes top 5... while the guy who last beat him is 11-0 and couldn't even make the top 15. WTF?"
Paulo Thiago may be 11-0, but besides Koscheck, what significant name has he beaten? Not that he hasn't, but we just don't know. Meanwhile, Koscheck's previous two defeats were a decision to Thiago Alves (a fight he took on short notice and gave up a ton of weight) and a decision to Georges St. Pierre. If not Koscheck, who should be in the top five? Paulo Thiago is an unknown quantity at this point.

Woody is scratching his head regarding HOFer Hughes, "Hughes, great as his track record is, is 2-3 in last five fights. The guy below him, Martin Kampmann, is 4-1. Me? I'm scratching my head about this."
Personally, I had Kampmann higher than Matt Hughes (and Carlos Condit, but that's a whole different story). As for the ranking, I will defend it as such. Hughes's three recent losses were to GSP and Thiago Alves. Same as I said for Koscheck, they are the two of the best in the division. It's how much do you want to punish the guy for fighting top competition? Kampmann, while 4-1, is only 2-0 as a welterweight and has one huge win, that being over Condit.

The Karo Parisyan-questions begin, starting with Last Rider, "I don't think Hughes should be ranked as high as he is, but to each their own I guess. The Condit/Kampmann thing is very strange, but mathematical anomalies happen in polling. My only real issue will be with one fighter, Karo being ranked. He's been totally lackluster in his last several fights. He looks half asleep when fighting and probably shouldn't be in the top 15. Still, interesting to see how the guys here break down rankings."
Not to sound like a broken record, but personally, I did not have Karo Parisyan in my top-15. With that said, Parisyan's only loss via finish was against Thiago Alves. Parisyan has wins over Drew Fickett, Josh Burkman and Ryo Chonan. Now that group may not be championship caliber, but Parisyan fought and beat the guys on the opposite side of the cage. Some, I assume, overlook Parisyan's personal issues and lackluster performances and look at the 'win column' and remember a time when he was set to receive a title shot. Me, I have been unimpressed with Parisyan for awhile and think he should have lost the fight with Yoshiyuki Yoshida (a decision is a decision though, even though it ended up being ruled a No-Contest).

Tim continues where Last Rider left off, "How is someone who is barred from competition a current top 15 fighter? Why not include dead guys too? They have the same shot at fighting."
The fact that Karo Parisyan is serving a suspension does not take anything away from the mans skills or recent fight history (well, I guess it did take away a win against Yoshida, haha). He cannot fight until December or January (I believe) and if he does not fight as of January 31, 2010 (and has no planned fights), he will be removed from our rankings. Equating a suspension with death, makes no sense.

Thanks for the feedback.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- A fighter must fight at least once within the past calendar year to be ranked. The rule applies to weight classes as well so fighters must stay active inside their native weight class. However, if a fighter has a fight scheduled, they are eligible to be ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and write in a language that has the ability to be read by most, if not all. That would be most helpful. Thank you.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the staff of 411mania. Therefore, if you don't like where a fighter is ranked, don't hate the playa, hate the game.

411's Official MMA Rankings: Light Heavyweight Division

Light Heavyweight Division (205 lbs)

1) Lyoto Machida (15-0)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: May 3, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Rashad Evans - Win via knockout (punches) - UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida - May 23, 2009

- vs. Thiago Silva - Win via knockout (punches) - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn 2 - January 31, 2009

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 84: Ill Will - May 24, 2008

- vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou - Win via submission (arm triangle choke) - UFC 79: Nemesis - December 29, 2007

- vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Shogun Rua - UFC 104 - October 24, 2009

Comment: MACHIDA KARATE~! He knocked out the best light heavyweight in the world and now, he is one of the most popular fighters on the globe. It is clear as we stand today, Lyoto Machida is the best light heavyweight in the world. He appears unstoppable and the first man to get the chance to take the gold from his waist; Shogun Rua.

2) Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (30-7)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: June 20, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Keith Jardine - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine - March 7, 2009

- vs. Wanderlei Silva - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008 - December 27, 2008

- vs. Forrest Griffin - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin - July 5, 2008

- vs. Dan Henderson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion - September 8, 2007

- vs. Chuck Liddell - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson - May 26, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- Coach on TUF10: Heavyweights (and to fight Rashad Evans later in 2009)

Comment: Jackson sits and watches the men around him swap spots. In the aftermath of the title change, he chose to coach on TUF and fight Rashad Evans later in the year. Seems like a smart decision after the unfinished business between the two stemming from their showdown after the main event at UFC 96.

3) Rashad Evans (13-1-1)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: September 25, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Loss via knockout (punches) - UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida - May 23, 2009

- vs. Forrest Griffin - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008 - December 27, 2008

- vs. Chuck Liddell - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 88: Breakthrough - September 6, 2008

- vs. Michael Bisping - Win via decision (split) - UFC 78: Validation - November 17, 2007

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Draw - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- Coach on TUF10: Heavyweights (and to fight Quinton Jackson later in 2009)

Comment: Rashad drops from the top spot in April to number three after his loss at UFC 98. They say you're not a champion until you defend the belt and that may follow Evans around until he can get a second opportunity to do so. Now, Rashad will be a coach on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, which began taping yesterday, opposite Rampage Jackson. The TV exposure should lead to some fun experiences for viewers as Rashad can be one charismatic dude. The question is, will he be "on" during the season.

4) Forrest Griffin (16-5)

Height: 6'3

Birthday: July 1, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Rashad Evans - Loss by TKO (punches) - UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008 - December 27, 2008

- vs. Mauricio Rua - Win by submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007

- vs. Hector Ramirez - Win by decision (unanimous) - UFC 72: Victory - July 16, 2007

- vs. Keith Jardine - Loss by TKO (punches) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz 2 - December 30, 2006

- vs. Alistair Overeem - Win via KO (strikes) - PRIDE 33: Second Coming - February 24, 2007

- vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Lyoto Machida - UFC 104 - October 24, 2009

Comment: After Rampage Jackson made his decision to fight Rashad Evans, the luck fell to Shogun Rua. Well, I guess that depends on your definition of luck. Shogun will have the first crack at the new champion after constructing a two-fight win streak.

6) Keith Jardine (14-5-1)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: October 31, 1975

- vs. Quinton Jackson - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson - May 26, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- "Retired"

Comment: Now Liddell is saying he will take some time off and decide then whether he will retire or not. So, he remains eligible to be ranked. There was some debate amongst the 411 MMA Staff as to whether the future Hall of Famer deserved a top-15 ranking. Is he still one of the best in the world?

14) Vladimir Matyushenko (22-4)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: January 4, 1971

Currently Fighting With: Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jason Lambert - Win via decision (unanimous) - Call to Arms 1 - May 16, 2009

- vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira - Loss via TKO (strikes) - Affliction: Day Of Reckoning - January 24, 2009

- vs. Tim Boetsch - Win via decision (unanimous) - IFL - 2007 Semifinals - August 2, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Currently Unknown

15) Jonathan Jones (8-0)

Height: 6'4

Birthday: July 19, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Stephan Bonnar - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn 2 - January 31, 2009

- vs. Andre Gusmao - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 87: Seek and Destroy - August 9, 2008

- vs. Moyses Gabin - Win via TKO (punches) - Battle Cage Xtreme 5 - July 12, 2008

- vs. Parker Porter - Win via KO (punch) - WCF 3 - June 20, 2008

- vs. Ryan Verrett - Win via TKO (punches) - USFL: War in the Woods 3 - May 9, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Jake O'Brien - UFC 100 - July 11, 2009

Comment: The man known as "Bones" makes his first appearance on our list. He may have won his two UFC fights by decisions but he has impressed many with his use of wrestling inside the octagon. Jones is now the youngest fighter among the top-15 light heavyweights in the world. By the way, is that german suplex (pictured above) sweet or what?

Final Notes: Others receiving votes include Dan Henderson, Brandon Vera, and Steve Cantwell.

Tito Ortiz is no longer eligible to be ranked. It has been more than a year since he last fought and there are no plans for his return to the cage/ring.

With Gegard Mousasi now scheduled to fight Babalu Sobral at the Affliction show in August, it is possible he will earn a spot on this list at that time.

I'll say it once, i'll say it again, and I'll keep saying it: Machida still = BOOOOOORING.

Even though Franklin is still new to this weight, doesn't he deserve to be ranked higher? 2 of his losses are at middleweight and it's not like he's unproven as a fighter. Show him some love.

Silva still ranked so high? Have you guys watched his last five fights? You don't even have to watch the whole fight, just the end where his hand is not raised. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Oh, and by the way, I'll squash all the controversy now. You can take The Iceman off your rankings. He's finished. Make room for someone else. Maybe him and Matt Serra should cut weight and join the lightweights.

That's probably exactly what you do with Machida fights - watch only the end when the hand is raised.
And that\s why, you think, you have your reasons to call him boring.
Hypocrite

Wandi should be moved down to (at least) 12th... moving everyone up a notch.

Posted By: cyks (Guest)  on June 02, 2009 at 12:57 AM

With Machida on top suddenly this division seems very shallow....

Posted By: Guest#7178 (Guest)  on June 02, 2009 at 01:38 AM

Luis Cane getting love! Yay. I would rate him ahead of Jardine, but that's me.

Also if Mousasi beats Babalu, INSTANT top 10. No question.

A lot of people are jealous that "their guy" isn't the top of the division. That is the only reason they have to hate on Machida...

i try not to spend a lot of my time debating the merits of highly subjective lists... but you've angered me sufficiently!

the top 5 is great - agree 100%. but jardine at 6? oh my God! in 2 years he's beaten a hack in vera and happened to be in the ring at the same time as a chuck liddel having a bad night.

i love wandy - he was the sole reason that i always preferred pride to ufc. but he has been terrible in ufc. your number 9 ranked LHW will be in danger of losing his job if he loses in a couple of weeks.

one loss does not mean thiago silva should be down at 12 - he's beaten good (though not great) opponents over the last couple of years and lost to the guy who went on to win the ufc lhw belt. should be top 8. balabu should also be higher - i know the guys he's fighting aren't the greatest 205 fighters in the world... but when ufc's 205 division doesn't want you, you can only heat the guys put in front of you.

Seems as if the uneducated can not see the forest for the trees!

Since when did being an exciting fighter make you the best?

This ranking is about skill and ability, things Machida has a very high level of, something GeeSpotter obviously does not have.

As for being boring Machida has finished 3 of his last 4 apponents with 2 KO's and a submision. It's hard not to enjoy (for the true MMA fan) watching the skill and ability that Machida shows in his fights.

Machida should sit on top of this division for along time. It is hard to find a fighter at 205 who can take the title from him!

Will you finally drop Wanderlei from the rankings if he loses to Rich Franklin? (or well.. doesn't really matter since he's moving to 185)

Whoo! Jon Jones!

...That is all.

Posted By: Wyatt Beougher (Guest)  on June 02, 2009 at 01:47 PM

gotta agree with what Andy wrote. Jardine is way too high. Having him above Babalu, Lil Nog, and Cane especially doesn't make much sense. Wanderlei is a little high as well

Posted By: guest guest (Guest)  on June 02, 2009 at 02:06 PM

Okay, Jardine should NOT be ranked 6. Aside from beating Griffin in late 2006, he's beaten Liddell who shouldn't really be ranked anymore, and a bunch of guys like Vera, Gouveia and Whitehead who wouldn't even TOUCH a rankings list.

On the flipside, he's like the only man to have lost to Wanderlei in YEARS, and only the fact that he wasn't KO'ed by Rampage goes in his favour. Add to that he's LOST to non-rankers like Alexander and Bonnar and that's a huge load of crap when Thiago Silva, Rogerio Nogueira, Matyuschenko and Babalu have been consistently winning in similar fights (to Houston and Stephan).

Jardine would be lucky to be tenth, IMO.
