411 MMA Rankings 06.09.09: Middleweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 06.09.2009
The Anderson Silva Middleweight Rankings return with some movement among the top 15 in the division. Robbie Lawler was submitted by Jake Shields, Mayhem and Jacare could not complete their fight, what are the consequences? Read on to check out all the great summer fights and where Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson are as they coach on TUF9. All that and much more this week.
Welcome to another dose of your weekly 411mania MMA Rankings. This week your favorite staffers present the best middleweights in the world. There was not a ton of action since the last time we presented them, but three fighters saw action. Just days ago, top-five fighter Robbie Lawler was choked out in minutes by welterweight Jake Shields. Did the loss, outside of the division (it was fought at a catchweight, albeit at 182 lbs.) hurt Lawler at all? I will say that on some ballots, it did not. A few weeks back at the DREAM show in Japan, Jason Miller fought Jacare Souza in a fight to determine their new middleweight champion. Sadly, the fight was stopped after an illegal kick from Miller cut Souza and forced the. So 'No Contest' ruling. Souza was not too happy about Miller's choice of words inside the ring and lets just say, bad blood is a flowing.
Frank Trigg signed with the UFC recently and by all accounts will stay at welterweight so he is absent this month from these rankings. He placed #15 last time so you are guaranteed a brand new fighter on the list. I can guarantee Frank Shamrock is nowhere to be seen though, sadly.
Something else to follow in the coming weeks and months is the list of great fights on tap. To name a few, Henderson/Bisping, Silva/Griffin, Belfort/Santiago, Maia/Marquardt and others. You can bet this list will be changing, even if only slightly. The question that may be put to our staff is in the (RARE) event of an Anderson Silva defeat. He is fighting Forrest Griffin at light heavyweight, so should the fight have an impact on Silva's ranking here?
Before we head to feedback to last week's light heavyweight rankings, here's a quick shout out to other 411 writers you should be checking out.
GeeSpotter will be interested in the UFC 99 main event, "I'll say it once, i'll say it again, and I'll keep saying it: Machida still = BOOOOOORING....Even though Franklin is still new to this weight, doesn't he deserve to be ranked higher? 2 of his losses are at middleweight and it's not like he's unproven as a fighter. Show him some love....Silva still ranked so high? Have you guys watched his last five fights? You don't even have to watch the whole fight, just the end where his hand is not raised. You should be ashamed of yourselves." Lyoto Machida just knocked two fighters the hell out. How is he still BOOORING? I feel after UFC 99, all your concerns about Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin will subside. One will jump and the other shall fall....a long way (possibly).
A Karate fan/Machida fan answers back, "That's probably exactly what you do with Machida fights - watch only the end when the hand is raised. And thats why, you think, you have your reasons to call him boring. Hypocrite" I assume he missed UFC 94 and UFC 98.
Cyks is back with Silva thoughts, "Wandi should be moved down to (at least) 12th... moving everyone up a notch." He's still Wanderlei Silva, you don't think he's a top 10 fighter anymore? It's debatable, that's for sure.
Brad is glad for Cane, "Luis Cane getting love! Yay. I would rate him ahead of Jardine, but that's me. Also if Mousasi beats Babalu, INSTANT top 10. No question." Cane doesn't get a lot of love because he's not a talker and he's not thought of in the same realm as popular guys like Franklin, Silva, Jardine, etc. But you cannot argue with his success. As for Mousasi, instant top 10? Not sure about that, but if he can win at Affliction 3, he should definitely be added to the list, somewhere.
David theorizes about the Machida hate, "A lot of people are jealous that "their guy" isn't the top of the division. That is the only reason they have to hate on Machida." I don't see a good reason to hate on Machida regardless. The only other fighter you could make some semblance of an argument for is Rampage, but he's not the champion. Machida is great.
Andy is not happy, "You've angered me sufficiently!...the top 5 is great - agree 100%. but jardine at 6? oh my God! in 2 years he's beaten a hack in vera and happened to be in the ring at the same time as a chuck liddel having a bad night....i love wandy - he was the sole reason that i always preferred pride to ufc. but he has been terrible in ufc. your number 9 ranked LHW will be in danger of losing his job if he loses in a couple of weeks....one loss does not mean thiago silva should be down at 12 - he's beaten good opponents over the last couple of years and lost to the guy who went on to win the ufc lhw belt. should be top 8. balabu should also be higher - i know the guys he's fighting aren't the greatest 205 fighters in the world... but when ufc's 205 division doesn't want you, you can only beat the guys put in front of you." Jardine may be a bit high, I'll admit that. But, he should definitely be somewhere in the realm of 6-8. He has wins over Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell. He took Rampage to a decision and lost by KOs to Wanderlei and Houston Alexander (before he became a joke). I could see your argument though....I don't see Wanderlei at risk of being cut by the UFC with a loss. He's still Wanderlei friggin Silva. Besides, the plan is for him to drop to middleweight and they have hyped a feud with Anderson Silva. I think his job is safe, besides, Dana White loves the guy....Thiago Silva may have dropped too far after his lost to Machida but many think of Thiago as just a solid fighter, not near the best and not the worst. He's just...there. As for Babalu, he would definitely receive a big boost if he can beat Gegard Mousasi in August. Otherwise, his placement seems just right.
ManoftheClothe is preaching the MACHIDAKARATE, "Since when did being an exciting fighter make you the best? This ranking is about skill and ability, things Machida has a very high level of, something GeeSpotter obviously does not have.
As for being boring Machida has finished 3 of his last 4 apponents with 2 KO's and a submision. It's hard not to enjoy (for the true MMA fan) watching the skill and ability that Machida shows in his fights. Machida should sit on top of this division for along time. It is hard to find a fighter at 205 who can take the title from him!" Machida has turned into an exciting fighter with his unique style. I find it hilarious how he can bob and weave to avoid strikes. The light heavyweight division has changed a lot over the past two years and we may see Rampage return to the throne...if you think he can find a weakness in Machida's game.
Martin wants to know about Wanderlei, "Will you finally drop Wanderlei from the rankings if he loses to Rich Franklin? (or well.. doesn't really matter since he's moving to 185)" It depends on how/if Wanderlei Silva loses to Rich Franklin this Saturday. If he is dominated, it's all about whether the voters feel he's shot as a fighter. Plus, like you mentioned, we will have to discuss if/when we should move Silva to the middleweight rankings.
Wyatt Beougher is thrilled, "Whoo! Jon Jones!...That is all." Happy we could elicit a WOOOOOOO from you.
Jon poses a solid question against Keith Jardine, "Okay, Jardine should NOT be ranked 6. Aside from beating Griffin in late 2006, he's beaten Liddell who shouldn't really be ranked anymore, and a bunch of guys like Vera, Gouveia and Whitehead who wouldn't even TOUCH a rankings list....On the flipside, he's like the only man to have lost to Wanderlei in YEARS, and only the fact that he wasn't KO'ed by Rampage goes in his favour. Add to that he's LOST to non-rankers like Alexander and Bonnar and that's a huge load of crap when Thiago Silva, Rogerio Nogueira, Matyuschenko and Babalu have been consistently winning in similar fights (to Houston and Stephan)....Jardine would be lucky to be tenth." That is the crux of the argument against Jardine being as a high as six. I don't believe many hold the loss to Wanderlei against him. Any man can be knocked out when you fight The Axe Murderer. The losses to Houston and Bonnar may weigh heavily but Jardine was the first guy to finish Griffin in three years. Say what you want about Liddell now, but at the time, he was still a solid fighter. Jardine just bested him on that night. Is Jardine too high at #6? Perhaps, but it's not a crime, it's not like he's top three.
Magog was simple in his approval, "Perfect!" Thanks!
MATRIX may be Keith Jardine's defense lawyer, "Jardine is perrfect where he is. He should've won the decision against Bonnar, which everyone agrees on. He beat Griffin, who people put near the top. He went to decision with the Number 2 ranked guy. And he beat Chuck when it meant something. Jardine is great at 6." That is the thought process when people rank Jardine amongst the top ten.
Thanks for the comments, questions, and love/hate. It's always appreciated

411's MMA Ranking Rules
- A fighter must fight at least once within the past calendar year to be ranked. The rule applies to weight classes as well so fighters must stay active inside their native weight class. However, if a fighter has a fight scheduled, they are eligible to be ranked.
- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and include your own set of rankings if you would!
- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the staff of 411mania. If you wish to duel over any ranking, contact me and we can work something out. I may be busy but I am almost positive 411's resident Tool is available for such occasions. If not, a comment below can serve you just as well.
*Gegard Mousasi was removed from contention by me because he dropped the DREAM middleweight championship w/ the intention to fight at light heavyweight.
*Cung Le (reigning Strikeforce Middleweight Champion) was also removed from contention because he has not fought in more than a year.
*Frank Trigg was too removed from contention because he will fight at welterweight from hereon out.

Comment: Okami is expected to begin training a full regiment in July at the latest. In recent interviews, he expects to be back inside the octagon fighting in September. With the slew of unexciting performances by Anderson Silva, would the UFC consider booking Silva/Okami somewhere down the road?

Comment: So there is a slight backlash in the wake of Lawler's submission defeat at the hands of Jake Shields. Lawler drops one spot. The fight was fought at a catchweight so perhaps some voters did not count it as much as others.

Comment: Maia has fought several tough opponents inside the UFC's Octagon, but none have been a top middleweight like Nate Marquardt. This will be Maia's biggest test to date at UFC 102. A win would shoot Maia up these rankings, guaranteed.

Comment: With Frank Trigg dropping from the division, Matt Lindland hops aboard at #15.
Closing Comments: Others receiving votes include Denis Kang and Joey Villasenor.
Honestly, Bisping should be higher. other than that, this lsit proves one thing. Lyoto Machida doesn't have the luxury Anderson Silva does in a very very VERY thin division of challengers.
Not to suggest Silva wouldn't fare just as well, but man, he really DOES have it easy at the moment.

"As for Mousasi, instant top 10? Not sure about that, but if he can win at Affliction 3, he should definitely be added to the list, somewhere."
I can see your point, but I would argue that Mousasi -if he beats Babalu- would have defeated Kang, Jacare and Babalu. That's 3 top 15 guys over two divisions and definately warrants consideration.
Posted By: Brad (Guest) on June 09, 2009 at 01:14 AM
Bisping has looked good in his last few fights, I'll admit, but I really disagree with AdamS. He's only fought 3 times in the division, and against lower calibre opponents. Leben is a fun guy to watch fight, but he crumbles against well-rounded fighters (i.e. anybody in the top 20). Before that, Bisping fought a bunch of tin cans at light heavy before getting getting the worst decision victory I have personally ever seen against Hamill, and a loss against Rashad (also a light light heavyweight) in a terribly plodding fight.
**IF** he beats Hendo, Bisping's stock will rise tremendously. Until then, he's just beat a bunch of mediocre/one-dimensional fighters.

Honestly apart from SIlva, hendo and maybe Maia this division really sucks. No talent whatsoever. They should just demolish it and move every1 to either light heavy or welterweight. THis
This is where all the LWH REJECTS go. Thats why I dont buy into that bullshit of silva being pound for pound. To be the best u oatta beat the best go to LWH otherwise. Fedor/machida p4p!

I'm that idiot, apex. I'm also the idiot that knows how to spell and properly use grammar. You should try it sometime

Mayhem shouldn't be on here. He's a sideshow attraction at best. I would have put Denis Kang or Rousimar Palhares on here myself.

You know whilst in a frantic type outlining your obvious wrongs, there is no need to spell correctly, people ( real people not your idiot friends ) would have immediatly realised i was right and not given a damn about the spelling, which wasnt all bad. however since you chose not to defend your comment but simply pick up on an underlying fact of the comment to reply too - i herby declare you MMA nonse of the month. Congratulations you WWE loving, constantly getting knocked out or tapped pathetic excuse of a MMA fan ! also not every country spells words fan-net-ically - SPA!!!

Maia should be way higher and Lawler should be lower. What do you think would happen if they fought now? Maia's jits is even better than Shields.
Posted By: Diavo (Guest) on June 09, 2009 at 11:43 AM
good list. I think Maia is too low tho, and Lawler is too high. I mean really, Lawler beat Scott Smith; big deal. Maia has finished everyone I've seen him face without much trouble including the rightful WEC 185 champ, and a former UFC title contender.
Posted By: guest guest (Guest) on June 09, 2009 at 12:50 PM
Not too much to argue with here... I think Robbie may be a tad high, but with the caliber of his opponents- it makes sense.
Yushin being #3 also seems a bit off, but with a lack of real contenders right now... I'm sure he'll have dropped a few notches by the time he can fight again.
Anyone else who I feel should move- has a huge fight in the next 2-3 months so that should answer any real questions.

Can't really argue with a lot of that, although I'd expect Akiyama and Santiago could beat a lot of the others on the list. Maia WILL be higher when he beats Marquadt, but I think he's about right.
Leites looks a bit low though. I don't get why the gap between Marquadt and him is so big, considering Leites only lost once and BEAT Marquadt to boot. Maybe it's Maia-syndrome - needs a couple big wins before he gets catapulted up the rankings even if he IS better.
Fair play mate.

Marquadt has looked completely dominating in his recent fights. Leites, not so much. Even in his 'win' against Marquadt, Marquadt was deducted 2 points and Leites still barely won by split decision.... not to mention, his showing against Silva was incredibly bad- and showed that he's completely one dimensional, lost on his feet, and that he has no business in the top 10.
Maia is a different story- at least he looks good, although he does need better opponents.
