The Lowdown 06.13.09: Wanderlei Silva
Posted by Frank Fedele on 06.13.2009
Last week we looked at the once and present king of the Featherweight division, Mike Brown. His five round victory over Urijah Faber kept the belt around his waist. This week we are going to look at a veteran of MMA and one of the headliners for this weekends UFC 99 Wanderlei Silva. Join us as we look at the Axe Murderer in this weeks Lowdown.
Last Week Roundup
Mike Brown continues to prove to the world that he is legit and a worthy champion in the WEC Featherweight division. Urijah Faber fought hard with a broken hand, but in the end the fight belonged to Brown. There will be a number of young fighters coming up to challenge him in the near future with Brazilian Jose Aldo making a statement that he should be at the front of the line with a vicious eight second win over Cub Swanson. Aldo's flying knee practically took Swanson's head off and had me jumping off the couch. Just a great event overall in the WEC and whets our appetite for the UFCs latest card, UFC 99. The headline fight has Rich Franklin facing the subject of this weeks Lowdown, Wanderlei Silva.
Background
Wanderlei Silva was one of the first fighters whose fights I followed religiously. In the early days of MMA, I leaned more toward the fights out of Japan in Pride rather than the UFC in the US. I started initially watching Pride to see the Gracie's fight, but a young Brazilian with a deadly stare got my attention quickly. The first fight that got my attention was a vicious knockout of Guy Metzger in Pride 10 in 2000. Pride was beginning to add a Middleweight title to their ranks and Silva and a Japanese fighter, Kazushi Sakuraba would battle for it.
Sakuraba was another favorite. Nicknamed the Gracie hunter for his ability to take out members of the Gracie clan with his unorthodox style. Sakuraba was a Professional Wrestler in Japan and would strike from odd angles and always played up to the crowd that was rabid to see a Japanese fighter do well. Silva would first face Sakuraba in Pride 13, ending the fight with a TKO to claim the Middleweight crown. This would begin a six year reign that ended in 2007 with a loss to Dan Henderson.
Silva versus Sakuraba
Previous Fights
Silva's run through Pride during that time was legendary. Opponents such as Dan Henderson, Hidehiko Yoshida, Kiyoshi Tamura, Quinton Jackson and a number of fights with rival Sakuraba. Silva was always exciting and always looked to knock his opponent out. Silva though started showing his age in late 2006, losing to Croatian kickboxer Mirko Cro Cop in Pride Final Conflict Absolute. This would start a run of three straight losses for Silva and also mark his entry in the octagon of the UFC.
Silva versus Jackson
Silva had spent some time in the UFC Early in his career with a win versus Tony Petarra in UFC 20, a loss to Vitor Belfort in UFC: Ultimate Brazil and a loss to Tito Ortiz in UFC 25. In 2003, Dana White and Chuck Liddell came to Pride to participate in the Middleweight Grand Prix. White's hope was for Liddell to make it to the finals and face off against Silva. A win against Silva on his home turf would help show that the UFC had the dominant fighters, not Pride. Alas, this was not to be as Liddell lost early in the Grand Prix to Alistair Overeem. White still wanted that fight to occur though and jumped at the chance to bring Silva into the UFC in 2007. There in UFC 79 Liddell would finally beat Silva in a great fight. Silva would get a win back against Keith Jardine, but would then lose to Quinton Jackson in UFC 92 by knockout in the 1st round. This helped Jackson avenge his earlier loss to Silva in Pride.

People wonder how much Silva has left in the tank. He is still capable of great and exciting fights; he is just coming out on the losing side more often now. Age will do that to you.
Wanderlei Silva
Final Thoughts
Silva's next fight will decide how much fight he has left in the UFC. Franklin is a smaller fighter than he has been fighting and might be a better fit for him. I think Silva will come out on top, but that just may be the echoes I still see of a dominant fighter in Japan.

Liddell lost to Rampage in that tournament, not Overeem.
Also, I'm not sure he really showed much aging in losing to Cro Cop - Cro Cop was a heavyweight and while some might argue that Wandy came in heavy for that fight, Mirko is still taller and his straight punching was the perfect antidote to Silva's looping, aggressive punches. That fight should've really been stopped, Silva's eye was nearly swollen shut, but he pleaded his way out of it...and ended up getting KOed.
It really remains to be seen what he has left. He lost to Liddell and Rampage in the UFC so far, and there's no real shame in that. If his drop to MW isn't successful though, it may well be his time to retire.

Pretty nice analysis of Wandy, but you seem to forget; it's not really "age" showing on Wanderlei, its just time. He's only 32; it's just he's taken so many knocks and blows that he's gonna be able to get KO'd easier. Thats pretty much why Minotauro lost to Mir by TKO wasn't all because of Mir's improved striking.
All in all good, just a little nitpick. I guess the term MMAge is better than just straight age.

I don't get why you're harping on about age... He's 33. It's more a matter of punishment taken.

Silva would first face Sakuraba in Pride 13, ending the fight with a TKO to claim the Middleweight crown.
Actually while Silva did defeat Sakuraba at PRIDE 13, he didn't claim the middleweight crown.
He won the title in their second fight at PRIDE 17.

In MMA, 33 is getting to be pretty old for that sport.
