411 MMA Rankings 06.16.09: Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 06.16.2009

Welcome back to a busy heavyweight MMA Rankings presented by 411mania. It has been a busy month and these rankings are shaking. That doesn't even include several of the top ranked fighters who will be fighting later in the summer. Here is the quick rundown of active fighters. Tim Sylvia was knocked out by Ray Mercer, Andrei Arlovski was knocked out (again) by Brett Rogers, Cain Velasquez dominated Cheick Kongo on the ground, Mirko Cro Cop accidentally poked Mustapha Al-Turk in the eye and won and Fedor and Josh Barnett play fought around Mauro Ranallo.

I will spoil it for you right here, TIM SYLVIA IS GONE. He was #12 in May and now he is unranked. Some (including Jens Pulver) were under the impression Sylvia was taking the former pro boxing champion Ray Mercer too lightly. He was correct. Sylvia was knocked out in about ten seconds to boot. Hell, Ray Mercer matched Fedor Emelianenko's dominance over Sylvia. Imagine that (not the Eddie Murphy movie). The loss set MMA back, it will take time to see how badly. Thanks Timmy~!

No, Ray Mercer is not ranked. Although maybe he should be.

The next time we rank the heavyweights, it will be the end of July and this list may explode if CRAZY continues in MMA.

Here's some feedback to last week's pound for pound rankings.

From AdamS, "Honestly, Bisping should be higher. other than that, this list proves one thing. Lyoto Machida doesn't have the luxury Anderson Silva does in a very very VERY thin division of challengers. Not to suggest Silva wouldn't fare just as well, but man, he really DOES have it easy at the moment."
Well, Bisping has not fought any top competition inside the middleweight division. He's still young in that regard, so it is going to be tough to break high into the rankings until he does so. Hence, his day is coming (7/11). The light heavyweight division has been the strongest and the premiere weight class for the UFC for several years. It's just a fact of life.

From Brad, "I can see your point {re: Mousasi in the top lhvy 10 with a win over Sobral}, but I would argue that Mousasi -if he beats Babalu- would have defeated Kang, Jacare and Babalu. That's 3 top 15 guys over two divisions and definately warrants consideration."
Mousasi deserves to be high on whatever list he is on, as long as he can defeat both Babalu Sobral and Sokoudjou later this year. He has wins over very stout competition, like you mentioned, in various weight classes. He's a serious competitor.

From Nick, "Bisping has looked good in his last few fights, I'll admit, but I really disagree with AdamS. He's only fought 3 times in the division, and against lower calibre opponents. Leben is a fun guy to watch fight, but he crumbles against well-rounded fighters (i.e. anybody in the top 20). Before that, Bisping fought a bunch of tin cans at light heavy before getting getting the worst decision victory I have personally ever seen against Hamill, and a loss against Rashad (also a light light heavyweight) in a terribly plodding fight. **IF** he beats Hendo, Bisping's stock will rise tremendously. Until then, he's just beat a bunch of mediocre/one-dimensional fighters."
Yep, I agree with you. Bisping has to do well against top 185 competition to be considered among the top contenders.

from hhHh, "Honestly apart from SIlva, hendo and maybe Maia this division really sucks. No talent whatsoever. They should just demolish it and move every1 to either light heavy or welterweight. This is where all the LWH REJECTS go. Thats why I dont buy into that bullshit of silva being pound for pound. To be the best u oatta beat the best go to LWH otherwise. Fedor/machida p4p!"
Everyone but those three mentioned suck? Yushin Okami is 23-4 with two of the losses against Jake Shields and Rich Franklin. Plus, he has a win over Anderson Silva (albeit a DQ win). Robbie Lawler is tough as is Nate Marquardt. It's not deep by any means but there is some talent here.

Adam says, "Mayhem shouldn't be on here. He's a sideshow attraction at best. I would have put Denis Kang or Rousimar Palhares on here myself."
What's wrong with Miller? Certainly he's one of the top middleweights. Not good enough for the top 15? The common thing about the names mentioned above, they have all struggled recently, but are potentially top 10-caliber talents. I would have no problem with either of the three appearing on the list frankly.

Diavo makes a case for Demian Maia at the expense of Robbie Lawler, "Maia should be way higher and Lawler should be lower. What do you think would happen if they fought now? Maia's jits is even better than Shields."
Maia is at #9 right now. How much higher should he be? Is he a top five caliber guy at this point? His biggest win has been against Chael Sonnen (although it was a smooth submission win, can't deny that). Like Bisping, Maia will be fighting a top-tier contender shortly (vs. Marquardt at UFC 102 in late-August). With a win there, I guarantee you Maia will jump up the board. As for Lawler (@ #5), he was caught by Shields. Yes, Maia would likely catch Lawler but what if Lawler doesn't make the same mistake? What if? Right now, Lawler has fought better competition in his career which is why he's higher on the list right now.

Good 'ol Cyks is back. "Not too much to argue with here... I think Robbie may be a tad high, but with the caliber of his opponents- it makes sense. Yushin being #3 also seems a bit off, but with a lack of real contenders right now... I'm sure he'll have dropped a few notches by the time he can fight again. Anyone else who I feel should move- has a huge fight in the next 2-3 months so that should answer any real questions."
Once you get past the top two 185ers (Silva & Hendo), there is a drop off. Is there that big a difference between Okami, Marquardt, Lawler, etc. at the three spot? I don't see it right now. As you mentioned, many of the guys on the list have fights coming up and will sort itself out.

Jon says, "Can't really argue with a lot of that, although I'd expect Akiyama and Santiago could beat a lot of the others on the list. Maia WILL be higher when he beats Marquadt, but I think he's about right. Leites looks a bit low though. I don't get why the gap between Marquadt and him is so big, considering Leites only lost once and BEAT Marquadt to boot. Maybe it's Maia-syndrome - needs a couple big wins before he gets catapulted up the rankings even if he IS better. Fair play mate."
I have some doubts about Akiyama but Santiago is a great fighter, indeed. While Leites did beat Marquardt, it was a razor thin, split decision. Having your lone loss against Anderson Silva though, perhaps he should be higher than #13. As for the large difference between Marquardt and Leites, perhaps it's a backlash from the boring fight with Silva that Leites had. Otherwise, Leites just doesn't get a lot of publicity.

Cyks responds to Jon, "Marquadt has looked completely dominating in his recent fights. Leites, not so much. Even in his 'win' against Marquadt, Marquadt was deducted 2 points and Leites still barely won by split decision.... not to mention, his showing against Silva was incredibly bad- and showed that he's completely one dimensional, lost on his feet, and that he has no business in the top 10. Maia is a different story- at least he looks good, although he does need better opponents."

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we are not dangerous at all, I won't lie to you.

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Frank Mir - UFC 100 - July 11, 2009

Comment: It is reasonable to believe Brock can shoot up to the #2 spot with a UFC 100 win and a Barnett loss on August 1st. For the record, if they should ever fight, I will pick Brock Lesnar to defeat Cain Velasquez. You heard it here first~!

5) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-5-1)

Last 5 fights:

vs. Gary Goodridge - Win via submission (kimura) - Glory 10: Battle of Arnhem - November 9, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Brett Rogers - Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg - August 15, 2009 (RUMOR)

Comment: Still not official, it is assumed Overeem will fight for Strikeforce in August. If not, it would be another blow to the promotion (albeit, not a major one) that cannot book their own heavyweight champion. His possible opponent will either be Rogers or Paul Buentello (if Tim Sylvia cannot fight him).

8) Cain Velasquez (6-0)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 242

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Cheick Kongo - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 99: The Comeback - June 13, 2009

- vs. Jeremiah Constant - Win via TKO - BodogFIGHT: St Petersburg - December 16, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- Currently Unknown

Comment: Velasquez makes his first appearance inside the Top 10, with a big performance against Cheick Kongo. The problem with Cain may be he lacks ground and pound power, but until he fights someone who can stop his takedowns, he should be fine. Some believe Velasquez has the tools to become the best heavyweight in the world. In time, we shall see.

9) Shane Carwin (11-0)

Height: 6'1

Weight: 259

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine - March 7, 2009

- vs. Neil Wain - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben - October 18, 2008

- vs. Christian Wellisch - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 84: Ill Will - May 24, 2008

- vs. Sherman Pendergarst - win via TKO (strikes) - Ring of Fire 31: Undisputed - December 1, 2007

- vs. Rex Richards - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - Art of War 4 - October 27, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- Currently Unknown

10) Gabriel Gonzaga (10-4)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 252

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Shane Carwin - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine - March 7, 2009

- vs. Josh Hendricks - Win via KO (punches) - UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar - November 15, 2008

- vs. Justin McCully - Win via submission (kimura) - UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin - July 5, 2008

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Loss via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

- vs. Randy Couture - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Chris Tuchscherer - UFC 102 - August 29, 2009

11) Cheick Kongo (14-5-1)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 230

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Cain Velasquez - Loss via decision - UFC 99: The Comeback - June 13, 2009

- vs. Antoni Hardonk - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 97: Redemption - April 18, 2009

- vs. Mustapha al Turk - Win via TKO (elbows and punches) - UFC 92: Ultimate 2008 - December 27, 2008

- vs. Dan Evensen - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 87: Seek And Destroy - August 9, 2008

- vs. Heath Herring - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 82: Pride of a Champion - March 1, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- Currently Unknown

Comment: This loss really sucks for Kongo. He helped UFC out of a jam when Heath Herring was injured in training. He was on the verge of challenging for the heavyweight title and jumped at the opportunity to fight the up-and-coming Velasquez. Kongo's ground work may have improved since the past, but he was still schooled on that front. However, he did land several BIG punches that rocked Velasquez, albeit not enough to win.

>

12) Andrei Arlovski (13-7)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 240

Currently fighting with: Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Brett Rogers - Loss via TKO (strikes) - Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields - June 6, 2009

- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Loss via KO (punch) - Affliction: Day of Reckoning - January 24, 2009

- vs. Roy Nelson - Win via KO (punch) - EliteXC: Heat - October 4, 2008

- vs. Ben Rothwell - Win via KO (punches) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008

- vs. Jake O'Brien - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 82: Pride of a Champion - March 1, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- Currently Unknown

Comment: Talk about a loss that sucks. Now Arlovski looks like just another heavyweight. One with a bum chin. Any future opponent will make a target on his chin and swing for the fences. It will be assumed that Arlovski will simply be knocked out in his future fights. Plus, his planned boxing career is on ice, if not scratched completely.

13) Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (25-6)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 230

Currently Fighting With: DREAM

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Mustapha Al-Turk - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 99: The Comeback - June 13, 2009

- vs. Hong Man Choi - Win via TKO (low kick) - K-1 Dynamite!! 2008 - December 31, 2008

- vs. Alistair Overeem - No Contest (groin strike) - DREAM 6 - September 23, 2008

- vs. Tatsuya Mizuno - Win via TKO (punches) - DREAM 1 - March 15, 2008

- vs. Cheick Kongo - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion - September 8, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- Currently Unknown

Comment: He played Dana White and the UFC and reportedly is on his way back to DREAM. He won via eye-poke & punches but does anyone think he has what it takes to return to his former superior striking? My question, who will he fight in DREAM?

14) Brett Rogers (10-0)

Height: 6'5

Weight: 265

Currently Fighting With: Strikeforce

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Win via TKO (strikes) - Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields - June 6, 2009

- vs. Abongo Humphrey - Win via TKO (strikes) - Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz - April 11, 2009

- vs. Jon Murphy - Win via TKO (strikes) - EliteXC: Primetime - May 31, 2008

- vs. James Thompson - Win via KO (punch) - EliteXC: Street Certified - February 16, 2008

- vs. Ralph Kelly - Win via submission (strikes) - EliteXC: Renegade - November 10, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Alistair Overeem - Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg - August 15, 2009 (RUMOR)

Comment: Brett Rogers debuts on the list at #14 with the big upset win over the formerly #4 ranked Arlovski. Rogers just knows how to win, he's done it his entire career. If he does fight Overeem in August, it will be a sweet fight against an equally dangerous striker.

15) Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 242

Currently fighting with: Strikeforce

Last 5 wins:

- vs. Junior dos Santos - Loss via TKO (punches) - UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote - October 25, 2008

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Aleksander Emelianenko - Win via submission (choke) - 2H2H - Pride & Honor - November 12, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Currently Unknown

Closing Comments: Others receiving votes include Junior Dos Santos, Heath Herring, Tim Sylvia, Ben Rothwell, Aleksander Emelianenko, Antonio Silva and Jeff Monson.

i'd really like to see junior dos santos in that #15 spot ahead of werdum. werdum looked unimpressive in the santos fight and that stoppage in the Vera win was very questionable. santos on the other hand looked great in his past 2 fights, even though "skyscraper" struve is a step down from werdum, santos showed some great power in that fight. he's on his way to the top #10. i'd love to see a santos vs hardonk matchup

Perfect, not a fault in it. Though you have to wonder how bad the HW division is if Gonzaga is *still* top 10.

I'm so glad Overeem is finally where he should be.

Really like how this list panned out. Basically to a tee of how it should be ranked. Some will argue Rogers should be higher, but thats just because he got a MAJOR upset, but in reality he got lucky, 14 is good for him. Of course beating Overeem would move him up.

I do however feel Mir is the #2 in the world. But as said, it was razor close. If Barnett wins against Fedor... wow. But I fully expect him to lose which would bump Mir up to #2. If Lesnar beats Mir I guess he's #2, but I'd still rank Mir #3 and Barnett #4 if that were to happen.

I don't know if I'd have Alrovski that high on the list, considering his last two losses were utter embarrassments.

C'mon guys. Junior Dos Antos is not even on this ranking list. That makes zero sense. There is no way you can explain that one. What's even more shocking is Werdum is on it.

How is Cain Valosquez over Junior Dos Antos and Shane Carwin? Both Carwin and Dos Antos beat more impressive opponents (and Dos Antos beat his in a more dominating fashion). It doesn't make sense!

On another note, Arvloski should not even be top 15. He's in the same boat as Tim Sylvia.

Fedor should NOT be #1. Hello his last two "impressive" wins came from Tim "rush and I balk" Sylvia and Andre "please dont touch the porcelien chin" Arlovski.

BROCK is #1. He will STEAMROLL through Fedor

Posted By: g-man (Guest)  on June 16, 2009 at 04:02 AM

Frank Mir is #1 on my list. He is in the prime of his career, his jits is top shelf for a HW and now his striking is coming around. Until Fedor fights in the UFC I can't rank him #1. Mir will beat Lesnar in July and defend his title 2 or 3 times before he is challenged.

Brock Steam Roll Fedor ??? ROFL one of the funniest things ive ever read I love Brock hes awsome but your dreaming man...

Finally.....Da Grim makes a list. Say what you want about him. Questionable Ground Game etc... No one has made him show if he has more than standup skills.
Wish List- Carwin vs Cain

Until Fedor actually looses a fight(since his record should actually be 29-0 with 1 NC) he should be #1

How can Gonzaga who has CONVINGLY LOST THREE of his last FOUR fights BE Number 10 and HOW Someone as TALENTED and SKILLED as JEFF MONSON who has just subbed KHARITONOV in FOUR MINUTES and won THREE MATCHES in THREE MONTHS NOT Make YOUR LIST AT ALL ?

EPIC FAIL !

BTW Barnett is Superior to Mir and would sub him on the ground after pounding him on the feet

Oh and LESNAR via GNP Murder July 11

FEDOR vs LESNAR IS The super fight ANYONE on earth wants to see between the TWO VERY BEST of the WORLD

I would put Carwin in Randy's spot, Randy in Cain's, and Cain where Carwin is.

This past weekend, Cain stole Sherk's old playbook and showed that he can hold a guy down and punch him for 14 minutes... somehow without causing much damage. He also showed that he can't take a good hit as Kongo rocked him each time they traded.

I've mentioned elsewhere that Cain would have a great run if there were a 225 lb class, but since there isn't, I don't see him reaching the top. Lesnar and Carwin have comparable skills, but with a significant strength/ weight advantage, while Mir and Nog can each take a hit and be scary on the ground. It's a shame he didn't fight Herring, since I feel that that would have been a much better fight- and I hope that the two of them meet up in the future.

As for the comments:

If you feel that Fedor is too high and shouldn't be #1... I, and pretty much everyone else, will be happy to move him down the list - as soon as he actually loses.

Call Sylvia and Arlovski what you will, but Sylvia's last fight previous to Fedor was for the UFC belt and Andrei was on a 5 fight win streak and ranked top 5 by most when they fought... and both were previous reigning UFC HW champs.

Of course, that shouldn't matter since the UFC HW division wasn't at it's strongest when either of them were champion... except that all the best HW fighters in the world at that time were over in Japan, fighting in PRIDE, losing to Fedor.

There may be a case for putting the winner of Brock vs. Frank 2 in the number 1 spot, but as it is right now, neither of them have anything close to the record that Fedor does.

Andrei is fine where he is- for now... although it's fairly safe to say that he'll never make it to the top again. His heart and skill are there, but nothing can be done about his chin. Shame, as I've always liked the guy... and wouldn't call his last two "utter embarrassments." There's no shame in losing to Fedor - especially when he was winning the fight until he made a stupid mistake.

I'd complain about Werdum being 15, as he doesn't seem to belong there - but can't decide if it should go to Monson, Herring, or Dos Santos.

BTW, Lesnar >>> Mir, if you're going to go all out and capitalize for emphasis, you should learn to count first. Gonzaga has lost 3 of his last 5, not 4.

unless the ref in mir vs brock 2 is also behind on his bill then mir is SOL. however we might actually see another stoppage in action for a hit in back of the head when the bitch is flat on his back.

Figured I would put this out there. I think that this should be included into each list so that each reader knows who voted for who and what order.

1. Fedor Emelianenko
2. Frank Mir
3. Josh Barnett
4. Brock Lesnar
5. "Minotauro" Nogueira
6. Alistair Overeem
7. Randy Couture
8. Shane Carwin
9. Cain Velasquez
10. Junior dos Santos
11. Cheick Kongo
12. Jeff Monson
13. Mirko Filipovic
14. Gabe Gonzaga
15. Brett Rogers

This is how I voted.

How is Cain over Dos Antos? I smell a strong wrestling bias (either that or Dos Antos gets no respect because he doesn't speak english)

Dos Antos is so underrated by these rankings. Carwin BARELY beats Gonzaga and everyone is on his nutts, while Dos Antos crushes Werdum and barely gets mentioned.

Junior dos Santos

Notice the lowercase 'd' in 'dos' and the 'S' in 'Santos'
