411's MMA Rankings 08.18.09: Light Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 08.18.2009

Welcome to the latest light heavyweight rankings courtesy of 411mania's MMA zone. It seems like forever since we last saw these names and a lot has changed. A semi-major promotion is dead, a former champion has returned to the UFC and a reigning champion has decided to demolish fighters in a different weight class.

The death of Affliction has resulted in few major happenings related to this list. We were able to see the American MMA debut of Gegard Mousasi after all and what a debut it was. He earned his 29th career victory by defeating Babalu Sobral in seconds with a brutal knockout. Mousasi is now the new Strikeforce light heavyweight champion and will try to earn the DREAM Super Hulk tournament trophy later in the year. The dude certainly is on a rocket ship of success, how far can he go?

Tito Ortiz and Dana White kissed and made up and The Huntington Beach Bad Boy is on his way back to the octagon. While an official date is unknown, he will be fighting UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman later this year.

Reigning UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was given a test to try and have an exciting fight. He did exactly that when he made Forrest Griffin look like a modern day TUF-fighter. Now Silva is talking about wanting to stay as a light heavyweight while it looks like he will continue bouncing between divisions. Just do not expect to see a Silva/Lyoto Machida fight anytime soon.

Plus, we are less than a month away from the debut of the 10th season of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV which will feature Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans as opposing coaches. They will fight in December in Memphis, Tennessee and their rivalry should be a treat to watch.

FEEDBACK to Last Week's Lightweight Rankings

From Wyatt Beougher
By the next time these rankings are done, Josh Thomson will have been inactive for over a year with nothing scheduled, thus making him ineligible. Also, Gray Maynard should have handled Huerta and should be in discussions to fight either Diego or KenFlo for a shot at BJ.
Well, the lightweight rankings likely will not be compiled again until the end of September. By then, who knows what Thomson's status will be. It's pretty well understood that once he is medically cleared to fight, he will unify the Strikeforce 155-pound belts with Gilbert Melendez. Maynard will fight Huerta next month, so I assume you mean he 'should' handle him. With a win, Maynard should definitely rise into title contention.

From Pwnage
What an outrageous mode of thinking. A ranking where a talented fighter (Florian) doesn't drop below worse fighters (everyone else) just because he loses. That is almost...ingenious.

I'll be thoroughly looking forward to the Sherdog rankings which will inevitably place Brian 'Matt Serra' Bowles as the #1 BW and Kenny Florian behind the Junior Dos Lightweights of the world.
I'm not sure how well sarcasm translates on the internet but I applaud you sir for making it simple.

From wylun
the reason why i said i cant wait for fedor to fall on the rankings because face it.. his quality of opponents except for Overeem, how many people can he fight in strikeforce that will give him a legit spot at the top anymore? he might be known as the top HW,.. but that means nothing if u dont fight other top HW...
That is assuming possible opponents such as Werdum, Rogers and whomever else are slugs. That's debatable although Rogers is unproven against elite competition (biggest name he has fought was Arlovski and that version of The Pitbull is nothing to speak of anyway). There is something to your argument about Fedor not fighting top competition. If he hasn't already, he may fall from the mantle that is top heavyweight in place of Brock Lesnar.

From Jeremy S
As for this list, I liked it. I would probably have knocked KenFlo down more after his sad performance against Penn. And I think Sanchez should be a bit higher.
I'd agree about Sanchez. I think he's one of the top 155ers in the world, yet he does not get as much love from other 411 staffers.

From "USA, USA!!!" romano
lw rankings always suck due to the overrated quality of japan lws...f this stuff.
Maybe the fighters in America are overrated...ever ponder that?

From buddha
i wouldn't say gray maynard deserves to be on this list yet. if he can pull off the upset over huerta then i'd put him around #10. definitely ahead of sean sherk, who hasn't had a good performance since he stopped roids. and i'm so glad you left clay guida off this list, he is one of the most overrated fighters under a ufc contract.

so cavalcante loses to aoki, doesn't fight again for over a year, loses again and he's tied for 11th? in my opinion, i'd have jamie varner and gomi a lil higher on this list
The WEC guys don't get a lot of pub around here for whatever reason. However, I would point to Cerrone as being more of a top 15 caliber guy than Varner (that's arguable, I know). With JZ, I think it's more about his past success and potential as you are correct about recent performances.

From jay
if brock was 50lbs.lighter he would train differently he is going to use and prepare for a fight with what his strengths are...why punish a man for using his god given physical size...oh he's so big...these guys train in different ways...if he were in wwe would u expect him to jump off the ropes...he is big and strong and uses it for his advantage
Nobody is punishing Brock for his natural gifts but he is just not a PFP top fighter in my book. The comparison to WWE is not a decent one, by the way. :) Brock uses his strength to manhandle opponents, he is not going to grapple his way to victory like GSP may or submit someone like Penn. He is taking people down and pounding them out or knocking them out. If you take Lesnar and let's say Tyson Griffin, hypothetically say they are of equal size, does Brock have a big advantage over Griffin? I don't think so. So does that make Griffin a top PFP guy?

Thanks for all the great comments, feedback and everything in between.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- A fighter must fight at least once within the past calendar year to be ranked. The rule applies to weight classes as well so fighters must stay active inside their native weight class. However, if a fighter has a fight scheduled, they are eligible to be ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and write in a language that has the ability to be read by most, if not all. That would be most helpful. Thank you.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the staff of 411mania. Therefore, if you don't like where a fighter is ranked, don't hate the playa, hate the game.

How is Anderson Silva not ranked #2?

Posted By: King Durin (Guest)  on August 17, 2009 at 11:25 PM

IMO silva is to high up, he beat a overrated Griffin. and Babalu should be higher. Evans is to high. Imma be #1 come Nov. 4th.

Posted By: Shogun (Guest)  on August 17, 2009 at 11:44 PM

Jardine has lost 3 out of his last 5....
Forrest Griffin has lost his last two....
Should have been Mousasi at #6, Luiz Cane at #7, Franklin and Lil Nog move up 2 spots, Griffin at #10 and Jardine at #11.

i love seeing jon jones on this list. with his skill set, age, and body frame he has potential to be a serious player at 205. and i'm glad you didn't throw anderson silva at the top already. he was impressive, but is perfect at a #4 ranking, for now.

i think rich franklin is a little high on the list for losing his only fight at 205. and it makes no sense to see jardine ranked ahead of mousasi, even before this past weekend, gegard is a top 5 205er. i think nogueira also deserves to be in the top 10.

How the hell does Sardine Jardean make list like this? Evans stays to high and people bitch about Forrest.

Posted By: Daniel (Guest)  on August 18, 2009 at 02:17 AM

**correction- just realized in my last post i said franklin hasn't won a fight at 205, but i realized the hamill fight was his return to 205. i still think he's ranked to high till he beats someone

I think Mousasi should be top 3 and I don't understand how Rashad Evans can be above Silva? Would anyone give him a chance in hell against the spider?

Posted By: Diavo (Guest)  on August 18, 2009 at 07:41 AM

no WAY does Anderson belong at #4. WAY too high on the list! You have him AHEAD of the #1 Contender (Shogun)? LUDICROUS I tell you!
IF Silva is going to keep fighting at 205, it's time to let him face the better fighters of the weight class:
Fights against:
Rampage
Rashad
Thiago Silva
etc.

But Anderson only has 4 fights left in his contract:
Next against Dan Henderson
SO that leaves 3. I know Dana and the Fertitas will have to give us Anderson vs GSP because that fight will just be a license to print HUGE amounts of money! (And it doesn't matter if it is held at a catchweight of 175 OR for the MW Title at 185)

So that leaves just 2 fights for Anderson. I could see him facing the loser of Rampage/Rashad. Which leaves him just 1 more fight.

That Jon Jones photo sure doesn't do anything to quiet any talk of MMA's not so subtle homo-eroticism.

move mousasi over jardine, franklin over cane and silva over rashad and you got yourselves a perfect list.

Jardine has lost 3 of his last 5. Mousasi just straight annihalated Babalu who i believe would defeat Jardine. I know its just one win but that one win is enough to put gegard over jardine and even debate gegard over shogun (key word debate)

Cane is a solid fighter but has beaten nobody. Granted Franklin has been and is scheduled to fight catchweight bouts but i just can't find evidence to justify ranking him behind Cane.

I don't think i even need to explain my pick of moving silva over rashad. Rashad handled griffin but it was a close fight until he got dominant ground position. silva made griffin look (and act) like a little schoolboy fighting his father.

These guys have a rub for Jardine I dont get it how they continue to rank this spaz so high every month. But if you look at their august 2008 rankings they have Chuck still at 3. They are clearly morons

Posted By: pikey (Guest)  on August 18, 2009 at 09:43 AM

Last week someone made a great comment about how it was refreshing to see a top fightwer lose to another top fightwer yet not plummet in the rankings (Florian).

This week the first couple of comments kill these rankings for keeping fighters like Jardine and Forrest ranked with recent losses - then promote fighters like Babalu who's biggest wins recently have been against guys who couldn't cut it at the bottom of the UFC Light Hvy division (let alone the top). It wasn't that long ago Chuck smashed Babalu for a 2nd time. The same Chuck who can no longer hang with the UFC elite.

To use college football as an example - when USC crushes Washington St., that does not make them better than the Patriots - or even on the same level. In the Light Hvy division especially all of the top guys are in the UFC. That's probably why Tito came back - and why Belfort came back, etc.... There are no appealing 185-205 lb. fights outside of the UFC. Hence Jake Shields calling out Frank Shamrock.

The once exception to this rule is Mousasi. He is an animal. Would love to see him accept the call to the major leagues.

All in all this is my long winded way of saying these ranking got it right.

If Cantwell is receiving votes, Bader should be as well. In a year, Bader will be one of the big things in the LHW division along with Jones.

IMO, I think Silva is ranked a bit too high. I realize he had a great win over Griffon, but I'd like to see a bit more out of him in the division before we get carried away.

Griffon is ranked a bit high after that loss, bt I just don't know what to think of him right now. He is one of my favorite fighters though; but I just don't know. You can give him a break because he lost to one of the best P4P's, but look at how he lost too.

I thought Mousasi should have been ahead of Jardine and Babalu should be lower...he seems to lose most times he fights a quality opponent.

I guess nothing that horrible on the list; I just think these things jump around so much sometimes b/c you guys look at current hype and records, when you should also be looking at not only how many wins/losses they have, but who they beat, who they lost to and how.

nice to see little nog in 11th place
