411 MMA Rankings 08.25.09: Welterweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 08.25.2009

Welcome to a jam packed edition of the weekly 411mania MMA Rankings as we highlight the welterweights yet again. It's been over a month since Georges St. Pierre took care of Thiago Alves at UFC 100, but he remains the undisputed and unanimous best 170-pounder on the planet. But I'm not telling you anything you did not already know. The first question becomes what goes on after GSP in the top spot. Is Jon Fitch the second-best or is non-UFC fighter Jake Shields simply that dominant on the ground that his greatness over everyone not named Georges cannot be denied?

Besides Shields, the rest of the top ten is mostly littered with Zuffa fighters. The first real wave of fighters from other promotions comes with new DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis and Strikeforce weed boy Nick Diaz. I don't know the man but I'd venture to say Zaromskis won't miss a championship fight because he could not prevent himself from the ganja. Maybe that's just me?

The next MMA card to feature top welterweights will be next month's UFC Fight Night 19 on September 16th on Spike TV. I'm not sure whether either fight will appear on the live broadcast however, so the best bet is to check out UFC.com for videos of the fights some time thereafter. Carlos Condit will fight Jake Ellenberger. Ellenberger will replace the injured Chris Lytle who will be out of action for several months with a knee injury. Also on the card will be Brock Larson (forget Rich Clementi, this guy gets NO LOVE) as he fights Mike Pierce.

Below is feedback to last week's light heavyweight rankings and afterwards, enjoy the updated welterweight rankings.

To the feedback...

From King Durin:
How is Anderson Silva not ranked #2?
Silva has fought twice at 205, give us a break. :) Why should Silva immediately be ahead of the elites of the division?

From Brad:
Jardine has lost 3 out of his last 5....
Forrest Griffin has lost his last two....
Should have been Mousasi at #6, Luiz Cane at #7, Franklin and Lil Nog move up 2 spots, Griffin at #10 and Jardine at #11.
You would punish Griffin about six spots (going off memory, I think Griffin was #4 before his loss) for losing to Silva? That seems a bit too reactionary to me. He is still a recent former champion who beat the #2 ranked fighter. As for Jardine, he is a bone of contention among some of the staff. I'll just say your sentiment is not foreign to me at this point.

From buddha:
i love seeing jon jones on this list. with his skill set, age, and body frame he has potential to be a serious player at 205. and i'm glad you didn't throw anderson silva at the top already. he was impressive, but is perfect at a #4 ranking, for now.

i think rich franklin is a little high on the list for losing his only fight at 205. and it makes no sense to see jardine ranked ahead of mousasi, even before this past weekend, gegard is a top 5 205er. i think nogueira also deserves to be in the top 10.
**correction- just realized in my last post i said franklin hasn't won a fight at 205, but i realized the hamill fight was his return to 205. i still think he's ranked to high till he beats someone
You'd be surprised that while the 205 division is the top one in the UFC, there are not a slew of guys besides the top of the list who get some love. It's not like the lightweights where 20 or more different fighters get named. With the 205ers, it's usually much closer to 15 and Bones Jones is definitely making an impact as far as we are concerned. He's so entertaining to watch, that never hurts. As for Lil Nog, I think once (if) he makes his way to the UFC and gets more recognition (and as long as he wins), he should be seen as a more elite 205er.

From Daniel:
How the hell does Sardine Jardean make list like this? Evans stays to high and people bitch about Forrest.
So Jardine is the dude getting all the heat this week? I'll admit, I personally had Jardine at the end of the top 10 but enough people still see him as the guy who defeated Liddell (before he was done), Griffin and had a legit shot at taking Rampage down earlier this year. Why should Rashad Evans fall more when he lost to the #1 fighter?

From Diavo:
I think Mousasi should be top 3 and I don't understand how Rashad Evans can be above Silva? Would anyone give him a chance in hell against the spider?
Where was all this Gegard Mousasi love prior to his thrashing of Babalu last week? :) Hell, some may think Anderson Silva could defeat any man on this list, does that mean he should be #1?

From A. Coolman:
That Jon Jones photo sure doesn't do anything to quiet any talk of MMA's not so subtle homo-eroticism.
And that talk comes from whom/where exactly, Mr. Coolman?

From stronelis:
move mousasi over jardine, franklin over cane and silva over rashad and you got yourselves a perfect list.

Jardine has lost 3 of his last 5. Mousasi just straight annihalated Babalu who i believe would defeat Jardine. I know its just one win but that one win is enough to put gegard over jardine and even debate gegard over shogun (key word debate)

Cane is a solid fighter but has beaten nobody. Granted Franklin has been and is scheduled to fight catchweight bouts but i just can't find evidence to justify ranking him behind Cane.

I don't think i even need to explain my pick of moving silva over rashad. Rashad handled griffin but it was a close fight until he got dominant ground position. silva made griffin look (and act) like a little schoolboy fighting his father.
You're arguing degrees of dominance when talking Evans/Silva. Both men beat Griffin pretty handily and it's all hearsay because they are not fighting each other anytime soon, if ever. As for Cane/Franklin, voting was close so it was not a case where either man was seen as worlds better than the other. I would probably take Franklin if they were ever to step into the octagon against one another.

From pikey:
These guys have a rub for Jardine I dont get it how they continue to rank this spaz so high every month. But if you look at their august 2008 rankings they have Chuck still at 3. They are clearly morons
LMAO! Perhaps Mr. Tool is a third cousin of Jardine's? Obviously we are a school of morons, and the 411 schoolmaster keeps letting us go free once or more a week. Write the bosses~!

From MJH:
Last week someone made a great comment about how it was refreshing to see a top fighter lose to another top fighter yet not plummet in the rankings (Florian).

This week the first couple of comments kill these rankings for keeping fighters like Jardine and Forrest ranked with recent losses - then promote fighters like Babalu who's biggest wins recently have been against guys who couldn't cut it at the bottom of the UFC Light Hvy division (let alone the top). It wasn't that long ago Chuck smashed Babalu for a 2nd time. The same Chuck who can no longer hang with the UFC elite.

To use college football as an example - when USC crushes Washington St., that does not make them better than the Patriots - or even on the same level. In the Light Hvy division especially all of the top guys are in the UFC. That's probably why Tito came back - and why Belfort came back, etc.... There are no appealing 185-205 lb. fights outside of the UFC. Hence Jake Shields calling out Frank Shamrock.

The once exception to this rule is Mousasi. He is an animal. Would love to see him accept the call to the major leagues.

All in all this is my long winded way of saying these ranking got it right.
Why thank you. At least one person feels we are not in fact, morons.

From THE Jeremy S:
IMO, I think Silva is ranked a bit too high. I realize he had a great win over Griffon, but I'd like to see a bit more out of him in the division before we get carried away.

Griffon is ranked a bit high after that loss, bt I just don't know what to think of him right now. He is one of my favorite fighters though; but I just don't know. You can give him a break because he lost to one of the best P4P's, but look at how he lost too.

I thought Mousasi should have been ahead of Jardine and Babalu should be lower...he seems to lose most times he fights a quality opponent.

I guess nothing that horrible on the list; I just think these things jump around so much sometimes b/c you guys look at current hype and records, when you should also be looking at not only how many wins/losses they have, but who they beat, who they lost to and how.
Regarding Silva, that line of thinking was echoed by some in the staff meeting. Can't you just say Griffin had a bad, bad night? He is not as bad as that and he is not as good as he looks when he wins. He is a great fighter but he is susceptible to being caught.

From Mr. or Ms. GET OUT THE WAAAAY:
Krzysztof Soszynski should be considered next time if he gets by Vera this month.
If he wins in explosive fashion, I can guarantee he will be considered.

From Butters4Prez:
Jardine at 6??? Are you guys on crack??? The guy shouldn't even be in a top 20.
Geez, what did Jardine do to you?

From KSti:
Anderson should be at 2. Forrest should be above Jardine. Mousasi should be at 11. Though I'm not surprised people are going to jump on the Mousasi bandwagon.
Why should Forrest be above Jardine? In perhaps the most simplistic way of seeing which fighter is better, Jardine defeated Griffin.

Thanks as always for the questions and comments.

THE CREW

The 411 MMA staff has decided to pull back the curtain for this trial run. After some consideration, this week marks the first time in the soon-to-be two-year history of 411 MMA Rankings that you will be able to see which knucklehead put which fighter where. 411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and include your own set of rankings if you would!

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we can spread out and run away so you wouldn't even be able to catch us all anyhow.

2) Jon Fitch (19-3)

Height: 6'0

Birthday: February 24, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Paulo Thiago - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 100 - July 11, 2009

- vs. Akihiro Gono - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn II - January 31, 2009

- vs. Diego Sanchez - Win via decision (split) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Ricardo Almeida - UFC 106 - November 21, 2009

Comment: Fitch is slated to fight Almeida in his welterweight debut later this year. Almeida is a BJJ wonder so Fitch may not have an easy time wrestling him on the ground. Then again, I guess you could have said the same thing about his fight with Paulo Thiago. Fitch is in this awkward phase where he had a recent shot at the champion and loss, but is still winning fights. It does appear that he will receive a rematch with GSP in the near future (but really, who the hell knows), but the man continues to win the fights he's booked in.

3) Jake Shields (23-4-1)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: January 9, 1979

Currently Fighting With: Strikeforce

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Robbie Lawler - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - Strikeforce on Showtime - June 6, 2009

- vs. Paul Daley - Win via submission (armbar) - EliteXC "Heat" - October 4, 2008

- vs. Nick Thompson - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - EliteXC: Unfinished Business - July 26, 2008

- vs. Mike Pyle - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - EliteXC: Renegade - November 10, 2007

- vs. Renato Verissimo - Win via TKO (strikes) - EliteXC: Uprising - September 15, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Mayhem Miller - Strikeforce - Fall 2009

Comment: While Shields does not have a fight on the books just yet, you can look for him on the upcoming second season of MTV's Bully Beatdown. Jake will make some poor schmuck tap faster then it takes Larry Csonka to crack the whip in the locker room.

4) Thiago Alves (16-4)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: October 3, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 100 - July 11, 2009

- vs. Josh Koscheck - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote - October 25, 2008

- vs. Matt Hughes - Win via TKO (knee and punches) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008

- vs. Karo Parisyan - Win via TKO (knee and punches) - UFC: Fight Night 13 - April 2, 2008

- vs. Chris Lytle - Win via TKO (doctor stoppage due to cut) - UFC 78: Validation - November 17, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- Currently Unknown

Comment: Reports say the UFC is in the process of booking a fight between Alves and Paulo Thiago for one of the final 2009 shows. Considering that each man is coming off a tough loss, the winner may propel himself (back) into title contention as far as the top welterweights are concerned.

5) Josh Koscheck (12-4)

Height: 5'10

Birthday: November 30, 1977

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Paulo Thiago - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 95: Sanchez vs. Stevenson - February 21, 2009

- vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida - Win via KO (punch) - UFC: Fight For The Troops - December 10, 2008

- vs. Thiago Alves - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote - October 25, 2008

- vs. Chris Lytle - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin - July 5, 2008

- vs. Dustin Hazelett - Win via TKO (kick and punches) - UFC 82: Pride Of A Champion - March 1, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Frank Trigg - UFC 103 - September 19, 2009

Comment: After fighting four times in 2008, the fact we have only seen the blonde bomber once this year feels a bit off. He is healthy again and poses a huge obstacle for the returning Frank Trigg next month. I would surmise a loss for Koscheck here would knock him down quite a ways when we rank them again. Could Trigg do the unimaginable, defeat Koscheck and return to being a ranked fighter in our eyes?

6) Martin Kampmann (15-2)

Height: 6'0

Birthday: April 17, 1982

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Carlos Condit - Win via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann - April 1, 2009

- vs. Nate Marquardt - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 88: Breakthrough - September 6, 2008

- vs. Jorge Rivera - Win via submission (guillotine) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008

- vs. Andrew McFedries - Win via submission (arm triangle choke) - UFC 68: Uprising - March 3, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Mike Swick - UFC 103 - September 19, 2009

7) Mike Swick (14-2)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: June 19, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ben Saunders - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 99: The Comeback - June 13, 2009

- vs. Yushin Okami - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 69: Shootout - April 7, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Martin Kampmann - UFC 103 - September 19, 2009

8) Matt Hughes (43-7)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: October 13, 1973

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Matt Serra - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida - May 23, 2009

- vs. Thiago Alves - Loss via TKO (knee and punches) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - Loss via verbal submission (arm bar) - UFC 79: Nemesis - December 29, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Jake Ellenberger - UFC Fiight Night 19 - September 16, 2009

Comment: Well now that Diaz will be trying his hand at a professional boxing career, who knows when exactly we will see him return to the cage. Assuming they drug test for boxing fights, when does he plan to fight?

11) Marius Zaromskis (11-2)

Height: 5'9

Currently Fighting With: DREAM

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jason High - Win via KO (head kick) - DREAM 10: Welterweight Grand Prix 2009 Final Round - July 20, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

Comment: Zaromskis makes his first appearance on the list after shocking the world and becoming the first DREAM welterweight champion. Can he build on his Grand Prix victory? We shall see, hopefully sooner than later.

Next scheduled appearance:

- Currently Unknown

Comment: You know he has to be pissed off after the turn of events before his fight with Taylor. Signed with Strikeforce because they guaranteed him a title shot, it was taken away and now he's left in the wind. I hope the EA Sports MMA game delivers mucho dinero for the fighters who signed on.

14) Yoshiyuki Yoshida (10-3)

These rankings are damn good, guys. My only thought is that I beleive Brock Larsen should be 2-3 spots higher. But...I cant really fault his spot TOO muhcv so I will give praise and await the heavyweight rankigns that are apparently going to make people angry.

THE Jeremy S. That's what I'm talking about!!

hmmm, Not much to say about this list. Damnit I can't work under this kind of pressure!!

Although I probably wouldn't have put Hughes in the top 10 anymore, much as I like the guy.

You know, sometimes for guys like GSP and (Anderson) Silva, they should get like both #1 & 2 rankings just to show how far ahead of the pack they are. lol

Perfect.

Paulo Thiago is the unluckiest guy in MMA....

From A. Coolman:
That Jon Jones photo sure doesn't do anything to quiet any talk of MMA's not so subtle homo-eroticism.
And that talk comes from whom/where exactly, Mr. Coolman?

The talk comes from people who are not into the sport.....and wiseass people that I know. Not the wise, educated and very mature folks who populate and regularly view this great site, of course. Like you have never heard a "two half-naked men laying all over each other" joke from some douchebag.

Not sure why Hughes is still so high and Larson is soooooooo low. Hardy at 12?? W....T....F?! I don't see Hardy even beating your "other fighters receiving votes." Well, except for Marcus, of course

Great rankings guys!

My only grip is that I think Jonathan Solomon has a hard on for Kos and he skewed the rakings a bit. Kos cannot be above Alves - sorry but had to call you out.....

pretty solid. surprised that only two people got the Nick Diaz ranking right. He definitely does not belong in the top-10.

Poor Matt Serra.

Great rankings - love seeing everyone's individual list.

1. F Diaz. He is a cancer - unreliable and a known cheater. He doesn't deserved to be ranked.

2. What is the status on Jake Shield's contract? I would love to see him fight the top guys. Seeing him call out Frank Shamrock just makes me sad.

3. Great to see Brock Larson on the list. 26-2 is pretty sweet.

Alves is a little low no? He has beaten Hughes and Kos and only lost to the best WW, if not the best MMA fighter in the world. A little harsh, Shields competition isn't of the highest standard, plus his last fight wasn't even at WW. He is moving to MW full-time soon anyway, so he can be ranked.

Kampann should be higher than Kos, if were taking fights at a different weight class.

Suprised to see no Johnson, other wise good rankings.
