411 MMA Rankings 09.01.09: Middleweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 09.01.2009
The 411 MMA zone ranks the middleweights of the world because after all, there are so many guys besides Anderson Silva. After UFC 102 can Nate Marquardt push Dan Henderson out of the passenger seat? See where Bully Beatdown's Jason Miller places and which new stud ranks for the first time as a middleweight. All that and much more in this jam packed edition of MMA Rankings.
Welcome back as this week brings us the 185ers that make up the middleweight division. For a while this division was known simply by that of its top fighter, Anderson Silva. However, these days the talent is not as lacking. In the UFC alone, there are two viable contenders to Silva's crown in Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt. Each are coming off wins by devastating knockouts at UFC 100 and 102, respectively. Vitor Belfort is back where he became famous and Yoshihiro Akiyama figures to be as much a force as anyone else.
Outside of the UFC, Jacare Souza and Mayhem Miller are fresh signers with Strikeforce. As a matter of fact, top welterweight Jake Shields is sticking around at middleweight after submitting Robbie Lawler and will fight Miller to determine the interim middleweight champion while Cung Le remains inactive. Speaking of Lawler, once ranked as a top-four fighter, his future may not be so bright as once thought. His weakness is apparently expert grapplers so a fight with Souza may be declined if indeed it is offered. Jorge Santiago remains the Sengoku middleweight champion but news on his immediate fight future has been next to nonexistent.
One fighter on the list remains a free agent after the demise of Affliction and that is Matt Lindland, who won't be fighting inside the UFC for a long time, if ever again. He last fought in January and was knocked out by Belfort. While he failed to make the top-15 for the first time ever, Thales Leites did receive some votes. He is the second free-agent total having recently been cut by the UFC. Talk about going from top to bottom, not too long ago he challenged Anderson Silva for his championship and one fight later, he's cut by the UFC.
Let's get on with the show as we rank the best middleweights in the world.
FEEDBACK to Last Week's Welterweight Rankings
From AdamS:
These rankings are damn good, guys. My only thought is that I beleive Brock Larsen should be 2-3 spots higher. But...I cant really fault his spot TOO much so I will give praise and await the heavyweight rankigns that are apparently going to make people angry. Thanks. Based on record, Larson should probably be higher than 15 but people look at his record and they don't see that huge name he's beaten.
From JEREMY s:
Not much to say about this list. Damnit I can't work under this kind of pressure!!
Although I probably wouldn't have put Hughes in the top 10 anymore, much as I like the guy.
You know, sometimes for guys like GSP and (Anderson) Silva, they should get like both #1 & 2 rankings just to show how far ahead of the pack they are. lol You're under pressure?, awww.... :) Much as some may say Hughes is too old to compete at the top of the division, his only defeats (recently) are against GSP and Alves. Nothing to be embarrassed about. However, I would like to see him more active but it's coming to that point in his career where days of fighting three or four times in a year are done. And yes, I'd say both GSP and Silva are far ahead of their top competition. When they fight, it looks like they are never in danger and it's just a countdown until they finish the fight.
From Brad:
Perfect.
Paulo Thiago is the unluckiest guy in MMA.... Well I don't know about that, a lot of people wanted to find out more about Thiago when he fought Fitch. It was not an impressive performance and questions still remain so most don't consider him among the best in the division. Him coming in dead last this month, well yeah, I guess that is a bit unlucky.
From A. Coolman:
The talk comes from people who are not into the sport.....and wiseass people that I know. Not the wise, educated and very mature folks who populate and regularly view this great site, of course. Like you have never heard a "two half-naked men laying all over each other" joke from some douchebag. Obviously, those uneducated about the sport will say stupid stuff. You have that with everything. People who are not fans of MLB, NFL, or NBA may criticize those sports for silly factors.
From GeeSpotter:
Not sure why Hughes is still so high and Larson is soooooooo low. Hardy at 12?? W....T....F?! I don't see Hardy even beating your "other fighters receiving votes." Well, except for Marcus, of course It's not like Hughes is a top-five guy, he rounds out the top-ten. Would you say Nick Diaz is better than Hughes, I wouldn't. As for Hardy, what's your beef with him?
From Brian:
Great rankings guys!
My only gripe is that I think Jonathan Solomon has a hard on for Kos and he skewed the rakings a bit. Kos cannot be above Alves - sorry but had to call you out..... Thanks. I can safely say my hard ons have nothing to do with Koscheck. As for the rankings, perhaps I did drop Alves a bit too low considering he was not finished by GSP. I'll admit I possibly did that. I am higher on Koscheck then some of my colleagues here but when I look at him, I see a great wrestler with great striking. He's only lost to GSP and Alves, so I think he belongs amongst the top of the division. As for skewing the overall rankings, Alves did not come close to overtaking Shields' 3rd spot at all this month. Spots five and six, then six and seven were closer (within a five-point difference) but it would have taken more than my vote to really shake things up.
From dale:
pretty solid. surprised that only two people got the Nick Diaz ranking right. He definitely does not belong in the top-10. We'll agree to disagree I guess. I see Diaz as a top-10 guy at 170 easily. Only one of the voters had Diaz substantially low (14) but I chalk that up to Diaz's recent drug mess. Taking the recent fiasco out of the equation, how is Diaz not a viable top-ten guy?
From MJH:
Great rankings - love seeing everyone's individual list.
1. F Diaz. He is a cancer - unreliable and a known cheater. He doesn't deserved to be ranked.
2. What is the status on Jake Shield's contract? I would love to see him fight the top guys. Seeing him call out Frank Shamrock just makes me sad.
3. Great to see Brock Larson on the list. 26-2 is pretty sweet. Thanks. As for Diaz, thankfully 411 does not have to book him to show up and pass a drug test. All we do is rank the man amongst his peers. And he is one damn good fighter. Jake Shields is signed with Strikeforce and I assume is not close to becoming a free-agent. I'm not sure on how many more fights he has on his current deal.
From James R:
Alves is a little low no? He has beaten Hughes and Kos and only lost to the best WW, if not the best MMA fighter in the world. A little harsh, Shields competition isn't of the highest standard, plus his last fight wasn't even at WW. He is moving to MW full-time soon anyway, so he can be ranked.
Kampann should be higher than Kos, if were taking fights at a different weight class.
Suprised to see no Johnson, other wise good rankings. Once Shields' future plans become a bit more concrete, his status in the 170 rankings will be decided by the staff. As for Alves, he dropped from #2 to #4 in the aftermath of UFC 100. Last year, after losing to GSP, Jon Fitch did not drop at all and remained at #2. So the staff did see Alves as not maintaining the same ferocity over competition, if that makes sense. Alves is still a bad MFer but should he have remained in the 2-spot? Jon Fitch appears to be back on the successful road and Jake Shields is simply beating whomever they put in front of him. I could see an argument for Alves at 3 but still at the 4-spot, he remains a big threat in the division. He just takes a step to the back of the line, I assume.
Thanks for the comments, questions, and love/hate. It's always appreciated

411's MMA Ranking Rules
- A fighter must fight at least once within the past calendar year to be ranked. The rule applies to weight classes as well so fighters must stay active inside their native weight class. However, if a fighter has a fight scheduled, they are eligible to be ranked.
- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and include your own set of rankings if you would!
- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the staff of 411mania. If you wish to duel over any ranking, contact me and we can work something out. I may be busy but I am almost positive 411's resident Tool is available for such occasions. If not, a comment below can serve you just as well.

Comment: Shields makes his first appearance in our middleweight rankings. The man will be fighting Mayhem for the interim-Strikeforce 185-championship soon and it appears his intentions are to stick here for the time being. This probably means we may scratch him from the 170-rankings in the future.

Closing Comments: Others receiving votes include Thales Leites, Denis Kang, Frank Trigg, Paulo Filho, Joey Villasenor, Alessio Sakara and Chael Sonnen.
Trigg's first fight on his new UFC deal is at welterweight versus Josh Koscheck. After that fight and once his future becomes clearer, a decision will be made to either move him to welterweight or keep him amongst our middleweight rankings.
For the time being, Jake Shields will be ranked as both a welterweight and middleweight.
Both Jorge Santiago and Matt Lindland have less than five months to either fight or be booked for a fight or risk becoming ineligible to be ranked. Five months is a long time, just updating.

@1
I think its about how filho lost more than anything else.
Posted By: NewGuinea (Guest) on September 01, 2009 at 01:24 AM
Can't complain much about the list... though I wasn't sure what to make of Maia after his loss. I hate it when someone that seems really good loses so badly in a quick shot like that. Makes me wonder if he is deserving of still being ranked as high as he is or if he was just unlucky and we should wait and see how his next fight goes. Though I probably would put Vitor ahead of him at this point at least.

Bill W and Scott K's rankings should not be counted into the overall rankings cuz they wasted a spot when they voted for Thales Leites.
Not a bad list otherwise. Any rumors going around about the next time Jorge Santiago might fight? January was a looooong time ago

Your rankings as always are excellent! The breakdowns by the "crew" is a great idea.
Love it how Paulo Filho is gone - for his own sake I hope he gets it back together.
Yushin Okami - I hate to see him at #4 as I find him so boring but I suppose he is somewhere up there.
I had no idea Jake Shields was moving to MW. Why is he doing this? Did he clean out WW? I cannot wait to see him go against Jason Miller!
Hope to see Michael Bisping off the list next time with another loss.... he may well be my least favorite UFC fighter.
Hope to see Nathan Marquardt and Dan Henderson fight next - let Anderson get one more good LW fight and then put the winner of Nate/Dan agaist him.
This website keeps getting better and better - my favorite MMA site by far.

The main reason I think Nick Diaz isn't a top-10 fighter at WW is because WW has GSP, Alves, Koscheck, Fitch, Shields (sort of), Kampmann, Swick, Condit, Hardy, Johnson, even Hughes, Hieron and Mach (maybe)... who should all be ranked above him.
Plus, I don't think he's even a welterweight fighter anymore, he's accomplished nothing in the weight-class. His only two impressive wins since Koji Oishi tried to face attack him are over Shamrock and Smith. One was at 179. The other was at 180. Neither guy belongs in the top-10 of WW or MW.
There's also the whole test positive or just don't show up to the test at all thing going on.
I still hope he ends up back in the UFC so I can see him fight some real competition.
Middleweight rankings are very good. Hope to see Hendo/Marquardt fight, even though Hendo says he doesn't want to fight anybody but Anderson.
