411 MMA Rankings 09.08.09: Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 09.08.2009

Welcome to another hearty helping of MMA Rankings courtesy of 411Mania. These are the Fedor Emelianenko ratings however, his placement is NOT unanimous. That's right. Doubts and negativity are creeping into the man's aura for the first time. People want to see him fight more actively and once he gets inside the cage in November against Brett Rogers, let's hope that will come to fruition.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira defeated Randy Couture in one of the best fights of the year, killing any doubts he was washed up. Meanwhile, Randy Couture is on a two-fight losing streak and having just signed a brand new long-term contract with the UFC, plan on seeing more of The Natural.

The heavyweight division is not exclusive to the UFC with nearly half of the fighters actively fighting for promotions other than the premiere brand. Although some are free agents, others such as Brett Rogers and Fabricio Werdum are now Strikeforce mainstays. All we can do is wait to see whether Alistair Overeem will recover from his injuries in time to actually defend his Strikeforce heavyweight championship.

Let's get it going, enjoy the rankings and don't forget the HEAVYWEIGHT season of The Ultimate Fighter kicks off next week on Spike. That should be a blast. Who knows, by the end of it, maybe Kimbo Slice will be ranked here for the first time ever.

Here's some feedback to last week's middleweight rankings.

From S Dot: Filho loses ONCE and is dropped?!
Well, many people felt so fed up with Paulo Filho's performance in his rematch against Chael Sonnen that they decided to drop him far down the list or entirely off. I did not and still don't know what to make of that fight and not knowing what Filho's up to, I decided not to rank him until he puts some impressive performances together.

From Jeremy S: Can't complain much about the list... though I wasn't sure what to make of Maia after his loss. I hate it when someone that seems really good loses so badly in a quick shot like that. Makes me wonder if he is deserving of still being ranked as high as he is or if he was just unlucky and we should wait and see how his next fight goes. Though I probably would put Vitor ahead of him at this point at least.
Exactly right about the way in which Maia lost. Everyone can be knocked out so when it happens that quickly, it is not a huge knock against the guys skills. Let's just hope his chin can improve because his future opponents will be gunning for him with a right.

From GeeSpotter: Bill W and Scott K's rankings should not be counted into the overall rankings cuz they wasted a spot when they voted for Thales Leites.

Not a bad list otherwise. Any rumors going around about the next time Jorge Santiago might fight? January was a looooong time ago
I have no idea about Santiago although some places say he may fight on the Brazilian show for Bitetti. I'm not sure about that one.

From Brian: Your rankings as always are excellent! The breakdowns by the "crew" is a great idea.

Love it how Paulo Filho is gone - for his own sake I hope he gets it back together.
Yushin Okami - I hate to see him at #4 as I find him so boring but I suppose he is somewhere up there.

I had no idea Jake Shields was moving to MW. Why is he doing this? Did he clean out WW? I cannot wait to see him go against Jason Miller!

Hope to see Michael Bisping off the list next time with another loss.... he may well be my least favorite UFC fighter.

Hope to see Nathan Marquardt and Dan Henderson fight next - let Anderson get one more good LW fight and then put the winner of Nate/Dan agaist him.

This website keeps getting better and better - my favorite MMA site by far.
Thanks for the kind words. Shields moving out of welterweight is two fold I believe. One, the Strikeforce 170-division was made for Nick Diaz (at least the belt was created for him). Shields and Diaz will not fight each other. Shields has no real big name opponents at welterweight and sees of the potential names out there, he can probably have bigger fights with middleweight fighters.

From dale: The main reason I think Nick Diaz isn't a top-10 fighter at WW is because WW has GSP, Alves, Koscheck, Fitch, Shields (sort of), Kampmann, Swick, Condit, Hardy, Johnson, even Hughes, Hieron and Mach (maybe)... who should all be ranked above him.

Plus, I don't think he's even a welterweight fighter anymore, he's accomplished nothing in the weight-class. His only two impressive wins since Koji Oishi tried to face attack him are over Shamrock and Smith. One was at 179. The other was at 180. Neither guy belongs in the top-10 of WW or MW.

There's also the whole test positive or just don't show up to the test at all thing going on.

I still hope he ends up back in the UFC so I can see him fight some real competition.

Middleweight rankings are very good. Hope to see Hendo/Marquardt fight, even though Hendo says he doesn't want to fight anybody but Anderson.
Diaz is a weird fighter in that he fights at several different weights so it's tough to pin him down to one.

Thanks for another week of talk from the outskirts of 411ville.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we are not dangerous at all, I won't lie to you.

411's Official MMA Rankings

Comment: With Affliction folding, Emelianenko still has one fight left on his deal. He likely won't be interested in a UFC deal that restricts where he can work so expect him to next turn up in Japan. Jeffery Harris didn't have Overeem in his TOP 15?!?! I want/demand a please explain.

Other than that, great list.

Well, this is a list to rank fighters. When was the last time Overeem fought? When is the next time he's going to fight? In a couple of months, he will have dropped off the list completely.

Posted By: Josh (Guest)  on September 08, 2009 at 01:06 AM

How the hell you get Barnett over Wedrum ?
Than you go and put Cain over Barnett ?

Andrei has lost to great fights and he is under Gonzga ?

Carwin over Overreem and the above rest?

Mir 3 ? And Brock 2 ?

Just because you put a UFC belt on a guy doesn't make him #2 or #1 this list is way off

Well, I wouldn't have expected much to change with the whole Fedor/Brock discussion from the last time this ranking rolled out. So no need to revisit that argument.

If Couture announces he is going to fight at LHW, will he be taken off the list for someone that is actually going to fight at HW, or does he have to go a year without fighting at HW? curious

And really...Overeem? The guy with the broken hand that couldn't fight last month but can fight in a kickboxing tournament and hasn't defended his belt in two years? And probably hasn't b/c he doesn't want to fight in the states and be drug tested?

And speaking of drugs...Josh Barnett? really? and we are going to consider any wins he might have legit after he goes to Japan to fight while he is doped up (and they "drug test" him there). Stuff like that should really be taken into consideration.

And poor Arlovski, even out of the whole list he has the sad picture of him getting KOd. I hope he doesn't get knocked out on Bully Beatdown, that might actually take him off this list.

Having Werdum over Dos Antos seems wrong to me seeing how Dos Antos beat another HW fighter after he KTFO of Werdum while Werdum got rocked and almost armbarred by a blown up turd of a LHW in Mike Kyle.

After he murders Mirko at 103, I hope to see Dos Antos push Werdum out of the Top-10 by way of taking Josh Barnett's #9 spot.

Great list. Especially the part with Monson on it. That guy is slowly making his way back to relevancy. Love to see a feel-good story. Hopefully it has a happy ending (not like Couture's)

lol @ Harris ranking Lesnar #1 over Fedor.

Posted By: punchdrunk (Registered)  on September 08, 2009 at 09:39 AM

I have no problem with not ranking Overeem - what is his last big heavyweight win on American soil (i.e. with drug testing). He and Barnett have not proven anything in a clean fight in at least my recent memory.

I know anyone who ranks Lesnar above fedor will get laughed at these days, but I wonder at what point it vecomes acceptable? In just listed fights going back almost 3 years he beat #13 on this list, 2 jokes, a middleweight, and a fighter who lost his nerve (and to Ray Mercer). Brock destroyed #4, and #5 - is fighting #6 next and then probably #3. If he beat Carwin and Noguiera while Fedor continues to fight junk (we'll see if he even fights Rogers or Overeem - I'll believe it when I see it) don't you have to consider moving him to #1?

Posted By: MJH (Guest)  on September 08, 2009 at 10:58 AM

@MJH
I wonder that myself. Personally I can see how Fedor gets ranked higher based on record/history, but when I look at them I honestly don't think Fedor would beat Brock 8 times out of 10. Especially now that Brock has learned a little patience toward guys with jitz. Brock I think would be too big for him the way Couture gave him a good fight, but in the end just couldn't handle the size/power thing. For a big guy, Brock is a lot more athletic and fast than any of the freak fights Fedor has done in the past.

But I guess until they fight each other or Fedor loses to someone while Brock keeps on stacking up a few more wins we'll always see this.

ok - we gotta have captions for the pictures chosen here for the fighters:
1. Fedor - all business (for the studio camera)
2. Lesnar - "should I hit him or kiss him"
3. Nog - Rocky theme playing in the background
4. Mir - hit by a freight train
5. Randy - just had a good ol' time
6. Carwin - looks bored even though he won
7. Allistar - hope the hammer didn't break the hand
8. Velasquez - big time Mexican pride
9. Barnett - can't fight but will model shirts for big men
10. Fabrico - Makin' Chuck Norris proud
11. Rogers - Clubber Lang with scary knees
12. Gonzaga - "somebody needs to change these lights I'm pointing to"
13. Arlovski - "I hope my beard will cusion the fall.."
14. Monson - the Thing from Fantastic 4
15. Junior dos Santos - "Do I look like Chuck Liddell?"

kinda suprised Kongo and cro cop only got honrable mentions but am similary pleased to see Dos Santos finally get ranked, his fight with cro cop should hopefully be a gem. Look out for Todd Duffee.

Jeffrey Harris is a fool. Fedor has been #1 since before Lesnar was even in MMA. Until he loses he will stay at number 1.
