411 MMA Rankings 09.15.09: Pound for Pound
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 09.15.2009
The talent rich Pound for Pound rankings are back! Does Anderson Silva take the crown once again or do we have a new pound for pound king? New blood is also here after Miguel Torres' shocking defeat, but how far has the Chicago native fallen? And where does Fedor Emelianenko land on the list? Check out the latest rankings to see who made the list and why!
Welcome to the best of the best as we present 411mania's MMA rankings for the pound for pound best. Last time we calculated these, Georges St. Pierre bested Fedor Emelianenko and other top fighters to be named the PFP best. The Canadian has fallen out of favor this month and a new fighter is atop the list. Is it a Russian? A Brazilian? Could it even be an American? Stroll down the page to find out.
This is also the first PFP rankings since former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres lost in knockout fashion to Brian Bowles. You can see how many writers felt he automatically became a PFP contender with the upset win and if he placed on the overall list. I did not rank Bowles on my list because I would still want to see more from Bowles before I put him in that category. He's a very good fighter no doubt, but I still have my doubts. Is that wrong?
Another big jump came in the form of heavyweight Minotauro Nogueira, a man who was not even ranked last month. It took a fight of the year candidate (and a win most importantly) to bring back confidence in the Brazilian heavyweight. Now, he is back to being one of the most feared fighters in the world and that automatically means a return into PFP talk for him. Of course, Brock Lesnar is nowhere to be seen here and if you want an explanation, check out the past few PFP lists. Lesnar loses some steam here because a large part of what makes him dangerous is the fact he is so damn larger than his opponents. Of course that won't exactly be the case when he fights Shane Carwin later this year, but I digress.
Enough chatter, let's get on with the show! Thanks for reading and feel free to provide your own top-15 in the comments section at the end of the article should you disagree with us.
Here's some feedback to last week's heavyweight rankings.
From Steven Perry: Jeffery Harris didn't have Overeem in his TOP 15?!?! I want/demand a please explain.
Other than that, great list. Thanks. As for no Overeem in his list...I'd imagine he did so because Overeem has not fought recently.
To respond to Mr. Perry, Josh writes: Well, this is a list to rank fighters. When was the last time Overeem fought? When is the next time he's going to fight? In a couple of months, he will have dropped off the list completely. Perhaps.
From JeremyS: Well, I wouldn't have expected much to change with the whole Fedor/Brock discussion from the last time this ranking rolled out. So no need to revisit that argument.
If Couture announces he is going to fight at LHW, will he be taken off the list for someone that is actually going to fight at HW, or does he have to go a year without fighting at HW? curious
And really...Overeem? The guy with the broken hand that couldn't fight last month but can fight in a kickboxing tournament and hasn't defended his belt in two years? And probably hasn't b/c he doesn't want to fight in the states and be drug tested?
And speaking of drugs...Josh Barnett? really? and we are going to consider any wins he might have legit after he goes to Japan to fight while he is doped up (and they "drug test" him there). Stuff like that should really be taken into consideration.
And poor Arlovski, even out of the whole list he has the sad picture of him getting KOd. I hope he doesn't get knocked out on Bully Beatdown, that might actually take him off this list. As for Couture, we have no idea about his true intentions. His next fight is against Vera @ 205, but we can only assume the fight after may be at heavyweight. Until we get some confirmation or the cloudy picture becomes clearer, Couture will remain eligible for the heavyweight rankings. Will he be eligible for 205 rankings? Stay tuned.
I don't think I can say we should take into account whether Josh Barnett may or may not have taken drugs to boost his performance while in Japan. Regardless of his recent transgressions, he remains one of the top heavyweights in the world.
From dale: Having Werdum over Dos Antos seems wrong to me seeing how Dos Antos beat another HW fighter after he KTFO of Werdum while Werdum got rocked and almost armbarred by a blown up turd of a LHW in Mike Kyle.
After he murders Mirko at 103, I hope to see Dos Antos push Werdum out of the Top-10 by way of taking Josh Barnett's #9 spot. Dos Santos certainly has looked impressive but Werdum, being the bigger name fighter, probably has more leeway in the big picture. I would say with a win against Cro Cop, Dos Santos will make a big run up the list.
From GeeSpotter: Great list. Especially the part with Monson on it. That guy is slowly making his way back to relevancy. Love to see a feel-good story. Hopefully it has a happy ending (not like Couture's) Thank you, Monson's first appearance may be long awaited indeed.
From punchdrunk: lol @ Harris ranking Lesnar #1 over Fedor. Are you trying to start something?
From MJH: I have no problem with not ranking Overeem - what is his last big heavyweight win on American soil (i.e. with drug testing). He and Barnett have not proven anything in a clean fight in at least my recent memory.
I know anyone who ranks Lesnar above fedor will get laughed at these days, but I wonder at what point it vecomes acceptable? In just listed fights going back almost 3 years he beat #13 on this list, 2 jokes, a middleweight, and a fighter who lost his nerve (and to Ray Mercer). Brock destroyed #4, and #5 - is fighting #6 next and then probably #3. If he beat Carwin and Noguiera while Fedor continues to fight junk (we'll see if he even fights Rogers or Overeem - I'll believe it when I see it) don't you have to consider moving him to #1? If you do not take into account fights dating from the turn of the new century through 2007, then Brock Lesnar would probably have to be ranked the best heavyweight. Otherwise, you are taking Fedor as the top man for what he has done throughout the decade. It depends on how you rank your fighters as to which criteria is best.
From JeremyS: @MJH
I wonder that myself. Personally I can see how Fedor gets ranked higher based on record/history, but when I look at them I honestly don't think Fedor would beat Brock 8 times out of 10. Especially now that Brock has learned a little patience toward guys with jitz. Brock I think would be too big for him the way Couture gave him a good fight, but in the end just couldn't handle the size/power thing. For a big guy, Brock is a lot more athletic and fast than any of the freak fights Fedor has done in the past.
But I guess until they fight each other or Fedor loses to someone while Brock keeps on stacking up a few more wins we'll always see this.
From Shane: ok - we gotta have captions for the pictures chosen here for the fighters:
1. Fedor - all business (for the studio camera)
2. Lesnar - "should I hit him or kiss him"
3. Nog - Rocky theme playing in the background
4. Mir - hit by a freight train
5. Randy - just had a good ol' time
6. Carwin - looks bored even though he won
7. Allistar - hope the hammer didn't break the hand
8. Velasquez - big time Mexican pride
9. Barnett - can't fight but will model shirts for big men
10. Fabrico - Makin' Chuck Norris proud
11. Rogers - Clubber Lang with scary knees
12. Gonzaga - "somebody needs to change these lights I'm pointing to"
13. Arlovski - "I hope my beard will cusion the fall.."
14. Monson - the Thing from Fantastic 4
15. Junior dos Santos - "Do I look like Chuck Liddell?" hahaha
From Emo: kinda suprised Kongo and cro cop only got honrable mentions but am similary pleased to see Dos Santos finally get ranked, his fight with cro cop should hopefully be a gem. Look out for Todd Duffee. A mix of surging fighters (Dos Santos, Monson) and a bad recent performance caught up to Kongo. As for Cro Cop, people are still hesitant on him and are waiting to see how he fights Dos Santos.
From Last_Rider: Nice to see the snowman finally get some love. Solid list guys Thanks.
From RedVexx: Jeffrey Harris is a fool. Fedor has been #1 since before Lesnar was even in MMA. Until he loses he will stay at number 1. I assume Harris based his choices on recent history. Look at their last five fights. Fedor has wins over Arlovski, Sylvia, Hong Man Choi, Lindland and Hunt. Lesnar has wins over Mir, Couture, Herring and Min Soo Kim. Dominant wins at that, the same for Fedor.
NOW, back with the rankings......

411's MMA Ranking Rules
- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.
- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.
- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we are not dangerous at all, I won't lie to you.

Great list.

I can't believe anyone would have GSP as low as 4 and 5. I think he's a close 2nd to Silva because of his dominance in all areas over every type of fighter, but i could see Fedor ahead of him in certain arguments. But let Machida win a few more high profile fights with guys like shogun, jackson, and maybe couture before we call him king.

I here by say that 411 fires Patrick Mullin. He obviously doesnt watch MMA at all. Cause there is no way BJ Penn should be rated ahead of GSP. Incase he hasnt noticed GSP has beat him twice. Soo yeah like to see how this is explained.

Anyone who has Rashad Evans over Dan Henderson is smoking crack.

Pretty good list, but I think Miguel Torres doesnt deserve a big drop like this. I think he should be in top10 still.

I still think this list is about 5-10 places too long, the pickings get pretty thin down at the bottom and much more arguable.
The top 5 I pretty much agree with. Until Machida beats a couple of fighters (and if they are much weaker than him, he should finish them hard and fast) then he shouldn't be pushed up much higher.
But Silva definitely comes across as on another level compared with the other fighters on the list and deserves #1.
GSP as well, though not quite in the same way as Silva, so I wouldn't put him ahead of Silva.
Fedor, I'd probably rank him there myself or maybe #4, but at this point you have to give him some recognition on a list like this. If he doesn't fight someone better than Rogers next time out though, I'd bump him down. IMO, to be considered the best of the best, you have to fight some top quality guys in a pretty sound fashion.

Um, you can't have Machida ahead of Silva straight up (LHW rankings) and not have him ahead of Silva here. That just reeks of double-standard. Either Machida is better than Silva or he isn't.

good list. GSP is too high on the list.
lack of competition in the welterweight division. he's beaten only little men outside there weight class and otherwise exclusively wrestlers...
dan henderson would smash him to pieces.
let's not even talk about a fight with anderson......

It's interesting that p4p rankings are built in such an awkward fashion. For exmaple, Brock Lesner gets no votes here, and the argument is a simple one. "He only does what he does because he's so big and strong". I think his 2nd round vs Mir proves otherwise to anyone paying attention, but I digress.
The problem is that this is the only thing mentioned. What about height? Reach? Take Anderson Silva. How many of those names on his list were due in large part to his amazing reach advantage over most opponents? Or GSP. He has a tremendous speed advantage over a large number of his opponents. These are also qualities that these fighters might not have at other levels, or weightclasses, yet they're largely unmentioned, while the heavyweights (except one) are largely written off to being nothing but size.

I think that Rampage might be the most overrated fighter in the UFC. He lost to Griffin, has no ground game and no variety in his strikes.
Who has he really beat? Chuck Liddell and Vanderlei Silva, two guys who get knocked out a lot these days and are nowhere near what they used to be. Dan Henderson, by a very close decision, who is also smaller than him.
Don't get me wrong I like the guy, but to me he doesn't deserve to be on a P4P list.
Also, Mousasi behind him and Rashad doesn't seem right to me.

Actually Rampage was the first one to knock Chuck out. So the fact that Chuck got knocked out by Evans and Shogun after is irrelevant.
Plus Rampage had already destroyed Liddell back in 2003 as well.

I can't believe how little respect Fitch gets. It just shows what kind of effect media attention and internet buzz have on these rankings.

Fedor & GSP>>>>>>>>>>>Silva
Prove me wrong

Is John Fitch retarded?? Look at that pic. Look at his record too. Decision, decision, decision, decision.......UFC needs the yellow card Pride rule bad to keep these wrestlers from humping their opponents for 15 minutes (cough Gray Maynard).........

GSP number 4 and 5 is absolutely insane, and ridiculous

I can't believe Silva is #1. All the Griffin fight proved is he can beat an average fighter, get him the hell out of the top spot. GSP and Fedor could trade top spot, I think there is a big bias towards Fedor for not signing with the UFC, which isn't fair and shouldn't count against him in a poll based on skill. GSP is a freak of nature right now, and I think his complete domination(unlike Silva playing around with people, or not engaging the fight at all) has become so routine that people just expect it, and he gets overlooked. He should definitely be #1.
And Torres loses 1 fight and drops like 10 spots almost? That is retarded, Faber has lost 2 of 3 and to the same person, Torres lost for the first time in years. Rashad Evans is above him, that is a joke.
