411 MMA Rankings 10.06.09: Welterweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 10.06.2009
The 411mania MMA welterweight rankings return with some spiciness as Josh Koscheck and Carlos Condit returned to their winning ways. Paul Daley shook up the UFC with a win over Martin Kampmann, now will he make his debut in our rankings? Dan Hardy will fight Mike Swick to determine the next contender for GSP, where do they rank? A former top contender returns this month, who is he and does he deserve the spot? Read on for all that and much more.
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for reading the weekly 411mania MMA Rankings and this week we serve up the best welterweights in the world. Georges St. Pierre may be awaiting a challenger but that takes nothing away from him, as he remains the unanimously top ranked welterweight on the planet. One of those supposed contenders was Martin Kampmann who moved well into the top 10 last month when he defeated Carlos Condit. Some expected him to continue his rise but he suffered defeat at the hands of Paul Daley. Now how far has Kampmann fallen? Disappointing for him, indeed.
Perennial underdog Brock Larson lost his preliminary fight at UFC 103 and even though his record now stands at 28-3, he is unranked yet again. With his previous losses coming against the likes of Jon Fitch and Carlos Condit, perhaps that means Mike Pierce will become a big time player sooner than later.
The next big fights in this division will close out the year in the next two months. UFC 106 will feature #2 ranked Jon Fitch fighting former middleweight Ricardo Almeida in his welterweight debut. UFC 107 will feature former top contender Thiago Alves in a battle with fellow Brazilian Paulo Thiago, fresh off his defeat at the hands of Jon Fitch this past summer.
Josh Koscheck may have called out Matt Hughes after his UFC 103 victory over Frank Trigg, but don't expect Hughes to walk into that trap. With Fitch being a fellow American Kickboxing Academy member, Koscheck insists he won't fight him. Koscheck has lost to Alves, so what other top welterweight is left for him to fight in the near future? How about a match against Carlos Condit or Karo Parisyan should he be victorious in his return to the octagon?
Enough with the what if's, let's get down to business.
Below is feedback to last week's light heavyweight rankings and afterwards, enjoy the updated welterweight rankings.
To the feedback from last week's LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT RANKINGS
From Mr. Bonnar:
Forrest needs to retire in shame!!! Thanks for commenting sir, sour grapes, no?
From wylun:
wat the.. could rampage still even be on this list since hes NO LONGER a active fighter?! Rampage's situation will be dealt with once it can be determined if he is actually retired or not. You wouldn't want us to act hastily, now would you?
From yoda:
FORREST WILL BE BACK!!! ...from the store?
From Cody:
god, people still believe forrest is a top level elite fighter? hes super overrated, and although he did just retire because he is retired I wouldn't include rampage on the list just cause he is done fighting. How is Griffin overrated? He's not considered the best but he is up there, definitely one of the top 10. He has wins over Shogun Rua and Rampage, he's no flake. Rampage will be included until either a) March 2010 rolls around and he has not fought or has no plans to or b) it can be determined he's actually serious about retiring
From Fear_Inc.:
You know... to be honest, I really think the whole Silva + Machida + Lil'Nogueira… "We are all Buddy buddy, happy Brazilian friends that will not fight each other Club"... That's just pure BullShit on a Stick!... I think their just using this as an excuse so that nobody loses their so called "mystique"... think about it: Silva vs. Machida… who ever loses, that one is going to lose all his momentum… let's say they decide to do a "catch weight" fight… if Machida loses… "He looks beatable and then he loses his so call champion "glow", because he loss to the Middle weight champion… (Losing to "The Spider" is nothing to be ashamed of) but let's face it… Machida, will not like to lose his "undefeated" streak, to someone who's not even fighting him, for his title. If Silva Loses… "He will immediately look as "weak" because he loss to a fighter he didn't wanted to face, so then they will say that he didn't want to have the match because he knew he was going to lose (the internet will immediately have a Hard On of Joy, with this…) an then he loses his so call champion glow, because he loss to the Light Heavy weight champion… And if Lil'Nogueira… decides to challenge any one of them, no fence to the younger Nogueira, he's going to get his ass handed to him…
So the only easy solution… "Let's not fight, so we are all happy"… no matter how professional you are "Losing" in any type of scenario will bother you, BIG TIME!!!... As far as the whole "friends shouldn't fight each other theory" goes… that situation has happened, at least 2 to 3 times, on every season of The Ultimate Fighter, to date… so this is just a cheap excuse… That's my opinion on the subject… "Friends" during a TUF season is not the same thing as a pair of guys who have been training every day together for years (Jardine/Evans for example). I see your point and the UFC's official point, that fighters are paid to fight, period.
From A. Coolman:
Quinton Jackson is to retired as Santa Claus is to real. We shall see soon enough.
From Diavo:
See, I told you Rampage was overrated! Ok retired doesn't necessarily equal overrated but still...
Top Ten Guys who would beat Forrest Griffin if they fought, let's say, next month:
1. Thiago Silva
2. Luis Cane
3. Lil' Nog
4. Jon Jones
5. Rich Franklin
6. Chuck Liddell
7. Matyushenko
8. Brandon Vera
9. Sokoudjou
10. Matt Hamill
Maybe I'm exaggerating just to make a point but honestly I could see Forrest losing against any of those guys. Anybody can lose to anybody. Really, you think Sokoudjou can beat Griffin? Now you're just piling on.
From GeeSpotter:
Well, at least Bonnar's not on here anymore.
I would like to add that I don't believe Franklin should necessarily be ranked higher, but I do believe (9 times out of 10) that he would beat Sobral so he should be ranked higher than Babalu. Maybe it's just me. Hell, I think Bones would beat Babalu also.
I think it's also cool that Gegard was quoted as saying that all the best light heavyweights are in the UFC, but he's still new to fighting so he's comfortable in Strikeforce. You know for a fact this guy wants in on the Dana Circus When was the last time Bonnar was ranked? Long time ago I surmise. Mousasi is young enough that he can round up the non-UFC 205ers and by the time he's ready (contract wise) to sign with the UFC, he'll still be young enough to dominate for a long time.
From DB22:
Is it just me who thinks the light heavyweight division is getting a bit thin now that various contenders are retired/on hiatus or changing wait class? I predict Bader, Arona and Paulo Filho (who is now commited to the 205 division) will get ranked by next year. I'll also add that the winners of Coutore vs Vera and Coleman vs Ortiz should be in with a chance of getting ranked.
If Shogun beats Machida will Dana make Anderson Silva the number one contenter? I'd take that bet (Filho making these rankings in three months). Tito Ortiz, I have a feeling, if he wins, will show up somewhere. As for Mark Coleman, he would have to be impressive in victory. With Randy Couture, it's a decision (to rank him as a 205er) we will consider afterwards.
From Carney:
For you idiots complaining why Rampage is on the list even though he's "retired", the very first rule of the rankings states that the rankings include anyone who fought within the past calendar year. No comment. :)
From Jeremy S:
Pretty good list, not much I would disagree with.
I'm sure some more will get weeded out by the next time if they don't show something (like Jardine and Forrest).
But I'm very interested to see what Mousasi and Jones do in the coming year. Jones and Mousasi may be the kings of the division in 3 or 4 years time. (Mousasi sooner most likely)
From 'smart' dude:
How is silva going to be #3 with 1 fight in Lhw? It's funny cause a real site (sherdog) doesn't even have him in the top 10 Anderson Silva is 2-0 as a light heavyweight (first of all). He blasted James Irvin and toyed with Forrest Griffin, a former champion, before blasting him to pieces. Glancing at that real sites ranking (what? are we just part of your imagination?), Anderson Silva is not ranked at all at 205 because he is the 185 champion. We don't restrict it like that so 411mania considers Anderson Silva the third best light heavyweight on the planet and the best middleweight on earth. Oh yeah.

411's MMA Ranking Rules
- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.
- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and include your own set of rankings if you would!
- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we can spread out and run away so you wouldn't even be able to catch us all anyhow.

Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Mike Swick - UFC 105 - November 14, 2009
Comment: Hardy will be fighting for the opportunity to challenge GSP when he takes on Mike Swick next month. Currently ranked at 13, Hardy may be the lowest ranked fighter with such an opportunity right now. Of course, a win over Swick should push him into the top ten, at the least.
14) Yoshiyuki Yoshida (10-3)
Height: 5'11
Birthday: May 10, 1974
Currently Fighting With: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Brandon Wolff - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida - May 23, 2009

- vs. Ryo Chonan - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 78 - Validation - November 17, 2007
- vs. Josh Burkman - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson - May 26, 2007
- vs. Drew Fickett - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night 7 - December 13, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Dustin Hazelett - UFC 106 - November 21, 2009
Comment: Parisyan returns from his suspension next month to fight up-and-coming submission artist Dustin Hazelett. Parisyan needs a win as bad as anyone in the UFC these days.
Closing Comments: Other fighters receiving votes include Dustin Hazelett, Marcus Davis, Dong Hyun Kim, Brock Larson, Matt Serra and Hayato Sakurai.
Jake Shields was ineligible this month for the first time as a welterweight because it appears he is dedicating himself to fighting as a middleweight. It has been over a year since he last competed at 170-pounds, having defeated Robbie Lawler at a catchweight nearest to middleweight. He will challenge Mayhem Miller for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight championship next month.
ya i guess rampage will prob be back in 2010.. who knows.. but god. i cant believe DAN HARDY is in the contender running.. i hope swick whoops his ass
Posted By: wylun (Guest) on October 05, 2009 at 11:23 PM
really, you feel the need to rank Karo? Even money says he backs out of his fight, same as before his fight with Kim.
Posted By: Last_Rider (Guest) on October 06, 2009 at 02:01 AM
Admittedly, Hardy should not be fighting for no.1 contendership, but why do you really not like him? Is it because he is undeserving of a shot, or is it because in his build to fighting an American fighter he made some correct remarks about Davis NOT actually being Irish?
To be fair, what has Swick done to fully deserve a title shot? I'd say that Hardy's Welterweight scalps are just as impressive as Swicks.

Zenko v. Rumble is going to be sweet!

Karo? Karo? you have got to be kidding. that douche shouldn't be anywhere near a top 15.
Posted By: stronelis (Guest) on October 06, 2009 at 09:37 AM
UFC is in a tough spot with title shots as GSP has beaten most of the top competitors now, and while Fitch may deaserve a rematch it is not something the fans are clamoring for. I have no problem with Swick - Hardy fighting for a title shot. I just wish GSP would fight Silva while he waited.
Nick Diaz is way overrated - he list of wins is far from impressive in Strikeforce. Scott Smith is the best, and wasn't even a UFC gatekeeper. Plus no one else on this list would have ever lost to KJ Noons - or blew up the Main Event of a show for the wacky weed, well maybe Karo. Dump that bozo too.....

Hughes is way too high, he shouldn't even be above Hardy. He's dodging every top welterweight in the UFC. He's refusing to fight top competition.
Karo, and all fighters serving non-medical suspensions, shouldn't be ranked at all.
Posted By: KSti (Registered) on October 06, 2009 at 12:44 PM
How the hell is Hughes tied 7th with Diaz? Diaz is on a 5 fight win streak whereas Hughes shouldn't be top 10, 2-3 in his last 5 fights (that's only a 40% win ratio) plus he's ducking guys left and right and trying to live off past accomplishments.
Dan Hardy at #13?? Should be top 10 He's also on a 5-fight win streak and he's going into a title eliminator for the right to get an ass whoopin' from GSP

Matt Hughes is absolutely nowhere near a title shot in the UFC, even if GSP drops the belt, he needs at least three back to back wins, with at least one or two BIG names in there. He should be as low as Karo, because neither of these guys are anywhere near top of the Welterweight list. Hughes 14, Karo 15, with everyone else on the list ahead of them, because now it's Hughes and Karo needing to beat guys like Hardy and Daley.

I'm looking for Nate Marquardt to make it up there. He's had some pretty impressive victories. I was watching UFC 88 last night and was blown away by how he handled Kampmann. Also I wanna see more of Dong Hyun Kim.

i don't understand koscheck at #4 at all, the guy is 2-2 in the last year with 1 of those wins being over "mr irrelevant" frank trigg.. i'd have him behind condit, who i believe won the kampamann fight.
guys like daley and zaromskis have a lot of potential but are basically only ranked so high because of their last fights. but daley looked like the real deal.
i'm glad diaz didn't get ranked any higher, because his quality of opponents is terrible. the welterweight division as a whole gets pretty thin after #6

Condit is not top 10 (or he has been performing badly for his entire UFC run..) and neither is Zaromskis at the moment. Zaromskis hasn't beaten anyone in the top 15 yet.

A year ago, you ranked Hughes as #7.
Since then, he's only beaten Serra and somehow some of you have him ranked higher?
Seriously people- let go of the past. There are times when a "what have you done for me now" mentality is needed... this is one of them.
Matt is 2-3 in his last 5, has only fought those 5 in the past 3 years, and they are both decision wins over Serra and Lytle...

i agree with everyone saying hughes is overated and dodgeing fights. Dan
Hornbuckle should really be ranked. Paulo thiago and mike pierce possibly too.
