411 MMA Rankings 10.13.09: Middleweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 10.13.2009
The 411 MMA Staff rank the best middleweights in the world. See how Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson can compare with Anderson Silva. Where does #1 contender Vitor Belfort rank after his destruction of Rich Franklin? Can Michael Bisping remain a top-15 fighter? Read on for all your answers.
Welcome to the latest edition of the middleweight rankings courtesy of 411mania's MMA zone. Every week we rank the top 15 fighters in one of the five main weight classes and the pound-for-pound best in MMA. This week it is time to see how the middleweight division stacks up since we last saw them. There has not been a lot of action besides Vitor Belfort's UFC debut when he went all Anderson Silva on Rich Franklin at UFC 103. However, there is a lot of action coming up in the coming weeks and months inside this division. Although not official, it does seem the UFC will book Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt against each other to determine the new number one contender (after Belfort). Whether Dan Henderson signs a new deal to return to the UFC or not, only time will tell.
Elsewhere, the Strikeforce middleweight division is looking at a comeback. Cung Le was stripped of the title and the strap will now be decided in less than a month on CBS when Jake Shields challenges Jason Miller. Neither fighter is a top-five ranked middleweight this month but with a big win on network television, you can bet that will change.
Lastly, one of the surprising facts about this month's ranking...Michael Bisping is nowhere to be found. That's right, for the first time since December of 2008, Bisping is not considered one of the top-15 middleweights. This is not a reaction to UFC 100 since Bisping was ranked after that debacle. Have people just plain soured on the British import? Perhaps it's a knock on him for not defeating the very best competition he has fought. He may have wins over Matt Hamill (cough), Jason Day and Chris Leben but he has losses against Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson, the biggest opponents he has fought. Bisping will fight Denis Kang next month in an interesting match-up for both men.
Enough with the chatter, let's move on with the show. As always, thanks for reading and supporting 411mania. We appreciate it.
FEEDBACK to Last Week's Welterweight Rankings
From Wylun:
ya i guess rampage will prob be back in 2010.. who knows.. but god. i cant believe DAN HARDY is in the contender running.. i hope swick whoops his ass GSP is as good as Silva in getting rid of all challengers. As champion, GSP has beaten Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn and Thiago Alves. As a contender, GSP has beaten Josh Koscheck, Sean Sherk, Penn, Frank Trigg, Mayhem Miller, Jay Hieron, Karo Parisyan and others. The list of potential title contenders right now is very limited. After Mike Swick, the list runs pretty dry unless you include guys like Dan Hardy and Paul Daley (now).
From Last_Rider:
really, you feel the need to rank Karo? Even money says he backs out of his fight, same as before his fight with Kim. I feel the same way as you towards Parisyan. I won't rank him until he proves he can win, and win clean again. Parisyan did not receive overwhelming favor but enough to clock in at the last possible spot this month.
From A. Coolman:
Zenko v. Rumble is going to be sweet! It definitely should be. The winner between Anthony Johnson and Yoshida takes another step up in my mind. With a solid performance, Johnson could be a player.
From stronelis:
Karo? Karo? you have got to be kidding. that douche shouldn't be anywhere near a top 15. Well, he was once a top contender. That should count for something, right?
From MJH
UFC is in a tough spot with title shots as GSP has beaten most of the top competitors now, and while Fitch may deaserve a rematch it is not something the fans are clamoring for. I have no problem with Swick - Hardy fighting for a title shot. I just wish GSP would fight Silva while he waited.
Nick Diaz is way overrated - he list of wins is far from impressive in Strikeforce. Scott Smith is the best, and wasn't even a UFC gatekeeper. Plus no one else on this list would have ever lost to KJ Noons - or blew up the Main Event of a show for the wacky weed, well maybe Karo. Dump that bozo too..... Criticize Diaz all you want but the man is a solid fighter. He has improved his striking with more boxing training and his ground skills, well, everyone knows.
From KSti:
Hughes is way too high, he shouldn't even be above Hardy. He's dodging every top welterweight in the UFC. He's refusing to fight top competition.
Karo, and all fighters serving non-medical suspensions, shouldn't be ranked at all. Parisyan has served his suspension and is scheduled to return to the octagon next month. As for Hughes, who said he's refusing? The deal with Koscheck probably isn't a smart fight for him style wise. Should he be ranked #7? I could go either way.
From UK MMA Fan:
How the hell is Hughes tied 7th with Diaz? Diaz is on a 5 fight win streak whereas Hughes shouldn't be top 10, 2-3 in his last 5 fights (that's only a 40% win ratio) plus he's ducking guys left and right and trying to live off past accomplishments.
Dan Hardy at #13?? Should be top 10 He's also on a 5-fight win streak and he's going into a title eliminator for the right to get an ass whoopin' from GSP Dan Hardy may be on a five-fight win streak, but so is Jay Hieron while Zaromskis and Daley have looked very impressive of late.
From Jon:
Matt Hughes is absolutely nowhere near a title shot in the UFC, even if GSP drops the belt, he needs at least three back to back wins, with at least one or two BIG names in there. He should be as low as Karo, because neither of these guys are anywhere near top of the Welterweight list. Hughes 14, Karo 15, with everyone else on the list ahead of them, because now it's Hughes and Karo needing to beat guys like Hardy and Daley. I'm curious how they use Matt Hughes going forward. Will he face newer faces or still be put in contention with the likes of Swick/Hardy/Daley, etc. Should Hughes be at the end of the rankings? Sure he is 2-3 in his last five fights but two losses to the best in GSP and the other came against another top guy in Alves. Perhaps he should be out of the top 10 though.
From buddha:
i don't understand koscheck at #4 at all, the guy is 2-2 in the last year with 1 of those wins being over "mr irrelevant" frank trigg.. i'd have him behind condit, who i believe won the kampamann fight.
guys like daley and zaromskis have a lot of potential but are basically only ranked so high because of their last fights. but daley looked like the real deal.
i'm glad diaz didn't get ranked any higher, because his quality of opponents is terrible. the welterweight division as a whole gets pretty thin after #6 Koshcheck is given a pass by most for the KO loss to Thiago. With that said, he showed a lot of talent in the defeat to Alves last year. He is a top talent, but perhaps he should be a bit lower in favor of a guy like Swick who has won more in the recent past.
From saerbarnet:
Condit is not top 10 (or he has been performing badly for his entire UFC run..) and neither is Zaromskis at the moment. Zaromskis hasn't beaten anyone in the top 15 yet. Condit has had two fights and is 1-1 while the loss was in a very close split-decision. I wouldn't say he's been bad at all. As for Zaromskis, perhaps he is a bit high off his recent Grand Prix victory. But he was damn impressive in that run.
From cyks:
a year ago, you ranked Hughes as #7.
Since then, he's only beaten Serra and somehow some of you have him ranked higher?
Seriously people- let go of the past. There are times when a "what have you done for me now" mentality is needed... this is one of them.
Matt is 2-3 in his last 5, has only fought those 5 in the past 3 years, and they are both decision wins over Serra and Lytle... Now you have a point. People still have an idea of Hughes in their mind that he can still compete at the very top level. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen and we can judge based on only his fight record. But again, his losses have only come against the best competition, so it's not like he is losing to scrubs.
Thanks for the comments, questions, and love/hate. It's always appreciated

411's MMA Ranking Rules
- A fighter must fight at least once within the past calendar year to be ranked. The rule applies to weight classes as well so fighters must stay active inside their native weight class. However, if a fighter has a fight scheduled, they are eligible to be ranked.
- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and include your own set of rankings if you would!
- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the staff of 411mania. If you wish to duel over any ranking, contact me and we can work something out. I may be busy but I am almost positive 411's resident Tool is available for such occasions. If not, a comment below can serve you just as well.

Comment: Lindland signed a deal with Strikeforce near the end of the summer and has yet to find out who he will fight. Hopefully he fights before the end of the year.
Closing Comments: Others receiving votes include Denis Kang, Michael Bisping, Chael Sonnen, Hector Lombard, Joey Villasenor, Rousimar Palhares and Alessio Sakara.
Trigg's first fight on his new UFC deal is at welterweight versus Josh Koscheck. After that fight and once his future becomes clearer, a decision will be made to either move him to welterweight or keep him amongst our middleweight rankings.
Both Jorge Santiago and Matt Lindland have about three months to either fight or be booked for a fight or risk becoming ineligible to be ranked.
Ok seriously guys where is Tomasz Drwal !!!!!! He only lost to LHW Thiago Silva and that was only due to exhaustion. He even wont he first round in that fight!
Posted By: Tomasz_Drwal (Guest) on October 13, 2009 at 12:13 AM
why do you rank mayhem? Not a big deal, he won't be ranked after November. He just isn't very good, the only reason he is relevant is because of his personality.
Posted By: reality check (Guest) on October 13, 2009 at 12:33 AM
why haven't we seen Yushin Okami on a main card/televised card in ages..
Posted By: wylun (Guest) on October 13, 2009 at 12:49 AM
My lone issue would be with Thales, personally I'd swap him with Palhares. Palhares lost to Hendo, no shame, and rebounded nicely with a win over Horn, and I think he trains out of Black House, though I could easily be wrong about that.
Anyway, I find him to be a better all around fighter, and he certainly has a bigger up-side than Leites. Beyond that, solid list

Seeing Sexiyama above Maia makes me sad.
And sure everyone hates Bisping but I think he's more talented than Miller and Leites.
Aside from that, it's nice to see Okami, Jacare and Shields getting respect.

how did alessio sakara gets votes for for his running man impersonation last fight? Lombard and Palhares are both very underated.
Posted By: bazz (Guest) on October 13, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Ok so someone explain to me why is Leites ranked and Bisping isn't

"Condit has had two fights and is 1-1 while the loss was in a very close split-decision. I wouldn't say he's been bad at all. As for Zaromskis, perhaps he is a bit high off his recent Grand Prix victory. But he was damn impressive in that run."
And Condit's win was a very close split decision against an opponent who isn't top 15 in the world. He has obvious holes in his game and until he fills those he isn't top 10
