The 411 MMA Top 5 10.19.09: Week Sixteen – Best Knockouts
Posted by Larry Csonka on 10.19.2009

Welcome:
Welcome back to the MMA Top 5! What we are going to is take a topic each week and all the writers here on 411 MMA will have the ability to give us their Top 5 on said topic, plus up to three honorable mentions. At the end, based on where all of these topics rank on people's list, we will create an overall Top 5 list.

This week's topic is…

BEST KNOCKOUTS!

Jonathan Solomon

HONORABLE MENTIONS

PRIDE Final Conflict - Cro Cop vs. Wanderlei - Held in the semi-finals of the 2005 Open Weight Grand Prix, this war ended with one strike. A kick to the head.

UFC 70 - Cro Cop vs. Gonzaga - Is it possible a once legendary career could fall apart with one fight. If so, this is the evidence. Such a brutal finish, and a taste of Cro Cop's own medicine.

5. UFC 64 - Franklin vs. Silva - The first meeting between the two and while most suspected Silva could win, did anyone believe he would do so in such fearsome fashion? His knees may still be imprinted on Frankln's face. Two years later, Silva is still beating the competition (even in a heavier weight class) and Franklin won't fight at middleweight.

4. PRIDE - Wanderlei vs. Henderson - The final PRIDE held in the United States featured an historic main event when Dan Henderson knocked out Wanderlei Silva. In the process, Hendo became the first man in MMA to hold two different belts in two different weight classes at the same time. Henderson is a powerful man, just ask Michael Bisping.

3. PRIDE - Wanderlei vs. Rampage - Wanderlei Silva was as feared a striker as anyone in the history of the sport. His two knockout wins over Rampage Jackson in PRIDE are highlight reels to this day. The sight of Rampage's prone body falling through the ring ropes is one of the more memorable PRIDE knockouts..

2. UFC - Koscheck vs. Yoshida - On the Fight for the Troops special, this was the main event fight. Koscheck landed two brutal blows that knocked Yoshida out and forced him to receive medical attention. The sight of Yoshida bouncing off the cage after one shot and receiving another is still one I think about whenever Koscheck is on television.

1. UFC 71 - Rampage vs. The Iceman - After years of anticipation of a rematch, inside the UFC and with the sports world watching, Quinton Jackson ended the fight as quickly as it began. The "end" of Chuck Liddell as everyone knew him (dominant fighter) can be traced to this devastating knockout loss. Plus with all the media coverage the show received, Rampage was introduced to a whole new scope of people. What a first impression, right?

Patrick Mullin

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Affliction: Day of Reckoning Vitor Belfort vs. Matt Lindland - Perfect left hand knocked Matt Lindland into next year.

UFC 70 Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Mirko Crocop - The master of the head kick gets taken out by a perfect one.

UFC 100 Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping - This would place higher had Hendo not intentionally tried to injure an already out cold Bisping.

5. PRIDE Final Conflict Absolute Mirko Cro Cop vs. Wanderlei Silva - Crocop never looked better in a fight. Of course he was fighting a light heavyweight(now middleweight), but this was still pretty one-sided of a beat down. In this fight Crocop showed the flaws in the berserker style of fighting Chute Boxe had made famous by exploiting the many holes in their defense. Wanderlei had no answers for Cro Cop's precise and technical striking. After being bloodied and battered with his face as puffy as someone allergic to shellfish eating at the Sizzler, Wanderlei stumbled forward in round 2 and was struck with a high kick that almost landed like an enziguri and ended the fight in brutal, dramatic fashion.

4. Affliction Day of Reckoning Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski - Boy who saw this coming? Andrei was a very live underdog, especially when he decided to further train his superior striking with boxing guru Freddie Roach. For three minutes he gave Fedor quite the boxing lesson, while Emelianenko struggled to get inside and was usually met with stiff jabs and right hands. Then Andrei for reasons known only to himself decided to get fancy and throw a flying knee at the cornered Fedor, who simply threw a right hook than caught Andrei flush in mid-air and inspired the youtube classic Fedor Emelianenko's Punch-Out. Seriously it's much better than the St. Pierre one.

3. Adrenaline MMA 3 Ray Mercer vs. Tim Sylvia - Its kinda depressing for an old time boxing fan like myself to think Ray Mercer, through hepatitis and hard times while pushing 50 turned to MMA. Against Tim Sylvia I thought I'd see Ray get hurt and MMA die-hards proclaiming boxing is dead, etc. etc. Instead Tim Sylvia came in out of shape, and tried to stand up and fight with a professional boxer. What he got was a perfect counter right cross to the chin that laid him out in 9 seconds.

2. Cage Rage 16 Anderson Silva vs. Tony Fryklund - This was a KO that actually made me say, "Holy shit!" out loud. We all know the versatility of Anderson's striking game. Maybe no fight more than this one showed just how crazy his stand up game is. He hit Fryklund with an elbow thrown in an uppercut style. We see people with Muay Thai backgrounds throw that strike when warming up, but never in an actual fight. Anderson did it, landed it perfectly and scored a KO that hasn't been duplicated in any major venue since. In fact I don't recall anyone even trying it.

1. UFC 102 Nate Marquardt vs. Demian Maia - Want to see why the stand up game is just as relevant as the ground game? Everyone was going ape-shit for Maia's BJJ yet ignored the fact that he had NO visible striking ability. Nate Marquardt was a guy known for his submission game from Pancrase, but made a marked effort to compliment it with a good striking game. The beauty of this KO was in its simplicity. Maia went in to throw a knee strike like a guy who had no business trying to stand up and fight, and Nate landed a perfect right cross that turned his lights out. The punch was flawless. It was right on the button, straight down the pipe, his left hand was held high guarding, and his body pivoted perfectly to put his full power into the punch. As opposed to Dan Henderson's unsportsmanlike showing against Bisping, when Marquardt recognized he was out he didn't follow up.

Daniel Bonnizzio

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Come on Timmy, really? (Adrenaline MMA III) - And Timmah gets knocked out by Ray Mercer. God bless him for not eating a bullet.

Cro Cop takes home Wanderlei's head (PRIDE Final Conflict Absolute) - The fact that Wanderlei bulked up way too uch fro this combined with Cro Cop's technical striking kinda diminishes the feat but the fact is Cro Cop knocked Wanderlei OUT.

Cro Cop, YOU'RE supposed to kick. (UFC 70) - Gonzaga kicked Cro Cop's head off and possibly led to the downfall of Cro Cop's possible UFC career; in doing so instead of Couture/Cro Cop we got Couture/Gonzaga and nobody wanted that.

5. MM, those tasty Axe Murderer knees. (PRIDE Final Conflict 2003) - With numbers ranging from 20 to 27 knees to the head, in the first meeting of Rampage and Silva we saw Silva land a huge amount of unanswered knees to Rampage's head and the ref thought it was over. The sheer amount of knees Wanderlei is able to land and the fact he was able to prevent Rampage from stopping them is a testament to his power. Rampage showed his gut here for eating those knees and I can say I would have given up after 4 or 5.

4. Anderson Silva has elbows made of liquid steel. (Cage Rage 16) - This was one of the first examples I can think of when describing the Spider's versatility in his striking to people. With a backwards uppercut elbow he knocked Tony Fryklund's head into the fifteenth row. The sheer randomness of the strike combined with how badly Tony was knocked out shows Silva's power and accuracy, and this was one of many times I decided to never get Anderson Silva mad, and pacify him whenever possible.

3. Hendo murders the Count (UFC 100) - His corner yelled at him for a full round to stop circling to his left. He didn't listen. he paid for it by running straight into the huge right hand of Dan Henderson, falling right down and taking a canvas nap. Adding to that was the violent forearm Hendo dropped onto Bisping after he was already out and while some point it as unsportsmanlike, I say if Bisping wasn't a prick Henderson wouldn't have felt the need to do it. Seeing Bisping's toes all stiffened up was beautiful.

2. Demian Maia, you should be in cartoons. (UFC 102) - It wasn't the world's most technical combination leading into a hook that knocked him out, nor was it a series of knees and kicks that opened the head up for a high kick. It was a single straight right launched down the pipe hitting the button on Maia's face that caused the BJJ wizard to fly around in a 180-degree circle before face planting onto the canvas. The timing and basic display of great boxing here shown by the Great one turned Maia's high kick attempt into a cartoonish flippy thing and it was a great show.

1. Rampage, meet Wanderlei's knees. (PRIDE 28: High Octane) - The image of Rampage lying unconscious in the middle of the ropes with Wanderlei staring down at him is forever burned into the minds of everyone who ever saw that fight. 5 killer knee strikes to the head and a bucketload of blood later, Wanderlei's hand was raised and declared still the PRIDE Middleweight Champion. The distinct bloodiness and viciousness Silva showed here combined with the damage done to Rampage gets this the all time greatest knockout ever.

Jeffrey Harris

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Mike Brown vs. Urijah Faber I (WEC 34) - Brown destroyed the reign of the WEC poster boy when the poster boy tried to throw a flashy elbow. Don't try that crap with Mike Brown, he will put you down!

5. Nate Marquardt vs. Demian Maia (UFC 102) - I think Demian Maia is an impressive fighter, his submissions and BJJ are fantastic. However, Maia cannot fight people with his attitude of "not wanting" or "not having to hurt my opponent." That's freaking ridiculous when you are in a cage with such a slick and aggressive striker with as much experience as Nate Marquardt. Maia will not be able to survive long term in MMA with this attitude, and Marquardt proved it with his vicious, brutal one punch KO.

4. Hendo ends the Silva Dynasty (Pride 33) - On the greatest MMA card of all time with some crazy upsets, Hendo ended the reign of Pride's only middleweight champion, Wanderlei Silva. Hendo proved he's a true warrior, breaking his trademark power right hand in the first round. So what did Hendo do after breaking his hand? He knocked Silva out with his left. Fantastic finish and great moment to one of my favorite fights and events of all time.

3. Anderson Silva vs. Rich Franklin (UFC 64) - Silva caved in and ruined Franklin's face for life with those sick Thai clinch knees. OK not really, but goodness gracious.

2. Wanderlei Silva vs. Rampage (Pride 28) - Without hyperbole, the sickest and most brutal knockout in Pride history. That image of Rampage going down still scares me and gives me chills to no end.

1. Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping (UFC 100) - The KO heard round the world especially in England when the messiah of British MMA fighters was vanquished by the American Olympic hero, Dan Henderson. Bisping talked a lot of trash and said Henderson was old and over the hill, sloppy with his strikes, and hadn't been able to knock anyone out in years. It's obvious what happened here and why Hendo hasn't gotten his rightfully deserved title shot (he beat the current contender, VITOR BELFORT already). UFC wanted a big middleweight title showdown between Bisping and Silva in like Wimbledon. Hendo spoiled all that. This KO was preceded by such internet gems as BISPING'S ISLAND and some even greater .gif pictures and photoshopped images after it happened.

Samer Kadi

HONORABLE MENTIONS

"Kid" makes short work of Miyata - As soon as the ref signaled the start of the bout, Yamamoto sprinted towards Miyata and knocked him out with a flying knee.

Fedor knocks out Arlovski in mid air - Just because the comments section would go crazy if nobody mentioned this.

Rashad Evans ices Liddell - Did anybody see this coming? Did anybody see it coming in such devastating fashion? Rashad knocked Chuck out with his very own overhand right. It remains one of the best knockouts in UFC history.

5. Hendo murders Bisping - The fact that this took place at UFC 100 makes it even better. After weeks of Bisping talking about Hendo "not having anything aside from a big right hand" and saying that Dan hadn't knocked anyone out in a while, Henderson shut Bisping up with one of most brutal KO's I've ever seen. I genuinely feared for Bisping, especially after the second shot, and was relieved to watch him get back to his feet after a few unsettling minutes.

4. Cro Cop decapitates Wanderlei - While I personally prefer Mirko's head kick KO of Igor, this one edges it out due to the magnitude of the fight. What makes it really special is the way Mirko set it up. He repeatedly punished Wand with some sickening body kicks before nailing the trademark head kick. This remains the highlight of Mirko's career as he would go on to beat Josh Barnett to become the 2006 OWGP champion.

3. Arona gets powerbombed through the ring - While BJJ world champion Ricardo Arona thought he had a tight triangle locked up on Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, the American had other ideas. Rampage proceeded to lift Arona all the way up before dropping him with a pro wrestling-like powerbomb that knocked Arona senseless.

2. Anderson Silva's matrix elbow - For sheer beauty and striking wizardry alone, this deserves to top the list. How on earth did Anderson think of that move, let alone pull it off, I'll never know. In a fight against Tony Fryklund, Anderson Silva landed a jaw dropping standing elbow uppercut that knocked his opponent out. What takes this KO to new levels of awesomeness was the way Silva walked away immediately after landing the shot. He didn't go in to finish his opponent. He didn't even wait for the referee to pull him off. He simply walked away, Joachim Hansen style.

1. Rampage tastes the Axe Murderer's knees… Again - Whenever I think of PRIDE FC, one image springs to mind: A man by the name of Quinton Jackson falling through the ropes, unconscious, with blood literally pouring from his head. In one of the most epic contests in MMA history, PRIDE middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva battled archrival Quinton Rampage Jackson for Silva's title. Silva had stopped Jackson with a savage barrage of knees in their initial bout the previous year. This time around, the result wasn't the same for Jackson… it was worse. After a back and forth battle, Wanderlei landed a devastating right hook that looked to have ended the fight. Amazingly, Rampage (who's famous for having one of the best chins in MMA) remained on his feet, which didn't turn out to be a smart idea. Silva proceeded to land four knees that left Jackson lying motionless through the ropes. Words can't do this KO justice, so check it out for yourselves:

Jeremy Lambert

5. Silva KO's Griffin at UFC 101 - Anderson Silva didn't just KO Forrest Griffin at UFC 101, he broke his warrior spirit. Griffin has always talked that he may not always win but he'll never be broken. Anderson Silva broke him with superior striking and cockiness. Silva finished the job by dropping his hands, avoiding a combination thrown by Griffin, and then knocking him out with a fade away left hand.

4. Cro Cop KO's Silva at PRIDE Final Conflict Absolute - Probably the last time ever we'll see Mirko Cro Cop win via head kick but it certainly was memorable. After battering Silva with counter punches that had Silva's out on his feet and face looking like hamburger, Mirko delivered his trademark left high kick that skimmed across Silva's head, putting him down and out.

3. Silva KO's Jackson at PRIDE 28 - Who can forget Quinton Jackson's body being held up by 2nd rope as blood dripped down to the outside? Certainly not I. Wanderlei Silva landed a big right hand followed by a series of knees that knocked Jackson out cold and effectively ended their PRIDE rivalry. Of course Jackson would get a measure revenge four years later inside the Octagon.

2. Machida KO's Evans at UFC 98 - The visual of Evans falling forward and then quickly flopping backwards with his eyes rolled back in his head will never leave my memory. It was one of the most overacting KO's in MMA history yet Rashad Evans wasn't acting. The lead up to the KO was great as well as Machida kept tagging Evans with punches while Evans was talking trash to him the entire time.

1. Liddell KO's Couture at UFC 52 - Being a big Chuck Liddell fan, I popped huge when he KO'd Couture to capture the UFC Light Heavyweight title. Liddell was able to land the big right hand flush on Couture's chin to knock him down and then pounded him clean out on the ground. It was the first time Couture had ever been knocked out in his career and it wouldn't be the last thanks to another Liddell right hand almost a year later.

    Patrick Mullin is spot on.

Mullin, Henderson merely fought until the official pulled him off. I don't think he "intentionally tried to injure an already out cold Bisping", or else Bisping would've been injured. Also, GSP Punch Out is much better.

    Lambert,

Just because you have a man-crush on Liddell doesn't mean his KO of Randy, while impressive, was anywhere near the top 5, although I do agree with your choice of Rashad/Machida.

    Going old school

Tank Abbott-John Matua UFC 6- The first time we actually thought someone might be seriously hurt at an UFC event when Matua went into convulsions.

Tank Abbott-Steve Nelmark UFC Ultimate 2- This was the definition of a guy being unconscious before he hit the ground.

Petey Williams- Mark Coleman UFC 17- An iconic moment as it showed big, tough, strong guys weren't going to dominate the UFC anymore. Skill was starting to come to the forefront.

A personal fave: Alistair Overeem gassing in Overeem/Kharitonov II. Sergei takes Alistair apart with jabs and a the right uppercut, forcing Overeem to turn and flee. Segei pursues, lands a monstrous right to the back of the head, knocking Alistair's now-unconcious body between the ropes.

I'm shocked that Rashad's KO win against Chuck only received one vote. He dropped Chuck with a right hook he took from his back pocket and sent Chuck to sleep. It was one of the few times I've been legitimately concerned for a fighters health.
As far as impact on the sport goes, Hollywood's KO on Wanderlei was absolutely huge. Wanderlei was the crowned King of the division, holding the title for several years. Had Pride not sold to Zuffa, we'd be talking about this KO a helluva lot more.
As far as CroCop kills go, I personally believe that his LHK on Igor Vovchanchyn was more visually impressive than his LHK on Wanderlei. He landed that bitch square on the jaw, sending ripples thru Igor's head.
Patrick Mullen- Come on man. Let's not get overly sensitive here. To say that Hollywood's KO was less impressive because he try to injure Bisping AFTER the fact is ludicrous.
Props to Samer Kadi for remembering Rampage's powerbomb delivered to Arona. You had the truest list here.

Mullin, the list is best knockouts not best displays of sportsmanship or best considerate MMA sweethearts.

Too "Rageforthemachine"... DAMM Skippy... Those Reek of Awesomeness! Plus... Some love for KO beat-Down's:

    - Rich Franklin's K'The Fuck Out'O, Punch to Nate Quarry's Jaw.

    - Vitor Belfort's 100 Punches in 5 seconds on Wanderlai Silva.

    - Matt Serra Going Full Tilt Boggie on GSP.

    - Wanderlai Silva's Guilty Pleed of Axe Murdering, Keith Jardine.

    - Houston Alexander's Mama Said Knock You, Da' Fuck Out to Keith Jardine.

    - Brian Bowles destroying the place where Miguel Torres's Mullet goes.

All of you forgot the brutal KO of all time. Belfort v Eastman. Marvin looked like someone took an axe to face.

The right KO was probably number 1. I would of liked to of seen a slam KO included somewhere though. Either from Frank Shamrock, Rampage Jackson, or Matt Hughes.

what is this list about? Most meaningful KOs,or the most spectacular ones?

If its about the most spectacular ones...I think I could name 5 KOs from this year that wasnt on any of your lists, and better than the final list.

1.) Marcus Aurelio capoeira kick KO against Keegan Marshall (North America Challenge #24) - this is the best Ive ever seen,by far
2.) José Aldo DOUBLE flying knee KO under 8 minutes against Cub Swanson (WEC 41)
3.) Nate Marquardt mortal kombat fatality against Wilson Gouveia (UFC 95)
4.) Yahir Reyes spinning backfist against Estevan Payan (Bellator VI)

I dont now about no.5,but its a tossup between Fedors mid-air shot,Zaromskis head kick KO on Sakurai,Zaromskis head kick KO on High,Ninjas head kick KO on Stiebling.

In my humle opinion,Hendersons KO not even close to this years top 5,let alone all time. Of course if you are a born UK-hater,its another story...

I remember a fight...that ended with an epic flying knee, maybe someone can help me recall who it was. Basically fighter A landed a good punch combo, fighter B (being overly cocky) stepped back and shook his hand like he wasn't hurt. So fighter A sprung out of nowhere and clobbered B with an insane knee. Made me an instant fan of MMA.

Rageforthemachine, thanks for remembering UFC didnt just start 5 or 6 years ago. I cant believe no one wrote up any of the early fights. I will throw in Goodridge crucifix elbowing 18 times to the head of Herrera before the ref decided that was enough brain damage.

Mr. Kadi, Evans didn't KO Liddell with an overhand right. Chuck was throwing one and Evans beat him to the punch with an underhand hook/uppercut.

"In fact I don't recall anyone even trying it." In regards to Silva's awesome uppercut KO of Tony Fryklund. Check out Faber vs. Brown 1. Faber looked as if he was going for this exact move, but it had opposite effects as Faber was he one KO'd.

Someone obiviously over looked Igor Vovchanchyn/Francisco Bueno at Pride 8. Igor knocked him out with a right hook and then three more times before Francisco hit the canvas out cold.

Loved that one. Didn't really prove much though, as Coleman spent most of that fight on top of him IIRC.

    - Vitor Belfort's 100 Punches in 5 seconds on Wanderlai Silva.

That might be my fave knockout of all time. Vitor looked unstoppable back then.

Kid, Matt Hughes was unconscious when he dropped Newton on his head, therefore, it wasn't even really a KO, they were both out.

Woody, you are incorrect. Chuck was throwing a wide looping uppercut with his right hand, to which Rashad countered with an overhand right.

Surprised Henderson got so much man-love for the Bisping k.o. Other than k.o'ing a guy that was a mouthy prick making it more personal, it wasn't much technically or brutality wise by top standards. He k.o'd a guy he was a better fighter than easily with a right bomb that is his major weapon. Impressive but not great.
The top two are more than worthy of being on any list of top k.o's though.
Anderson Silva's is pure WTF jaw-dropping stuff and Wenderlei's is as brutal as they get.

People act like Hendo is the first person to hit someone after they knew the guy was out. For someone who watches a lot of MMA you should notice that it happens all the time. Stop acting like Hendo is some murderous monster, he did what every MMA fighter is supposed to do, fight until the ref stops the fight. If Hendo had enough to time realize that Bisping was out, then so did the ref, he should have stopped Hendo from landing the strike.

Mr. Kadi, Evans didn't KO Liddell with an overhand right. Chuck was throwing one and Evans beat him to the punch with an underhand hook/uppercut.

Mr Woody, rewatch the fight. It was Chuck who was throwing an uppercut and Evans beat him to the punch with an overhand right.

LoL. I never get tired of seeing Rampage draped through the ropes, back when Wanderlei actually used his Muay Thai. Igor/Bueno, Fedor/Arlovski, Hendo/Bisping, Mousasi's up-kick on Jacare (only other time I've seen that was Renzo/Oleg) and Gilbert Yvel's high-kick K0 on Gary Goodridge are all great ones as well.

Patrick Mullen you are a dumbass. Hendo was 100% right to get that last shot in

    All those were good choices.

I just have to mention the Bisping KO though. It was the first time I have gone to a sport bar to watch a fight and add that to the fact that me and obviously everyone else there hated Bisping. The energy there was crazy when he got KO'd. I've never heard a couple hundred guys all scream BOOM! with every punch on every replay all together before. It was crazy.
