411 MMA Rankings 10.20.09: Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 10.20.2009

Welcome to the latest release of the 411mania MMA Rankings. This week we bring to you the top fifteen heavyweights in the world. Unlike last week's middleweight list, the next few months are jam packed with big heavyweight fights. Four of the top five heavyweights will be in action before the end of 2009 and even Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira just competed two months ago. You know what that means? The possibility of major turnover is alive and well. It's up to those top five fighters to make sure the upsets do not come to fruition or this list will be ch...ch...ch...changing (oh yeah!).

As of now, the guy getting the most publicity may be Fedor Emelianenko. Judging by how much CBS you watch (heh, it's better than NBC), you have seen thirty second spots at various times promoting Fedor's next fight on November 7th. How good those spots are at promoting the actual event, we will find out in a few weeks.

UFC 104 is this Saturday night and one of the big fights on the card features Cain Velasquez against UFC newcomer Ben Rothwell. This month, Rothwell makes his first appearance as a ranked fighter. This sets the table for him to shoot up the list next month should he defeat the UFC's golden prospect in Velasquez. On the other hand, if Velasquez can make it past Rothwell in impressive fashion, he may be next in line (along with Big Nog) for a shot at the champion.

A man who use to be at the ass end of these rankings a year ago, Antonio "Big Foot" Silva returns to the United States MMA scene next month on CBS and has a big test in front of him. He will be fighting Fabricio Werdum, top ten ranked Fabricio Werdum. Like I mentioned before, the potential for upheaval is alive and well.

Here's some feedback to last week's middleweight rankings.

From Tomas:
Ok seriously guys where is Tomasz Drwal !!!!!! He only lost to LHW Thiago Silva and that was only due to exhaustion. He even wont he first round in that fight!
Drwal is 17-2 overall and 3-1 in the UFC. He should at least get someone to vote for him but I'm not sure he's ready to make an appearance as a top-15 fighter in the middleweight division. He only made his 185 debut last month with the win over Drew McFedries. With continued top competition and wins, he'll be here soon enough.

From Reality:
why do you rank mayhem? Not a big deal, he won't be ranked after November. He just isn't very good, the only reason he is relevant is because of his personality.
Mayhem is 3-1-1 in his last five fights and while he may not be fighting the best competition, he is a solid fighter. I do see him as one of the top 15 middleweights in the world.

From wylun:
why haven't we seen Yushin Okami on a main card/televised card in ages...
Okami has only been on a televised UFC card once since his UFC 72 defeat to Rich Franklin in June 2007. That means he was on the prelim's twice out of three fights, not bad for a guy many label as boring. Okami has also been injured for a time so that explains some of the time off. The UFC is just looking to put on fights they find the most impressive. Besides his KO of Evan Tanner and Kalib Sarnes, he has fought to a decision in the rest of his UFC fights. It does suck though because Okami should receive a title shot if he can beat Chael Sonnen, but I doubt he will.

From Last_Rider:
My lone issue would be with Thales, personally I'd swap him with Palhares. Palhares lost to Hendo, no shame, and rebounded nicely with a win over Horn, and I think he trains out of Black House, though I could easily be wrong about that.
Anyway, I find him to be a better all around fighter, and he certainly has a bigger up-side than Leites. Beyond that, solid list
I'm not sure if he still does but I know Palhares trained with the Brazilian Top Team camp earlier this year. I'd agree with you that Palhares has a bigger upside than Thales Leites but Leites is still a name to some people. Leites, even with his last two UFC losses, is a dangerous fighter who just hit a road of bad fights. That's some people's opinions at least.

From Diavo:
Seeing Sexiyama above Maia makes me sad.

And sure everyone hates Bisping but I think he's more talented than Miller and Leites.

Aside from that, it's nice to see Okami, Jacare and Shields getting respect.
Like I mentioned last week, Bisping gets knocked because when he has fought elite caliber fighters, he has lost. Whether he's as talented or morse so than Mayhem or Leites, that is debatable. If Leites gets him down, he can submit him probably easily. Miller and Bisping would actually be a pretty even and entertaining fight. Demian Maia was going to take a drop as soon as he lost although losing by sudden KO is not the worst thing in the world.

You hate Sexiyama? Uh oh! I'd keep that a secret around these parts.

From bazz:
how did alessio sakara gets votes for for his running man impersonation last fight? Lombard and Palhares are both very underated.
Lombard is a definite candidate for best fighter nobody knows. Alessio Sakara may not be beating Anderson Silva any of these days but he beat the guy in front of him, Thales Leites.

From RP:
Ok so someone explain to me why is Leites ranked and Bisping isn't
People dislike Michael Bisping. People may dislike Thales Leites, but not as much as Michael Bisping.

From saerbarnet:
"Condit has had two fights and is 1-1 while the loss was in a very close split-decision. I wouldn't say he's been bad at all. As for Zaromskis, perhaps he is a bit high off his recent Grand Prix victory. But he was damn impressive in that run."

And Condit's win was a very close split decision against an opponent who isn't top 15 in the world. He has obvious holes in his game and until he fills those he isn't top 10
Carlos Condit would need to take a substantial drop to get kicked out of the top 10. He's had two close fights but he is 1-1 in said fights. Should he be punished for winning by split decision?

Thanks for another week of talk from the outskirts of 411ville.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we are not dangerous at all, I won't lie to you.

Can't argue there, the top 10 is pretty much spot on though Werdum still in the top 10 makes me a little sad for the HW division.

You put Fedor as the top when it's clear that he is afraid to fight Brock.

You guys are lame and biased and probably won't print this comment because while certain people can call each other names and make really lame "one shot deal" comments - an opinion like this gets edited.

I see Cain destroying Ben Rothwell.

Why edit your opinion when they can just post it for other people to ridicule?

You speaking from past experience? I think everybody in this forum is aware that the fight has less to do with Fedor as much as it has to do with the clowns that manage him.

antonio silva should be ranked somewhere. i can't wait for him to smash werdouche right out of the top-15.

I hope Carwin, Velasquez, and dos Santos win their fights because for Mir to be ranked at #4 shows me that the HW division is extremely weak.

NO WAY ARlovski is in top 15 and kongo aint

I'm still a bit stunned they licensed Antonio Silva again. Didn't he go to Japan to circumvent his steroid test ban?

And don't be so sure he'll KO Werdum. Everyone trashes Werdum but the guy is a beast on the ground. He'll submit Antonio Silva.

lol at least if you are going to mock arlovski with the picture you choose for him, then mock Barnett as well.

I get why you guys have Carwin and Rogers listed so high, but they really don't deserve it. They are getting over-rated just because they were handed a title shot. It makes the title match-up look better for if you can say Lesnar is fighting a top 5 HW, but come on now. I think Carwin should be much lower. I don't see what he has done to deserve that ranking. If beating Gonzaga is so impressive, then surely destroying Gonzaga twice should get you ranked high. Or perhaps destroying the man who destroyed Gonzaga twice should be higher?

This comment is directed towards the three authors who left Barnett completely out of their rankings.

I'm running off the assumption that Barnett was left of your ballots due to his positive steroid test. It is well withing your right to be upset about the issue, as was I, however to not rank him is an oversight bordering on childish.

That positive test doesn't diminish his prior accomplishments, because we can't be certain of his abuse history. Considering that he fought twice before this in high profile bouts in the states, he has passed tests lately. I'm simply suggesting that a positive test doesn't destroy his accomplishments.

Now if you disagree with me, I'll trust that you'll use the same vantage point when you're assessing other weight division. If you're going to hold Barnett at fault as if he doped for every fight, you need to hold other fighters to the same level of accountability.

I do want to be clear. I'm in no way condoning or approving or Barnetts actions. He ruined what was expected to be a great fight, and for that matter, a great fight card. I just see people being too emotional in rankings in regards to him.

A. awesome picture of mir..
B. i think the only way for Brock to be number 1 in here.. is if he stays undefeated against Carwin and fedor falls to Rogers.. (however im still iffy if ppl in here would still vote for fedor as number 1 still even if he loses).....

OR

fedor has to lose atleast once.. and then Lesnar in the future MUSt beat big nog

Funny to see brocks last five fights are ALL his fights and hes ranked 2nd.

Minotauro will submit him with an armbar

why is Lesnar #2? Its clear that he is afraid of the giant killer Minowa, thats why he never went to DREAM. He should be #3467

see,I can do it too...

I can't believe how far down you knocked Couture. I can understand the drop but some of the people you ranked ahead of him are ridiculous. Rogers?!? Really? He knocked out Arlovski but does that really put him ahead of Couture? Couture would own him up and down. The same goes for Werdum. Randy is finally slowing down but he is still a top 10 especially when the people knocking him out are a one dimensional Clubber Lang knock off and an overrated BJJ fighter who was run out of the ufc.

Fedor is just like the Klitchko brothers in boxing. On top by reputation only and fighting tomato cans to cash in on his name. It amazes me that people think that there would be any other outcome than Lesnar taking him down and beating his sleepy eyes shut. FEDOR IS SCARED OF BROCK.......FACE IT "MMA PURISTS"

God I hope Brett Rogers beats the shit out of Fedor so his overrated ass quits sitting at the top of these lists.

It seems like the 411 writers don't know of that many heavyweights, so they have to go with popular names to fill their lists. It's really sad that Brett Rogers and even Shane Carwin, both who are largely untested in the cage, are ranked higher than Jeff Monson and Josh Barnett. Monson has wins over more big names than Carwin and Rogers have even fought. And whatever happens outside the ring/cage should have no affect on Barnett's rankings. There's no way Carwin is ranked fifth and Barnett is thirteenth. That is ludicrous. Many would say he was on the roids for most of his wins. My rebuttal would be- prove it. On top of that, and lets be honest here, do you honestly believe that all the fighters in PRIDE fought clean?
Why do you think Overeem is avoiding the US like the plague?

"Why do you think Overeem is avoiding the US like the plague?"

not only because of the roid testing thats for sure. He is a successful K-1 fighter,I think he should quit MMA,and concentrate only on kickboxing

How can Arlovski still be ranked after getting destroyed in 22 seconds..if that's the case Tim Slyvia might as well be ranked

I don't think Rogers can beat Fedor, but I hope to god he loses at some point in his few fights with Strikeforce. So tired of seeing him over worshiped, but I guess at this point it's hard to argue until Brock gets more and more wins in his record. Just personally, hard for me to put Fedor up there when I don't think he could beat Brock.

Everytime I see all of these top lists though I keep thinking how many divisions are weak across all the leagues when there are not better choices than Arlovski or Barnett to put in there. Plus Overeem should not be ranked so highly until he defends his belt and fights some real fights in drug tested leagues.
