411's MMA Rankings 10.27.09: Lightweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 10.27.2009

Welcome back, it's your favorite time of the week....411mania MMA RANKINGS~! The fall is usually a busy time for the sport and that is exactly the case this month. Specifically with the lightweight division, several top fighters saw action. Shinya Aoki made history by becoming the first DREAM lightweight champion with a submission win over Joachim Hansen. Eddie Alvarez submitted DEEP's lightweight champion Katusnori Kikuno just this past weekend.

Speaking of this past weekend, how about UFC 104? Gleison Tibau showed it's difficult to avoid his takedowns while also being weak with his striking. Meanwhile, Joe Stevenson was the total package (hopefully the only time I will conjure up Lex Luger) in his win over Spencer Fisher. Stevenson may have trouble getting back near the top of the UFC's lightweight division, but he is taking names and thrashing without discrimination.

Meanwhile, over in WEC, the lightweight title picture had a wrench thrown in by Mr. Ben Henderson. For the majority of 2009, all the talk about that division was about Jamie Varner and Cowboy Donald Cerrone. No longer. In a fight of the year candidate nearly three weeks ago, Henderson outworked Cerrone to become the interim champion. It's expected the title unification bout between Varner and Henderson will take place before the end of 2009. What does this mean for the rankings? Well, needless to say Cerrone is wiped clean off the slate, receiving zero votes. I promise you one more surprise is in store relating to WEC.

There may only be eight weeks left in 2009, but that does not mean the fighting is easing to a slow. On the contrary, eight of this month's top fifteen lightweight fighters are officially, or expected to, fight in the coming weeks. Confirmed fights include B.J. Penn vs. Diego Sanchez, Takanori Gomi vs. Tony Hervey, Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida and Frank Edgar vs. Kurt Pellegrino.

ACTION~!

FEEDBACK to Last Week's Heavyweight Rankings
From Brad:
Can't argue there, the top 10 is pretty much spot on though Werdum still in the top 10 makes me a little sad for the HW division.
What's the issue with Werdum? Has wins over Gonzaga and Vera and his only recent loss was a KO.

From Jak:
I see Cain destroying Ben Rothwell.
You saw correctly.

From dale:
antonio silva should be ranked somewhere. i can't wait for him to smash werdouche right out of the top-15.
Antonio Silva, over the past year, has wins over Yoshihiro Nakao and Jim York after failing a drug test in the United States. Who should fall off the list so he can be ranked? A win over Werdum would certainly put him in play again though.

From reality check:
lol at least if you are going to mock arlovski with the picture you choose for him, then mock Barnett as well.

I get why you guys have Carwin and Rogers listed so high, but they really don't deserve it. They are getting over-rated just because they were handed a title shot. It makes the title match-up look better for if you can say Lesnar is fighting a top 5 HW, but come on now. I think Carwin should be much lower. I don't see what he has done to deserve that ranking. If beating Gonzaga is so impressive, then surely destroying Gonzaga twice should get you ranked high. Or perhaps destroying the man who destroyed Gonzaga twice should be higher?
Perhaps there is something to that...ranking a man higher because he is in a championship fight. But if Carwin should not be #5, who should be higher than him? Rogers may not be a realistic top-ten fighter but both he and Carwin are undefeated.

From MKick:
his comment is directed towards the three authors who left Barnett completely out of their rankings.

I'm running off the assumption that Barnett was left of your ballots due to his positive steroid test. It is well withing your right to be upset about the issue, as was I, however to not rank him is an oversight bordering on childish.

That positive test doesn't diminish his prior accomplishments, because we can't be certain of his abuse history. Considering that he fought twice before this in high profile bouts in the states, he has passed tests lately. I'm simply suggesting that a positive test doesn't destroy his accomplishments.

Now if you disagree with me, I'll trust that you'll use the same vantage point when you're assessing other weight division. If you're going to hold Barnett at fault as if he doped for every fight, you need to hold other fighters to the same level of accountability.

I do want to be clear. I'm in no way condoning or approving or Barnetts actions. He ruined what was expected to be a great fight, and for that matter, a great fight card. I just see people being too emotional in rankings in regards to him.
I can only speak for myself as I was one of the three who chose not to rank Barnett. Combined with the fact that he has had just one fight in the past year, has failed a steroid test and his current inactivity, I felt fine dropping him from my top fifteen fighters. Once Barnett signs with a fight promotion and is scheduled to fight again, I will contemplate adding him back.

From wylun:
A. awesome picture of mir..
B. i think the only way for Brock to be number 1 in here.. is if he stays undefeated against Carwin and fedor falls to Rogers.. (however im still iffy if ppl in here would still vote for fedor as number 1 still even if he loses).....

OR

fedor has to lose atleast once.. and then Lesnar in the future MUSt beat big nog
You raise an interesting point. Is there any way Brock can be ranked #1 even if Fedor does not lose on November 7th? It will certainly be an interesting time next month to find out.

From Conk:
Barnett dros from #2 to #13 without losing a fight. Serves him right I guess
It's been a casual drop (he was #9 last month) but yes, he's in a free fall right now. It is a combination of inactivity, and the drug test failure.

From SoulBrotherNo1:
why is Lesnar #2? Its clear that he is afraid of the giant killer Minowa, thats why he never went to DREAM. He should be #3467

see,I can do it too...
I see what you did...

Hardly a fair comparison however. Brock Lesnar is the UFC champion. Fedor is the king of all non-UFC heavyweight action. He had a chance to come to the UFC and get an immediate shot at Brock, but for a multitude of reasons, chose to go elsewhere.

However, Minowa is awesome~!

From stronelis:
I can't believe how far down you knocked Couture. I can understand the drop but some of the people you ranked ahead of him are ridiculous. Rogers?!? Really? He knocked out Arlovski but does that really put him ahead of Couture? Couture would own him up and down. The same goes for Werdum. Randy is finally slowing down but he is still a top 10 especially when the people knocking him out are a one dimensional Clubber Lang knock off and an overrated BJJ fighter who was run out of the ufc.
huh? Rodrigo Nogueira was run out of the UFC? There was a lot of debate among the writers about Couture. First, whether to continue ranking him as a heavyweight and then where. Simply put, many feel he could not compete with the likes of Carwin, dos Santos, Velasquez, etc. in the UFC (big surprise). Several people have Couture as a big underdog heading into UFC 105, too.

From Shane:
Barnett's listed?? Really??
Really.

From kingave66:
Fedor is just like the Klitchko brothers in boxing. On top by reputation only and fighting tomato cans to cash in on his name. It amazes me that people think that there would be any other outcome than Lesnar taking him down and beating his sleepy eyes shut. FEDOR IS SCARED OF BROCK.......FACE IT "MMA PURISTS"
You can't have it both ways. Fedor fighting tomato cans? Then what do you call Tim Sylvia in July 2008, Andrei Arlovski in January 2009 and before he couldn't pass a steroid test, Josh Barnett? Hardly tomato cans.

From Butters4Prez:
God I hope Brett Rogers beats the shit out of Fedor so his overrated ass quits sitting at the top of these lists.
Overrated? He beats whomever is booked against him.

From RP:
How can Arlovski still be ranked after getting destroyed in 22 seconds..if that's the case Tim Slyvia might as well be ranked
Simply put, Sylvia is not ranked because he was knocked out by Ray Mercer. Arlovski is still ranked because he is still a threat in the division. His weakness being his chin at this stage, if he can ever take a punch again, he will imrpove.

From Jeremy S:
I don't think Rogers can beat Fedor, but I hope to god he loses at some point in his few fights with Strikeforce. So tired of seeing him over worshiped, but I guess at this point it's hard to argue until Brock gets more and more wins in his record. Just personally, hard for me to put Fedor up there when I don't think he could beat Brock.

Everytime I see all of these top lists though I keep thinking how many divisions are weak across all the leagues when there are not better choices than Arlovski or Barnett to put in there. Plus Overeem should not be ranked so highly until he defends his belt and fights some real fights in drug tested leagues.
What are these fake fights Overeem is participating in? Whether you think Brock can beat Fedor, it's tough to argue who is the better fighter. Fedor has years upon years of evidence while Brock has four fights.

Thanks for all the great comments, feedback and everything in between.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- A fighter must fight at least once within the past calendar year to be ranked. The rule applies to weight classes as well so fighters must stay active inside their native weight class. However, if a fighter has a fight scheduled, they are eligible to be ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you feel like complaining about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking. Remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter and everyone will point and laugh.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. If you wish to jump on the bandwagon and throw your hate on top of the pile, be my guest. Just have faith that there will be no backlash, we're writers not fighters. Besides, this is not North Korea. At least, that's what I heard Csonka shout at Ash behind closed doors one time.

* denotes a statistical tie.

* Josh Thomson remains ineligible because it has been over a year (9/20/2008) since he last fought and he is not scheduled for a fight as of this week.

- vs. Nate Diaz - UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs. Maynard - January 11, 2010

Comment: Maynard has to be on the cusp of receiving a championship match and a win over Nate Diaz may push him over the top. If not, what does this guy have to do to get the golden opportunity?

11) Sean Sherk (33-4-1)

Height: 5'6

You guys must love the BCS. It's the only thing I know of that compares to your continued support Edgar being ranked about Maynard.

I think what would probably help Gray is if he actually finished a fight. He has not finished a fight in quite a long time. Like Kenny said, I wanna see fight finished at 155.

there is NO WAY Joe Stevenson or Sean Sherk should be ranked higher than Clay Guida...so why isn't guida on this list??

Solomon - In response to your response on my comment last week.

I was not stating that nogueira was run out i was referring to Werdum. You seemed to have missed my point. I was not arguing anyones placement ahead of couture other than Rogers and Werdum. As i said in the comment I understand the drop for Randy I just strongly disagree that he has fallen below Rogers and Werdum as I feel he would own either one of them.

Why should Guida be ranked above Sherk or Stevenson?
Stevenson's last three loses have been against Penn, Florian and Sanchez and he's on a two fight win streak.
Sherk's also won his last fight and he's beaten two men on this list while Guida hasn't.
