MMA's 3R’s 11.05.09: Quinton Crybaby Jackson, Greg and Verne Gagne Inventing The UFC, WEC Hype, More
Posted by Larry Csonka on 11.05.2009

* The Column Concept *
For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of the column, here it is. The column will look at events and or happenings in the world of MMA. They will be broken down into the three categories, the Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right will be the good and great fights or positive news items of the week. Perhaps even big fight announcements. The wRong will be bad fights, bad booking decisions and the like. Finally, the Ridiculous are the things that were just the worst of the world of MMA. They get grouped in their categories, and for a show, they will get a score from 1-10, based on the 411 ratings scale.

* And now, the 3R's of…MMA*

  • THE RIGHT:

    Business Is Picking Up For The WEC: I don't know about you guys, but the one company I am more excited about these days more than any other is the WEC. I mean, how can you not? Varner vs. Henderson and Faber vs. Assuncao have been signed for WEC 46. If this was a PPV, they would have my buys already. Jens Pulver is coming back for one more run at glory, and that makes me happy as a fight fan. Takeya Mizugaki vs. Scott Jorgensen is set for WEC 45 and Brown vs. Aldo is under two weeks away. They have bolstered the ranks by signing Brad Pickett, Tyler Toner, Brandon Visher, Chad Mendes and Chris Horodecki in the last WEEK! Right now the WEC is on a roll with quality shows, and now they are strengthening the roster, and the future is very bright. Now if Zuffa would just promote the product as they should and get these boys some more pay and shit would be grand.

    STRIKEFORCE Signs A DREAM: Over the weekend Strikeforce made an awesome announcement, one that made me personally very happy. They announced that they had signed DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix Champion Marius "Whitemare'' Zaromskis (13-3) of Lithuania to a multi-fight deal. Zaromskis is coming off an utter destruction of Myeon Ho Bae, winning by 0:19, first-round KO on Oct 25. The victory earned Zaromskis the 2009 DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix crown. This was the third consecutive time Zaromskis won a fight with a head kick in the opening round. On July 20, 2009, he defeated both Jason High (2:22) and heavily favored Hayoto Sakurai (4:03) with head kicks to win DREAM's 170-pound tournament. The guy has been VERY impressive and has been on the rise among the Welterweight ranks due to the wake of devastation described above. When we get signings like this, I approve of the DREAM/Strikeforce relationship more and more.

  • THE wRong:

    Did You Know That Verne And Greg Gagne Invented The UFC And MMA?: I bet you had no clue there, did you. But honestly, these are the best kinds of stories. When something is invented and takes off, or just something takes off in general, there are always loonies the come from the woodwork to try and claim that they were the ones that did it, and hell, if they can get some cash, they'll take it. The story is simple. While doing a recent shoot interview, Greg Gagne, the son of Verne Gagne (the legend of the AWA), claimed that he and his father INVENTED the UFC. Yeah. Greg claims that his father and himself had the original idea for "MMA", and then took that pitch to the US Wrestling Conference in 1992. At this conference, Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell were in attendance, liked what they heard, took it to Dana White, and the UFC was born. Well, Couture didn't even compete in the UFC until 1997, and in 1992 he was the Division-I runner up at 190 pounds, second to Mark Kerr. Liddell didn't come to the UFC until 1998, and during 1992, was likely kickboxing somewhere and not hanging out with Couture. And of course, the final nail in the coffin of this tale of bullshit was of course, Dana White did NOT start the UFC. Man, even after being out of the business, wrestlers LOVE to work the Carny angles, don't they? And there is your MMA bullshit tale of the week.

  • THE Ridiculous:

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHMPAGE Jackson: Now for those that may not follow my writing, I just want to clarify my stance. I like Rampage Jackson. I like him as a fighter, I was happy when he came to the UFC, and I think he has been a great addition to the roster of fighters. As a character, the man is beyond entertaining. Generally a person saying TITTIES 562 times in 60-minutes would annoy the hell out of me, but I think that he made it work. He has charisma, he has star power, and I appreciate that. Basically, when I write about this, I am his fan, not a random hater. Rampage Jackson has turned into a crybaby. It seems every time that he looks bas on the Ultimate Fighter or the wind blows the wring way that he launches into some tirade on his blog. Obviously that is his right. He can publish what ever he wants, but with each passing blog, RAMPAGE has turned into WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHMPAGE. Let's look at some excerpts from the latest blog.

    "I was watching the fight this weekend with the director of the A Team movie, the movie crew & a couple of actors & I never been ashamed to be a part of MMA till now… The UFC looked like assholes this weekend. The main event was boring. I anticipated that because let's be real. Machida is a boring fighter. But Shogun getting robbed like that was pretty cut throat. Then you hear Joe Rogan say you "you have to beat the champ to be a champ." & that made me think the UFC are full of shit! Not to be whiny here but I still don't feel like I've been beat in the UFC. but I'm not champ anymore. If the UFC gives Shogun an immediate rematch because of the controversial loss then that would validate everything I have said about the UFC in my recent posts & why I'm pissed at the UFC. But yet he deserves one & so have I deserved one against Forrest."

    The first thing that hits me is that he is over dramatizing the entire situation. Just because he didn't think the fight was exciting and that in his opinion that the wrong guy won, the company looked bad and he is now ASHAMED to be a fighter. Really Rampage, really? Now let me say, the fight wasn't all that exciting and sure, I felt that Rua clearly won (in my opinion), but when it was over, it was a bad decision to me, and nothing more. I didn't see the shame, I don't think the company looked bad, I felt Cecil and the other judges did. And then, then he really has the balls to say that the company looked like assholes. What a classy thing to say, considering that when you went on your "energy drink" binge, those ASSHOLES had your back and did everything to help you out. WAAAAAAAAAAH! I AM NOT GETTING MY WAY…WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

    "The UFC needs to get some new judges before I even think about coming back.

    Hey big guy, you should really understand that the state athletic commission selects the judges and officials for the bouts. And I thought you were done with the fight game? Of wait, you're just retiring because you decided to show that you don't value commitment. Gotcha. And for the record I have no issues with him doing the movie and trying to make some cash, but what he did to the company was pretty shitty,

    "I want the hardcore fans to go back & watch all the fights that you thought was kinda shady with the judges in the UFC & TUF & write down the names of the judges so you guys can complain & have a voice. Do your homework. This sport wouldn't be what it is without the fans. Its hard for me to believe that the UFC is so successful & has over 100 shows & can't tell who wins a fight. How is it that they can't tell who wins a fight on an important title fight? "

    Now this isn't that bad a thing to tell people. To ask people to go and watch shows in order to educate themselves in regards to the sport is a good thing. And he is also right that the sport is nothing without the fans. BUT, but you see, he loses his point when he brings up the UFC has had over 10 shows and "can't tell who wins a fight". Once again Rampage, that the state athletic commission selects the judges and officials for the bouts, so stop trying to blame the UFC dude. Once again, he simply comes off as bitter here, while also pathetically trying to stay relevant in the world of the UFC, so when he comes back, and he WILL come back, he can make big money.

    "Me doing TUF 10 & seeing how they edited it now & seeing how Wes Shivers lost his fight is making me very skeptical about the UFC. Note to TUF: Anybody involved in making the TUF show do me a big favor... Don't look at me cause you're fake. Don't talk to me cause you're fake. Don't even think about me cause you're fake. & if you do you might just get cussed the fuck out. "

    And once again he goes to the edit card ad CRIES because lately he is nothing but WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHMPAGE Jackson. Now, I will agree that the Shivers fight could have gone to a third round, but once again, Dana, Lorenzo and Joe, Mike Goldberg, Joe Rogan nor anyone else employed by the UFC are judging these fights. Take your complaints up with the Nevada State Athletic Commission Rampage, they are the ones you need to complain about. I think what it comes down to is this, I like Rampage, but lately, he is just a big old crybaby. But I better be careful, he may cuss me out.

    I know UFC doesn't technically choose judges and referees, but doesn't it seem a little suspicious that Big John got shut out of UFC 104 and can't get licensing in Vegas? Clearly these guys have some stroke within the commissions and the judging has been affected by it. And this is from someone who didn't disagree with the Machida decision.

    Good analysis of Rampage; I agree. I love the guy but the whining is ridiculous. And some of the stuff he whines about is even *more* ridiculous. "I didn't want to do the show", well then why did you? "I'm not a coach", well then why did you do the show? "Everyone is fake", it's a TV show, the perception is in the eye of the viewer.

    Finish your movie, come back and beat Rashad's ass like I think you will, HOPE you will.

    Big John "retired" and his position was filled. He reapplied, but they are full but have his application on file.

    That is what has been reported by Big John himself.

    Big John McCarthy is retiring as a UFC Referee for an opportunity to become an on-air personality and adviser with Toronto-based The Fight Network.

    HOW DID THAT WORK OUT FOR YA JOHN ;\

    The really ANNOYING whining, bitching and moaning is all of the whining, bitching and moaning about Rampage's blog posts.

    The Gange Story should be in the ridiculous section. That's one funny story. I laughed my ass off.
