411 MMA Rankings 11.24.09: Welterweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 11.24.2009

Welcome to the 411mania MMA Rankings and this week we shine the spotlight on the best welterweights in the world. We now know the man to challenge Georges St. Pierre next will be Dan Hardy. Canada fighting back at Britain? You betcha! The fight to take place in 2010 poses interesting questions. Hardy won't be as big an underdog as Matt Serra was, but he does have a punchers chance. He may have some jiu-jitsu skills but Hardy is nowhere near the skilled ground fighter that Serra was. What does that spell? Another destruction courtesy of the hands of Georges St. Pierre.

Elsewhere in the division, the momentum train behind Anthony Johnson came to a screeching halt over the weekend thanks to Josh Koscheck. Koscheck brought his wrestling back into the equation and when he mixes his dominant wrestling and solid striking together, he is tough to stop. The question now is, can he leap over Thiago Alves into the top three?

Karo Parisyan clocked in at #15 the last time we calculated the welterweight rankings (in September, I believe). SInce then, he pulled out of his scheduled UFC 106 bout with Dustin Hazelett and apparently has serious issues in his personal life. It does not look like he will be fighting in the UFC again anytime soon. His drop in the rankings may make room for a fresh name. Who is it? Can Matt Serra return? How about Mike PIerce or even Ben Saunders?

To the feedback from last week's MIDDLEWEIGHT RANKINGS

From Scottyieoittie:
Great ranking's. But I gotta debate I still think if Lutter would of came into better shape when he had Silva mounted he could of tko'ed him easily.
We'll never know, but it's possible. I doubt Lutter could have TKO'd him to win so easily but if his weight cut went smooth and he had power/endurance, perhaps he does put Silva away. Too bad he messed up. Thanks for the compliment.

From wylun:
lol okami lost to okami lol, its all good!!!!
Yeah, thanks for noticing. That damn Okami best not beat himself next time, that's for sure.

From saebarnet:
Jake Shields? Really? He's beaten Robbie Lawler who's biggest weakness is submissions (He's lost 3/5 by sub) and Mayhem Miller who's last relevant win was against Lawler in 2006 (And it was by sub ofc) and Miller is nowhere close to a top 15 fighter.
Why do you hate Mayhem? Shields if that high because he wins fights. His last four fights (within 16 months) have each been against VERY GOOD competition and the only time he was in danger was the brief moments Miller had him in the choke at the end of round 3. Other than that, Shields dominated Nick Thompson, Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler and Jason Miller. I'd say that's cause for his placement.

From Ramsey:
Shields has been on a roll AND just became MW champ...and why would he NOT be in the top 5? Shields hate is as biased as Brock hate.

Love the pic of Silva...just has the look of "c'mon bitch, punch me, I will destroy you".
I wouldn't say the hate towards Shields is the same as that toward Brock, but he does get a lot of hate for his style. As for the Silva pic, I share your feelings. Silva studies his opponent's reach and knows how far they can throw without hitting him in the face. The man is legend.

From MJH:
I was going to bash Shields in the top 5 as well as I thought he looked weak against Mayhem and I hate how he always calls out Frank Shamrock which is not something a top 5 guy should do. But then I realized his two wins before Miller were against Lawler and Daley, who looked awesome in his UFC debut. I missed the Daley fight, did Shields dominate?

Is Shields a better fighter than Sonnen? I think Sonnen would dominate him with strength and better wrestling personally.
Shields dominated Daley so much as he took him down and submitted him. Shields' weakness is his stand-up, it's no surprise. A fight between Shields and Sonnen would be a great wrestling war and I'd probably agree Chael would be the favorite in such a fight.

From a Tomasz Drwal fan:
Mamed at 14? Santiago at 13? So Mamed kills Santiago in just a minute, and is undefeated in his last 18 fights and yet Santiago is ranked higher? Are you out of your mind??? And having Shields confirms the fact that yes you people are indeed out of your minds!!!! I looked at the specific rankings just now and this is aimed at Kadi,Kuczkowski,Harris. Those 3 apperantly know nothing about the sport of mma and should be removed from the panel if 411 wants any mma credibility.
We get this a lot when such an upset occurs. Khalidov was never ranked prior to this win. Jorge Santiago was a top ten fighter. So Santiago dropped and Khalidov was finally ranked. It just so happens that Khalidov was not higher than Santiago. Thanks for the support.

From AdamS:
Poor Marquardt. He is getting screwed in the whole Hendo deal. Best bet for him now is probably a #1 contender's match with Akiyama, who is the only guy I can see getting into that match just yet sicne he has wisn voer two guys currently in the division (Belcher, and the older one against Kang)
How does Hendo not signing hurt Marquardt. Either way, he fights a good wrestler (Sonnen instead of Henderson) and is one step away from a title shot. Now only if Anderson Silva agrees to fight Nate should both win their next fights.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and include your own set of rankings if you would!

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we can spread out and run away so you wouldn't even be able to catch us all anyhow.

Really?... Paulo Thiago, below Swick & Kampman... Come On, give the guy a litle more love! + How Awesome is Josh Koscheck's recent, "Auto Self promoted title Push"...?

Paulo>>Swick and Kampmann

I would have Dan switch with Kos just for their recent records

5-0 and 3-2 respectively

personally i think everyone in the top 15 below dan hardy is better than him. Wins over swick and davis in 2 close decisions (1 of which i believe he lost) shouldnt get you ranked.

I'm a fan of both Zaromskis and Daley but they are both ranked to high. Glad Hornbuckle is finally getting noticed but why is Kadi voting for Serra? The mans fought something like twice in 3 and half years hasn't he.

ya u CAn say that. but you have to also look at the competition... i think KOSH has had wayy higher level of competition than Dan Hardy has... i think its going to be another Thiago Alves situation.. where dan hardy beats alot of ppl.. and looks undefeatable.. and gets murdered by GSP... but the difference is.. Alves actually went thru TOP LEVEL competition.. dan hardy has not yet.. and he is given the title shot... the HIGHEST level i'd say he has faced is swick..

And no Anderson Silva either, I wonder why.

Can we please drop Matt Hughes off the list due to his unwillingness to fight anyone remotely relevant? I think even *I* am too relevant in the division for him to fight me.

What?! No Killa B? Ben Saunders made a statement when he destroyed Marcus Davis!

I kid, I kid.

Great list. Looks like nothing has really changed. Wish Kampmann was a little higher, but he'll rebound

I think Anthony Johnson's drop completely out was a tad muc, though not unusual I guess.
Not sure I buy Koschek over Hardy simply due to the level of fighters Hardy's beaten. Sure, Koschek's beaten fighters, but Hardy's beaten contenders.

John Hathaway should be close, at least mentioned.

Hardy and Zamouriskas are too high as well. Kampannn should be above Condit and Thiago should be higher than both.

And Hornbuckles win over The goat isn't that impressive when you consider Nick lost to Kennedy the fight before.

Jonathan Solomon

I called you out last time during the 170 rankings saying you had a hard on for Kos or something to the effect as you ranked him above Alves. You made a good response as to why you felt Kos should be above Alves (if I recall corretly I think your point was that Alves came in over weight when the two of them fought and I believe you had another point that I cannot remember). Whatever the points were (I am too lazy to go back and try to find them), there were valid and supported your ranking choice.

My question is what changed that would make you put Alves higher in the rankings this time than Kos? Kos has had two wins since his fight with Alves yet Alves hasn't fought anyone. I would think if anything, two wins for Kos would strengthen his ranking at welterweight.

Could you explain? Did you and Kos have a “falling out”? : )

Not having Rumble in the ranks is wrong. So he lost to Koscheck. Big deal. That fight needs to be redone IMO

It's good to see you guys include fighters that aren't part of UFC or Strikeforce, but I'm surprised Zaromskis is ranked so high for beating fighters that wouldn't make a top 20 list.

How can Zaromskis be ranked that much higher than Jay Hieron? They have pretty much the same credentials (except that Hieron didn't almost lose to Ross Pointon and actually lose to Che Mills).

And wasn't Nick Diaz last 2 fights at MW? Which would make it 1,5 years since he last fought at WW?

North America will implode as the entire continent simultaneously eats it's own head if Dan Hardy so much as drops GSP.

Aside from the fact his fights have gone the distance, why isn't Hardy as good as Koscheck again? Okay, Hardy tends to go to the judges, but he's beaten everyone the UFC has asked him to beat, including the fancied Mike Swick. Of course he hasn't beaten GSP or Alves or Fitch, but you DO realize he hasn't had a chance to fight them right? Instead of writing off a guy that hasn't lost recently and has beaten what's been put in front of him, why not give him the benefit ahead of a guy that's already lost a bunch of times in the UFC to both names and nobodies. Paulo Thiago?!

And who has Kos beaten that's better than Hardy's opponents? Lytle? Trigg? Yoshida?! Top level names, REALLY?! Hazelett is one dimensional and not top level, and Rumble was overrated just because he was big and exciting.

Hardy's wins are bigger than Kos's according to the rankings, but hey, because Kos has fought and lost to bigger names than Hardy's had the chance to, he's ranked higher.

Yeah, okay, that's fair.

Overall, these are really good rankings. Swick dropping to 8 and Fitch staying solid at second is very appropriate for them both. But there are 2 that I dont understand.

I dont personally agree with Kos being above Hardy. Kos has fought some better names, sure. But he seems to have a win win lose win win lose kind of record. 2 of his last 3 losses were his last 5 fights. After Brock and Shogun, I'm beginning to hate the 1-2 fight win streaks that earn a title shot.

And my second point of contention, why is Nick Diaz so low on the list? I know he hasnt had a fight in a while, and we dont know when he will in the forseeable future, but rampage is "retired" and he's still making the top 10.

Zaromskis at 6? He's never even fought against a top 15 welterweight. Being the champ in Dream doesn't mean much.

so matt hughes is ranked 12? your respect from me has been taken away officially. matt hughes is the most unathletic 170 lb fights to ever hold the belt, and he's undeniably over rated... good luck making his ranking a fact
