411 MMA Rankings 02.02.10: Pound for Pound
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 02.02.2010
Who is the best pound for pound fighter in the world? Is Georges St. Pierre the best UFC fighter or is Anderson Silva still the most dominant force in the sport? Can Urijah Faber return after his latest victory and how about Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson? Find out all the details in the newest 411 MMA Rankings.
Welcome to the first pound for pound rankings of the new year. Are you ready for a bad joke? It must be Groundhog's Day because the top of the list still consists of names like Silva, Penn, Machida, St. Pierre, Emelianenko and Aldo. There's no beaver on the loose at 411 Headquarters, no matter what Dustin James tries to tell you.
In nothing short of amazing, nine of the top ten fighters this week are scheduled to fight between now and May. That means, nine of the best fighters in the sport will be in action in mere weeks. Hell yeah~! That means by Memorial Day, the P4P list may be more shook up than Wes Sims's belly.
Before we get to business, I will say that there was movement towards the bottom of the list but that is routine for these rankings. There are so many worthy fighters but only fifteen can make the cut. So we get these instance's where a champion (Shields) or someone on a momentous streak (Lil Nog) are left in the cold. But don't worry because if both Shields and Rogerio Nogueira can win their upcoming fights, there is no doubt they will return to these rankings. Shields takes on Dan Henderson in April on network television while Nogueira will fight Forrest Griffin at UFC 113 in May.
Here's some feedback to last week's lightweight rankings.
From Malte:
I think that Ben Henderson as 14th is a little bit low but otherwise a good list. Perhaps a bit low with fighters like Sherk and JZ (the names) still leveling out in the middle of the rankings.
From E-Van:
Eddie Alvarez has the nicest eye brows in mma. Fact. If you say so.
From Melendez's Fan:
How are both Florian (who got MURDERED by BJ) and Alvarez BOTH Ahead of SF LHW Champ El Nino who also have an amazing track record and got the gold in what many considered the "MOTY" in 2009 ?
IMO Melendez is a better all around performer than Aoki and would absolutely murder him on standing battle (and he is not bad on the ground either since he is training with some BJJ Wizards (The Diaz Bros and Shields).
Oh and unlike Aoki he did not got KTFO Three straight times IMO The knock against Melendez is lack of top tier competition in recent years. He beat Kawajiri in 2006 and Guida in 2006. His most recent big wins include Ishida and Thomson in 2009. Florian, being ahead of Nino, may be unwarranted but his lone loss recently is against Penn. Florian had big wins against Stevenson, Huerta and Guida. As far as Aoki, he has a long line of big wins over big lightweights. His lone loss recently came at welterweight.
From 5150 proof:
i would have to agree 14th is harsh especially the cerrone fight was moty last year impressive kid for sure maybe next rankings will treat this bright star better I'd agree with you and would guess Henderson will rise in the rankings this year.
From Zab Juuuuudah:
Its safe to say Guida needs to win his next fight. Good thing for him Sherk got injured cause im certain that would of been another loss for him. I wouldn't count Frankie Edgar out of the Penn fight as he's a great all rounder with, in my opinion superior speed to Penn. Finally what on earth can the match makers do with Gray Maynard? Tyson Griffin possibly but as a big Griffin fan i'd hate to see him lose a boring uninspiring decision that may ruin his chances of ever getting a title shot. Guida needs a win but he won't be in danger of getting the UFC axe. Edgar may be a bit faster but Penn is do dominant at 155, it's tough to see him in any real danger right now. I'd love to see Maynard against a good ground fighter with solid striking skills (Florian?). Something has to give the guy that fire to grow as a fighter (even though Maynard is undefeated).
From Jared B.:
Maynard above Edgar and Henderson so low are a little debatable. As much as people will talk about Maynard's win over Edgar two years ago in the time since Maynard has eked out split (and outright bad) decisions while Edgar has beat top competition and looks for a finish against opponents. While Edgar may "look for a finish," prior to his submission win over Matt Veach, his last four fights ended by decision. However, Edgar's striking has improved a LOT over the course of that time. Maynard's striking is still suspect.
From wolvie316:
with the exception of Penn, Diego Sanchez can whip everybody else on this list. On any given day, I'm sure he could. But he would have trouble against guys with good wrestling (Melendez), ground skills (Aoki) and even the good strikers (Hansen).
From Tony:
Look at Maynard's face in that picture. He did not win that fight. Rounds 1 & 3 to Diaz. Edgar should of got the title shot but he will get destroyed. Maynard may not have had the cleanest face after the fight but the judges gave him the fight. As always, if fights don't go the distance, a lot of controversy can be avoided.
From GeeSpotter:
With the influx of awesome lightweights, I agree that it would SEEM like Henderson is a bit low. However, where there's so many good guys out there, on a list where Cerrone gets snubbed, you know there's a problem. I'm not a huge numbers guy because I believe win/loss records don't mean as much as they perceive sometimes (ie Randy Couture, Matt Brown, etc). However, I don't see what Joachim Hansen is still doing up so high.
Props to Jonathan for having the stones to rank Aoki ahead of Penn. You're gonna take a lot of heat for that Well, Hansen may be up a bit too high. His only recent BIG win came against Aoki two years ago. He has big wins earlier than that but that was some time ago. I wouldn't mind seeing JZ take a drop, especially if he remains as inactive as he has been.
From RP:
no way Florian should be ranked 3rd! sure he looked impressive against Guida but Melendez looked way better against Thompson.... and why is Ben Henderson ranked 14???? behind Sean Sherk and Gray Maynard of all people...he needs to be higher I agree that Melendez is ranked lower than he should be. Henderson should be above Maynard? I'm torn on that one.
From Jamie:
I don't think henderson should be reanked. I think that if he, Varner or Cerrone were to come to the UFC, they would get handled by "unranked" guys like Guida, Diaz, Stephenson, etc. I actually wonder how all the guys from Dream would fare against Maynard, Sherk and Edgar. The WEC is a "triple A" promotion at 155, and being champ there is not on par with being competitive in the UFC or even Dream. How is WEC a minor league promotion? Henderson's wrestling is up there, his striking is solid, what's the problem? Cerrone's striking is his strength and he is a very good jiu-jitsu fighter. The fact they are not fighting in the UFC doesn't mean they aren't as talented as those fighters. Can they compete with Penn? Probably not, but who's to say Henderson cannot compete with the likes of Florian and Maynard?
From Jon:
"Tito Ortiz over Keith Jardine. Really?"
Hell yeah! Keith Jardine is the perfect reputable can to feed Tito after he's beaten Liddell (who nobody in the world thinks should even fight again).
Tito wouldn't lose to pants fighters like Stephan Bonner or Houston Alexander, guys Jardine routinely loses to. In fact, if Jardine wins another UFC fight in his career, I'd be absolutely amazed. Tito genuinely should beat Liddell, but I guess if he loses, I concede, you have a point. If he doesn't, can we PLEASE remove Jardine from all the rankings given his awful recent track record? Tito has not even won a fight in recent memory. Why should he be a top-15 ranked fighter? I don't understand your push there.
Thank you for the comments, they are always much appreciated.

411's MMA Ranking Rules
- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.
- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

no offense to Rodrigo but he's no Top 15 pound for pound fighter..why is he ranked over Faber or even Shields

I like this, I really do. Quality list guys!

Good list guys. Props for putting Bowles over Torres, which some P4P lists don't do...and I don't even begin to understand when they put someone that just LOST above someone that beat them. I would maybe put Aoki as an honorable mention on my own list, but other than that, pretty accurate.
Harris, your ranking of Fedor as fifth is still eye-rollingly(is that a word?) lame. C'mon, Penn LOST last year, no matter how dominant he's looked since then. Aldo has been a machine, granted, but do you really think beating Mike Brown puts him above Fedor?

Heres the thing
Yeah everybody knows how great of a walterweight that gsp is but can you really say pound for pound as he only will fight as ww
Shogun should be moved down
Rashad Should definately move up Easily Top Ten

damn straight bjs at 4 again..
ya aldo might have been a machine, but bj resume is wayy more impressive than aldos.. u can honestly name every single person who bj has fought.. can u name more than 5 for aldo off the top of ur head?
BJ has fought the best of the best all of his life, u can be 16-1 but he could have fought 10-15 tomato cans tat no one have or will ever hear of

I guess the fuss over Shields last p4p ranking has hindered him from being ranked even though he really should be. Aoki should really be mentioned as well, given that he's widely regarded as the number 2 lightweight and is coming off a dominant win.

And where´s MINOWAMAN??
Posted By: Uchu (Guest) on February 02, 2010 at 08:06 AM
I understand why people leave Shields off their p4p list but he has had a great run. How many other guys can jump up a division and not only compete but win a major title? I do not believe that every guy on this list could do that even if they were jumping up a division in Strikeforce or Dream. The current champions in UFC make it a little more difficult to accomplish this feat.

I disagree with Anderson Silva at number 1....I dont think he would beat Fedor in a catch weight fight and personally i think GSP would give him a run.....Maybe even Rampage...I know forrest beat rampage but i think rampage could beat Silva....I think Shogun would also beat or give Anderson a run for his money....

Fedor should be 3 because out of his last 5 fights only three were legit heavyweights. Matt Lindland has no business fighting at HW and Hong Man Choi is a freakshow with gigantism.
That is why I think the top 3 are spot on.

As is the norm lately, Mousasi is ranked far too high when he shouldn't even be ranked in pound for pound.
Although, he did beat the worldbeater, Gary Goodridge. So he's got that going for him.

Why the Mousasi hate? I don't see any reason for him not to be ranked in the top fifteen. I probably wouldn't put him ahead of Torres or Brown or Bowells, but I would put him ahead of guys like Rampage and Big Nog.

I'm just commenting because I like that every post gets a reply on the next rankings post

sorry guys, but you've all become victims of the UFC hype machine. there is absolutely NO WAY IN THE WORLD that fedor is not the best p4p fighter in the world. should be undefeated but for a dud call, and i can't remember the last time he even looked like losing. recent fights against rogers, arlovski and sylvia were against top fighters, and the arlovski and sylvia fights were 'murderisations' of 2 former ufc world champs.
whilst anderson silva is comparable in his record, the quality of opposition he has beaten over the last 4 years, with the exception of henderson and franklin, are not comparable to those whom fedor has beaten.
and gsp? matt serra says anyone who rates gsp as the best p4p fighter in the world is an idiot.
