411 MMA Rankings 02.09.10: Middleweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 02.09.2010
411mania ranks the middleweights and if this were based on trash talk, Chael Sonnen would be the obvious #1 fighter. Meanwhile, Robbie Lawler and Demian Maia are back after their wins while Nate Marquardt hit a brick in the road. Plus, check where Vitor Belfort and Dan Henderson rank as we are weeks away from their title challenges. All that and more from the 411 MMA Rankings.
Welcome back to the show that never calls it a career. Right now, the talk of the division revolves around a Team Quest man (making Dustin James proud). Chael Sonnen took Nate Marquardt to the woodshed courtesy of his wrestling and if it were not for a big cut and a near fight finishing chokehold, I would say it was a dominant performance. For a guy who looks like one of the nicest men in the sport, Sonnen has been doing a ton of talking of late. According to Dana White, he will receive the next UFC title shot after Vitor Belfort so we will have to wait two months to see who Sonnen will be trash talking next.
Two men who also did better in this month's ranking than last time are Robbie Lawler and Demian Maia. Lawler was coming off a disappointing loss to Jake Shields last year but he more than made up for that one. Melvin Manhoef may still be laying on the mat in Miami after being knocked out. Lawler insists he wants time to rest up after taking a vicious beating (mostly to the legs) before the winning KO. Where will Lawler fit into the future of the Strikeforce division? Time will tell.
Maia was coming off his first career defeat (KO at the hands of Marquardt) last year and he then began training with Wanderlei Silva to improve his striking. While he still has a ways to go, he is not as lost as he once was. He bested Dan Miller over the weekend to get back on the winning track and remains one of the more dangerous ground fighters in the division. Perhaps only Jacare Souza is as skilled on the ground as Maia.
The only remaining fight of note this month is between Michael Bisping and Wanderlei Silva in Australia. We have seen both men knocked out in vicious ways, do you think history will strike again?
Before we continue, I want to give some space to American Top Team middleweight Hector Lombard. He is on a 12-fight winning streak and has not lost in eighteen fights (his last loss came against Gegard Mousasi in PRIDE). The Bellator champion defeated Kalib Starnes in November and won another fight less than a week ago in Miami. I hope he can sign with one of the bigger promotions because his talent is not being tested on the smaller shows. SIGN HECTOR LOMBARD!
FEEDBACK to Last Week's PFP Rankings
From RP:
no offense to Rodrigo but he's no Top 15 pound for pound fighter..why is he ranked over Faber or even Shields Why do you think Big Nog doesn't belong? It's not like his skills have deteriorated to the point where he's a joke. He still has dangerous boxing and is as dangerous a ground fighter as any heavyweight in the business. Put all that together with his experience and you have one hell of a dangerous man. I'd agree that Faber should be ranked but about Shields, until he shows improved striking, I would be hesitant to call him among the best P4P fighters.
From Brad:
I like this, I really do. Quality list guys! Thanks, it's appreciated.
From wylun:
damn straight bjs at 4 again..
ya aldo might have been a machine, but bj resume is wayy more impressive than aldos.. u can honestly name every single person who bj has fought.. can u name more than 5 for aldo off the top of ur head?
BJ has fought the best of the best all of his life, u can be 16-1 but he could have fought 10-15 tomato cans tat no one have or will ever hear of Well, everyone had Penn above Aldo by at least one spot so...
From looo:
I guess the fuss over Shields last p4p ranking has hindered him from being ranked even though he really should be. Aoki should really be mentioned as well, given that he's widely regarded as the number 2 lightweight and is coming off a dominant win. The issue with both Shields and Aoki is that they are usually one dimensional in that they win fights based on whether they can take opponents down and submit them. If they fight someone withe excellent defense in that area, they are screwed.
From phil:
no one that's lost to matt serra should be on this list. GSP is a greezy cheata... Alright Mr. Penn, you need to move on. GSP dominated Penn from bell to bell, period.
From Tony:
I understand why people leave Shields off their p4p list but he has had a great run. How many other guys can jump up a division and not only compete but win a major title? I do not believe that every guy on this list could do that even if they were jumping up a division in Strikeforce or Dream. The current champions in UFC make it a little more difficult to accomplish this feat. Of course Shields deserves respect for his success but do you think he would be favored in fights against guys like Miguel Torres, Dan Henderson, Mike Brown or Rampage Jackson?
From Uchu:
And wheres MINOWAMAN?? Damn. I may as well quit right now. I apologize.
From A. Coolman:
Fedor should be 3 because out of his last 5 fights only three were legit heavyweights. Matt Lindland has no business fighting at HW and Hong Man Choi is a freakshow with gigantism.
That is why I think the top 3 are spot on. That is certainly a good thought process but at the same time, when do you take away from the man's skills because of a record and vice versa?
From KSti:
As is the norm lately, Mousasi is ranked far too high when he shouldn't even be ranked in pound for pound.
Although, he did beat the worldbeater, Gary Goodridge. So he's got that going for him. Why the hate for Babalu? He has shown submission skills and striking skills and has not been in danger of losing in some time. Granted some of his fights are against subpar opponents, he does have big wins against such names as Jacare, Babalu, Lombard, Kang and Manhoef.
From Al Gore's Cousin towards KSti:
Why the Mousasi hate? I don't see any reason for him not to be ranked in the top fifteen. I probably wouldn't put him ahead of Torres or Brown or Bowells, but I would put him ahead of guys like Rampage and Big Nog. Perhaps he is a bit high, I could understand that.
From mae:
I'm just commenting because I like that every post gets a reply on the next rankings post Well thank you for taking the time.
From Andy:
sorry guys, but you've all become victims of the UFC hype machine. there is absolutely NO WAY IN THE WORLD that fedor is not the best p4p fighter in the world. should be undefeated but for a dud call, and i can't remember the last time he even looked like losing. recent fights against rogers, arlovski and sylvia were against top fighters, and the arlovski and sylvia fights were 'murderisations' of 2 former ufc world champs.
whilst anderson silva is comparable in his record, the quality of opposition he has beaten over the last 4 years, with the exception of henderson and franklin, are not comparable to those whom fedor has beaten.
and gsp? matt serra says anyone who rates gsp as the best p4p fighter in the world is an idiot. Why bring up the Matt Serra win over GSP when it was years ago and GSP came back and whooped Serra? It's not like there are bunches of undefeated fighters running around. Even Fedor has a '1' in the loss column despite its circumstances.
I would agree that the Fedor fights with Arlovski and Sylvia were (at the time) against top heavyweights. I wouldn't consider Rogers a top fighter but more of a middle of the pack kind of guy. Even Rogers did well (as well as you could despite losing) against Fedor. You say Fedor has a better record in four years over Silva. Let's see. Since then, Anderson Silva is undefeated and has wins over Tony Fryklund, Chris Leben, Rich Franklin (twice), Travis Lutter, Nate Marquardt, Dan Henderson, James Irvin, Patrick Cote, Thales Leites and Forrest Griffin. In that same time, Fedor is also undefeated with wins against Mark Coleman, Mark Hunt, Matt Lindland, Hong Man Choi, Tim Sylvia, Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers. To be honest with you, it's tough to say that either man's record in that time is head and shoulders better.
Thank you for all the comments, now lets hope the new year brings you all to your senses.

Closing Comments: Others receiving votes include Hector Lombard, Mayhem Miller and Rousimar Palhares.
I still think if Bisping was a more likable guy he'd be ranked higher. Even if he defeats Silva doubt he'll move up much, even though all the same people annointed Rampage the next contender to the title for doing just that.

Jacare above Maia makes me something something....
Very happy!
Also, since we both love Lombard. In your opinion how does he match up against guys in the Top 10?
Posted By: Brad (Guest) on February 08, 2010 at 11:16 PM
I would like to see Sonnen avenge his loss to Maia before fighting the champ.

"Comment: Has anyone seen/heard anything regarding Akiyama?"
Senior Sexyama is too busy bang'n hot Japanese bitches!!(Nation-wide, baby!)
But news-wise, Fighters.com reported that he was slated to fight against "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva @ UFC 110. But that got scraped for Silva vs. Bisping.
Obviously, nothing has been put out yet for "Sexyama" to make his next apperance. But it's pretty weird that UFC wouldn't put a LITTLE more faith in World-Class fighter in Akiyama (3rd Dan Black Belt in Judo who is F'N HUNGRY).
But what can you do, Dana will do what Dana wants (I.E.- Lesnar hotshotted to the Hvywgt Title).
Just hope he give Akiyama a shot to redeem himself from an uneventful decision. The guy seems like he could be a top talent there.

solid list!

Misaki ranked when Manhoef a guy who just beat him isn't. I don't care that Manhoef just lost to Lawler, he beat Misaki 2 months ago.

Where is Alan Belcher? That kid has really been putting his game together recently. He subbed Kang, lost a very close fight to Akiyama, beat up Wilson Gouveia last month and already has a KO win over Jorge Santiago.
He has definitely earned a spot over guys like Khalidov, Santiago, or Misaki.

This list is a HUGE JOKE when you see someone like Jake Shields who is not only the second biggest promotion in the world MW Champion BUT Also UNDEFEATED Since more than 5 straight years and has been been finished only ONCE in 29 fights.
Jake Shields should number 2 on your list next to Anderson Silva and AHEAD of Sherdog and the IWC Poster Boy Hollywood Henderson, love it or not.
How can guys like Soennen AND Marquardt be ahead of him is beyond me really.
Posted By: 411 Mania Staff = Sherdogers (Guest) on February 09, 2010 at 08:12 AM
Maia schooled Sonnen but lost to Marquardt via punch of doom. MMAth says Maia should be above Sonnen. If Maia's striking has improved enough, I see him beating Sonnen again.
That pic of Silva "looking" at Forrest's punch is awesome.

No love for Melvin? Considering he recently beat Misaki, and i don't care what anyone says Lawler's win over him was a fluke.

Okami gets one loss on his record and he's knocked down to eleventh? Weak.
Posted By: Kris (Guest) on February 09, 2010 at 10:27 AM
Otherwise good list, but Belcher should definitely be there!
