411 MMA Rankings 02.23.10: Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 02.23.2010

Welcome to the final edition of the 411 MMA Rankings in February in the wake of UFC 110. Over the weekend, we saw last month's number four ranked Minotauro Nogueira be knocked out by #6 ranked Cain Velasquez. The question the 411 MMA writers asked themselves was whether Velasquez's performance was good enough to bounce Frank Mir from the top three. As for Big Nog, legend has fallen out of the top five this month for the first time ever. History is punching us in the face with that fact.

Speaking off first time ever, Josh Barnett is not ranked this month due to inactivity. He has not fought in over a year and has no fight officially scheduled. He will not return until he fights again or has a fight scheduled. There has been some talk of Barnett possibly signing with Strikeforce but I would guess if he returns to MMA, it would be in Japan. Then again, if he wants to fight Fedor, right now the only option would be Strikeforce.

Next month we will see two of the top five ranked fighters square off when Frank Mir battles Shane Carwin at UFC 111 in Newark, New Jersey. Frank Mir is hell bent on getting another crack at Brock Lesnar, he will either be 110% focused on beating Carwin (and staying healthy) or he may be so fraught with thoughts about Lesnar, he could underestimate Carwin.

Another story to pay attention to is when Fedor Emelianenko will fight again. Strikeforce has not been forthcoming with a lot of details about their next major show but rumors say the main event will be the middleweight title fight. If that is the case, perhaps we may see Fedor fight heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem sooner than later. If not, bad move on Strikeforce's part to not have their biggest fighter take part on their second CBS show. Again, until a press release hits, it's all about rumors.

Here's some feedback to last week's welterweight rankings.

From Tom:
I do not agree with Koscheck over Thiago.
a)Thiago beat Koscheck (call it a lucky punch or not, the man knocked Kos out)
b)Thiago's destruction of Swick was ten times more impressive than Koscheck's over Rumble. I literally watched that fight tonight on Unleashed, and was thoroughly unimpressed by KOS 2.0 (more like Kos Vista)
It's semantics really. Josh Koscheck has consistently been the #4 welterweight over the past year. From that one knockout (flash KO, by the way), does he deserve to drop significantly? Does Paulo Thiago deserve to be the number four welterweight? I don't think so, not right now. For the impressive win over Swick and the KO of Koscheck, Thiago won an lackluster decision over Jacob Volkmann.

From GlassJaw:
If Matt Serra can KO GSP, does a naturally bigger and stronger guy with much more technically accurate boxing stand a chance to beat him? Yep.
Of course, but how many lucky punches can knock out GSP? Do you think Hardy has more power than Matt Serra? I guess we shall find out next month.

From mae:
i'd put paulo thiago at number 3..he has the least losses on anyone in this list and the only loss is against a guy who is on the 2nd longest win streak in UFC history

i'm not sure if he'd beat thiago alves but would love to see that fight
I'm not sure Thiago should be at 3, over Thiago Alves. I'm pretty confident in the top three since Alves ran through most (besides Fitch and GSP). Thiago still needs to put a couple of impressive wins back-to-back.

From John:
JESUS! Id have thiago way higher, but thats cool.

Whats not cool is that he is above dan hardy? Hardy won a decision over swick, a decision over Marcus Davis? and NOTHING else. Thaigo has a stoppage ove swick and koscheck. That alone, despite a loss to fitch is grounds for having him above hardy
A lot of Thiago love all of a sudden. You have a point that perhaps Thiago should be above Hardy with more finishes, but Hardy is on a nice winning streak. That has to count for something, rihgt?

From Uchu:
Thiago should be higher on that list...
When it rains, it pours.

From Mr. or Ms. Logic:
"biggest fight of the year so far occurred at Strikeforce: Miami nearly three weeks ago when Nick Diaz pummeled DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis. In the process, Diaz became the first Strikeforce welterweight champion (although he could not care less about belts) and is the clear #1 non-UFC 170er in the world"

IF SO Can you explain US WHY Diaz is ONLY NUMBER 6 AFTER THIS Behind FOUR UFC GUYS Who lost ONCE The past ten months while Diaz did NOT ?
Nick Diaz, you want him to be the #2 ranked welterweight? First of all, this was Diaz's first fight in years at welterweight. Why should he automatically jump over Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves? For all the greatness Diaz has shown in his Strikeforce run, he still does not have a top of the line list of opponents, no offense.

From GSP WW King:
If GSP Improved to the point he is the equivalent of Anderson Silva at WW does a naturally bigger and stronger guy with much more technically accurate boxing stand a chance to beat him? NO
Nobody has ever accused Silva of being mentally weak. Then again, I think those claims about GSP went out the window years ago.

From K. Bett:
I might rank Diaz at 4 and move Kos a spot down I could go either way with Daley being above Hardy.

Kos has fought tougher competition but he also lost to the best guy either's fought, I wouldn't put anybody Kos has beat above semi-retired Frank Shamrock.
Diaz at 4? He has looked great but there is no string of welterweight fights right now. If he can build on the Zaromskis win, then I'm all for him moving on up, but I don't know if a fight with Sakurai will do it.

From stronelis:
Daley over Diaz is a travesty. Daley is impressive sure but Diaz would absolutely handle him. Hell I think Diaz should be over Koscheck too seeing as his skill level is significantly higher, but the realist in me knows that should they ever meet that Kos would just lay on him for 3 straight rounds, so fine whatever put that autistic muppet in 4th. But Daley over Diaz, I demand an explanation sir.
I'd think Daley has just as much power in his hands as Diaz does. Daley is a Muay Thai fighter so he should be able to do well with Diaz and his volume of strikes. However, Diaz does have the clear advantage on the ground but when have we seen him use it in recent fights? Daley would have a chance, but I'd probably favor Diaz, too. As for the ranking, Daley has knocked out a top contender and an up and comer. Diaz knocked out a top contender, too. Also figure that Diaz was ranked around 10 or 12 prior to his recent win so he had a big jump as it is.

From Brian:
I cannot figure out why Paul Daley is so high. Maybe closer to 9 or 10 but # 5 seems way too high. He hasn't really fought anyone in the top so how can he be in the top?
When Daley fought Kampmann, he was a top 10 fighter. So Daley gets the bump from that and certainly was not going to drop after his KO of Hazelett. The majority of voters had Daley at 7 but the numbers broke his way.

From Jared B.:
Would you really say Koscheck was knocked out in the Thiago fight? Come on, that was a terrible stoppage. Koscheck and Thiago both deserve to be ranked pretty high though.
It was a great stoppage. Koshceck was OUT, maybe for 10-20 seconds, but he was OUT. It was a typical flash knockout. Both do deserve to be ranked high, definitely.

From 401k:
Talk about wiping out a division..Numbers 2,3,and 4 have already been destroyed, and the rest of the list outside Diaz pose any threat.. If not an immediate super fight, GSP should at least test the waters at 185..
You're not kidding, GSP is the definition of a dominant champion.

From Rush Nuthugger:
Hardy is 2 inches taller than St. Pierre but his all around game isn't nearly as good. Comparing St. Pierre now to when he fought Serra is idiotic. Also, if Thiago Alves (who is a middleweight) couldn't knock St. Pierre out I don't like Hardy's chances. With his wrestling advantage St. Pierre will dictate where this fight takes place.
So you don't believe Hardy and his wrestling training will do much for his chances on the ground? *laughs*

From A. Coolman:
With #2 v. #3 and then #4 v. #5 fighting the rankings are definitely going to be shaken up soon. The one thing that will not change, however, is KING GSP at the top of the mountain
Dan Hardy may make you a liar.

From mae:
good point, the rankings should be shaken up a lot with all the top guys fighting

the welterweight division is MUCH stronger than the lightweight and middleweight divisions. no one can touch GSP at the moment, but if you put alves fitch or koscheck against the top MW or LW fighters, they would destroy them
I think the lightweight division is pretty deep but obviously B.J. Penn is the top guy BY FAR. With the welterweights, you can barely make it out of the top 10 with legitimate top guys.

Thank you all for the words/questions/feedback/comments from last week. As always, they are much appreciated.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we are not dangerous at all, I won't lie to you.

411's Official MMA Rankings

Heavyweight Division

1) Fedor Emelianenko (30-1)

Height: 6'0

Weight: 233

Currently fighting with: Strikeforce

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Brett Rogers - Win via TKO (strikes) - Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers - November 7, 2009

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Win via KO (punch) - Affliction: Day of Reckoning - January 24, 2009

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008

- vs. Hong Man Choi - Win via submission (arm bar) - Yarennoka - New Year's Eve 2007 - December 31, 2007

- vs. Matt Lindland - Win via submission (arm bar) - BodogFight: Clash of the Nations - April 14, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Fabricio Werdum- Strikeforce on CBS - April 17, 2010 (unofficial)

Comment: Word is Fedor has not begun training for the potential April fight because it has not been confirmed to him. Strikeforce has been lacking in terms of information but The Last Emperor is still expected to fight Werdum on the CBS show. However, there are some rumors that say the main event of the show will be the title fight between Jake Shields and Dan Henderson with Fedor not fighting on the card. Nobody knows for sure until Strikeforce tells us.

2) Brock Lesnar (4-1)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 265

Birthday: July 12, 1977

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Frank Mir - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 100 - July 11, 2009

- vs. Randy Couture - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar - November 15, 2008

- vs. Heath Herring - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 87: Seek And Destroy - August 9, 2008

- vs. Frank Mir - Loss via submission (kneebar) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Min Soo Kim - Win via submission (strikes) - K1 HERO's - Dynamite!! USA - June 2, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Lesnar must now wait to see who he will fight. By most accounts, he will fight the winner of the Frank Mir/Shane Carwin fight assuming they are healthy. If not, he will likely fight Cain Velasquez. Velasquez has already predicted a "war" should he get to fight Lesnar.

3) Frank Mir (13-4)

Height: 6'1

Weight: 240

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Cheick Kongo - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez - December 12, 2009

- vs. Brock Lesnar - Loss via TKO (punches) - UFC 100 - July 11, 2009

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 92: Ultimate 2008 - December 27, 2008

- vs. Brock Lesnar - Win via submission (knee bar) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Antoni Hardonk - Win via submission (kimura) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Shane Carwin - UFC 111 - March 27, 2010

Comment: Mir narrowly gets to keep hold of the third spot in the rankings. With Velasquez's dominating performance over Big Nog, Mir must defeat Shane Carwin if he wants to get that opportunity to "kill" Brock Lesnar.

4) Cain Velasquez (8-0)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 242

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez - February 20, 2010

- vs. Ben Rothwell - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 104 - October 24, 2009

- vs. Cheick Kongo - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 99: The Comeback - June 13, 2009

- vs. Denis Stojnic - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC Fight Night 17 - February 7, 2009

- vs. Jake O'Brien - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC: Silva vs. Irvin - July 19, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Velasquez looked every bit of the monster that his training reputation makes him to be. He never had to use his tremendous wrestling background to defeat the legendary Big Nog, instead using the speed of his hands with boxing to take him out. Combining those hands with that domineering ground control, he may be the most dangerous heavyweight fighter in the UFC.

5) Shane Carwin (11-0)

Height: 6'1

Weight: 259

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine - March 7, 2009

- vs. Neil Wain - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben - October 18, 2008

- vs. Christian Wellisch - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 84: Ill Will - May 24, 2008

- vs. Sherman Pendergarst - win via TKO (strikes) - Ring of Fire 31: Undisputed - December 1, 2007

- vs. Rex Richards - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - Art of War 4 - October 27, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Frank Mir - UFC 111 - March 27, 2010

6) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1)

Height: 6'3

Weight: 231

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Cain Velasquez - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez - February 20, 2010

- vs. Randy Couture - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira - August 29, 2009

- vs. Frank Mir - Loss via TKO (punches) - UFC 92: Ultimate 2008 - December 27, 2008

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Heath Herring - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7th, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Unlike his first TKO loss, Big Nog does not have a serious illness to blame. Simply put, he was too slow to stand and bang with Cain Velasquez. It was amazing to see that unfold because just six months ago, we watched him look great against Randy Couture in a tough fight. Does this mean Big Nog's days of being a top heavyweight are over? Not for nothing, but doesn't this make Fedor all the more impressive?

7) Junior dos Santos (10-1)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 243

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Gilbert Yvel - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva - January 2, 2010

- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - Win via submission (strikes) - UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort - September 19, 2009

- vs. Stefan Struve - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 95: Sanchez vs. Stevenson - February 20, 2009

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via KO (uppercut) - UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote - October 25, 2008

- vs. Geronimo dos Santos - Win via TKO (cut) - Demo Fight 3 - May 24, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - UFC on Versus - March 21, 2010

8) Fabricio Werdum (13-4-1)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 242

Currently fighting with: Strikeforce

Last 5 wins:

- vs. Antonio Silva - Win via decision (unanimous) - Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers - November 7, 2009

- vs. Mike Kyle - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg - August 15, 2009

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Strikeforce on CBS - April 17, 2010 (unofficial)

9) Brett Rogers (10-1)

Height: 6'5

Weight: 265

Currently Fighting With: Strikeforce

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Loss via TKO (strikes) - Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers - November 7, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

10) Alistair Overeem (31-11)

Height: 6'5

Weight: 205

Birthday: May 17, 1980

Currently Fighting With: DREAM, "Strikeforce"

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Kazuyuki Fujita - Win via KO (knee) - K-1 Dynamite!! 2009 - December 31, 2009

- vs. James Thompson - Win via submission (guillotine choek) - DREAM 12 - October 25, 2009

- vs. Tony Sylvester - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - Ultimate Glory 11: A Decade of Fights - October 17, 2009

- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - No Contest (knee to the groin) - DREAM 6 - September 23, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Who the hell knows when he will have a serious MMA fight again? He claims he WILL fight Fedor at some point this year, but it falls into the category of believe it when you see it.

That Roy Nelson picture is without a doubt, the greatest thing in the history of mankind.

I agree with these rankings just about 100%.

Jeffrey Harris
1-Brock Lesnar
2-Cain Velasquez
3-Frank Mir
4-Fedor Emelianenko

Hahahaha....oh, Harris. I have no words.

There is no way, just no way JDS can be below Carwin. None. Carwin has ONE good win where as JDS has beaten three really solid guys including one Top 10.

I also noticed the Overeem trend - Some feel he is Top 10 due to having the second best skillset at HW (first being that Fedor guy) but others don't even rank him due to facing less than stellar competition. It is a tough one....

Okay, let me get this straight. We're now putting Velasquez over Mir despite there being no reason to do so. Both have wisn voer Nog in similar fashion (although we're pretending one of them doesn't count). Both have wins over Kongo...Cain via grappleraping him for 3 rounds, and Mir via knocking him on his ass and choking him out in 2 minutes.

uh, adam, learn to read captain. Mir is still above Cain. Calm down. Agree that Junior should be above Carwin. Not a knock on Carwin, but while he's been waiting to fight, Dos Santos has been fighting and beating good competition.

Comments 3 to 5 are spot on. JDS should be above Carwin. Cain above Mir is ridiculous. And Harris is a retard.

Didn't Mir beat Kongo by submission? (Passed out)

Jeffrey Harris just keeps bringing the stupid every time.

Can someone explain why Cain knocking out Nogueira makes Fedor look more impressive? If anything it makes Cain and the UFC look more impressive. ??

I think Arlovski has garnered enough respect in his MMA career to have his charity boxing event mentioned. Give the guy some love. He's fulfilling a dream he's always had and he's getting back into a ring

AdamS-Velasquez isn't over Mir,you bell-end.

Posted By: Guest#8457 (Guest)  on February 23, 2010 at 09:12 AM

Note to editors.... Do you have any pics of Arlovski not getting knocked out that you could place next to his list of being knocked out? Maybe after the charity boxing, at least we will have a new pic of him being knocked out.

Wait, let me get this straight - you think Velazquez knocking out Nog so impressively in turn makes Fedor look MORE impressive? When Fedor couldn't finish Nog?

Such anger... shame it's YOU who can't read.

2 of the contributers put Cain above Mir.

Jeffrey Harris should officially be banned from ranking fighters. Absolutley terrible.

Jeffrey Harris is one of the tools who picked Brett Rogers over Fedor, so his list and lack of MMA knowledge does not surprise me. Once a tool.....

Didn't Mir choke him out via Guillotine?

Harris has balls - I don't agree with him......yet. At what point do we start taking into consideration Fedor's competition. He has himself in position to not face one of the top 7 guys on this list for years.....after a couple of years now where he hasn't faced any of the top guys. How do we know his best days aren't behind him a little similar to Big Nog? If Tom Brady was kicking ass in the CFL would we not question him as the #1 QB. If Fedor keeps beating cans for years when do we penalize him for that? I am not saying that he isn't still the best - but at some point doesn't he have to prove it against a top 5 guy?

Or... He was talking to Harris, just a thought.

very good list...

i agree with most commenters and i'd put JDS above carwin. also, this might get some heat, but i'd put cain over mir. i mean, an undefeated record and a 2-minute knockout of a legend. great job to jonathan solomon for getting the list spot on, you know your mma

Taking their body of work, Mir should be above Cain.. But I think Cain is the better fighter and would beat Mir.. In the same regard, Dos Santos SHOULD be above Carwin, but I think Shane knocks him out. Just goes to show how subjective these list are.. I will say the Overeem hype machine needs 2 come to a halt

Posted By: 401k (Guest)  on February 23, 2010 at 12:18 PM

Good list guys. I pretty much agree with all of it. How come Dave Herman hasn't worked for a big promotion yet? Potentially very solid heavyweights are hard to come by so its surprising someone like him hasn't competed for the big leagues yet.

Cain Velasquez number #1...

Remember the name Stipe Miocic (6-0) out of Independence, OH. He is the REAL deal

2 of 6 voters put Cain above Mir, the description on Mir reads that he barely held Cain off for the #3 spot, and there's an article on the site tlaking about the possibility of giving Cain a title shot first.

So who exactly needs to learn to read?

Posted By: AdamS (Guest)  on February 24, 2010 at 12:06 AM

Arlovski deserves more respect. Saying he's one of the top 15 fighters in the world with a picture of him being knocked out is just wrong. Like Ed Soares said, these fighters are human too. You should assume all of these fighters are looking at this article as are their friends and family. What if it was you? Arlovski is trying to pick up the pieces after two knockouts. Your site even said he was suicidal awhile back. Give him some love.

lol - if Fedor is in fourth for not facing top UFC fighters, how in the world is Carwin anywhere near the top? His fight history isn't exactly in line with the hype as a top heavyweight lol
