411 MMA Rankings 03.16.10: Pound for Pound
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 03.16.2010
411mania MMA Rankings present the best pound for pound fighters in the world. Can Georges St. Pierre or Fedor Emelianenko displace PFP king Anderson Silva? After suffering defeats, what happens to Minotauro Nogueira, Miguel Torres and Brian Bowles? Read on to see which fighters return and which fighters are ranked for the first time.
Welcome to the latest pound for pound rankings on the glorious internet as 411mania MMA Rankings dish out another week chock full of elite fighters. Right down to business, three top fifteen ranked fighters competed since the last time they were ranked. Miguel Torres fought Joseph Benavidez, and lost. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fought Cain Velasquez, and lost. Brian Bowles fought Dominick Cruz, and lost. What does this mean?
To put it bluntly, three new spots opened up on our rankings. A combination of old and new faces benefitted and the second half of these rankings looks a lot different than last time.
Speaking of looking different, we will rank the P4P mythical division again at the end of April. That means nine of the ranked fighters below will have seen action between now and then. For all we know, perhaps the top ranked fighters lose and create nothing short of CHAOS as the 411 MMA staff tries to make sense of it all.
Hey, it could happen.
Here's a look at all those match-ups: Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber, Mike Brown vs. Manny Gamburyan, BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar, GSP vs. Dan Hardy, Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia, Jake Shields vs. Dan Henderson and Gegard Mousasi vs. King Mo. Two fights include match-ups where both men are ranked so at least two are guaranteed to lose (well, unless there's a draw, so disregard that).
As for now, the one match-up I want to discuss before moving on, is the Strikeforce middleweight title fight. Jake Shields faces his biggest challenger in Dan Henderson in a fight which most consider Shields the major underdog. If Shields can come through with the upset and someone wished to place him high in the top five, I don't know that I can argue against it. However, if he loses, does he return to being the boring guy who is just too small to stay atop the middleweight division? We shall see.
Here's some feedback to last week's lightweight rankings.
From A. Coolman:
That Sherk action figure's arms are actual size. You know it.
From SoulBrotherNo1
Solid rankings. I would change Alvarez and Florian, but thats debatable. And I dont think Bendo deserves a top15 ranking, maybe I would put in Sotiropoulos instead of him,but this is just nitpicking, solid list overall. Why does Henderson not deserve a top 15 ranking? He beat both Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner. I'm not 100% certain but I know at least one, if not both, were ranked prior to their losses.
From Jared B.
Sotiropolous deserves ranking a lot more than Sherk and GZ who haven't fought in a year. Perhaps over JZ, who has not fought since 2007. It's an argument.
From GeeSpotter
Decent list. I like how Daniel spelled Jenny Florian.
Is Frankie Edgar more of an underdog than Matt Serra was against GSP? I think not I guess it depends. I saw Serra as having an impossible chance, just like I see Edgar as having an impossible chance.
From pikey
This list needs to have to catogories. BJ Penn and then the 1-15 Rankings. That way solomon can have his Aoki #1 Penn is the best lightweight from a skill standpoint. However, Aoki does have the competition to warrant a top ranking.
From mae
joe stevenson out of the rankings so quick? he has a very impressive year minus a home town loss to sotiropoulos (i doubt i spelled that correct)
besides that, solid list as usual Well, Stevenson was not a highly ranked fighter so the loss to George cost him some votes of confidence.
From Rob
I officiallly give no credit to this panels' rankings. Terrible.
Take 25 lightweight fighters, put there name in a hat, and pull out the rankings, they may make more sense. What's so horrible about these 411 Lightweight rankings?
From 401k
Good list. Though the 3rd guy was calling him JENNY Florian because he hates the guy. Simple typo, but still funny. I will say for all the great things in the UFC, their no.1 contender situations can be shaky at best in every division. No MMAth needed, Gray beat Frankie. Penn could fight a broom and sell PPV's so I dont buy the notion of 'creating the most exciting fight'. Penn destorys both of them so its not too big of a deal, but it just seems like no.1 contender is fuzzy in every division but light heavy.. Often, the number one contender is whomever is available and able to fight on a given card. Sometimes they may be the true top contender, others, not so much. Things happen so you will rarely get such perfect match-ups. This isn't to say Edgar doesn't deserve the title shot, because he does.
From Kyle
Whats up with Daniel's ranking of jenny Florian? I am sure he meant kenny but still funny none the less. I'd bet, Mr. Bonnizzio missed the 'K'. Otherwise, perhaps there is a fighting Florian sister only he knows about.

"Jonathan Solomon
1. Shinya Aoki
2. B.J. Penn"
SOLOMON Should be FUCKING FIRED for this BLASPHEMOUS pick!

well,he defeated bigger names in the last 2 years than BJ. Accomplishment-wise,Aoki should be #1. Even though I think BJ would destroy him. Indeed. The argument is valid if you want to argue for Aoki over Penn. Aoki has defeated some of the biggest lightweight names and more of them, than Penn has since winning the UFC belt.
From MJH
Josh Neer, not even a top 15 UFC lightweight, beating Alvarez would blow up this entire list and kae you have to start looking a little bit harder at just how good the UFC guys not named BJ are.
I would like to see Aussie George on this list before Henderson as well. Already picking the upset are we? Give Alvarez at least a bit of credit, no?
Sure George laid the smackdown on Stevenson, but why the Henderson hate out of nowhere?
From saerbarnet
Having fighters in the top 10 that hasn't won in 3 years (JZ) seems kind of strange to me.. Take em off the top 10 until they win again imo. Well, I have not ranked JZ in a few months so I would agree. I'd like to see him compete again before ranking him as either as some of my colleagues.
Thank you for the comments, they are always much appreciated.

411's MMA Ranking Rules
- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.
- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points shall be deducted to balance out between other fighters who may have been ranked lower, but appeared on more total ballots.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

Who besides Babalu and Sokodjui has Mousasi beaten to be ranked #7?
Posted By: RP (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 11:12 PM
Shogun is ranked too high. Although it's arguable he won his last match, the fact is in the last 3 years he has had 4 fights. 2 losses to top LHWs and 2 wins over fighters well past their prime (1 win in 3 years for Chuck, 1 in 4 years for Coleman). It's no better than Forrest's record but nobody would have him near their top 10.
I think the LHW division is overrated in general. Just because there is nobody in the division that stands out doesn't mean it's a fantastic division. All it means is they are all average.
Take out Silva, GSP or Penn from their division and they are those divisions are all probably deeper.

i believe this is more of a name list than top , not saying there great but it should be over recent battles not career, fedor-no, shogun-no, gsp-yes, silva-yes, hendo-no, cain-yes, evans-id give it to him, rampage-no, lyoto yes

To RP:
Mousasi has also beaten Jacare, Melvin Manhoef, and Denis Kang.
Posted By: Alex (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 11:45 PM
Mousasi ranked that high? No freakin way. The best he's done is beat 2 mid-level fighters. And Fedor, Ugh, shouldn't be ranked until he starts fighting on a consistent basis against top talent, which means that ain't gonna happen in Strikeforce/M-1 Global. I think he's ranked mostly from his legend over anything he's done lately.
Posted By: dragonmaster (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 11:51 PM
this list is kind of a joke to me outside of the top 5.
i believe that BJ penn has a way better skill set then Fedor honestly. Bj penn has better jiu jutsu, technically has better boxing, they both aren't really known for good wrestling, and BJ penn has way better take down defense.

i love how i brock and shane dont get a mention and cain does,if you went by 411 rankings you think he would be the ufc heavyweight champ

Just a general question.... Lightweight is considered to be either the deepest or second deepest division in the world. Yet no other Lightweight makes this list.... I have a hard time believing Mike Brown or Urijah Faber (who are in the developing Featherweight division remember) are Pound for Pound better than Aoki (or even Florian and Alvarez) whose accomplishments dwarf much of the list mentioned.
If Jake Shields beats Hendo, he is Top 7, bank on it.
Posted By: Brad (Guest) on March 16, 2010 at 12:51 AM
Couple of issues. How can Aoki be no worst than the 2nd best lw (some have him 1st) yet is nowhere in the top 15? Second, no love for Nick Diaz imo he has a top 10 skill-set. Granted he might be the biggest knucklehead in all of mma, but he makes my p4p list..

Rampage has been inactive for over a year...shouldn't he be ineligible for the list until the fight with Rashad happens?

Is his better takedown defense the reason BJ was taken down at will and overall schooled by GSP last year?
There was just a 2 pound difference between them at the weigh ins... and Fedor has fought guys well over 100lbs heavier then him and had his hand raised.
Once you factor in his skill to take on ANYONE of all shapes and sizes, Fedor easily deserves to be over Penn.

dont listen to the whiners, they dont understand the meaning of a p4p list. Brock Lesnar? What makes him better POUND FOR POUND than Sherk,Warren or Sonnen? Carwin wouldnt even be in m top100

How can you have BJ Penn ranked higher than Machida? Penn got his ass whipped by GSP two fights ago. Machida has never lost. Enough said.
1.Machida = undefeated
2.Fedor = undefeated
3.Anderson Silva = best in the world at his weight class but he's been beaten before, 3 times to be exact
4.GSP = Matt Sera knocked his ass out two years ago
5.Rampage = only loss in many years was a close decision
Until Fedor and Machida lose they are pound for pound the best. Theres your real top 5 list.

top 5 in my opinion..
1. Fedor (only top guy who has been fighting top competition for years and has never tapped or definitively lost)
2. A Silva (he's been tapped out a couple of times and some of his wins were less than impressive..his toying with Griffin win was awesome but not as impressive career as Fedor)
3. GSP
4. BJ Penn (he's been insanely good since the loss to St. Pierre)
5. Machida (a little bit underrated..he does not dominate the way Silva does, but he is undefeated)

I would suggest pushing GSP to the #1 position since, to the best of my knowledge, no top 5 have fought each other except GSP and BJ Penn, with GSP winning both fights. Just for that fact alone, I would argue that GSP should be #1.

Good list until Jake appeared

Mousasi deserves to be that high. The guy has destroyed everybody and hasn't lost since 2006. And you wonder who he beat in that time period in addition to Sokodjou and "Babalu"? Throw In "Jacare" Souza, Melvin Manhoef, and Denis Kang. The guy deserves to be ranked that high.

I have no problem with Brock not being on the list, but if Brock isn't on the list, than neither can be Cain. You can't have a guy on a list when the champion of his division isn't. That's just ridiculous.

I love how "ppl who type lik dis" think that Fedor shouldnt be ranked until he starts fighting "consistently" or that Mousasi is not eligible, give me one reason why Mousasi is NOT top 10 how bout that one?

one question....why did no one put thiago alves? i think p4p (considering he's 170) he's better than shields or rashad. i could be wrong, but i think alves won 7 of his last 8 fights

Who besides Babalu and Sokodjui has Mousasi beaten to be ranked #7?
Uh...how about mark hunt who is better than both of them. I still dont think he should be in the top 10 but im just sayin.

Not being a smart ass here, this is an honest question.
If Mousasi is currently 411's 7th best Light Heavyweight fighter (based on the last rankings you guys did), how could he also be the 7th best P4P?
Here were the last rankings of the Lt Hvy division.
By default, wouldnt he have to be ranked higher at his own division than Shogun, Rampage, Rashad, and Lil Nog? Or do I not understand how P4P rankings work?

Way too much credit to the WEC crew. How about some of the DREAM fighters? They'd mop the floor with the over-hyped WEC crew.

I think P4P rankings are fun, and lead to great debate - but ultimately they are meaningless because there are never enough comparable opponents.
Town Drunk did make a great point about Gegard being ranked higher than some people in his own weight class.
And about my comments last week - I am not calling for Neer to actually beat Alvarez, just saying that it would really shake up the rankings in favor of the UFC guys. Also, I think Henderson is good - but beating Cerrone and Varner to me is not nearly as impressive as Aussie George's demolition of Joe Daddy.
