The MMA Top 10 05.28.10: Week 22 - Top 10 MMA Fighters That I Can't Stand
Posted by Dustin James on 05.28.2010
From Tim Sylvia and James McSweeney to Ken Shamrock and of course War Machine, 411's Dustin James ranks the top 10 MMA fighters that he just can't stand! Check out the full article to see who made the list and why!
Welcome back to the MMA Top 10. As always, I'm your host Dustin James and I don't know about you guys, but all my spare time has been spent kicking some ass on UFC Undisputed 2010! The game is better than last year's version and as soon as I figure out the submissions again, I'll be money! I just finished playing Title Mode with Dan Severn. I tore through the heavyweight division, knocking everyone out until I reached Cain Velasquez. That's when that dirty son of a bitch kept taking me down and ground and pounding me into mush. Had that happened before I wrote this list, there's a good chance that Velasquez would be #1....just saying.
I also happened to get Red Dead Redemption last weekend. That game is total kick ass. It's like the Grand Theft Auto of the Wild West. There's nothing like cruising the western landscape shooting random animals and bandits. I absolutely recommend this game for everyone. Just don't buy it and UFC Undisputed in the same week. Let's just say it's been hell for my girlfriend. It's not my fault though, she is the one who buys the games for me. Why else do you think I keep her around? Relaxxxxxxx, she doesn't read my MMA columns. Although if she does, does anyone know any good looking single women who will be available in about, saaaaaay....three days?
As for the list this week, I was in a bad mood when I sat down to write this (I can't even remember why), so I decided to rank the top 10 MMA fighters that I just can't stand. I don't want to say "hate" because hate is such a strong word. While there are TONS of MMA fighters that I like, there are only a few that I just can't stand, and these guys are it!
So...........
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......................

YES! YES! YES! Of course Diego Sanchez is ranked on my list of "MMA fighters I can't stand". Let me just say that it takes a weird kind of personality to actually LIKE Diego Sanchez. Now, don't get me wrong, I think the dude is an amazing fighter and he can usually be counted on to "BRING IT" in every fight he is in, it's just his personality that makes me not like the guy. We saw his weirdness in tip top form during the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" and he really hasn't improved it since then. He's now developed a new catch phrase that makes him look like a tourette's patient when he's coming down to the cage (YES! YES! YES!). Like I said, perhaps the only good thing about Diego is the guy's fighting skills. Let's face it, if I'm an MMA coach or trainer, I would kill to have Diego on my team. But if I'm looking for a friend to hang out with for the night, Diego Sanchez is probably one of the last guys on my list. I'd prefer to hang out with Gallagher and have him smash watermelons on me all day......
Is this the shortest video tape ever released? Probably....
Now THAT'S HUMOR!!!
Diego Sanchez lets everyone know that he's BJ Penn's "kryptonite". BWHAHAHA! How did that work out for you?......
9) Karo Parisyan
Record: 18-5
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Ryo Chonan via unanimous decision at UFC 78 on November 17, 2007
- defeated Josh Burkman via unanimous decision at UFC 71 on May 26, 2007
- defeated Drew Fickett via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 7 on December 13, 2006
- defeated Matt Serra via unanimous decision at UFC 53 on June 4, 2005
- defeated Nick Diaz via split decision at UFC 49 on August 21, 2004
Losses:
- lost to Thiago Alves via TKO at UFC Fight Night 13 on April 2, 2008
- lost to Diego Sanchez via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 6 on August 17, 2006
- lost to Georges St. Pierre via unanimous decision at UFC 46 on January 31, 2004
- lost to Sean Sherk via TKO at RSF 3 on March 30, 2001
- lost to Sean Sherk via decision at RSF 1 on October 6, 2000
If you looked up the word "huge tool" in the Dictionary, I would be absolutely SHOCKED if anyone other than Karo Parisyan's picture was shown. This guy was once considered one of the "crown jewels" of the UFC's welterweight division, but his "boring" fighting skills and messed up head have stopped him from reaching his full potential. When Karo was actually employed by the UFC, I wasn't a huge fan of watching him fight. I'm not one of those guys who needs to see a finish every fight, but I at least want to see you finish SOME of your fights. During Karo's UFC career, he had twelve UFC fights and managed to win eight of those fights. Do you know how many opponents Karo actually managed to finish? ONE! Karo was able to defeat Dave Strasser with a kimura in his UFC debut at UFC 44 and from there, it was all down hill. I haven't even got started on what actually got Karo fired from the UFC yet. You see, Karo was sent his walking papers from Zuffa after bailing on fights just DAYS before the fights were scheduled to happen. Now, I might be able to let one incident squeak through the cracks, but the fact that Karo did this multiple times is inexcusable. Karo is now unemployed and hasn't fought since January of 2009. What does he need to do to get his MMA career kicked off again? Well, therapy is a start.....
And here's Karo trying to get himself out of a suspension courtesy of the NSAC.....
8) Michael Bisping
Record: 18-3
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Denis Kang via TKO at UFC 105 on November 14, 2009
- defeated Chris Leben via unanimous decision at UFC 89 on October 18, 2008
- defeated Matt Hamill via split decision at UFC 75 on September 8, 2007
- defeated Eric Schafer via TKO at UFC 66 on December 30, 2006
Losses:
- lost to Wanderlei Silva via unanimous decision at UFC 110 on February 20, 2010
- lost to Dan Henderson via KO at UFC 100 on July 11, 2009
- lost to Rashad Evans via split decision at UFC 78 on November 17, 2007
Look, we all knew Michael Bisping was going to be ranked on this list. The truth is, the guy is one of the most unpopular fighters in the UFC. While it's no knock on his fighting abilities at all, it has to do more with the guy's personality. He's just not likable. He comes across as a very egotistical guy with a big mouth who you just want to see get his face smashed in. It says a lot about a guy when the fan's actually LIKED seeing you get hit again after you were already knocked out (if you didn't see his fight with Dan Henderson, I feel sorry for you). The hatred for Bisping started with his run on "The Ultimate Fighter" season three. Bisping knew he was the best one in the light heavyweight division on the show and he basically knew he was going to win the whole thing, which of course didn't make him any new fans. Since the show, the line of Bisping haters has only grown and I honestly don't see it ever improving. That is, unless Bisping saves a bunch of puppies from a burning house or something, but I just don't see that happening.
It just never gets old seeing this footage.........
7) Thales Leites
Record: 17-3
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Dean Lister via unanimous decision at MFC 23 on December 4, 2009
- defeated Drew McFedries via rear naked choke at UFC 90 on October 25, 2008
- defeated Nate Marquardt via split decision at UFC 85 on June 7, 2008
- defeated Pete Sell via unanimous decision at UFC 69 on April 7, 2007
Losses:
- lost to Alessio Sakara via split decision at UFC 101 on August 8, 2009
- lost to Anderson Silva via unanimous decision at UFC 97 on April 18, 2009
- lost to Martin Kampmann via unanimous decision at The Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale on November 11, 2006
Thales Leites happens to be one of those guys who's actually ranked on this list for his fighting abilities more so than his personality. The truth is, I don't really know much about Thales Leites' personality, but the bottom line is....if the guy is fighting on the card, I usually know I can skip the fight because it's going to be one big boring snooze fest. The UFC had high hopes for Leites after he defeated Marquardt and McFedries en route to a title shot against Anderson Silva at UFC 97. The only problem is, neither man really came to fight and what took place was one of the most boring fights I had ever seen (and that says something considering I'm a huge fan of Silva). Well, needless to say Dana White was pissed. However, he was willing to give Leites one more chance. This time he put Leites in a fight against a guy who usually brings some action in Alessio Sakara. Once again though, we got another boring fight which Leites lost in a close split decision. However, Dana White and company were so fed up with Leites' boring ways that they gave him his walking papers even though he was the #1 contender to Anderson Silva's middleweight title just months before. They had had enough and who could really blame them? Leites has actually managed to finish his last two opponents in hopes of resigning with the UFC in the near future. Will Zuffa give him another chance? If so, I sure hope he learned how to be more entertaining otherwise he won't last long.....
If Leites came out and just did this instead of fighting, he would probably still be with the UFC.....
6) Jesse Taylor
Record: 14-6
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Jason Day via rear naked choke at AMMA 2 on February 5, 2010
- defeated Dong Sik Yoon via submission at DREAM.10 on July 20, 2009
- defeated Drew Fickett via TKO at TC 32 on October 2, 2008
Biggest Losses:
- lost to Thales Leites via triangle armbar at MFC 25 on May 7, 2010
- lost to Jay Hieron via unanimous decision at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg on August 15, 2009
- lost to CB Dollaway via peruvian necktie at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19, 2008
Ahh, Jesse Taylor. Just one of the MANY douchebags from "The Ultimate Fighter" who are appearing on this list. What is it about that show that just brings out the tools? Let me get one thing out of the way real quick. I actually disliked "JT MONEY" long before his shenanigans at the casino that got him kicked out of the UFC. I don't know if it was because the dude looked like an exact replica of "Big" John McCarthy or what, but I just wasn't digging the guy. Then came the casino incident! Right before he was set to compete in the finals of "The Ultimate Fighter", Jesse Taylor went on a drunken rampage at a casino. He was kicking out limousine windows and aggressively getting in the face of other people yelling stupid shit like "I'M A UFC FIGHTER!". The best part about the whole deal is, that even after the UFC told Taylor to "fuck off", they gave him another chance. You know what he did then? He lost his fight to CB Dollaway anyway and then stuck his foot in his mouth regarding the UFC's treatment of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's legal issues. For a guy who had a good shot at winning the show, he sure turned in to one big joke.....
No one ever said Jesse Taylor was smart......
5) Ken Shamrock
Record: 27-13-2
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Dan Severn via guillotine choke at UFC 6 on July 14, 1995
- defeated Bas Rutten via kneebar at Pancrase: Eye of the Beast 2 on March 10, 1995
- defeated Maurice Smith via submission at Pancrase: King of Pancrase Tournament on December 17, 1994
- defeated Bas Rutten via submission at Pancrase: Road to the Championship 3 on July 26, 1994
Biggest Losses:
- lost to Tito Ortiz via TKO at UFC: Final Chapter on October 10, 2006
- lost to Tito Ortiz via TKO at UFC 61 on July 8, 2006
- lost to Kazushi Sakuraba via TKO at PRIDE 30 on October 23, 2005
- lost to Rich Franklin via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale on April 9, 2005
- lost to Tito Ortiz via TKO at UFC 40 on November 22, 2002
- lost to Royce Gracie via rear naked choke at UFC 1 on November 12, 1993
I use to be a huge fan of Ken Shamrock back in the day. I'm talking back in his "World's Most Dangerous Man" WWF run of course. Even during Shamrock's first run with the UFC, I was a huge fan. But for some reason, the man has just soured on me over time. Perhaps it's his urge to keep fighting (even though his last impressive win was in 2004) or the fact that the man seems to start feuds and hold grudges more than any other MMA fighter? Shamrock is a UFC Hall-of-Famer. There is no reason for him to keep fighting and further soiling his legendary career. If he wants to come back and fight his brother (whatever happened to that rumored bout anyway?), then I could possibly be down for that. But if he is interested in fighting anyone else, I highly recommend he just stay at home. There is no one in the world who wants to see this man anymore, and I don't think I'm alone in this line of thinking.....
NO ONE SLEEPS WITH KEN SHAMROCK'S SISTER! NOT EVEN VAL VENIS!!!........
4) Junie Browning
Record: 4-3
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Dave Kaplan via armbar at The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale on December 13, 2008
Losses:
- lost to Reza Madadi va guillotine choke at SC 5 on May 1, 2010
- lost to Aaron Hall via TKO at WBFN 25 on February 5, 2010
- lost to Cole Miller via guillotine choke at UFC Fight Night 18 on April 1, 2009
I bet the first thing you think of when you think of Junie Browning is "troubled man". Well, while you are 100% correct in your line of thinking, the first thing I think of when I hear the name Junie Browning is "oh man, hurry up and grab the remote so I don't have to watch this guy fight!". Now, if Junie is on my television in reality television form, drinking bottles of wine and picking fights with guys twice his size, then I'm all ears. I'll watch that mess all day. However, if you have studied Junie as close as I have the last few years, then you have also come to the conclusion that the poor kid just couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag if his life depended on it. While he does have a UFC win to his credit, you have to remember it comes against a guy who's only talent is picking good entrance music and making everyone laugh. Junie is long gone from the UFC and his MMA career hasn't improved since. He did score a win over Scott Cornwell in 2009, but Junie has already lost twice this year in what could be considered "backyard MMA leagues". Maybe it's just me, but I personally believe it may be time to find another profession there ol' Junie boy.....
It's JUNIE BROWNING, life coach!.......
3) War Machine
Record: 11-3
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Zach Light via rear naked choke at BAMMA 3 on May 15, 2010
- defeated Jared Rollins via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale on December 8, 2007
- defeated RJ Gamez via TKO at TC 16 on September 9, 2006
Losses:
- lost to David Mitchell via split decision at TPF 1 on October 8, 2009
- lost to Yoshiyuki Yoshida via anaconda choke at UFC 84 on May 24, 2008
- lost to Mike O'Donnell via armbar at GFC: Gracie vs. Hammer House on March 3, 2006
Ahh, War Machine. If you have been following my columns these past few years, then you are familiar with my dislike for the man once known as "Jon Koppenhaver". It really says a lot about who you are as a person when you go and get your named changed to something stupid like "War Machine". Not only that, but the reason he got his walking papers from the UFC in the first place was enough to make you hate him. You see, War Machine went ahead and made some disrespectful remarks towards former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner after Tanner was found dead in the desert. Not only that, but War Machine had the balls to turn down a fight offered to him from Joe Silva because he "didn't like the opponent". Doesn't War Machine know that you actually have to be SOMEBODY in the UFC to turn down a fight? Even still, the UFC would not be happy about it anyway. You would think that after all that trouble he got into with the UFC, that War Machine would try and turn his life around...right? WRONG! Numerous arrests and one porn career later and the man is still considered a giant douchebag in the MMA community. While Koppenhaver definitely has the talent to be a pretty good fighter, his head is just not on straight and that will really keep him from ever reaching his full potential. He is easily one of the fighters I can't stand the most.....
War Machine can't even act civil around Christmas time......
2) Tim Sylvia
Record: 26-6
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Brandon Vera via unanimous decision at UFC 77 on October 20, 2007
- defeated Jeff Monson via unanimous decision at UFC 65 on November 18, 2006
- defeated Andrei Arlovski via unanimous decision at UFC 61 on July 8, 2006
- defeated Andrei Arlovski via TKO at UFC 59 on April 15, 2006
- defeated Ricco Rodriguez via TKO at UFC 41 on February 28, 2003
- defeated Ben Rothwell via decision at EC 42 on August 24, 2001
Losses:
- lost to Ray Mercer via KO at AMMA 3 on June 13, 2009
- lost to Fedor Emelianenko via rear naked choke at Affliction "Banned" on July 19, 2008
- lost to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira via guillotine choke at UFC 81 on February 2, 2008
- lost to Randy Couture via unanimous decision at UFC 68 on March 3, 2007
- lost to Andrei Arlovski via achilles lock at UFC 51 on February 5, 2005
- lost to Frank Mir via armbar at UFC 48 on June 19, 2004
Growing up, I was a pretty big UFC fan when it first started. After a while though, I sort of lost interest in the sport altogether (that's what puberty will do to you) and focused my attention elsewhere. However, after being away for a few years, I came back to the UFC and see that the heavyweight division is now being ran by an overgrown ape who looks like he has a real challenge just walking and chewing gum at the same time. That man would be none other than Tim "The Maine-IAC" Sylvia! Man, do I not like this guy. It seemed that whenever Sylvia was fighting, his opponent for that night was my new favorite fighter. I didn't care who it was, I wanted to see ANYONE take the UFC heavyweight belt away from Sylvia. I can't explain exactly why I don't like Sylvia, but he hasn't done anything to try and change the way people think about him these last few years. Let's just say that going out and laying a bomb against Fedor Emelianenko and then embarrassing the sport of MMA when you lose to the likes of Ray Mercer isn't exactly going to get you any new fans. I highly doubt that we will ever see Sylvia back in the UFC or back in any sort of MMA promotion with relevancy, but that's a good thing if you ask me. Keep this guy far away from any sort of PPV......
And here's Tim Sylvia making an appearance on that classic dating show, BLIND DATE!........
1) James McSweeney
Record: 4-4
Biggest Wins:
- defeated Darrill Schoonover via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5, 2009
Losses:
- lost to Ricardo Romero via rear naked choke at ROC 24 on April 17, 2009
- lost to Neil Grove via TKO at Ultimate Challenge MMA on December 6, 2008
- lost to Mostapha Al-Turk via TKO at Cage Rage 27 on July 12, 2008
- lost to Robert Paczkow via submission at Cage Rage 24 on December 1, 2007
Oh, James McSweeney....how I can't stand thee. Let me count the ways:
1) You always got in the middle of Rashad and "Rampage"s arguments on "TUF 10" like you were some kind of bad ass. Consider yourself lucky that "Rampage" choose not to end your life.
2) All that bad ass talk and when it came down to fight time, the truth is....you really aren't that good.
3) Your horrible fight with Wes Shivers still gives me nightmares.
4) I just can't stand the way you look. Everyone has someone they don't like mainly based on the way they look. That would be James McSweeney for me.
You get the point yet? I really should have pre-ordered UFC Undisputed from Game Stop so I could get McSweeney as a character on the game. I can't kick his ass in real life so I may as well do it on my PlayStation 3.
And here's McSweeney acting like a huge douchebag.....
And that's it for me this week. Make sure you follow me on Twitter for all sorts of good MMA, NBA, NFL, and other random crap talk. Trust me, I won't let you down.
All of 411's zones are also on Twitter, so make sure you check it out.....

I fucking love Bisping and Sanchez...Other than them being awesome in the cage, they're both ridiculously hot!!
Posted By: Sandro (Guest) on May 27, 2010 at 11:30 PM
I'm a little surprised Karo isn't higher, I might swap him and Junie Browning, but I'll admit that's just my issue. All in all good list, though I'm kind of surprised you didn't put Tito on here, at least as another honorable mention.

At work, trying to suppress a laugh at the fact that JT is a replica of John McCarthy.
Posted By: YES! (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 03:33 AM
Actually a spot on list. Except for Thales. He is a pretty damn good fighter. Has good wins over some top guys, and alot of submissions. Everyone just remembers the horrible fight with anderson.
Posted By: john (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 04:57 AM
bring Thales back to the UFC! The dude is more exciting than Koscheck,Fitch,Maynard,Sherk,Tito and Brock combined, just had two bad fights (one against the best in the world, the second was a very questionable decision). He deserves to be in the UFC.
Posted By: SoulBortherNo1 (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 07:03 AM
So happy you put McSweeney on top of the list...there was no bigger douchebag in the house, and the way he treated Zach was pathetic ...just like almost everyone else on the list, he has no martial artist spirit...he's just a bitch who learned to fight.
Posted By: DeeRayMoore (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 07:14 AM
i can't stand mcsweeney either, he acted like a total prick on TUF.
Posted By: bob-o (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 07:15 AM
Harsh to hate on thales leites. It takes 2 people to fight ya know.
P.S Fuck Anderson Silva and fuck all of his nuthuggers

Pretty good list, that video of War Machine is out there, almost doesn't even look real. What a piece of shit!
Posted By: J KTM (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 09:33 AM
Ha - probably the only time in his MMA career that McSweeney will be first on anyone's list of anything.
You picked out most of the dbags pretty well - I would probably add in Tito and both Diaz brothers and take off Diego, Silvia and Shamrock.
The funny thing about Bisping is that he was kind of popular until the Hamill decision - his in your face reaction to Hamill after winning that BS decision turned him off to many fans (myself included).
War Machine is my #1. He's the type of ahole that makes governments want to ban MMA.......
Posted By: MJH (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 09:44 AM
The Diaz Brothers - excellent fighters, but listening to them talk seems to show that Mama Diaz was completely trashed throughout her pregnancies
Tito - the kind of guy you might like at first but realize is a complete dick after repeated exposure
Kendall Grove - the poster child for every smart-mouthed, annoying asshole you knew in high school
B.J. - truly phenomenal fighter, but it wouldn't surprise me if he prayed in a shrine to himself in his backyard

I hate Josh Neer

Also Mc Sweeney said great fighters like gsp anderson silve myself.htf can he put himself in the same league as 2 top p4p fighters when he beat nobody and lost to heavyweight joke al turk.gimme a break mc sweeny
Posted By: Guest#4074 (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 10:42 AM
I would have named Bisping/McSweeney both #1 since McSweeney is a Bisping nuthugger and they're both pretty much the same boring UK fighter with the same attitude and the same trash talking mouths with little skill to back it up.
Man I hope Dan Miller KO's Bisping in a beautiful fashion this weekend just like Dan Henderson did at 100.
I'm surprised you didn't put Tito or Rashad on there though; I guess they're in your 11-20 list.

You forgot that bitch from TUF a few years ago. Ruediger I think his name is. Tried to get a colonic to make weight and was kicked out the house without a fight if my memory serves me correct.
Posted By: Don Keyking (Guest) on May 28, 2010 at 11:42 AM
Karo actually finished two fighters in the UFC. Dave Strasser, as mentioned, and Nick Thompson.

After watching a few old DVD's, I'd like to amend my list. Mir, Vera and Gonzaga belong somewhere on that list as well.

Yo!! This list was awesome! Needs to be longer though. I actually had bisping, Grove, TIMMAH!, Mcs-weenie, browning, guillard, nate diaz, serra, leites, and vera all tied for first. It was just too tough to pick one

5. Jamie Yager (already!)
4. Tito Ortiz
3. The Diaz Brothers (tied)
2. Brandon Vera
1. Kendall Grove

I like your list better Stanley, although I can at least respect Tito for what he has accomplished, and he's a pretty good coach, IMO.

Totally wouldve had Bisping as #1, but to each their own. That guy is such a POS. He pulled tricks on a def dude and then injured the guy on purpose during training. Then as a coach he overslept and missed his fighter's match. The guy is garbage of a human being.

Why is James McSweeney a jerk for talking shit to that fat Asian nerd? That guy was talking about abusing an animal for laughs or something. He's a punk, and McSweeney stood up to his bullshit and punked him out. How does that make McSweeney a dick?

I like Bisping, he just acts like a stereotypical American. FYI America, what you think of Bisping is what the rest of the world thinks of you.
You should rename this article "Top 10 TUF Fighters I Hate" because more than half the list if TUF. Next time pick actually MMA fighters, not guys who get picked for a reality show and fight like 6 times in their life.
With that said, in no order....
- Royce Gracie
- Ken Shamrock
- Tito Ortiz
- Anderson Silva
- Forrest Griffin
- Matt Serra
- Shonnie Carter
- Rashad Evans(especially after listening to him run his fucking mouth for over the past year)
- Lyoto Machida
- Randy Couture

Karo actually finished two people in his UFC career, most people for some reason only remember one finish, saying either the one you mentioned or Nick Thompson, but yeah big whoop, the guy rarely was able to finish anyone in the UFC.
