The Rear Naked Column 06.10.10: MMA World Cup
Posted by Samer Kadi on 06.10.2010

In November of 1993, an unassuming looking Brazilian by the name of Royce Gracie unknowingly wrote his name in the history books by submitting his way through an eight-man tournament in the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver Colorado. Fittingly, the event would later be known as "UFC 1: the beginning". Over a hundred UFC's later, Mixed Martial Arts, as Mike Goldberg often reminds us, has become the fastest rising sport in the world.

Instrumental in the promotion's national and global success, UFC president Dana White isn't resting on his laurels: "In eight years, the UFC will be bigger than the NFL, bigger than World Cup Soccer", he says.

Football, otherwise known as Soccer, has long been considered the most popular sports in the world. An estimated 715.1 million people worldwide tuned in when Italy and France squared off in the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany, far exceeding any number the UFC – or anything other sporting event – could hope to achieve.

White's comments, hyperbolic as they might have been, have inspired the idea of this column. In honor of the biggest sporting event in the world, "The Rear Naked Column" will go into fantasy land, and create the first ever Mixed Martial Arts World Cup:

- Four teams will compete in the tournament: USA, Brazil, Europe and Asia (Obviously, the relative lack of talent pool in Europe and Asia makes it impossible to form country-specific teams).
- Just like in Soccer, eleven fighters will represent each team: two heavyweights, two light heavyweights, two middleweights, two welterweights, two lightweights, and a featherweight.
- Brazil will be the top seed, followed by USA, Europe and Asia.
- By virtue of coin flipping, Brazil will take on Europe while the United States battles Asia.
- Teams will be formed based on fighter rankings: the two highest ranked fighters (according to the 411 rankings) from each division will make the team. For example, if the two highest ranked American heavyweights are Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, they will be taken. Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson will be the light heavyweight representatives and so on.
- The series will consist of eleven fights. The team who wins more fights advances.

Brazil:

Heavyweights: Junior Dos Santos, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Light Heavyweights: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Lyoto Machida.
Middleweights: Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort.
Welterweights: Thiago Alves, Paulo Thiago.
Lightweights: Gesias "JZ" Calvacante, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro.
Featherweight: Jose Aldo.

USA:

Heavyweights: Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin.
Light Heavyweights: Rashad Evans, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Middleweights: Jake Shields, Chael Sonnen.
Welterweights: Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck.
Lightweights: Frankie Edgar, BJ Penn.
Featherweight: Urijah Faber.

Europe:

Heavyweights: Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem.
Light Heavyweights: Gegard Mousasi, Vladimir Matyushenko.
Middleweights: Michael Bisping, Melvin Manhoef.
Welterweights: Dan Hardy, Paul Daley.
Lightweights:Terry Etim, Ross Pearson.
Featherweight: Joachim Hansen.

Asia:

Heavyweights: Yoshihiro Nakao, Kazuyuki Fujita.
Light Heavyweights: Kazuhiro Nakamura, Sanae Kikuta.
Middleweights: Yoshihiro Akiyama, Yushin Okami.
Welterweights:Dong-hyun "Stun Gun" Kim, Akihiro Gono.
Lightweights: Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri.
Featherweight: Hatsu Hioki.

Brazil will take on Europe while the United States will take on Asia. The match ups will be determined via-coin flip as well. We'll the Brazil-Europe match up as an example, I'll flip a coin to see if Junior Dos Santos faces Fedor or Overeem. Drum roll… Junior Dos Santos will indeed take on the great Fedor Emelianenko, meanwhile, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira faces Alistair Overeem.

The fight outcome will be determined by you, the reader. At end of the column, I'll write down the match ups, and all you have to do is leave a comment stating who you think would win. This week, we'll start with Brazil taking on Europe. Next week, the US faces Asia and the tournament reaches its conclusion the week after that.

No worries needed, future columns will not entirely be dedicated to fantasy match ups. There simply will be too much going on in the world of MMA to do that. Instead, at the end of each column, I'll announce the winners, the team advancing, and write down the match ups for the next week. So without further ado, let's get down to the match-making. It's time for some serious coin flipping.

Brazil vs. Europe:

- Junior Dos Santos vs. Fedor Emelianenko
- Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Alistair Overeem.
- Mauricio Shogun Rua vs. Gegard Mousasi
- Lyoto Machida vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
- Anderson Silva vs. Melvin Manhoef
- Vitor Belfort vs. Michael Bisping
- Thiago Alves vs. Paul Daley
- Paulo Thiago vs. Dan Hardy
- JZ Calvacante vs. Terry Etim
- Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro vs. Ross Pearson
- Jose Aldo vs. Joachim Hansen.

So there you have it. All you have to do is drop down the name of the winners in the comments section. That will do it for this week. Please take the time to leave your fantasy predictions and I'll be back in seven days with some UFC 115 talk, write down the second semi-final match ups and announce the results. Have a good one.

-Junior Dos Santos vs. Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor would easily win, easily.
-Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Alistair Overeem. Overeem would out strike Big Nog even worse than Cain did.
-Mauricio Shogun Rua
-Lyoto Machida
-Anderson Silva, but hot damn if it wouldnt be fun.
-Vitor Belfort
-Thiago Alves
-Paulo Thiago
-JZ *should* win, but he's been on a major slide.
-Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro *should* win again, but you never know.
-Jose Aldo

Brazil hammers Europe 8-2.

What an awesome idea for a column!

I'm no expert, but here's what I think:

Hardest desicion and 50/50but as I am a sentimentalsist, Fedor.
Overeem. Neither of the Nog's have really impressed me much for a while.
Shogun.
Lyoto for sure!
Who would EVER bet against Silva?
Belfort.
Hmmmm Alves, though Daley would get him post-fight!
Dan Hardy. He's the Beckham of the competitiion, only with a personality.
JZ.
I like Pearson so I'm going to go with him on this one.

And Aldo all the way. He' like Ronaldinho, we just wait for the magic to happen!

Ross Pearson (close)
Jose Aldo (duh!)

Why no GSP? Surely Canada/USA could be one in the same. Canada could even have there own group. GSP was a must!!!

I know it wasn't the point of the column but it's a shame there is no major event in any mma org.

I mean Pride use to have new years, and that was as close to a "super bowl" of mma as we got.

Posted By: WilliamMorgan (Guest)  on June 10, 2010 at 02:58 AM

Fedor.
Alistair(although in his prime Nog would take it)
Shogun easily.
Lyoto easily.
Anderson.
Vitor.
Thiago Alves.
Paulo Thiago
Terry Etim(JZ is on too much of a slide).
Vitor Ribero
I'd take Aldo to win even before the bell rang against Hansen.

Actually, turning team USA into team North America makes a lot of sense. Do the same for Brazil, turning it into Team South America (I know no one else is breaking into it, but it does make more sense.)

The world cup could be a battle of continents.

I agree with the GSP (that rhymes) comment. USA could grant GSP and "any" other good Canadian/Mexican fighters temporary citizenship. The could even sweeten the deal and say that if they win their weight class, they'll make them permanent, nationalized citizens. Viva Mexico! and Canada!

I know you used the 411 rankings, but there is no way a Brazil team is made without Wanderlei Silva at MW.

"So... You expect UFC, Strikeforce, M-1, and DREAM to work together? ROTFLMAO.

Posted By: WilliamMorgan (Guest) on June 10, 2010 at 02:58 AM"

No, which is exactly why I said it's "fantasy".

For the comments regarding GSP and USA/Canada (team North America), I thought about it, but then figured it would be just a way to get GSP on the team. Still, by popular demand, team USA becomes team North America, and GSP replaces Josh Koscheck as a welterweight pick. Hey if he can't go to the Olympics let's at least give him the world cup.

Yeah, I'd have gone with either all continents or all specific countries.

Your Asia list is pretty much just Japan (and if you really wanted to be fair you'd have added more smaller weights in), so it's pretty much US vs. Brazil vs. Japan vs. the entirety of Europe, which just feels weird.

Interesting column mind. Just feels strange.

Well, I have WMMA2, so I decided to sim these all out and these are the results I got.

Fedor over dos Santos (R1 TKO)
Overeem over Nog (R2 TKO)
Rua over Mousasi (R2 KO)
Machida over Vlad (UD)
Silva over Manhoef (R1 SUB)
Bisping over Belfort (R2 TKO)
Alves over Daley (UD)
Hardy over Thiago (SD)
JZ over Etim (R2 SUB)
Shaolin over Pearson (R2 TKO)
Aldo over Hansen (R2 KO)

So Brazil wins in a closer match then I expected 7-4.

Dunno how you have this without GSP. Easy fix: why just USA & Brazil? You've gone continental with the rest of the world so why not Europe, Asia, North America and Latin America?

Posted By: Troll (Guest)  on June 10, 2010 at 01:29 PM

1. Dos Santos over Fedor, yea i said it now deal with it, Fedor nut huggers. Fedor struggled with Rogers til landing a punch. Dos Santos is 5 times the fighter that Rogers is. Upset of the tourney in the opening rnd.

2. Overeem over Noguiera due to strikes

3. Rua over Gegard via ass stomping

4. Lyoto over Vlad via ass stomping

5. Silva over Manhoef via dancing, cause Manhoef brings nothing that will interest Anderson

6. Belfort over Bisping via execution

7. Daley over Thiago via fluke punch

8. Hardy over Paulo

9. JZ over Etim

10. Pearson over Shaolin

11. Aldo over Hansen in the fight of the night.

Love the Idea... would of been nice to see Canada in there.

Posted By: Guest#6461 (Guest)  on June 10, 2010 at 02:22 PM

- Fedor Emelianenko def. Junior Dos Santos (very close fight...Fedor is riding a 27 fight win streak though and I just don't see him losing)
- Alistair Overeem def. Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera (Overeem is hot right now and the Noguieras seem to have lost a step with the new wave of talent...gotta go with Overeem)
- Mauricio Shogun Rua vs. Gegard Mousasi (not even a match...Rua is too good and facing competition that Mousasi couldn't even think about)
- Lyoto Machida def. Vladimir Matyushenko (Machida...he's one of the best in the world)
- Anderson Silva def. Melvin Manhoef (Silva...man Brazil has CRAZY talent)
- Vitor Belfort def. Michael Bisping
- Thiago Alves def. Paul Daley (Alves is incredibly underrated)
- Dan Hardy def. Paulo Thiago (Hardy is basically the only guy I've seen who didn't make GSP look superhuman...this is very tough to pick)
- JZ Calvacante def. Terry Etim (Etim is one of the overrated British fighters that is used to help Dana break into Europe)
- Ross Pearson def. Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro (close but Pearson keeps getting better every fight)
- Jose Aldo def. Joachim Hansen (wow that would be a blowout)

Your geography skills are astounding good sir. Russia is indeed considered a part of Europe, even though its land covers a part of Asia. Both Russia and Belarus are considered a part of Easter Europe.

Russia does have a historical core as well as much of it's population, economic activity and political institutions (such as its capital city) in Europe. But "geographically" most of the territory (77%) is actually in Asia. So "geographically", no, Russia is not a part of Europe. The point I was ultimately trying to reach, but failed to convey, is that more teams should have been a part of this MMA World Cup. Russia could have it's own team. Divide the the USA and Canada. Add a Team Mexico. Divide up the Asian Team. Japan, China, North and South Korea. You could even add a Team Africa, though I'm not sure how they'd do considering the most notable African MMA fighter I can think of is Sokoudjou.

@GeeSpotter

All due respect to the good ol' USA: I don't think GSP would view becoming a permanent, naturalized citizen as a reward.

"Russia is not a part of Europe."

Yes it is. Even though the majority of its surface runs accross Asia, Russia is considered a part of Europe. Why? I have no idea, but it's the way it is. Google is your friend.

Regarding your other points, it would be VERY hard to come up with a team South Korea or, esepcially China. Have you ever watched the promotion "Art of War"? Yeah, that's the level of MMA in China.
