Cardio Freak MMA News Report 07.05.10: Cinderella Man
Posted by Jeremy Lambert on 07.05.2010
Is Brock Lesnar better than ever? Was Shane Carwin overrated? Who is now a main event star? Cardio Freak reviews UFC 116 featuring a look at all the fights including where the fighters go from here. Plus thoughts on Rampage vs. Lil Nog, Dana possibly releasing Liddell, Strikeforce releasing Shields, and much more. It's more humble than Brock Lesnar, it's Cardio Freak on 411.
UFC/WEC Event Preview/Review
The main event of UFC 116 was hyped as the biggest Heavyweight fight in UFC history. The entire event ended up delivering Heavyweight size action.
For those that don't know, Brock Lesnar is back and he may very well be better than ever.
I always thought that when Lesnar and Shane Carwin fought, whoever landed the first clean punch would win. It almost happened. In the first round, Carwin tagged Lesnar with a short right hand that stumbled him a bit. He followed up with a big left uppercut that had Lesnar going backwards and covering up. Carwin ran after him with punches, put him on his back, and pounded away. Lesnar was covering, rolling, and trying to survive but Carwin kept pounding away, eventually opening a nasty cut over Lesnar's left eye and it just seemed liked a matter of time before the ref would jump in and stop it. Lesnar was able to push Carwin away and it seemed like he had the chance to get to his feet but he either baited Carwin to get back on top to keep punching himself out or he was hurt and just couldn't muster the energy to stand. Whatever the case may be, Carwin got back on top of Lesnar and continued to pound away until the round finally ended. As they walked back to their corners, Carwin looked weathered while Lesnar looked cloudy but clearing. Still, it was a dominating 10-8 round for Carwin and Lesnar looked very human.
As the second round started, you just got the feeling that the momentum was going to shift. And it did. Lesnar wasted little time going for a takedown and Carwin was too tired to do anything about it. Lesnar landed short body punches and was clearly setting up Carwin for an arm triangle based on his control. From there Lesnar slipped to mount, popped right to side control, turned his body a bit, and Carwin was forced to tap out. Brock Lesnar: Top of the food chain jiu-jitsu.
I have to give credit to Josh Rosenthal for not stopping the fight in the first round but also point out that had Carwin came out in the second, dominated Lesnar like he did in the first, and actually finished him then we'd probably criticize Rosenthal much like we've criticized Kim Winslow for her refereeing job in Cris Santos vs. Jan Finney. There is a difference though. Whether anyone would admit it or not, there is a star system in MMA when it comes to stopping fights and Lesnar is arguably the biggest star in MMA. Also, there is a difference between a Heavyweight title fight with two evenly matched fighters in the main event of a show purchased by over a million people and a Women's title fight with one fighter being clearly overmatched in the second fight of the night on a show watched by hundreds of thousands. At UFC 116 Rosenthal did a good job but like there is a fine line between stopping a fight too early and too late, there is also a fine line between praise and criticism when it comes to not stopping a fight and the fighter comes back and not stopping a fight and the fighter continues to take a beating.
This is a new Brock Lesnar. Not only was he humble in his post fight interview but he was in an excited and joyful mood leading up the fight. I dubbed Lesnar, "Wolverine" this past week because of his ability to heal himself plus we all know Wolverine is the most badass of all the X-Men. While that nickname still holds truth, I think "Cinderella Man" is another appropriate nickname. Listen to the Eminem song of the same name to understand. On top of his new "happy to be alive" mood, he's also a new fighter. He showed a lot of heart in this fight, his ground game is clearly improving, and he's still a powerful and quick wrestler. Next up for Lesnar will be #1 contender Cain Velasquez in a fight I can't wait for. Lesnar, Velasquez, and Carwin debut in three consecutive events and since that time I've always said that Velasquez was the best of the three. Over the past two years I've seen nothing that would change my mind. I'm on record right now as to saying Cain Velasquez will beat Brock Lesnar.
We all knew Shane Carwin had "FUCK ME" power. First round KO's look great on highlight reels but don't really give us a clear picture of the overall fighter. The picture isn't in HD yet but it became a bit clearer after UFC 116. I don't want to knock a guy who won a 10-8 round against the champion but Carwin has a lot to work on and a short time to do it. He still has "FUCK ME" power but his gas tank is lacking and he's not strong off his back. His power is going to win him a lot of fights but he may have to sacrifice some of that power to improve his cardio. I'm very interested in seeing how Carwin looks in his next fight, which I think will be against the loser of Junior dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson.
The co-main event saw Chris Leben cap off a tremendous two week run that has all of a sudden put him in the top half of UFC Middleweight's.
Yoshihiro Akiyama didn't want to fight Leben because he felt that Leben wasn't a big enough name in Japan. Maybe Leben isn't big in Japan but he's well known in America and it's well known that he's a tough guy who comes to fight. Despite the disrespect (that Akiyama didn't mean as disrespect), Akiyama came to fight as well. These two traded punches for two rounds and proved that their parents blessed them with amazing chins. Like we've come to expect from Leben, he took a lot of big punches, stood there, and fired back with big punches of his own. Akiyama was a willing trading partner and it made for a very exciting battle. It probably wasn't the smartest strategy in the world for Akiyama but he hung in there and seemed excited just to be in a great fight. The difference in each of the first two rounds was that Akiyama was able to land a takedown, which gave him the overall edge. Leben needed to go for broke in the third round but was never given the opportunity on the feet. Akiyama got an early takedown and was able to hold Leben down the entire round. Despite the top position control, Leben was far more active off his back with submission attempts and strikes. I was ready to give the third round to Leben but it still wouldn't have been enough on my scorecard. Not wanting to see the scorecards, Leben threw up his legs for a triangle, eventually locked it up, and Akiyama tapped out. It was a great comeback and proved that Leben has more than just a big left hand.
This was a star making performance by Chris Leben. He took the fight on short notice and he turned in a hell of a performance. He might be a mid-level fighter based on skill but he's now a main event fighter based on name. He called out Wanderlei Silva after his victory. While it would likely be a hell of a fight, I don't know if it will happen. Silva will be on the shelf awhile with knee surgery and while Leben has certainly earned as much time off as he wants, I doubt he's willing to take off at least nine months. I think the best possible fight for Leben is against Vitor Belfort. It's a fight that should be a stand up battle and Belfort would be coming off a Mir Layoff, which means he'd be ripe for the picking.
It will be interesting to see how Akiyama bounces back. He's had two tough UFC fights, he arguably lost to Alan Belcher and he should have beat Chris Leben but he didn't. I'd like to see Akiyama vs. Patrick Cote next although Akiyama may be getting tired of fighting strikers. It may also be smart of Akiyama to consider dropping down to Welterweight. He's small for the UFC Middleweight division and if he learns how to cut weight the right way he could easily make 170 and be a contender there.
Stephan Bonnar got a much needed victory over Krzysztof Soszynski in the rematch that no one cared about.
This fight went a lot like their first fight. Soszynski came out throwing heavy punches but Bonnar, showing that he too was blessed by his parents with a great chin, ate the punches and returned fire. Bonnar was able to land some solid shots of his own but Soszynski hung in there as well. It was a close first round that went back and forth and they picked up right where they left off in Australia. In the second round, Bonnar landed a hard body kick that Soszynski wanted no part of, just like in the Brandon Vera fight. Bonnar took over in the round, doing well in the clinch and finally putting Soszynski away with a knee followed by strikes on the ground.
This was a huge win for Bonnar, who may have been released had he lost again. He's still a mid-level fighter as Krzystof Soszynski isn't anything special but when you're Stephan Bonnar, any win is a big win at this point. I'm thinking of Bonnar vs. Brandon Vera next in a battle of two guys who were thought to be future stars but never panned out.
Soszynski is still a mid-level fighter, that doesn't change with this loss and that wouldn't have changed should he have defeated Bonnar. I assume that he'll be back on the prelims. Maybe he fights Vladimir Matyushenko after he likely loses to Jon Jones.
Speaking of fun fights where the winner doesn't move too far up the ladder, Chris Lytle defeated Matt Brown by submission.
This wasn't the all out stand up war that some expected but Lytle and Brown delivered a good showing. Brown did a good job in the first round controlling Lytle in the clinch and landing some solid knees. He also had a d'arce choke locked in that looked tight but Lytle was able to hang on and survive. In the second round Lytle decided that he was tired of getting punched in the face so he dragged Brown to the ground, exposed Brown's mediocre ground game, and finished him off with a straight armbar.
Chris Lytle is the very definition of a gate keeper. He beats guys who aren't great and he loses to guys that eventually challenger for the title. Since he returned to the UFC on TUF 4, he's won six fights with five wins coming over guys who are now out of the UFC or on prelims and he's lost five fights with four of those losses coming against guys who have challenged for the Welterweight title since beating him. He's won three straight now and I'd like to see him fight Ben Saunders, pending Saunders beats Dennis Hallman at UFC 117.
Back to the prelims for Matt Brown. As we all knew, his ground game isn't great and he's not going to beat anyone with decent jiu-jitsu. To utilize Brown to his full potential he should fight guys willing to stand with him. After Marcus Davis loses to Nate Diaz at UFC 118, Davis vs. Brown would likely be a fun stand up battle.
In the opening fight of the evening, George Sotiropoulos continued to climb up the Lightweight ladder with a convincing victory over Kurt Pellegrino.
The story of this fight was Sotiropoulos showing off his boxing that Pellegrino had no answer for. Sotiropoulos outclassed Pellegrino on the feet and when things would hit the ground, Pellegrino was rarely able to get past the controlling guard of Sotiropoulos while Sotiropoulos had the more convincing top game of the two. Pellegrino was able to make things interesting late as he dropped Sotiropoulos with a knee but it was too little too late and time ran out on him. It was a very impressive win by Sotiropoulos who continued to show his improvement in the sport and continues to rack up good victories over solid fighters.
Sotiropoulos is legit at Lightweight. He's a good boxer with an excellent top game and a tight guard. Plus he's lengthy and big for the weight, which makes him a difficult opponent to prepare for physically. I don't know when Sean Sherk will fight again but I think he'd be the perfect next fight for Sotiropoulos.
Some people thought Pellegrino was underrated coming into this fight. Personally, I thought he was a bit overrated. He's a solid fighter who is relatively well rounded but he's never been overly impressive to me. There are a number of guys Pellegrino could fight next but I'll throw out the name Thiago Tavares pending he defeats Willamy Freire at UFC on VS. 1.
Quick Prelim Thoughts:
*Dear Brendan Schaub, act like a douche when you beat someone relevant. Thanks.
*I hope Ricardo Romero got a nice bonus for his submission. That was submission of the night on any other card.
*Good win for Kendall Grove over a tough Goran Reljic.
*How happy is Ricardo Arona that a new slam KO has come along? Props to Gerald Harris, who truly is a mini-Quinton Jackson as he was dubbed on TUF 7.
*Daniel Roberts with a strong bounce back win over a game Forrest Petz.
*Is Jon Madsen ever going to finish a fight?
Not much to complain about from UFC 116. It was a great night of fights and one that will go down in the history books thanks to the main event.
UFC/WEC News
*Quinton Jackson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is expected for sometime in the fall.
*Carlos Condit is expected to face Dan Hardy at UFC 120.
*Dana White stated he would release Chuck Liddell if he wants to fight again.
*"Shogun" Rua will be out of action until March 2011. Rashad Evans will wait for him to return to get his title shot.
*Good fight for both men. Jackson stated that he didn't want to fight Lyoto Machida because of his boring style so now he'll like face Nogueira, who is anything but boring. Neither guy looked very impressive at UFC 114 but Jackson was facing much better competition. Nogueira is a very good boxer but so is Jackson and Jackson has more power of the two. Jackson is a better wrestler but Nogueira ground game is excellent and I'm not sure Jackson wants to play that game. Plus Jackson wants an exciting fight and we all know that ground game = boring. Both men are in desperate need of a win as well to stay in the title hunt.
*I like the Condit vs. Hardy fight. Carlos Condit is well-rounded with a weakness in wrestling but he has a great chin and is as tough as they come. Dan Hardy is a good striker with power but otherwise he hasn't proved much in the UFC. He barely got past a mid-level Marcus Davis and then got waxed by Georges St. Pierre for five rounds but because he refused to tap out people thought he turned in a good performance. Both fighters have a lot of heart and this might just come down to whose heart lasts longer. I think this is a fight where we truly find out what Dan Hardy is made of. He got a title shot by unimpressively defeating mediocre competition and then stepped up to face one of the best fighters in the world. Now he's facing a solid fighter in the same bracket as him for the first time in his UFC career.
*I hope Dana White sticks by his word but I highly doubt that he will. It seems like everyone is concerned about the health of Liddell except Liddell. John Hackleman is worried about continuing to train him and Dana White has threatened to release him. I know Liddell still wants to fight Tito and that he feels he just got caught against Franklin but he's getting caught far too often and he's going down from punches that shouldn't put him down. Do I think Dana will actually release Liddell if he wants to keep fighting? No. I guarantee that UFC will need a main event in the near future, Liddell and Tito will be willing and able, and the fight will happen. I've never wanted to be more wrong in my life though.
*Bad news for "Shogun" Rua. He's only 28 and this is his second major surgery of his UFC career. I understand Rashad Evans wanting to wait for Rua to get healthy but I've got a better idea: Evans vs. Randy Couture. Who says no? It's a legit #1 contenders fight given the star power and track record of both men, it's a winnable fight for Evans given his speed and power advantage, and it's a winnable fight for Couture because he's Randy Couture. Rumor has it that UFC wanted to do Evans vs. Rogerio Nogueira but Evans wanted to wait on Rua. While I don't blame him for not wanting to risk a guaranteed title shot, a fight against Couture seems more winnable than a fight against Nogueira and it would be smart of Evans to stay active while Rua is on the shelf. UFC should make Evans vs. Couture worth Evans' time (aka pay him), put it on free TV, and make up for UFC 112 like Dana White claims they're still going to do.
Strikeforce/Miscellaneous News
*Strikeforce officially released Jake Shields from his contract.
*"King" Mo Lawal will defend his Strikeforce Light Heavyweight title against Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante at Strikeforce: Houston.
*Fabricio Werdum believes fighting Alistair Overeem would be a step back. Both Werdum and Fedor want to rematch. Scott Coker hinted that Fedor could fight Overeem with the winner fighting Werdum.
*I don't blame Strikeforce for releasing Shields given that everyone knew he was going to sign with UFC and this doesn't allow him to pit the two companies against each other to get more money. Strikeforce really dropped the ball on Shields though. He's still going to be well paid by Dana White and they released their one reliable champion of the current crop. You never know when Overeem is going to fight in America, KING MO wants to fight at Moneyweight, Nick Diaz is Nick Diaz, Gilbert Melendez is injured right now, Cris Santos has no competition, and no one knows Sarah Kaufman is a champion. Shields was a good company fighter, never complained despite being screwed over in the promotion of fights, and competed in the deepest division SF has. As I've been saying all along: SF should have never put Shields in the main event on CBS without locking him up past the Dan Henderson fight and they should have promoted him better leading up to that fight.
*You knew this fight was going to happen but man does SF's Light Heavyweight division look bleak past it. KING MO wants big money fights and there are no big money fights at LHW for him. Given that it's SF there are really no big money fights period but there are interesting fights for him at Middleweight or Heavyweight. I favor KING MO to defeat Cavalcante because he has a good chin with solid power, he's an outstanding wrestler, and has good submission defense. I don't know how many fights he has left on his SF contract but I have to believe that he's fleeing for UFC the first chance he gets.
*As if the Strikeforce Heavyweight title wasn't de-valued enough. Now fighting for the title is considered a step back for Werdum and Coker wants the champion to fight the #2 contender for the right to face the #1 contender. I know there are a lot of politics going on right now considering that Fedor only has one fight left on his SF contract, Werdum's contract is winding down as well, and you never know if Overeem will vanish to Japan for another three years but they need to make their titles mean something. Fedor vs. Werdum was built as a #1 contenders fight and SF should stick to that. Give Werdum the title shot because fighting for the title should never be considered a step up and have Fedor fight Antonio Silva in a #1 contenders fight. SF actually has an interesting Heavyweight division if they book smartly. Unfortunately I have no faith in them booking smartly.
The After Party Is At…
That does it for me folks. I'll be back next week with something new along with thoughts on all the latest MMA news. Take care everyone.
Another proof that Jeremy Lambert will never in Samer Kadi's league when it comes to writting brillant and intelligent mma columns full of mma knowledge and not subjective the slighest.
Explain me HOW Cain Velasquez is "better" than Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin exactly ?
Carwin has the better boxing and standing game in the UFC HW Division.
Lesnar has the better wrestling one.
Cain is good at both but that won't be enough to put down The champion.
Lesnar is gonna murder Cain via G'N'P Round 2 and there's nothing you could about it Mr Lambert.
Second, Akiyama WON against Belcher. There's no way in hell he lost two rounds out of their three.
It was a very competitive fight, a close one but Sexyama was the more active and managed to get both round 2 and 3.
He was also winning against Leben till the former TUF showed amazing heart resiliency via killing sexyama with excellent agressive work on his back which allowed him to tire the japanese legend enough to lock a beautiful sub for the tough earned win.
The only thing I will agree with you about Akiyama is that he belongs to the WW Division fighting the likes of Fitch and Alves.
But I doubt he would survive either GSP or Shields who are just too much for him.
A trip back to Dream or Sengoku sounds the most appealing and realistic for Sexyama at this point till he is truly able to make it to WW.
Last but not least you're totally devaluting Dan Hardy.
So the guy is a zero and faced lame competition ?
Gono/Markham/Davis and last but not least MARCUS SWICK who WAS the one supposed to get the title shot when he faced Hardy and ended up outclassed by the outlaw.
Then GSP fought like GSP always does and Hardy has shown tremendous heart in a fight anyone was betting on GSP winning via GNP or Sub and survived the onslaught of the WW Icon BIG TIME, only losing via Decision...
Ending a SEVEN Win streaks where he destroyed the guy Condit got all the pain in the world to finish last in Markham.
The joke is on you Lambert, Hardy faced better competition than Condit minus Kampmann and managed to beat them all convincingly.
Condit would not last three rounds with GSP IMO.
Stop giving your opinion as if i ts a fact like "he will face marcus davis who is gonna lose " and "he will face matushyenko who is gonna lose to bones jones".
People like you were claiming Fedor Emilianenko would face Overeem after finishing Werdum and we ve seen what happened.
Learn to share your opinion as what it should be, an unbiased opinion with legit knowledge of the MMA Game.
That what makes Samer Kadi the best mma columnist in the whole 411 by a super margin IMO.

Great stuff, as always.
I respectfully disagree on two points:
1. I don't think Lesnar got the "star treatment" when Rosenthal decided to not stop the fight in the first. Lesnar's forearms are like tree trunks, and he was clearly blocking 90% of the blows. Couple that with the fact that Carwin was clearly losing steam in the process -- it seems like a pretty easy call to make. Compare that fight to Carwin-Mir - I think the ref in that match really endangered Mir by not stopping it.
2. I see no problem in Liddell having one last match with Tito. The fight would make a tonne of money, first and foremost, but also I don't think Chuck and his now questionable chin are really in any danger with Tito. If Chuck does the same thing he did with Franklin with Ortiz, Tito would get been destroyed. Liddell will always be a bad matchup for Tito, and this will give him a very good opportunity to go out on a winning note.

you know i think Lesnar will be a guest host of Raw soon. i mean Rampage done it so i am sure he would too. plus he even said he wanted to do it not too long ago. but i think Undertaker would kick Lesnar's ASS in a Shoot fight. Lesnar tho is the top UFC and MMA star now so i will give him his props.

Too much awesomeness!!!

Cain sucks plain and simple. It will be lights out if Brock or Carwin connect who pack way more power than Kongo.
Posted By: Scottyieoittie (Guest) on July 05, 2010 at 12:31 AM
Guest2561, you think The Undertaker would beat Brock Lesnar in a shoot fight? Are you real, or completely devoid of fight knowledge and common sense altogether?
As for the "star treatment" theory, puh-lease. In any high profile fight, you never wanna risk a premature and controversial call.
Frank Mir was dead for about 10 seconds in his fight with Carwin before the ref stepped in. At no point in this fight was Lesnar even remotely close to being lifeless. A guy whose TKO'd doesn't stuff his opponents face, grab his wrists, land hammerfists from the bottom, kick him away, and wrestle his way back up to a dominant position in the clinch with a minute left to go in the round.
Star treatment, yea right. You write like a guy whose under the impression that these refs work for Dana.

I really don't think Cain can beat Brock. He couldn't finish Kongo and barely finished Big Ben. And there's no way his shots are heavier then Carwins.... Lesnar will take him down and that will be the end of it!
Posted By: xxjohn (Guest) on July 05, 2010 at 02:44 AM
Awsome like always!

Cain's boxing is light years ahead of Carwins... While Carwin is a much more powerful Cain is much faster and much more technical... he also has the best gas tank of the 3 big wrestlers and his MMA-Wrestling is the most impressive... i'm very interested in that fight and even though i'd lean towards Lesnar, i think Cain is a better challenger to the crown then Carwin...

Is Brock going to have to actually kill someone in the cage to get respect?? Carwins uppercut would have ko'd 99% of the heavyweight division but, Brock shook it off DEFENDED HIMSELF INTELLIGENTLY and made monkey boy tap. Keep lining them up and the only 6 fights everyone complains about will continue to grow as you get the privilege of watching an absolute freak of nature. Get over the fact he was a pro rassler and see it for what it is an extraordinary athlete that is doing everything it takes to be the best at what he does.

I love how everyone keeps saying that it was a 10-8 round and Brock was beaten on until the end of the round--did you actually watch the fight?? Carwin was on only on top of him for about 2.5-3 minutes of the round and Brock sprung back to his feet and controlled Carwin against the cage with punches and knees until the round ended. Yup, sounds like a 10-8 round alright.

Is this where Shane says he was kicking Brocks ass then got caught in a hold like Brock said about Mir>If it is then Shane is gonna come back and do bad things to Brock lol

"For those that don't know, Brock Lesnar is back and he may very well be better than ever"
Did you watch a different fight to me?
Lesnar gots no stand-up defence & failed 3 of 4 take-down attempts despite all his talk of D1 vs D2.
In the 1st round he got tagged, ran from Carwin like Tito did against Wand then dropped to the fetal position.
According to Compustrike Carwin landed 47 of 77 ground strikes in the 1st round, if that was anyone else the fight would have been stopped but Lesnar got the "Star Treatment" more than any fighter I've seen in the UFC except maybe Couture's gift title shots and gift decisions against Vera & Rizzo.

Two things: any one else notice that Akiyama, Carwin, and Soszinski all lost due to cardio? Interesting...
Second, I think a lot of people did care about the Soszinski/Bonnar rematch. I cared quite a bit; the first fight was awesome and ended in a very unfortunate manner. The second fight was FotN on a card full of great fights, and anyone who saw the first knew it had a chance to be. So, yeah, people watch MMA for the MMA definitely cared.
