Cardio Freak MMA News Report 07.12.10: CAIN TRAIN or BROCK SMASH?
Posted by Jeremy Lambert on 07.12.2010
Are you on Team CAIN TRAIN or Team BROCK SMASH? Cardio Freak has an early preview of the true biggest Heavyweight fight in history and thoughts on all the latest news including Mir/Nog 2, Nog/Bader, Akiyama/Bisping, Batista/Lashley and Uno returning to Japan. Plus a review of DREAM 15 featuring the return of Shinya Aoki and worst tournament since YAMMA. It's more hyped than Cain Velasquez, it's Cardio Freak on 411.
UFC/WEC News
*Cain Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar for the UFC Heavyweight title will headline UFC 121
*Frank Mir vs. Antontio Rodrigo Nogueira 2 will headline UFC 119. Ryan Bader vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will serve as the co-main event.
*Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama will headline UFC 120.
*Urijah Faber is out of his WEC 50 fight with Takeya Mizugaki.
*Miguel Torres vs. Charlie Valencia will be the co-main event of WEC 51.
*The big Heavyweight clash finally gets a date. I know Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin was billed as the biggest Heavyweight fight in history and that they were named the two best Heavyweights in the world by UFC but I'm sticking to my guns in saying that Velasquez is the best Heavyweight of the UFC bunch and that he'll beat Brock Lesnar.. You'll have to wait until the week of the fight to read the full breakdown though. That's called a slow build tease. Wrestling companies could learn something from me. This fight will take place in California, which is known are under performing at the live gate and while Lesnar is a huge PPV draw, he's not an automatic sell out at the live gate. It's tough to know whether or not an event will do a million PPV buys until the week of the event but as of right now I'd say this would not crack a million. If you thought Carwin under-sold the fight against Lesnar, just wait until Velasquez is allowed to talk. I don't believe fighters should "heel it up" if they're in the position to do so because not every fighter is wired that way. Cain is a humble guy, he won't badmouth Lesnar, and he'll let others and footage sell his talents. The battle lines have already been draw. Adam Tool and myself are on the same side for once to represent Team CAIN TRAIN against Larry Csonka and Dustin James aka Team BROCK SMASH. While Cain vs. Brock will likely be a pick em by the time the books close, Team CAIN TRAIN is no doubt the biggest favorite in MMA history. We're not terrible acting vampires or douchebag werewolves fighting over a pale crack whore either. Adam and I are Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant teaming up to make history while Larry & Dustin are Dwayne Wade & LeBron James teaming up to have fun and we're battling for twitter bragging rights. In fact, I hereby declare Team CAIN TRAIN vs. Team BROCK SMASH to be for the TWMMA Title. It's already more prestigious than the Strikeforce Heavyweight title or any of the WAMMA titles. Chose your side folks.
*Mir vs. Rodrigo Nogueira 2 feels like a co-main event while Rogerio Nogueira vs. Bader feels like a letdown when the rumor was Quinton Jackson vs. Rogerio Nogueira. Mir vs. Nogueira 2 will probably draw pretty well though thanks to Frank Mir being Frank Mir and the history between the two. Mir is the best trash talker in MMA. Unlike Chael Sonnen, he doesn't need to outright lie to make you hate him or be funny. He's just a naturally unlikable guy because of how he talks and how he delivers his messages. He'll no doubt do a great job selling this fight by wanting to shut up the haters who thought the first fight was a fluke and by wanting to retire Nogueira. On the opposite side, Nogueira will be his usual likable self who you will root for because he is a legend and his career is winding down. It will certainly be a telling fight for Nogueira because if he's 100% healthy, he should beat Frank Mir. But if he's 100% and loses to Mir, we may not see Nogueira competing much longer. I have no interest in Ryan Bader vs. Rogerio Nogueira simply because I have no interest in Bader. He's a good fighter and I always believed he would be a Light Heavyweight contender but he's too bland for me and I'm indifferent towards him. Based on how Lil Nog looked in his last fight, this is a very winnable fight for Bader. Jason Brilz was able to go toe to toe with Lil Nog on the feet and control him on the ground with his wrestling. Bader has more power in his hands and is a better wrestler than Brilz. I'm hoping UFC 114 was just an off night for Lil Nog and he couldn't get up for a fight with Jason Brilz after training for Forrest Griffin because if UFC 114 Lil Nog shows up at UFC 119, Ryan Bader will win.
*Bisping vs. Akiyama is a fine TV main event and luckily UFC 120 will be on free TV. Michael Bisping finally impressed me in his last fight against Dan Miller and I'm actually looking forward to seeing him fight again. This will be a very telling fight for both men. Both guys are good strikers but Akiyama has the chin and power advantage. Chris Leben failed to drop Akiyama and was rocked at one point and we all know that Leben has one of the best chins in MMA history and hits like a truck. Bisping has a questionable chin and has been nicknamed "pillow hands" by the MMA community. Bisping is a good British wrestler but Akiyama's judo background is tough for guys to deal with, especially if they're not a high caliber wrestler. Akiyama is the better grappler but Bisping has a very good defensive guard. Cardio will be a big factor in this fight. Akiyama lost to Leben because he gassed out and couldn't defend a triangle with a minute remaining. Bisping has excellent cardio and will push the pace throughout. I like this booking by Joe Silva. Say what you will about Akiyama headling the show since he's coming off a loss but that was a great fight (some have called it the Fight of the Year) and this is a free event. It's far more justified than Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir 2 headlining a PPV when their first fight was a co-main event, that fight was for a title, and they're both coming off uncompetitive brutal KO losses.
*It sucks that Faber is out of WEC 50 but at least the injury doesn't appear to be too serious and he could be back at WEC 51. I think the biggest casualty of this injury is Joseph Benavidez. He's fighting Dominick Cruz for the WEC Bantamweight title at WEC 50 and now he's lost his best training partner and the only man who holds a win over Cruz. I was picking Cruz to win before Faber came down with the knee injury but now that Benavidez can't spar or roll with Faber, a Cruz victory seems more likely. I'm sure Benavidez is still training with great people but it's a huge benefit to train with someone like Faber, especially given the circumstances that Faber is the only man to defeat Cruz and Faber was training for a fight as well so they were able to push each other. Best of luck to Faber in his recovery and best of luck to Benavidez in his training.
*This is a must win and a very winnable fight for Torres. He was once the king of the Bantamweight division but now people are questioning just how good he is and how good the talent he faced was. He lost to Brian Bowles, which shocked everyone but Bowles was undefeated at the time and Torres was winning that fight until he got caught. So you can dismiss that one. People, including myself, thought he would bounce back against Joseph Benavidez. Instead Benavidez essentially dominating him in all aspects and finished him with a guillotine choke. Ok, he shouldn't have been dominated to such a degree but Benavidez is a really good fighter. So I guess we'll give him a pass. He can't lose to Charlie Valencia though. He's going to have a major reach advantage and every time Valencia has faced good competition, he's lost. Torres can't get caught and he certainly can't get dominated. He should dominate Valencia if he wants to move back up the Bantamweight ladder because a loss and even an impressive performance could be the end of Miguel Torres as a top Bantamweight.
Strikeforce/Miscellaneous News
*Scott Coker isn't opposed to signing Dave Batista, believes Batista vs. Bobby Lashley would be a good fight, and cited Brock Lesnar as an example of pro wrestlers succeeding in MMA when talking about Batista's chances in the sport. Batista is currently training with Camp Cesar Gracie.
*"Jacare" Souza vs. Tim Kennedy will be for the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight tournament.
*I don't mind Strikeforce signing Batista because they're desperate for any type of publicity and they'll likely protect him like they've done with Herschel Walker. But if you ever wanted to know why Strikeforce is the mess it is, listen to Coker compare Batista to Lesnar as to why pro wrestlers can succeed in MMA. Brock Lesnar is a freak of nature who was a NCAA Division 1 wrestling champion, only spent four years in the WWE, suffered no major injuries, and made his UFC debut at 29. Batista has no amateur wrestling credentials, has spent the last 10 years in WWE, has suffered major injuries, and is 41 years old. It's night and day between the two and for Coker to even mention Lesnar in the same breath as Batista makes me further believe that he has no idea what he's doing when running Strikeforce. I hope Strikeforce does sign Batista, I really hope they don't have him fight Bobby Lashley (but if they do, Booker T should be in the corner of Lashley), and I hope Batista doesn't die in the cage.
*So much for that very promising Middleweight tournament. I guess with Jason Miller's suspension, Robbie Lawler's loss to Renato Sobral, Dan Henderson's desire to move back to Light Heavyweight and fight Sobral, and Cung Le's unwillingness to fight good competition there wasn't much Strikeforce could do. It's still a shame that things fell through because this could have been the best tournament since the days of PRIDE. Souza vs. Kennedy is a fine title fight though. "Jacare" Souza would have easily been the #1 contender had Jake Shields stuck around and Tim Kennedy has had four straight impressive victories. Souza's striking continues to improve and his ground game is second to none while Kennedy is a solid striker and as strong as they come at Middleweight.
Japan Event Preview/Review
DREAM 15 took place over the weekend and it was your typical DREAM show of good fights that for some reason didn't seem important.
The event was headlined by Shinya Aoki defending his DREAM Lightweight title against Tatsuya Kawajiri. This was a big fight for Aoki, who fell out of favor with a lot of fans after failing to do much of anything against Gilbert Melendez. He responded by proving why he's one of the best submission grapplers in MMA. Like Fabricio Werdum, Aoki didn't throw a single strike in the fight. He immediately shot of a takedown, pulled guard, went for a heel hook, took some heel strikes to the face but never gave up on the hold, and eventually finished the submission and forced Kawajiri to tap out. Hopefully we'll get a Gracie breakdown of the submission victory.
Shinya Aoki is still a great Lightweight. His style just doesn't work in America because of the emphasis on wrestling in America. It also didn't help that against Gilbert Melendez he was fighting in a cage after spending years in the ring, which benefits him, while Melendez had plenty of cage experience and is obviously no slouch. Aoki said he would be facing Melendez at DREAM 16 in September but those talks appear to be premature as Melendez is still on the shelf with a hand injury.
"JZ" Cavalcante returned to his winning ways by picking up a solid victory over a tough Katsunori Kikuno.
The first round between these two was very close and I thought Kikuno edged it out because of the work to the body he did on JZ. The second round was all JZ though as he managed to get an early takedown and stay on the back of Kikuno for essentially the rest of the round. The rear naked choke never seemed dangerously close but the control and punches was more than enough to give the fight to JZ.
I'm very excited for the Strikeforce debut of JZ Cavalcante. I think his style will adapt well in America and I'm sure he trains in a cage all the time given that he trains at ATT. I'd love to see him fight Josh Thomson because that could be one of the best fights of the entire year.
The DREAM Light Heavyweight tournament kicked off and it may go down as the worst tournament since YAMMA. The competitors include a natural Middleweight in Melvin Manhoef, a 7-5 fighter named Tatsuya Mizuno, an overweight Jake O'Brien, and Gegard Mousasi. You tell me who the favorite is. Mizuno pulled off an early upset by submitting Manhoef in a fight where Manhoef had a pretty baffling strategy of staying on the ground too long and trying too hard for the KO to the point that he gassed himself out. In the other semi-final fight, Mousasi quickly choked out O'Brien with a guillotine choke and people were somehow impressed that he choked out a guy who could have been casted for Zombieland and wanted no part of fighting.
The rest of the card was solid but almost uninspiring. Michihiro Omigawa choked out a very overmatched Young Sam Jung with a guillotine choke. Hopefully Omigawa gets a tougher fight next time because he has the potential to be a Featherweight threat in Japan. Mitsuhiro Ishida beat "DJ Taki" in typical Ishida fashion, meaning he grinded out Hata on the ground en route to a comfortable unanimous decision victory. The night kicked off with Kazuhiro Nakamura picking up a unanimous decision victory over Karl Amoussou, who many had dubbed the next Wanderlei Silva. Those people were wrong.
It was a solid event from DREAM and it was nice to see Aoki return to form in Japan and Cavalcante get back to winning but all of these Japanese cards just feel so meaningless.
Japan News
*Caol Uno has signed with DREAM and will compete as a Featherweight in what could be his final fight.
*Good to hear. I've always liked Caol Uno, who is one of the nicest guys ever in the sport. I was at his last UFC fight against Gleison Tibau and he was vastly undersized in the fight and I really felt bad for the beating he was taking. He may not be a top fighter anymore but at Featherweight he won't undersized anymore and he can likely hang with most of the Featherweights in Japan. He's only 35 years old but he's a very old 35 given the number of fights he's been in. It seems like he knows when to walk away from the sport and hopefully he walks away with a win in Japan.
The After Party Is At…
Before I wrap up this weeks column I feel the need to comment on something that was a pretty big deal over the weekend that related to me. Despite whatever you read, 411MMA broke the news of Chris Lytle vs. Matt Serra at UFC 119. I posted the news story at 10:30 AM on Saturday while the site that is getting the credit for the story didn't have the news until 3:30 PM on Saturday. Despite my posting of the news, I had nothing to do with breaking it. I've never broken a news story in my life and I honestly never plan on breaking a news story because that's not why I started covering MMA. Plus I prefer to sprain news rather than break it. Todd Bergman was the one who passed the news along to me to post. He broke the story and he should get the credit. Other sites and people take the breaking of news very serious and complain all the time about not getting the proper credit. I post my fair share of news stories on this site and always give proper credit to the site that had it first. It would be nice to be given that same respect from other sites. 411MMA doesn't break many stories but our writers work hard and when we do break a story, we should get the proper credit.
That does it for me folks. I'll be back next week with something new. Take care everyone.
Puny Velasquez no match with his puny muscles. I smash face into pulp, puny man no match for me!'

funny how these Overeem fans are popping up all over the place now claiming that he's the number one heavywt and such. Ever look at his record? Double digit losses. Sure he's been on a tear lately but who has he been beating? Rogers? Dude is not a great fighter, even his balleyhooed standup is suspect. Cro Cop? Filipovic himself has admitted that he's past his prime and unmotivated (see the post fight after the JDS loss).

Brock Lesnar by ref stoppage/TKO in the 2nd or 3rd round for these reasons:
1) Lesnar will outweigh Valesquez by 35-40 lbs by the time the fight rolls around. Lesnar fights in the 270-275 range while Valesquez fights at 235-240. He won't be able to get back up once Lesnar shoots in on him and eventually takes him down. Cain is strong, but not THAT strong. Mir couldn't do it in either of their fights, Couture couldn't get back up after he was downed by a punch, and Carwin couldn't do it.
2) Valesquez is easily a better striker than Lesnar, but not stronger than Shane Carwin. Carwin is easily the hardest striker in the Heavyweight Division, and he still couldn't put Lesnar away after literally 2 1/2 min of continuous bombs. In Cain's last 3 fights, he faught a suspect Nogueira who's chin has been in decline as of late, he finished Rothwell by ref stoppage, even though he couldn't KO Rothwell and literally had to resort to pinning Rothwell's arm against the cage while unloading on him to force a stoppage due to inability to defend and even then after the ref stopped it, Rothwell didn't look any worse for wear in terms of being dazed or seriously hurt by Cain's strikes, and he went the distance with Cheik Kongo whom for all his punches and kicks, did not have in any serious trouble of knocking out. So if he couldn't put away [KO], Rothwell and Kongo with his sheer volume of striking, I don't think he'd be able to put away Lesnar.
3) Lesnar is constantly improving from fight to fight. Like him or hate him, you have to admit that every time Lesnar fights, you're seeing a new aspect of his game that he didn't show the previous fight. I think the glaring hole in Lesnar's standup will be closed substantially by the time the fight with Cain rolls around. Will he be a better striker than Cain? Hell no. But, I don't think he'll be as tentative as he was with Carwin, and will be more comfortable on his feet in terms of using some basic boxing in order to set up his takedown like he did in the 2nd round of the fight with Shane. His ground game is constantly improving to where he is using his wrestling in conjunction with some decent BJJ to where he is out maneuvering people on the ground, and not being content as to just bomb away from guard/half guard as shown in the 2nd Mir fight, and against Shane Carwin in the 2nd round.
4) Cain my have to resort to attempting to out point Lesnar for 5 rounds by keeping him on the outside with his superior kickboxing ability, but he doesn't have the hand or leg power to do that. Sooner or later Lesnar will get in and take him down, and pin him down. Again, while I agree Cain has the vastly superior striking, it won't be enough to negate Lesnar's sheer size, determination, and athleticism in te

But a 5-1 guy is the best in the world right, and the 33-2 guy sucks? You UFC nuthuggers blow, you don't actually watch matches and just repeat whatever Dana tells you.
Ubereem isn't ranked #1, Brock has that ranking. But the bookies rank him at #2 because even so he has the most ability out of everyone else and has been dominant recently as a HW. I believe all of his losses are at LHW.
It's funny how the UFC nuthuggers claimed BJ Penn was a great LW that fought at the wrong weight division, but then he goes down and loses to a FW. BJ is still the greatest to them, regardless of record. Meanwhile Overeem just sucks and can't possibly be any good.
I agree with Vegas. Brock #1 Overeem #2 right now, if they fight though I bet on Overeem.

Its hard to judge fighters skills by his record. Who cares about double digit losses? Overeem is one of the...if not THE most improved fighter in the last few years. Best striker in MMA,very good on the ground, and a physical beast comparable to Brock Lesnar. Just with MUCH better stand-up and better submissions skills.
AO fans have a reason...you will see...

Horrible article. I got one paragraph in before you brutal writing style just became too much. You write like a hyperactive four year old. Also, 9 photos/other media? You don't need a picture after every freaking paragraph. It's overkill and looks terrible. Learn how to write before your next column, please. Some of us respect this medium too much to have hack pieces of shit wreck it.

Team Brock Smash.
All the way.
Cain has good hands and can throw very accurately, but he doesn't have as much power as Carwin.
Brock will eat a couple shots, put Cain on his back, and pound on him.
Velasquez can win, but I don't think he will.
Posted By: MPMoore (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 09:01 AM
If Cain can win it will be by Decision. If Carwin couldnt knock out Brock neither will Cain he doesnt pack enought power in his hands.
Posted By: Scottyieoittie (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 10:13 AM
Brock wouldn't stand a chance if he were to ever face ME in the cage.
Posted By: Paul Roma (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 10:50 AM
Is this even a serious question? what can cain do to Brock that Carwin couldent we know he cant hit as hard hes not going to out wrestle Brock. Cains best bet is to move to 205 after he loses.
Posted By: Hawk (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 11:23 AM
Man how can Cain fight with you hanging from his balls? He has a shot but he's only shown good hands against ZombieNog (Same as Mir...coincidence?). His wrestling is good but he had a hard time keeping Kongo down (not taking him down, keeping him down) and almost got knocked out by Kongo and Rothwell as well. I believe that Cain and Brock have similar striking skills (which is to say very little standing). Brock is the bigger, more skilled wrestler and has shown way better top game than Cain. I think Cain will get taken down and either subbed or gnp'ed in Rnd 1 or 2. While he may be more skilled than Carwin, I think Carwin would beat him too.

Bisping's boxing and pace will earn him the decision win. He lacks power for sure, but he throws good combos and lots of them ala the Diaz brothers. His guard is good so he should be able to manage off his back against Akiyama if he gets judo thrown.
Posted By: lowe (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 12:57 PM
Team Cain Train? Team Brock Smash? That's not clever or funny. You are fucking lame.
Posted By: Guest#1101 (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 01:18 PM
Iowe, you think Cain has very little standing ability? Which fighter have you been watching? Seems everyone talking bout how he couldn't finish Kongo. Show of hands how many people have seen Kongo stopped from strikes?
Posted By: BobbyTQ (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 03:20 PM
Brocks gonna show the world some "White Pride".......oh wait, I'm sure people will bitch about that being racist right? But Cain's "Brown Pride" is perfectly ok??? Brock in 2 minutes........easy
Posted By: kingave66 (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 03:49 PM
Zombie Nog is a fucking hilarious nickname.
Goin w/ Brock as I don't see any possible way that Cain can win this. HOWEVER if he does, I'll predict it via rear naked choke, round 4. But the reality is that if Carwin couldn't KO or TKO Brock, neither will Cain. I love my fellow Mexican and all but it ain't happenin. I'd love to see a battle that goes to say round 3 or so but anything after that I feel would favor Cain. Gonna be a good one.
Posted By: JP (Guest) on July 12, 2010 at 03:55 PM
I wanna see how Cain fares against Brock I hope its a good fight ill be rooting for both. But I secretly hope Brock holds the title long enough for Dana to seriously signing Lashley to take it from him. Lashley just needs a few more wins and a few more fights actually standing up. Brocks a beast. Cains a beast. It'll be a. Good fight and I'm definately gonna order the PPV. As for "Batista" he's already as old as Chuck and I picture him retiring with a record totaling in the single digits. Bad decision in my opinion.

For those talking about Overeem, he has the same problem as Fedor, an overly padded resume.
Lets look at Overeem's last 10 fights?
Brett Rogers - Faced him coming off a loss to Fedor (no disgrace there) but apart from KOing a rapidly declining Arlovski, Rogers only claim is that he broke Fedors nose and then got KOd
Kazuyuki Fujita - 1-3 in his last 4 when Overeem faced him
James Thompson - has 2 wins in his last 10 fights. Again Overeem faced a guy with no wins in his last 5 matches
Tony Sylvester - has not fought a single other bloke I've ever heard of.
Gary Goodridge - Currently on a 7 fight losing streak, Overeem faced him when he was already 3 losses in a row.
Mirko Filipovic - Post Gonzaga headkick of doom, and still ended in a NC.
Mark Hunt - 5-6 career MMA record, including 5 losses in a row as of now.
Lee Tae-Hyun - 1-2 career record. Not an opponent of the calibre Overeem should be fighting
Paul Buentello - a nobody whose biggest win is against what, Tank Abbott?
Sergei Kharitonov - Overeem's last loss
Tell me, how is that the MMA pedigree of someone who should be ranked even in the top 10? That's teh pedigree of someone who should just now be signing with a major organisation and working their way up the chain.

I have to say I was very impressed with Brock's win against Shane... I think Carwin's downfall was his cardio - or lack of. Cain has gone the distance a few times, and he's just as dominant as Carwin has been. This is gonna be a great fight, I think. I wouldn't put either fighter with a huge advantage over the other, but even thought I want Cain, I think Brock will pull it off.
