The MMA Top 10 07.16.10: Week 29 - The Top 10 Fighters The UFC Needs To Cut
Posted by Dustin James on 07.16.2010
From Chuck Liddell, James McSweeney, and Brandon Vera to Phil Baroni, Renzo Gracie, and Drew McFedries, 411's Dustin James ranks the top 10 fighters he thinks the UFC needs to release! Check out the full article to see who made the list and why!
Welcome back to the MMA Top 10. As you should be accustomed to by now, I'm your host Dustin James and I'm already totally psyched for the college football season and it's not even August yet. Thanks to the release of NCAA Football 11 this week, I'm ready to see the Oregon Ducks come out and put a whooping on the rest of the Pac-10. The Ducks are expected to do pretty good this year, which is usually a bad sign because if they are loved nationally, they usually end up blowing it. Either way, it's kind of an idle time right now in MMA and so a guy has to think of other ways to occupy his time so why not waste it on Xbox360 crushing those pesky Oregon State Beavers until the season actually starts?
With that out of the way, let's say we move on to some MMA shall we? This week I was planning on ranking the "top 10 best fights of 2010 (so far)", but due to time restraints I needed something quick and easy to research. That's when I started to think about the top 10 guys I think the UFC should release and what do you know....this list was WAY easier to put together! Basically, the criteria went a little something like this. I thought of the UFC roster and I thought of guys that I personally believe shouldn't be employed by the #1 MMA organization in the world. You guys will all probably have different lists and they will all probably suck just as bad as my list. If you want to read something good and insightful on 411, then go read something written by Samer Kadi. I usually do before I go to bed as it does wonders for my insomnia.
With that said..........
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!
10) Tito Ortiz
Record: 15-7-1
UFC Record: 14-7-1
UFC Fights:
- Way too many to list here.....
Last Professional Win: defeated Ken Shamrock via TKO at UFC: The Final Chapter on October 10, 2006
Tito Ortiz is an MMA legend and no one can take that away from him. However, the man is done as far as it comes to being an impact player in the UFC. At one time, Ortiz was arguably the best in his weight division in the UFC. Unfortunately for Tito, time changes things. It's amazing that the UFC has someone on their roster that hasn't won in four years. It's also amazing that the same guy was almost in the main event of a UFC PPV. To me, it feels like Ortiz doesn't have any passion anymore for fighting and the only reason he stays in good terms with the UFC is so he can keep the "Tito Ortiz" and "Team Punishment" brands out in the spotlight. Hopefully I'm wrong and Ortiz can possibly turn things around, but as of right now, it's my opinion that he should be given his walking papers and sent over to Strikeforce....
Tito Ortiz. He may be the only guy alive who trains to NOT fight.....
9) Steve Steinbeiss
Record: 4-3
UFC Record: 0-1
UFC Fights:
- lost to Ryan Jensen via submission at UFC Fight Night 19 on September 16, 2009
Last Professional Win: defeated Francisco Alcantara via TKO at Rock & Sock Promotions on June 28, 2008
Who is Steve Steinbeiss? EXACTLY. That's really all you need to know as to why he is ranked on this list. Since he was hired by Zuffa back in 2008, he's gone 0-2 with the company (he lost at WEC 36 back in June of 2008). How this man still has a job and yet the UFC decided to cut someone like Jason High after just one loss completely blows my mind.....
Someone out there took the time to make a Steve Steinbeiss highlight reel. I'm as shocked as you are........
8) Melvin Guillard
Record: 25-8-2
UFC Record: 7-4
UFC Fights:
- defeated Waylon Lowe via KO at UFC 114 on May 29, 2010
- defeated Ronys Torres via unanimous-decision at UFC 109 on February 6, 2010
- lost to Nate Diaz via submission at UFC Fight Night 19 on September 16, 2009
- defeated Gleison Tibau via split decision at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale
- defeated Dennis Siver via TKO at UFC 86 on July 5, 2008
- lost to Rich Clementi via submission at UFC 79 on December 29, 2007
- lost to Joe Stevenson via submission at UFC Fight Night 9 on April 5, 2007
- defeated Gabe Ruediger via KO at UFC 63 on September 23, 2006
- defeated Rick Davis via KO at UFC 60 on May 27, 2006
- lost to Josh Neer via submission at UFC Fight Night 3 on January 16, 2006
- defeated Marcus Davis via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale on November 5, 2005
Last Professional Win: defeated Waylon Lowe via KO at UFC 114 on May 29, 2010
Melvin Guillard is the first guy on this list who is not ranked here due to his fighting skills. Oh no. Melvin Guillard is ranked here simply because I dislike the guy. Ever since Guillard was on the second season of "TUF", he has left a sour taste in my mouth. He proved that taste right by testing positive for cocaine as well as having a few other little infractions on his record. When you really think about it, what does the UFC lose if they let Guillard go? They lose a fighter who is extremely talented until he runs into someone with even a hint of a submission game. If that happens, it's game over for Melvin. The man has only 8 losses in his pro career and 7 of those losses came via submission. Can you imagine how dangerous Guillard would be if he could actually defend a submission? Oh well. If the UFC actually did just cut their losses with Guillard, they wouldn't lose much since he's not really ever going to amount to anything more than "gatekeeper status". That's the brutally honest truth folks.....
Keep working on that submission defense Melvin (Guillard, not Manhoef, but it works either way)......
7) Heath Herring
Record: 28-14
UFC Record: 2-3
UFC Fights:
- lost to Brock Lesnar via unanimous decision at UFC 87 on August 9, 2008
- defeated Cheick Kongo via split decision at UFC 82 on March 1, 2008
- lost to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira via unanimous decision at UFC 73 on July 7, 2007
- defeated Brad Imes via unanimous decision at UFC 69 on April 7, 2007
- lost to Jake O'Brien via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 8 on January 25, 2007
Last Professional Win: defeated Cheick Kongo via split decision at UFC 82 on March 1, 2008
Someone needs to explain to me how Heath "The Texas Crazy Horse" Herring still has a job with the world's #1 MMA promotion. I mean, I know Herring is a PRIDE legend and all that jazz, but he hasn't really done anything important with his time in the UFC since arriving in 2007. The only thing he's managed to accomplish was a nice victory over Kongo at UFC 82 two years ago. I personally don't get why they keep Herring around, especially after he bad-mouthed the company's pay scale a few months back. Perhaps having him sit out his contract is Dana White's way of punishing Herring? Who knows. All I know is, it's about time for Herring to look at other options with his MMA career. Maybe he can head on over to Strikeforce and avenge that loss to Fedor Emelianenko from 2002? Considering Herring hasn't fought in two years, if the UFC decided to cut him I really don't think he would be all that missed....
WARNING: Don't kiss Heath Herring before a fight......
6) Chuck Liddell
Record: 21-8
UFC Record: 16-7
UFC Fights:
Much like Tito Ortiz, there are way too many to list here......
Last Professional Win: defeated Wanderlei Silva via unanimous decision at UFC 79 on December 29, 2007
Ahh poor Chuck Liddell. It pains me to rank him on this list, but if Dana White is a man of his word then he will CUT Liddell as a fighter and bring him back into the company with some other role. As long as Liddell is still employed by the UFC as a "fighter", I have every reason to believe that Liddell will step into the Octagon again. White has already said once before that Liddell wasn't going to fight again in the UFC and he should retire. However, Liddell was able to convince White to let him fight Tito Ortiz (who then changed into Rich Franklin due to an Ortiz injury) and Liddell stepped back into the Octagon. If "The Iceman" was able to talk White into letting him fight once before, I can't help but think he would be able to do it again. Would anyone be REALLY shocked if six months from now the UFC was in a bind and needed a main event, so Dana decides to book "Liddell vs. Ortiz III" because "some" people want to see it? As long as Liddell is still employed as a "fighter" by the UFC, then there's always a chance.
If the UFC releases Chuck, he could always go to Japan and get this "dream fight" going.....
5) Brandon Vera
Record: 11-5
UFC Record: 7-5
UFC Fights:
- lost to Jon Jones via TKO at UFC on Versus 1 on March 21, 2010
- lost to Randy Couture via unanimous decision at UFC 105 on November 14, 2009
- defeated Krzysztof Soszynski via unanimous decision at UFC 102 on August 29, 2009
- defeated Michael Patt via TKO at UFC 96 on March 7, 2009
- lost to Keith Jardine via split decision at UFC 89 on October 18, 2008
- defeated Reese Andy via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19, 2008
- lost to Fabricio Werdum via TKO at UFC 85 on June 7, 2008
- lost to Tim Sylvia via unanimous decision at UFC 77 on October 20, 2007
- defeated Frank Mir via TKO at UFC 65 on November 18, 2006
- defeated Assuerio Silva via submission at UFC 60 on May 27, 2006
- defeated Justin Eilers via KO at UFC 57 on February 4, 2006
- defeated Fabiano Scherner via TKO at UFC Fight Night 2 on October 3, 2005
Last Professional Win: defeated Krzysztof Soszynski via unanimous decision at UFC 102 on August 29, 2009
Once upon a time, Brandon Vera was considered a "can't miss" prospect in the UFC. After making his UFC debut in 2005, Vera went on a four-fight win streak in the heavyweight division that included a TKO win over Frank Mir. However, after losing to Tim Sylvia at UFC 77, Vera hasn't been the same. He went on to lose four out of his next seven fights and has been in some real STINKERS (his fights with Krzysztof Soszysnki and Reese Andy were hard to watch). After losing to Jon Jones at UFC on Versus 1 back in March, I remember telling a buddy of mine that we possibly saw Brandon Vera in the Octagon for the last time. Much to my surprise, the UFC decided to keep him around, but he KNOWS he's on the "cut watch". Dana hardly ever lets anyone lose three fights in a row and keeps them around. Unless you are a proven draw in the UFC, losing three fights in a row usually ends up with the fighter being "Jazz" and Dana White as "Uncle Phil" (FRESH PRINCE REFERENCE +10 POINTS). Vera is now in a must-win situation, so maybe he will fight like the guy we use to think was fun to watch.....
Brandon Vera highlights and yes, someone actually created this......
4) Drew McFedries
Record: 8-6
UFC Record: 4-5
UFC Fights:
- lost to Tomasz Drwal via submission at UFC 103 on September 19, 2009
- defeated Xavier Foupa-Pokam via TKO at UFC 98 on May 23, 2009
- lost to Thales Leites via submission at UFC 90 on October 25, 2008
- lost to Mike Massenzio via submission at UFC Fight Night 15 on September 17, 2008
- defeated Marvin Eastman via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale on June 21, 2008
- lost to Patrick Cote via TKO at UFC Fight Night 12 on January 23, 2008
- defeated Jordan Radev via KO at UFC Fight Night 10 on June 12, 2007
- lost to Martin Kampmann via submission at UFC 68 on March 3, 2007
- defeated Alessio Sakara via TKO at UFC 65 on November 18, 2006
Last Professional Win: defeated Xavier Foupa-Pokam via TKO at UFC 98 on May 23, 2009
Does Drew McFedries have something on Dana White? That's the only thing that can explain why McFedries still has a job in the UFC. McFedries is currently 8-6 as a pro and has a losing record in the UFC. Not to mention, he's a pretty one-dimensional fighter who isn't going to improve anytime soon. I really don't understand how McFedries still has a job in the UFC. If it wasn't for a win over Xavier Foupa-Pokam at UFC 98, McFedries would be in Strikeforce getting submitted by "Jacare" Souza. We haven't seen McFedries since he fought Tomasz Drwal at UFC 103, but the guy has to know he's on thin ice with the UFC. The hard part about this whole thing is, McFedries is actually a good dude. However, sometimes you have to separate "professional" feelings and "personal" feelings and in this case, McFedries should have been handed his walking papers from the #1 MMA organization in the world along time ago.....
OMG! It's Anderson Silva vs. Drew McFedries! SOMEONE SAVE THAT MAN!.....
3) Renzo Gracie
Record: 13-7-1
UFC Record: 0-1
UFC Fights:
- lost to Matt Hughes via TKO at UFC 112 on April 10, 2010
Last Professional Win: defeated Frank Shamrock via DQ at EliteXC: Destiny on February 10, 2007
Listen, I have the utmost respect for Renzo Gracie (and any member of the Gracie family for that matter), but Renzo should not be fighting in the #1 MMA promotion in the world at this point in his career. It's really debatable if Renzo should be fighting ANYWHERE at this point in his career, much less on a PPV or any other UFC show that's being watched by millions of people. Renzo should focus more time on training the young guns and less time on his legacy. While it's sad that we didn't get to see Gracie compete in the UFC during his prime, none of us really want to see the old man getting thrown around by guys he could have beat back in the day.....
The legacy of Renzo Gracie. Watch it, love it, but just make sure you return it in the same shape it was in.......
2) Phil Baroni
Record: 13-12
UFC Record: 3-6
UFC Fights:
- lost to Amir Sadollah via unanimous decision at UFC 106 on November 21, 2009
- lost to Pete Sell via submission at UFC 51 on February 5, 2005
- lost to Evan Tanner via unanimous decision at UFC 48 on June 19, 2004
- lost to Evan Tanner via TKO at UFC 45 on November 21, 2003
- lost to Matt Lindland via unanimous decision at UFC 41 on February 28, 2003
- defeated Dave Menne via KO at UFC 39 on September 27, 2002
- defeated Amar Suloev via TKO at UFC 37 on May 10, 2002
- lost to Matt Lindland via majority decision at UFC 34 on November 2, 2001
- defeated Curtis Stout via unanimous decision at UFC 30 on February 23, 2001
Last Professional Win: defeated Olaf Alfonso via unanimous decision at PFC 10 on September 26, 2008
I know I wasn't the only person who was absolutely shocked that the UFC decided to sign the "New York Bad Ass" almost a year ago. Why did Dana feel the need to bring the 13-12 Baroni back into the UFC? Did he feel sorry for Baroni so he decided to give him another chance? Did he think that Baroni had improved enough as a fighter that he could possibly make some noise in the UFC if brought back? Or did Dana just decide to bring Baroni back because the man has one of the coolest entrances in MMA? Yes....that must be it. If you know a better reason, then I would love to hear it.
Phil Baroni believe he's a rock star, who are we to tell him he's not?.......
1) James McSweeney
Record: 4-5
UFC Record: 1-1
UFC Fights:
- lost to Travis Browne via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale on June 19, 2010
- defeated Darrill Schoonover via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5, 2009
Last Professional Win: defeated Darrill Schoonover via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5, 2009
Ohhh, James McSweeney, James McSweeney. How did you EVER get hired by the UFC? Most of you will remember a few weeks back when I ranked the top 10 fighters I can't stand and I ranked McDouchebag #1 overall. If you read that article, then you honestly can't be shocked that I would rank the man #1 on this list. Following his horrible stint on "TUF 10", I was absolutely shocked that the UFC would decide to bring this non-talented "fighter" back. The thing about McSweeney is this, the man's ass can't cash checks that his mouth writes. If "verbal" skills and "getting in people's faces" could make you a good fighter, than McSweeney would be well on his way to becoming the #1 fighter in the world. Here's to hoping you lose your next fight so the UFC stops poisoning our television airwaves by televising your excellent fighting skills.....
BWHAHAHAHA! If you really want proof that James McSweeney sucks......
And that's it for me this week. Make sure you follow me on Twitter for all sorts of good MMA, NBA, NFL, and other random crap talk. Trust me, I won't let you down.
All of 411's zones are also on Twitter, so make sure you check it out.....

Frank Trigg?
Posted By: Ryan Wile (Guest) on July 15, 2010 at 10:59 PM
i disagree on melvin.G
Posted By: inf3rno (Guest) on July 15, 2010 at 11:24 PM
Renzo is not cut. Frank Trigg has been. I want to say McFedries has been cut too, but I'm not certain there.
Posted By: Guest#3240 (Guest) on July 15, 2010 at 11:26 PM
Mark Hunt. Cut him before he can put me in a trance with the motion of his hypnotic flab.
Posted By: Sammy (Guest) on July 15, 2010 at 11:56 PM
I could have sworn I heard about Heath Herring getting the axe a few months back.
Posted By: Guest#6233 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 12:33 AM
Does Mac Danzig still work there?
If so, cut his ass. Saunders and Sotiropolous have already proven that season worthwhile. No reason to keep this guy.
Posted By: the danger stranger (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 12:33 AM
UFC has to keep Tito & Chuck aroung so they can have 1 last fight, which is a guarantee big money mainevent. Then they can release them.
Posted By: Ryan Haseldine (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 01:39 AM
Melvin shouldn't have been on the list, wasted spot. And I believe McFedries was cut a while back and will be fighting in Canada soon.
Posted By: zwarrior2 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 03:40 AM
Dumb list is dumb
Posted By: Jusi Christo (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 03:48 AM
Unfortunately for Tito, time changes things. It's amazing that the UFC has someone on their roster that hasn't won in four years. It's also amazing that the same guy was almost in the main event of a UFC PPV
Ummmmmmm, he WAS in the main event of a UFC PPV in December of last year no less

You forgot A Silva. You know the fucking clown who thinks he's in a circus instead of a ring.
Posted By: Guest#9507 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 05:56 AM
I like the New York Bad Ass thats why!!
Posted By: yabrokehomie (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 07:39 AM
I know your personal taste dictated the top spot, but the actual #1 spot should be Vera. The guy is just a bland fighter, that because he has a shred of name value gets a lot of main events and sub main events, when he should be relegated to fighting on the waaaay undercard.
Posted By: Guest#7832 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 08:19 AM
Is antoni hardonk still around?
I hate to say this but if pat berry loses his next fight im sure he'll be gone.
Posted By: ya ya (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 08:49 AM
Vera's ribs make uncomfortable. WTF is that poking out? And why hasn't someone tried to punch or kick them for a easy broken rib.
Posted By: Adam (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 09:39 AM
they should cut Guillard because you dislike him? Especially that lately he showed signs of improvement in the ground game.
Brandon Vera? He nearly finished Randy Couture then lost by controversial decision. Got beaten by Jon Jones, big deal,JJ would beat half of that division in similiar fashion.
Posted By: SoulBrotherNo1 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 09:40 AM
Terrible list dude
Posted By: Dingo (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 10:00 AM
Who cares? Everyone you listed here would beat your ass!
Posted By: Guest#1219 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 10:25 AM
good list. i think Vera should stay but the rest can go.
Posted By: phil (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 10:37 AM
Clay Guida - He may been fun to watch, but he has already proven that he is not on the same level as the "elite" LW's...It would be nice to see him in the WEC.
Stephan Bonnar - Another exciting fighter that has lost too many times. I think it is safe to say he will never wear UFC gold.
Randy Couture - Amazing fighter in his prime, now just an antique show. His Fight with Coleman was god awful, I expect the same from his fight with Toney. He will never wear UFC gold again.
Matt Hughes - See above. This antique show bullshit is getting "old".
Mac Danzig - Worst Ultimate Fighter winner in the history of the show.
Posted By: White Recluse (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 12:09 PM
This is one of the worst columns I've ever read. Seriously? Someone on a well received site referred to a professional fighter as "McDouchebag"? Wow...Ortiz is still on the roster because he draws money. He hasn't won in four years yet has been injured for about two of those. Guillard won't be cut because he's won 4 of his last 5 fights. And Herring is still under contract simply out of spite. Your list sucks and you suck. I hope you're not getting paid for this trash.
Posted By: Guest#1944 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 01:18 PM
Why is Guillard on this list? Like him or not he has won his last two fights.
Posted By: John Doe (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 03:27 PM
There's about two dozen guys that should be cut before Guillard.
Posted By: Guest#4533 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 03:58 PM
So, because you dislike Melvin, he should be cut? Sound logic there. As far as his sub defense goes, have you seen ANY of his recent fights? He's improved immensely since joining the Jackson camp and he's still a young guy who's only going to get better. But then again, you don't like him. So let's cut the guy who has won 4 of his last 5 in the UFC. Ugh.
Posted By: $ean (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 05:06 PM
Oh, and the reason they brought Baroni back is because the guy ALWAYS puts on exciting fights. Simple as that.
Posted By: $ean (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 05:08 PM
That video of Ortiz kneeing the bag would be the Ultimate GIF... someone make it and post it online! Looked like he was doing some f'd up dance.
Posted By: Guest#5546 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 05:47 PM
as soon as you said melvin guillard should be cut not for his skill but because i dislike him made me quickly faggot you need to be fired
seriously your a news columnist whos acted liking like a little kid go write for porn its that how you do your job, if i was your boss id fire you for acting like a fucking joke loser
Posted By: MAC (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 07:06 PM
This list was a complete waste of time! UFC is out to make money and they have a roster full of all different kinds of fighters to do that with. Some great fighters Some not so great. BUT they all have a purpose.
Posted By: Guest#3812 (Guest) on July 16, 2010 at 08:02 PM
Is Joe Riggs still with the company? I remember him gettin' his ass handed to him plenty of times. And Kendall Grove (smh) probably should go too. Too many losses in a short amount of time.

"as soon as you said melvin guillard

Yeah this is a crappy column!
Posted By: Top (Guest) on July 17, 2010 at 01:48 AM
They'll never cut Chuck. Dana likes him too much to fire him, even if he never steps into the cage again. They'll think of something for him to do.
Posted By: woody (Guest) on July 17, 2010 at 05:50 AM
This list is an epic FAIL! You have no credibility you want to cut people cause you don't like them. What kind of crap is this all this article is "cut this guy I don't like them." I hope 411 get's rid of you for writing this garabge.
Posted By: The Captain (Guest) on July 17, 2010 at 11:28 AM
After readling this I realized why you work as a stocker at Walmart instead of running a multi-billion dollar MMA promotion. Good luck with this "writing" stuff.

Wow Dustin James with another moronic column. Did someone make 411 hire a moron to balance out 411 after they got good writers like Kuch and Sammer?
You made a top ten on who's ass you hated the most. I read the first and thought “well this is pretty objective so far.”
Tito is in the UFC so Dana can keep him out of Strike Force. But you are right, on merit, he should be fired.
You dug up a nobody like Steve Steinbeiss just so you could get on your high horse about one of your favorites getting the ax.
GROW THE FUCK UP!
Melvin is one of those fighters Dana has taken a chance on and in the long run of things has cleaned up his act by moving to Greg Jackson's camp for the time being. He's put in hard work in dedication (Something all the Rampage fan base needs to have hammered into their thick skulls about their fallen hero).
Heath Herring is kept in the ufc to keep him from being a commodity else where. Honestly I had you confused as being a knowledgeable mma fan at some point, I have no idea how.
I hate Liddel but did you really need to list Liddel? Was this some grand focal point that needed your special precious attention?
Most Liddel fans (even the hard core ones) get the picture. If the point of your list is to see people get fired so they can fight else were, you should have stated that right off the bat.
Vera was a sound pic, but again he'd be a great gain for another company after all the work the ufc put into him. Mr. White is working extra hard right now to give Strike Force 0000000000000000000.
Hell why didn't you mention Jardine seeing as how you were gonna mention Liddel?
Can't argue Phil Baroni, I'd love to but it's a piss poor argument.
And what is this universal hatred for James Mc Sweeny. It's in every Forum bored I go to.
He's an arrogant prick, yeah he's British. Duh. Most British fighters are huge pricks.
And no I don't feel I'm dangerously stereotyping an entire people because of a few bad apples, that's how it seems.
Daily-Douche
Bisping-Douche
Hardy-douche
Most of the guys on Cage Rage-douches.
Congratulations this is the most ass tastic, self masturbating column sense Mike Huckaby wrote here.
