The Ultimate Writer 08.30.10: Arianny in Playboy, UFC 118 in Review, Kimbo to Boxing, More
Posted by Dustin James on 08.30.2010
The Ultimate Writer returns with discussion of Arianny posing for Playboy, Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II, all of the action from UFC 118, Kimbo Slice leaving MMA for boxing, the latest on DREAM.16 and much more!
Welcome to the first edition of "The Ultimate Writer" in over a year and a half! Some of you may know me already, but for those of you who don't, my name is Dustin James. I'm a 29-year old hardcore MMA fan who has been writing about MMA for over three years now and after much debate I finally decided to dust this sucker off for 411mania. I retired "The Ultimate Writer" a few years ago but now that the beloved Jeremy Lambert is leaving 411mania, I had to break it out to try and continue the legacy that man has left behind here. You can read more about Lambert's departure in his latest "Cardio Freak" news report as I'm sure he's got a heart-filled goodbye for all of you. I'm personally going to miss Jeremy as he was one of my favorite writers to not only read on 411, but also chat MMA with on Twitter. Plus, he has yet to unfollow me even though I post the most retarded shit sometimes...now THAT's a friendship. But enough about Jeremy, this is my column and we need to move on!
Earlier this week, I was ecstatic when I went to check my mail and saw that the wonderful folks at GameFly had decided to send me "Mafia II" the day after it was released! I gotta say, I'm having a wonderful time living the life of a mobster this time around. Unlike the movies, video game sequels are generally supposed to be WAY better and Mafia succeeds in that department. If you like games like GTA, Saint's Row, The Godfather, etc...than Mafia II is definitely up your alley. I have been splitting time between Mafia and Madden 11 where I'm trying to build the Kansas City Chiefs into a dynasty. It's not as hard as you would think considering the Chiefs have a lot of young talent that develops well over the years. It's too bad stuff like that doesn't happen in real life...right Greg Oden?
Anyway, you came here for some MMA talk didn't you?
So........
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!
UFC 118 Thoughts
- Nate Diaz def. Marcus Davis via third-round submission - This fight almost went exactly like I thought it would. I expected Diaz to stand up with Davis and bang with him for awhile. Diaz actually did extremely well against a former professional boxer. He even opened up a nice cut on Davis' eye that was almost as bad as the one John Howard got a few weeks back. After beating on Davis for awhile, Diaz FINALLY secured the takedown (which I was yelling for him to do from the start) and sinked in the guillotine choke with just under a minute left in the fight. Davis has now lost 3 out of his last 4 UFC fights and is definitely in danger of being cut. As for Diaz, he is now 2-0 in the welterweight division and one more victory over a top contender could catapult him into a title shot sometime next year. Will we see a potential GSP vs. Nate Diaz fight next year? It's highly possible.....
Gray Maynard def. Kenny Florian via unanimous-decision - I think I can speak for the world when I say that Gray Maynard came out and did exactly what he had to do to defeat Florian. I have been saying for years that Maynard is one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC and the man is FINALLY getting his long-awaited title shot. Some people hate the way that Maynard fights (I was calling him "Jon Fitch-lite" during the fight) but it gets the job done and a win is a win in MMA. With this win, Maynard earned a title shot against Frankie Edgar in the future. As most people know, Maynard defeated Edgar back in 2008 via unanimous-decision. Has Edgar improved enough to be able to stuff Maynard's take downs and keep the fight on the feet where Edgar has the clear advantage? It's really going to be interesting to see how much Edgar has improved because as of right now....he's the top lightweight in MMA and he needs to prove he is by defeating the only man who's ever beat him. I'd look for the Maynard/Edgar fight to happen at the New Year's Eve show in December, but my name isn't Joe Silva and I don't call the shots....
Demian Maia def. Mario Miranda via unanimous-decision - To no one's surprise, Maia took Miranda on the ground and controlled the fight where he is most comfortable. I know, shocking isn't it? NEXT......
Randy Couture def. James Toney via first-round submission - This is the fight I was dying to see and let's just say I wasn't disappointed with the outcome at all. Couture came out and did exactly what he had to do to show Toney that there was no spot for him in the wonderful world of MMA. Toney talks a good game, but when it comes down to it, the man is so one-dimensional that the only people he has a chance of beating in MMA are people who are predominately strikers (hello Drew McFedries!). Unfortunately we will never get that chances as Toney has officially be shown the door by the UFC. Couture on the other hand, showed the world why he is one of the most dangerous guys on the planet and not even a professional boxer stands a chance against him. Next up for Couture? Perhaps a fight with GOD himself just to see who's more bad ass?.....
Frankie Edgar def. B.J. Penn via unanimous decision - You have to give credit where credit is due to Frankie Edgar. While many people were skeptical about Edgar winning the first fight, he came out and totally showed the world that he's currently a better fighter than Penn is. Watching Penn fight this sort of fight is frustrating. You know the man is one of the most talented fighters on the planet, yet here he is content with standing up with Edgar and getting picked apart on the feet. I honestly don't know where Penn goes from here. Does he stay in the lightweight division and try to earn another title shot, or does he move up to welterweight and try for that title again? He's definitely in a tough predicament considering he's lost to both the welterweight champion and the lightweight champion on two separate occasions now. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with his future in the next few months. As for Edgar, he proved to the world that he's no slouch and now he gets to rematch the only man that's ever beat him, Gray Maynard, in a title fight that will definitely need another great fight on the card in order to help sell the show. I'll be the first to tell you that I'm a big fan of both Maynard and Edgar, but those two aren't selling a PPV. In MMA, a lot of the hype surrounding a fight has to do with the combatants charisma and personality to sell the show. Unfortunately, Edgar and Maynard both have the personalities of a wet mop and the hype for the show will be nonexistent. Oh well, I'm sure the UFC has a few tricks up there sleeves like they usually do.....
Closing Analysis: In closing, I thought UFC 118 was a decent show. You had some entertaining fights in Diaz/Davis, Couture/Toney, and Penn/Edgar. While some of the outcomes weren't what we were hoping for, in the end you can't really complain all that much about this show. It wasn't exactly the FANTASTIC show that UFC 117 and 116 were, but not every PPV is going to be. The UFC is on a roll right now and the only thing that can kill their momentum would be to have a show that's main evented by Frank Mir and Mirko "Cro Cop". Oh wait.....

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II...activate Sonnen's mouth NOW~!
Poor Chael Sonnen and his horrible submission defense....
DA DA DA DA! Ladies and gentlemen, it looks as though Dana White may have settled on just who Anderson Silva will be facing in his next title defense. And it's none other than this guy....
OK, OK...it's not that guy. That guy actually looks like he needs another drink instead of a title shot. No, instead Silva will likely be re-matching the guy who just beat his ass for four and a half rounds before Silva somehow slipped on a magical submission to end the fight. That's right. Silva will likely face off against Chael "Mouth" Sonnen sometime in early 2011. I can't express how happy I'm to see this rematch. Their first encounter was one of the best fights I had ever seen. I can't remember being that emotional watching an MMA fight in along time. For four and a half rounds, I was cursing Sonnen's name as well as wondering what the hell was going on exactly with Anderson Silva. I had yet to see anyone in the UFC manhandle Silva the way that Sonnen did. If it wasn't for that slick "armbar/triangle choke" that Silva sank in, Sonnen would be the UFC middleweight champion and I'm sure a statue of the guy would have been built somewhere in West Linn, Oregon. Well, it looks like Sonnen will get another chance next year.
Some people are not happy with this decision as they feel that Sonnen shouldn't get an instant rematch and to you people...I say...SHUT THE HELL UP! Instant rematches are needed sometime in MMA. When a fight is either an extremely close decision (such as B.J. Penn/Frankie Edgar I) or if the majority of the public thinks a fighter may have just gotten a little lucky (such as Matt Serra vs. GSP I), then of COURSE an instant rematch is needed. A lot of people believe that Silva got lucky with that submission and that Sonnen would own his ass if the two were to square off again. Well, let's see it happen! To me, this fight is the most intriguing fight the UFC can give Silva right now in the middleweight division. Why should they give Vitor Belfort a title shot when he has yet to even win a middleweight fight in the UFC? I happen to be one of those people who believes that Yushin Okami is long overdue for a title shot, but let's face it...that PPV isn't going to sell for shit and would likely have to feature an even bigger fight as the main event in order to pump up the PPV buys. The best thing for the UFC to do right now is to give Sonnen a rematch with Silva because their "feud" is one of the hottest things going right now. If you disagree with me, you just don't know what you are talking about, sorry to say.....
Kimbo Slice leaves MMA....for boxing.
If boxing doesn't work out, Kimbo can always go back to his first job in construction.....
In what was probably the funniest piece of news I have read in awhile, former EliteXC and UFC star Kimbo Slice will be leaving MMA and will be pursuing a career in professional boxing. Once I finally finished laughing from this hilarious piece of news, I started thinking about how it would be even FUNNIER watching Slice get KTFO on a boxing PPV. Why do I think this piece of news is hilarious? Well, just look at KIMBO! He's like 55 years old, has piss poor cardio, and got knocked out by SETH PETRUZELLI. If you even try to tell me that Kimbo has a better chance at making it in boxing, than I will ask you to quickly hand over your crack pipe. Slice's best shot at "making it" in professional fighting was actually in MMA in my opinion. He's never going to be good enough on his feet to knock out a highly trained boxer. Hell, his best chance at knocking someone out would be against a piss poor MMA fighter (HI TANK ABBOT!). If you remember, Slice was slowly improving his ground game and while he was never going to be Brock Lesnar, he still had a great chance at surprising a few of his opponents in the future. Instead, we all get to see Slice reunite with Gary Shaw (LOL) and become a victim of what I'm sure will be a "Sportscenter Top 10" KO real soon. Kimbo, you need to fire your career advisor quickly. That dude just screwed you over big-time. Good luck in boxing...you are definitely going to need it.
Vitor Belfort vs. Yushin Okami to headline UFC 122
Vitor Belfort watches his title fight float away.....
For the longest time, Vitor Belfort was a man without a fight. He was originally scheduled to face off against the winner of the Chael Sonnen/Anderson Silva fight that went down at UFC 117, but that fight was so close that the UFC decided to throw together an instant rematch. This news meant that Belfort wasn't getting his title shot anytime soon and needed to start looking for a new opponent. People started throwing out names left and right of guys they wanted to see Belfort square off against. Some people wanted to see him fight Yushin Okami while some people wanted to see him fight Chris Leben. Others wanted to see him rematch Wanderlei Silva and some people were even begging to see him square off against the cast of The Expendables. Either way, it looks as though Belfort has finally got his man! According to Dave Meltzer, Belfort will be facing Yushin Okami in the main event of UFC 122 in November. The winner of that fight is expected to be named the #1 contender to the UFC middleweight title and will face the winner of Sonnen/Silva II sometime next year. A lot of people were actually disappointed in the fact that Okami is in a #1 contender fight, which I don't understand at all. Okami probably should have gotten a title shot in the UFC ALONG time ago. Not only has the man been pretty dominant in the UFC, but he's also the last man to beat Anderson Silva. Sure, it was a DQ win, but a win is a win in MMA. I don't personally think a Belfort/Okami fight is going to sell a lot of PPV's, which doesn't matter here because UFC 122 is currently rumored to be a SPIKE TV show. Throwing a PPV on SPIKE TV is usually the UFC's way of saying "Ya, this show probably won't be pretty good, so we shouldn't charge $50 for it". The funny thing is, most of the time the SPIKE TV shows end up being awesome. In the end though, it doesn't matter. Even if the show is on SPIKE TV, I will still have my friends come over and watch it and charge them $10 a person for the PPV. Who doesn't love screwing over their friends for cash?
Arianny Celeste to appear in Playboy
Hmmm, why yes. I will take two to go please.....
When the news was announced last week that UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste was going to appear in Playboy, Internet nerds all around the world soiled their drawers in unison. FINALLY, their MMA dream girl was going to get naked for the world to see! Do I really need to say anymore? I mean...just look at her!!!....
OK, I don't know how that last one got in there...
All The Other Stuff: Once UFC 118 was over, UFC President Dana White confirmed that the UFC is done with boxers and James Toney would not be returning to the UFC....White also mentioned that he's not opposed to a Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva fight in the future. He thinks both men need to clear out their respective divisions before a dream fight is even thought of....Lightweights Thiago Tavares and UFC newcomer Pat Audinwood will square off on the prelim card of UFC 119 in a fight that four people want to see....UFC lightweight Spencer Fisher was arrested earlier this week on charges of "interfering with an official's duties". The UFC vet had better get his head on straight as he has a fight coming up at UFC 120 and if he loses, that will be his third fight in a row he's lost and will likely be cut.....Heavyweight Todd Duffee was forced to pull out of his UFC 121 bout against Jon Madsen with a knee injury. MMA veteran Gilbert Yvel has been announced as his replacement....In news that literally SHOCKED me at least, UFC middleweight Ed Herman made the news this last week after he announced he was leaving Team Quest to start up his own camp. This usually wouldn't have been major news, but Herman orally blasted Team Quest and Matt Lindland on his way out. While I'm a huge fan of both Herman and Team Quest, I'm totally on Herman's side here. Hopefully everything goes well for him in his new gym....
Strikeforce
"King Mo" to undergo surgery for torn ACL; expected to miss up to nine months
A few more losses and "King Mo" may be on the corner with this sign....
In what is absolutely horrible news for both "King Mo" and Strikeforce, it was announced earlier this week that the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion will undergo surgery for a torn ACL and is expected to miss up to nine months of action. Man, it's been a real rough couple of weeks for Lawal. Not only did he lose both his first professional fight and his Strikeforce title, but now he has to miss a stupid amount of time to recover from a horrible injury. Lawal is one of those guys who is young and really wants to make a name for himself in the MMA world as quick as possible. He has been vocal in the past about his desire to become a professional wrestler once his fighting days are over (basically, the opposite of what Brock Lesnar did) and trust me when I say...Lawal would be one BAD ASS dude in the WWE. This injury is a huge detriment to Lawal's MMA career. His name is pretty hot right now and chances are that Strikeforce would give him a rematch against "Feijao" soon. Now, Lawal has to sit back for nine months and wait until he can even start training again. What it all boils down to is, it might be a whole year before we see some "King Mo" action. That means we are going to be forced to sit back and listen to Lawal's rants on Twitter about how he could beat "Rampage" Jackson and how he is still the greatest fighter on the planet even though he just lost. Oh well, I personally love Lawal's rants and I'm sure we will get a ton more considering he's going to be a gimp for the next few months. Hurry up and get better "King Mo", Strikeforce needs you.
Nick Diaz vs. KJ Noons rematch is SET!....
C'mon now, that cuts not THAT bad.....
After years of asking for it, Nick Diaz finally gets his long awaited rematch against K.J. Noons. While it won't exactly be for the EliteXC lightweight title like Diaz had originally hoped, it is going to be a "revenge" fight for Diaz. Had it not been for that nasty cut on Diaz's eye that forced the doctor to stop the fight, Diaz would be on a win streak that would be comparable to Anderson Silva's. Had it not been for this loss against Noons, Diaz's last loss would have been way back at UFC 59 against Sean Sherk back in 2006. Since then, Diaz has pulled off wins against Josh Neer, Gleison Tibau, Frank Shamrock, Scott Smith, Hayato Sakurai, Marius Zaromskis, and even submitted Takanori Gomi with a gogoplata in a fight that was later declared a "no contest" due to Diaz failing a drug test. Noons on the other hand hasn't lost since that fluke loss to "Crazy Horse" back in 2007. His win streak doesn't really include a huge list of named guys, but it does include that one important win over Diaz. Personally, I'm really psyched to see this fight. Diaz is one of my favorite fighters right now because the man is not only an awesome fighter, but he's entertaining as hell to watch just for his shit talking. This rematch with Noons is three years in the making and you would have to be retarded to not think that Diaz is going to be in full on shit talking mode. Let's just hope that Strikeforce has the right amount of security around the cage in case the Cesar Gracie camp decides to hold some "extra-curricular" activities after the fight. What's the over/under on Jason "Mayhem" Miller charging the cage and challenging Diaz after he whoops Noons? I'd pay big money to see that happen....
All The Other Stuff: More drama went down with the whole Alistair Overeem/Fedor Emelianenko/Fabricio Werdum love triangle. I'm so sick of hearing about this. Can we just name a title fight yet Strikeforce? You're killing me Smalls.....Tim Kennedy thinks he won the title fight between him and "Jacare" Souza at Strikeforce: Houston last weekend. He has challenged "Jacare" to a rematch and since it's Strikeforce, he will get one....Everyone was in an uproar last week about Muhammad Lawal and K.J. Noons using bottled oxygen at the Strikeforce: Houston show. Great, now we have fighters using bottled oxygen. What's next? Is Roy Nelson's corner going to pump him up with whipped cream in between rounds?.....
Japan
DREAM.16 is picking up steam!
"Mayhem" Miller reacts to the news that the horrible "Bully Beatdown" got picked up for another season....
It looks as though Jason "Mayhem" Miller finally got his next opponent, and it's not exactly who he was hoping to face. Instead of facing Nick Diaz (according to Miller, Diaz is afraid to fight him), Miller will be facing Japanese MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba in what will likely be the main event of DREAM.16 on September 25. While I would personally loved to have seen Miller face off against one of the men he brawled with on CBS, Sakuraba will have to do for now. If Miller drops this fight to "The Gracie Hunter" than that will be a huge set-back for the host of MTV's "Bully Beatdown" (have I mentioned how stupid of a show that is yet?). Miller has a great chance at squaring off in a rematch against Strikeforce middleweight champion "Jacare" Souza soon, but a loss to the "grandpa of Japanese MMA" would really deter those title plans for Strikeforce. BWAHAHAHA! OK, OK...you got me. I just remembered that Strikeforce would give a title shot to a fucking moose if it could throw a left hook. Either way, Miller should get the win here and then forget about Nick Diaz and focus on "Jacare". Quit picking on the little guys "Mayhem", ya bully.
Also announced for DREAM.16 were a DREAM light heavyweight title fight between Gegard Mousasi and some dude who has no chance in hell. Joe Warren is also set to step in and face Michihiro Omigawa, which is odd considering Warren will be fighting for the Bellator lightweight title on September 2. I guess he doesn't expect to get too beaten up when he faces Joe Soto in a few weeks. Either way, DREAM.16 is shaping up to be a nice little card which of course I will have to miss again considering I don't have HDNet (THANK YOU AGAIN COMCAST).
All The Other Good Stuff: Sengoku announced that SRC 15 will take place on October 30 and will feature Takuya Wada vs. Keita Nakamura, Taisuke Okuno vs. Yasubey Enomoto as well as the quarterfinal of 20-man bantamweight tournament.....

Fight of the Week!
If I have to explain to you what "fight of the week" is, than please grab a pencil and stick it in your neck for the benefit of society....
Since this is the first week back for "The Ultimate Writer", I decided I would bless you guys with one of my personal favorite finishes of all-time. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Anderson Silva at his most dangerous....
Random Top 5 List Time!
Here you will see a random top 5 list put together by yours truly. It may be Top 5 submission fighters, Top 5 stand-up fighters, or hell, even the Top 5 ways that Anderson Silva could kill you. Seriously, don't mess with that man. He's dangerous.
My Top 5 Favorite Fighters At The Moment: The title alone is pretty self-explanatory....
ARE YOU READY?
5. Jon Jones - With every fight he has, Jones moves higher and higher up the list of my favorite fighters to watch. I LOVE watching Jones fight at the moment. The dude seems possessed as soon as the bell rings and he also happens to be one of the guys who will regularly comment back to you on Twitter. That's just how cool of a guy "Bones" Jones is....
4. B.J. Penn - I'm a lifelong fan of Penn's and nothing would ever turn me against him. He could probably kill one of my kids and I would still be a fan, know what I'm saying? OK RELAX....I don't have any kids, sheesh.
3. Brock Lesnar - I have been a huge fan of Brock Lesnar since his WWE days and I'm absolutely thrilled that the man has become one of the biggest names in MMA. I love watching Lesnar fight just due to the whole mystique, plus he goes out and sells his ass off and forces most people to cheer against him. I also happen to be co-captain of TEAM BROCK SMASH! We are a devoted fan base of Lesnar fans going against those damn TEAM CAIN~TRAIN members who are thinking Velasquez is going to become the new heavyweight champ when the two square off. Either way, I can't wait for that fight much like I can't wait for the majority of Lesnar's fights....
2. Anderson Silva - I'm one of those guys who just so happens to LOVE watching Anderson Silva fight. In my opinion, the man can do no wrong. I'm the guy who defended his actions when he fought Demian Maia for crying out loud! You could put Silva in the Octagon against a rock and there's a great chance I would be excited to see it. WAR SILVA BITCHES~!
1. Randy Couture - If you know me, than you know how big of a Randy Couture homer I'am. My love for Couture only grew following his UFC 118 beat down of James Toney. This man can do no wrong right now.....
My top 5 MMA Rankings:
These are my current top 5 MMA rankings! I know 411mania.com has their own rankings as a collective unit, but I figured I would list mine for you guys to tear apart each week....
1. Georges St. Pierre
2. Jon Fitch
3. Josh Koscheck
4. Nick Diaz
5. Thiago Alves
Lightweight:
1. Frankie Edgar
2. Gray Maynard
3. B.J. Penn
4. Gilbert Melendez
5. Eddie Alvarez
And that's it for me this week. Make sure you follow me on Twitter for all sorts of good MMA, NBA, NFL, and other random crap talk. Trust me, I won't let you down.
All of 411's zones are also on Twitter, so make sure you check it out.....
"I have been a huge fan of Brock Lesnar since his WWE days and I'm absolutely thrilled that the man has become one of the biggest names in MMA."
I know it is your opinion and all, but guess what? Lesnar is THE biggest name in the sport right now. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

IF I said GSP is a bigger MMA star, AND you disagreed, you'd be wrong, BUT you'd still have Brock's sweaty nutsack to hang onto. Got all 3 in there

The instant rematch still sucks.
It's not getting 'lucky' when Sonnen got subbed the same way he did more than five years ago by Forrest Griffin...and he still couldn't beat a man with a busted rib.
Yeah, I'll take the fresh matchup any day of the week. Not to mention, they promised Vitor a title shot and to retract it now is just seedy to me.

Let me guess, you can get better right??? Dream on fella, using your wank flannel to knock one off to pictures of Stacey Dash in your step dads basement doesn't count!!!!!

Sadly being in playboy no longer means anything because of their "Non-Nude" Pictorials... See Olivia Munn, Heidi Montag, etc.

the instant rematch is BS. we all knew that Sonnen is gonna either get KO'd or subbed on the ground and there he is, subbed on the ground. he should fight Belfort for a chance at another crack at Silva, because that could save him embarassment of history repeating itself and making him look really really dumb. Meanwhile, Silva just should leave the middleweight division and fight some light heavies. I'd love to see Silva vs Couture.
