The Ultimate Writer 09.06.10: Josh Koscheck vs. Yves Lavigne, Karo Returns to the UFC, Bob Ryan is a Moron, More
Posted by Dustin James on 09.06.2010
The Ultimate Writer returns with discussion of Josh Koscheck's battle with Yves Lavigne, the troubled Karo Parisyan returning to the UFC, sports writer Bob Ryan's awful take on MMA, the horrible Strikeforce heavyweight title picture and much more!
Welcome back to "THE ULTIMATE WRITER"! Hopefully you know me by now. My name is Dustin James of course and I'm here every week to bring you the best news, views, and stupid humor on the latest subjects of MMA. The return of "TUW" last week was HUGE! It was so huge in fact, that "Mayor" Joe Quimby officially made August 30 "Ultimate Writer Day". So next year on August 30, everyone gets to do what I would usually do for a holiday which is get extremely drunk, say a bunch of stupid shit that you will regret later, and then cry yourself to sleep while sucking your thumb. Sounds like a lot of fun, don't it?
As most of you know, this last weekend was officially the KICK OFF of college football! Some of you may remember that I'm an incredibly huge of the Oregon Ducks. Well, this weekend I had the privilege of going down to Eugene and watching the DUCKS dominate New Mexico 72-0! I seriously sat down to watch the football game and not even 25 minutes later, the Ducks were up 42-0! It was so insane and one-sided that my buddy and I decided instead to focus on getting drunk rather than watch the remainder of the game. That plan went as well as it sounds as I don't remember anything that happened after 2:00 PM, but that's what happens when you have Coors Light for breakfast...isn't it?
Before we get to the news, I must suggest that you guys follow the latest 411 writer to join us over on Twitter. That's right folks! 411's own Samer Kadi has finally made the jump to Twitter! You can follow the guy by clicking here. Samer isn't very creative as it shows in his "Twitter" name. Instead of just using "Samer Kadi", he had to throw the "MMA" on the end of it...you know...just so you don't confuse him with the OTHER Samer Kadi. Either way, welcome aboard Samer......
Anyway, you came here for some MMA talk didn't you?
Soooooooooo.........
THIS IS.....

Josh Koscheck vs. Yves Lavigne...it's Canada vs. the US!
Josh Koscheck in Bob Ross's body still freaks me the hell out....
Some interesting shit definitely hit the fan earlier this week when it was revealed that MMA official Yves Lavigne (he of French-Canadian descent mind you) supposedly made some harsh comments directed towards the #1 contender to the UFC welterweight title, Josh Koscheck. Lavigne supposedly said that in Koscheck's last fight (against Paul Daley), Koscheck was afraid to strike with Daley and insisted on just holding Daley on the ground. This resulted in the fans raining down "boos" on Koscheck and Daley sucker-punching him after the bell. However, that wasn't all Lavigne "supposedly" said. He also went on to state that GSP will dominate Koscheck just like he did in the first fight and that his striking is much-improved. He expects Koscheck to try and knock GSP out like Serra did, but believes Koscheck will ultimately fail. He then expects GSP to go on to face Jon Fitch than the winner of the Shields/Kampmann fight before deciding on a possible match-up with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Now, it's widely rumored that this interview with Lavigne isn't real, but of course, that could be Lavigne doing the ultimate case of backtracking because now he realizes those comments could possibly get him in trouble. Either way, if Lavigne really did make these comments, the man is truly an idiot. It's known throughout all major sports that officials should never show any kind of bias towards an athlete or a team. Even if Lavigne does truly feel this way about Koscheck, he needs to keep his mouth shut and just let GSP's fist....errrr wrestling.....doing the talking. He doesn't do himself any kind of favors by opening his mouth and forcing the UFC to monitor the fights Lavigne refs better to make sure he's not favoring anyone else.
Now, did you all expect this to happen and not get a response from Josh Koscheck? If that's the case, you need to stab yourself in the eye with a safety pin....
"UFC referee, Yves Lavigne is clearly not suited to be a referee after his rant of personal attacks and opinions on me as a fighter. It's supposed to be his job to look at a fight unbiased, but how can anyone trust this guy to fairly referee any fight ever again after his comments? It's scary to think this guy has been calling fights in the octagon for this long. It's very fair to say Mr. Lavigne will never ref one of my fights again. I would never put all my hard work as a fighter or my livelihood in the hands of this ref. The (UFC) and the commission would be irresponsible to let him continue his job- any call this guy makes would have to be questioned. You call MMA a professional sport? Well, professional starts at the top. Never would an NFL, NBA or other major sports official state there personal opinions publicly about a player and keep their job. I now question every call Yves has ever made as a referee. Hopefully no fighter ever has to step into a fight with Yves Lavigne as referee. Better get that resume ready Lavigne….."
As I said previously, if Lavigne really did make those statements, than Koscheck is 90% in the right here. While I don't totally agree that Lavigne should NEVER be allowed to officiate another MMA bout, I don't believe the man should be allowed to officiate a Josh Koscheck or GSP fight ever again if this interview is indeed real. It would be like the Colts getting ready to face the Bears in the Super Bowl, and the head ref does an interview during Super Bowl week where he states that he would like to see Peyton Manning get his ACL torn during the game. Do you think the NFL wouldn't go into panic mode and make sure that guy never refs an Indy game again? You bet your ass they would! MMA officials are suppose to be professional at all times and if Lavigne really did do this interview, he should publicly come out and apologize to Mr. Koscheck. However, if Lavigne is innocent and this story is all made up....then just ignore everything I just said and go on with your day!
In an effort to make weight, Karo becomes the first fighter to try and shit himself while on the scale....
OK everyone, say it with me now. UGGGHHHHHHH~! That was my initial reaction when I heard the news that Dana White was giving former UFC welterweight title contender Karo Parisyan another chance in the UFC. What the hell is the chrome dome thinking? Did he not learn a big enough lesson the first few times Karo screwed the UFC? And when I say "screwed" the UFC, I mean SCREWED the UFC! Not only did Karo fail a post-fight drug test following his UFC 94 victory over Dong Hyun Kim (a victory that was later turned to a "no contest"), but the man really screwed the UFC when he pulled out of his fight against Dustin Hazelett at UFC 106 just DAYS before the fight was set to go down (this wasn't the first time Karo did that either...). This forced UFC President Dana White to tweet that Karo would "not be fighting Saturday or ever again in the UFC!!" and THAT my friends is a direct quote from the UFC head honcho himself. However, Dana White showed that he will go back on his word if a fighter pressures him enough.
Supposedly, Karo has been asking for his job back in the UFC for sometime now and it looks like White finally caved. White says that he's willing to give Karo one more chance, but if Parisyan screws him...he's never allowed back in the UFC (not even if he went on to defeat 3 lions, 2 tigers, and Fedor Emelianenko ALL AT ONCE!). The UFC is making a huge mistake here in my opinion. Not only is Karo Parisyan one of the most boring fighters to watch in MMA, but the guy has some serious mental issues going on. He's got some serious anxiety issues which have forced him to pull out of scheduled fights just days before they are set to go down (much like he did with the scheduled fight against Dustin Hazelett). Not only that, but Karo also has a history of painkiller abuse due to past injuries. Now, I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but if you are a former addict who is battling a former addiction to pain killers...perhaps it's not a good idea to put your body through the torture of another MMA fight? Maybe the best idea would be for you to call it quits before you end up like half the pro wrestlers do? You know...dead before you reach the age of 40. I'm just looking out for the best interest of Karo Parisyan folks. That, and I REALLY don't care to see the guy fight again in the UFC. Here's to hoping he pulls out of the fight just days before it happens just so we can see a DANA WHITE EXPLOSION! Don't let us down Karo~!
Bob Ryan is a jackass.....
Replace the book with a bucket of KFC chicken and Ryan would look like Col. Sanders.....
Perhaps nothing pisses me off more than mainstream sports journalists who are so biased and retarded in their reporting that they just don't seem to "get" MMA. While some journalists have come around over time (John Canzano of The Oregonian), there are some "old men" who try their best to report on our wonderful sport, but most of the time they come across as huge idiots...much like Bob Ryan did this past week. In his latest jewel in the Boston Globe, Ryan wrote about the UFC 118 show that went down in Boston last weekend. Ryan's report was so horribly wrong that I'm actually surprised the Globe decided to print such trash. Ryan wrote in his column that the fans in attendance didn't come to see "wrestling" and basically booed anytime the fight hit the ground. UMMMMM WRONG! I know Ryan is like 84-years old and is a little hard on hearing, but I'm pretty sure some of the loudest POPS of the night went down when Joe Lauzon was beating the crap out of Gabe Ruediger (on the ground mind you) and when Randy Couture went for the take down on James Toney and submitted him with an arm-triangle. The crowd was MUCH louder for those two fights than they were for the Marcus Davis/Nate Diaz fight that was mainly a stand-up affair that "boxing fans" would usually enjoy.
The newspaper industry is hurting right now. The Internet has taken away a lot of the audience that use to get up in the morning with a cup of coffee in hand, grab the paper, and sit down at their kitchen table in a robe to read the latest headlines. Now, all you have to do is wake up, get your cup of coffee and load up your computer. Well, the newspaper industry isn't doing themselves ANY kind of favors by having a fossil like Bob Ryan trying to report on "new" sports. Ryan may be a legend in the Boston-area, but his name is meaningless anywhere else. The man definitely isn't doing himself any favors by trying to report on a "new" sport that he just doesn't understand. I'll finish this story off with perhaps the worst quote Ryan has ever wrote....
"After watching an evening of UFC up close and personal, I came away with a better appreciation for boxing."
The reason you say that Ryan, is because you are old and bitter and refuse to accept anything "new" into your life. You are like the old people who still use video tapes to record TV shows on TV because you just don't "understand the concept" of a DVR. Do us all a favor and stop writing about sports outside of Boston and go back to making that delicious popcorn everyone loves. OK Orville?....
All The Other Stuff: UFC President Dana White recently revealed that if James Toney had defeated Randy Couture at UFC 118 last week, Toney's next opponent would have been up-and-coming MMA sensation Jon "Bones" Jones. However, since Toney lost, he's now officially out of the UFC for good....The latest rumor is that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will defend his UFC light heavyweight title in March against Rashad Evans. It all depends on how quickly Rua heals from his injury.....The UFC was trying to put together an Evans vs. Couture fight for UFC 122, but it looks as though Evans isn't interested in fighting until his title fight with Rua.....It's looking more and more like the next victim opponent for "Bones" Jones will be the winner of the Ryan Bader vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira later this month.....Roy Nelson has been pushing hard for a fight against Shane Carwin. He's even already got a catchphrase for the fight if it does go down, "I may eat but I don't cheat". You gotta love Nelson's humor.....For those of you wondering when "Mr Wonderful" Phil Davis will be returning to the UFC. It's looking like he will face off against Tim Boetsch at UFC 123.....One of the worst color commentators in MMA will be facing off against Igor Pokrajac at "The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale" later this year. Can you guess who I'm talking about? Well, if you said, Stephan Bonnar then quickly buy yourself a bag of pretzel M&M's on me.....Mike Pierce's viral campaign for a fight against Thiago Alves later this year didn't really work in Pierce's favor. Instead, it's looking like Alves will face off against John Howard at UFC 124 in a fight that is a MUST-WIN for Alves. A loss would make it his third loss in a row and he could find himself released by the UFC.....
Strikeforce
Plenty of drama in Strikeforce's heavyweight division.....
Believe me Alistair, I made the same face after hearing about all this crap....
In news that will absolutely make your eyes spin, Strikeforce's heavyweight division is currently in a state of complete shit due to horrible managing and the fact that the promotion is quickly becoming the laughing stock of the MMA world. Seriously, sit yourself down for this story. Earlier this week, Strikeforce officials went to Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva to see if he would be interested in facing Fedor Emelianenko later this year. The very next day, Fedor's people sent out a press release asking for a fight with Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (even though they seemingly weren't interested in a fight with Overeem just weeks earlier). If that wasn't already complicated enough, Overeem's people seem to be more interested in a fight with Fabricio Werdum (even though Overeem has wanted a fight with Fedor for sometime now) more than Fedor. Ohhhh dear, I have gone cross-eyed. Let's see if we can sort this out a little bit, shall we? It appears as though Antonio Silva is interested in facing anyone Strikeforce throws at him. It seems Fedor is now interested in facing off against Overeem or a possible rematch with Werdum (Werdum is injured though and won't be fighting for sometime). And it also appears as though Overeem is more interested in facing Werdum than Fedor, even though he has wanted the Fedor fight for as long as anyone can remember. I think I speak for the entire MMA community when I ask....WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON RIGHT NOW STRIKEFORCE???
How about this? How about you book Overeem vs. Werdum (which is the fight that SHOULD happen considering Werdum more than earned a title shot against Overeem after upsetting Fedor earlier this year) for a title fight perhaps sometime next year? In the meantime, you can book Fedor vs. "Bigfoot" Silva in a #1 contender fight where the winner faces the winner of the Overeem/Werdum fight next year. Does that work and make everyone happy? Guess what, it doesn't matter if it makes everyone happy because this is what should happen! Strikeforce is slowly gaining a reputation as being a horribly mismanaged organization and the current state of crap that the heavyweight division is in plays a big part in that line of thinking. For too long, Strikeforce has let the inmates run the asylum and it's time for the management team to grow some balls. Who cares what fights the fighters want! Do you think the UFC sits back and let's the inmates run the asylum? Hell no. The only time the UFC schedules a fight that a fighter specifically asks for is if it makes sense for the company. Why? Because the company should always come first. Perhaps if Strikeforce started thinking more like the UFC, it would stop becoming the laughing stock of the MMA world. Can we just get Strikeforce to hire Gary Shaw so we can finally put this company out of it's misery? Say it with me now people. Strikeforce is a huge....
All The Other Stuff: The rematch between Nick Diaz and K.J. Noons in the main event of the October 9 Strikeforce "San Jose" show will be for Diaz's welterweight title. As most of you will remember, Diaz lost to Noons a few years back after the ref called the fight due to a cut suffered by Diaz. Diaz of course went on a RAMPAGE after the fight, but this was a little bit before his "jump the fighter once the fight is over" days....Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza is telling people he will defend his title for the first time at the October show. His opponent has yet to be determined, but since it is Strikeforce we are talking about, it will more than likely end up being me....
Bellator
Bellator 27 results....
Another week, another Bellator card....
Another week goes by and of course that means yet ANOTHER Bellator card is under wraps. By this time next year, I'll be giving you the results of Bellator 259 which I'm sure will be a fantastic card. Either way, here's the results (courtesy of 411's own Larry Csonka) of Bellator 27 which just so happened to feature one of the best comebacks we have seen this year thanks to the MAN-BEAST known as Joe Warren.....
MAIN CARD
~ Joe Warren def. Joe Soto via knockout (strikes) - Round 2, 0:33 (to become new featherweight champion)
~ Zach Makovsky def. Nick Mamalis via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)#
~ Ed West def. Bryan Goldsby via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)#
PRELIMINARY CARD RESULTS
~ Richard Odoms def. Dale Mitchell via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)*
~ Andrew Craig def. Rodrigo Pinheiro via TKO (doctor's stoppage due to cut) - Round 3, 2:53*
~ Andrew Chappelle def. Joe Christopher via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)*
~ Ulysses Gomez def. Travis Reddinger via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)#
~ Jon Kirk def. Shane Faulkner via TKO (strikes) - Round 3, 2:19
~ Steven Peterson def. Ernest De La Cruz via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Like I said above, the Warren/Soto title fight featured one of the best comebacks we have seen this year, and trust me when I say we have been EXTREMELY spoiled in that regard. Either way, congratulations Bellator on another successful card. Now, let's get to work on a better TV deal. Give the West Coast Bellator fans a little more love with something called a LIVE card! I know, the concept can be a little tricky Bellator, but I'm sure someday you will figure it out.
All The Other Good Stuff: Ya, there was nothing else going on in Bellator this week. Did you guys happen to catch Jersey Shore though? What an amazing show.....
Japan
FEG going out of business?....
FEG is "dream"ing of a time when things were better for Japanese MMA....
You ever get that weird French disease that results in you swearing you are seeing something you have already seen? That's what happened when my eyes caught glimpse of the latest story on the financial woes of the Fight Entertainment Groups. Just when it seemed like things couldn't get any worse for Japanese MMA, it's now looking like FEG will need some financial help by the end of the year or we could end up seeing the last of the good Japanese MMA promotions die (sorry Sengoku, but I did say GOOD) a slow death. It appears as though FEG is trying to raise between $230 million to $345 million to help further expand the brand into Asia and Europe by next year. Expanding the "DREAM" and K-1 brand is important in FEG's survival as the promotion is dying a slow death. They have had trouble paying the majority of their fighters in the past, which has forced a lot of their guys to look for work elsewhere (like the UFC or Strikeforce). As of right now, FEG only has more one show scheduled for this year before the big New Year's Eve show (and the rumor right now is, the NYE's show could potentially be the last show ran by FEG if their financial woes aren't solved), which is the DREAM.16 show on September 25. It's going to be interesting to see what happens after the DREAM.16 show later this month. Will FEG be able to pay off all their fighters on time? Will we ever see another FEG promoted show after this NYE? Is Japanese MMA slowly becoming extinct? Trust me when I say that all these questions will be answered by the end of 2010. If you ask me, we may be looking at the end of the last great Japanese MMA promotion...
All The Other Good Stuff: The DREAM.16 card scheduled to go down later this month is picking up a little more steam. Added to the card earlier this week was Shinya Aoki vs. UFC veteran Marcus Aurelio, Joachim Hansen vs. Hideo Tokoro and Takeshi Inoue vs. Kazuyuki Miyata. The card will also feature Gegard Mousasi vs. Tatsuya Mizuno for the DREAM light heavyweight title and Jason Miller vs. PRIDE legend Kazushi Sakuraba.....

Fight of the Week!
If I have to explain to you what "fight of the week" is, than please grab a pencil and stick it in your neck for the benefit of society....
If you missed this past week's "COMEBACK OF THE YEAR" nominee when Joe Warren faced off against Joe Soto on Bellator (and since Bellator's TV deal is extremely shitty, there's a good chance you did miss it...), have no fear! Here are the highlights in what is easily, my fight of the week.....
This week, I decided to have two "fights of the week" in honor of the CATFIGHT we saw on Jersey Shore this past week. Man, I love me some J~WOWW!!!.....
Random Top 5 List Time!
Here you will see a random top 5 list put together by yours truly. It may be Top 5 submission fighters, Top 5 stand-up fighters, or hell, even the Top 5 ways that Anderson Silva could kill you. Seriously, don't mess with that man. He's dangerous.
My Top 5 Most Missed 411 MMA Writers: I have been writing in 411's MMA zone for sometime now and I have seen A LOT of other writers pass through these doors. In honor of Jeremy Lambert leaving us last weekend, I decided to rank the top 5 writers I personally miss the most.....
ARE YOU READY?
5. Jeremy Lambert - Jeremy just left the website, so I don't miss him too badly right now. But 411 is definitely going to miss his "Cardio Freak" news report that became a staple of the site over the last few years. "The Ultimate Writer" wishes Lammy (that's his nickname so if you ever run across him on Twitter, make sure you call him it repeatedly) the best in his future endeavors....
4. Caleb Newby - I don't really miss "Newbs", I just wanted to see if anyone else remembers this guy? (KIDDING CALEB! I miss you like a fat kid misses the McRib!)......
3. Randy Harrison - Harrison's work can still be seen in 411's wrestling zone, but as for his MMA writing....only god knows where that's at. And when I say "only god knows where that's at", I truly mean that he's probably the only one that visits Harrison's site. (I lie, it's a fantastic website and Harrison does an excellent job...). Randy's a good dude and a great writer and I still miss reading "Whatever the hell his column was called".
2. Lotfi Sariahmed - Lotfi is one of the guys who left 411 and went on to do some pretty excellent things with his MMA writing career. For those of you who are unaware of what Lotfi does now a days, he currently resides over at Sherdog.com where he is apart of the Beatdown Radio Show. I really miss Lotfi's "Planet Tapout" columns that ran here on 411, but I'm glad to see the guy's doing excellent in his post-411 career. Oh yeah, here's a classic showdown of MMA FOF featuring ME vs. LOTFI!. A true classic indeed....
1. Adam Tool - I don't read a lot of columns here on 411 due to a lack of time, but one thing I always made time for was a column written by Adam Tool. Tool is a fantastic writer and a good dude. Whatever happened to him anyways?.....
My top 5 MMA Rankings:
These are my current top 5 MMA rankings! I know 411mania.com has their own rankings as a collective unit, but I figured I would list mine for you guys to tear apart each week....
1. Georges St. Pierre
2. Jon Fitch
3. Josh Koscheck
4. Nick Diaz
5. Thiago Alves
Lightweight:
1. Frankie Edgar
2. Gray Maynard
3. B.J. Penn
4. Gilbert Melendez
5. Eddie Alvarez
And that's it for me this week. Make sure you follow me on Twitter for all sorts of good MMA, NBA, NFL, and other random crap talk. Trust me, I won't let you down.
All of 411's zones are also on Twitter, so make sure you check it out.....
It seems a little harsh to criticise Lavigne for pointing out that Koscheck is a massive douche who just lays on people, but if impartiality involves not mentioning the blindingly obvious then I guess he should have kept his mouth shut. Like Kosheck doesn't.

As stupid as Paul Daley's actions were, maybe he CAN fight again in the UFC, given the example of Parisyan and all the dumbass things he's done - and yet he still gets another chance.

How is BJ penn still ranked in the top 5 when he lost 2 in a row?
I know some people will argue the first loss, but its still counts as a loss, and the second loss he got dominated in.

"In the meantime, you can book Fedor vs. "Bigfoot" Silva in a #1 contender fight where the winner faces the winner of the Overeem/Werdum fight next year. Does that work and make everyone happy?"
The only problem with that is this next fight is the last on Fedors contract. If he beats Silva, then wants to leave, then what? Have Silva fight for the title? If he beats Overeem he'll be interested in resigning as the champion, or his being the champ will add some leverage to his negotiating with UFC (if that ever happens again). If he fights Werdum, at least he gets his revenge. It took his management long enough to figure it out, but in the grand scheme of things, fightijg Silva helps Fedor none whatsoever at this point.

I'm not defending Parisyans' actions but, I wouldn't call the dude a boring fighter either, even in his losses the dude would put on a show. His fight with Diego is still one of the best matches of all time and he was beating Thiago Alves before that travesty of an ending. I know people have their opinions but to call Karo a boring fighter is just wrong in my book. I can't think of anyone else in the UFC that has pulled off as many impressive Judo throws to date, and who doesn't love Judo throws? That's like saying you don't like slams. This isn't coming from a Karo fan, this is coming from a MMA fan. His actions outside the ring are inexcusable but I could forgive him if he puts on another good show, only time will tell....

You know i used to defend karo when people said he was boring. But his last few fights in the UFC were pretty bad. After the sanchez fight it was all down hill for him.

Letting Fedor pick his fights just because its the last on his contract is about as backwards as it gets.

Rashad is a bitch. I hope Dana makes him fight Couture or takes away his title shot.

Spot on Ref, maybe he is better off as resume writer than on the ring. They better get they act straight.
