411's MMA Rankings 09.07.10: Lightweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 09.07.2010

Welcome to the first September edition of the weekly 411mania MMA Rankings in 2010. It just so happens this edition is following one of the more depressing performances we have seen of late. B.J. Penn could not muster up much of anything against the undisputed UFC champion, Frankie Edgar...again. Edgar has beaten Penn for the majority of ten rounds, a previously unfathomable accomplishment.

The question for Penn is what will he do next? Will he mix up his training habits, will he put on weight and move back to welterweight? Would he dare think about dropping weight? The only words from the Penn camp have been the former champion wants to return to the cage as soon as he can. I would assume he will stay at lightweight and try and build himself up again.

Meanwhile, the first UFC lightweight championship bout to not feature Penn since the summer of 2007 will be fought between Edgar and undefeated challenger Gray Maynard. Maynard is the only man to have defeated Edgar in an MMA fight and will try to do it again, using his aptly named bully wrestling style. Edgar has obviously improved over the past few years, but will he be able to use his speed and in-and-out striking style to perfection against Maynard like he did in the Penn fights?

The other depressing fact from the UFC's 155-pound division was the demise of Kenny Florian. Against Maynard, Florian had nothing. Ironically, the only lightweights to defeat Florian besides Penn, have been Maynard and Sean Sherk. Great wrestlers are apparently Ken-Flo's weakness. With those defeats on his resume, Florian may be facing the unfortunate "gatekeeper" status.

Elsewhere in the world, DREAM 16 will take place in just under three weeks in Japan. Shinya Aoki, coming off his big win over Tatsuya Kawajiri, will be taking on Marcus Aurelio. If it's been a while since you have heard his name, it's because he has not fought in a major promotion since last summer when he was kicked out of the UFC after a decision loss to Evan Dunham. Ironically, the last time Aurelio fought in Japan, he lost a rematch with Takanori Gomi by split decision (PRIDE Bushido 13, November 2006) for the PRIDE lightweight title. However, Aurelio's last big win was the first fight with Gomi in the spring of 2006. Since then, he has lost to Mitsuhiro Ishida, Gomi, Clay Guida, Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca and Dunham. Shinya Aoki will be the clear favorite in this fight.

Kenny Florian, the most talented gatekeeper ever.

Surprised Aussie George was ranked so low.

Glad to see Dunham cracking the top 10, he's a scrappy mofo.

Nice to see Dunham and Sotiropolous getting props

Sotiropoulos has 5 staight wins in the ufc! way to low for him

No real complaints but....I would like larry's reasoning for having kawajiri over aoki. Since aoki just beat him 2 months ago

pretty solid list.. but im not so sold on malendez as he hasnt fought the top ufc guys

People will complain about George being ranked so low, but he'll move up quickly- as soon as he beats a top 10.

Posted By: cyks (Guest)  on September 07, 2010 at 03:09 AM

Aoki should be higher. He's got one recent loss, and that's to the consensus #3 guy. I'd have him at #6, above KenFlo.

I'd also have Bendo above Florian, but that's debatable.

Yet another list that Brock Lesnar's name can't be printed on.

Way to stay consistent 411.

There should be a warning label on all your rankings that says "Rankings are not to be taken seriously".

Posted By: Guest#1320 (Guest)  on September 07, 2010 at 07:59 AM

I think Sotiropoulos (yes, I copy/pasted) should be ranked higher honestly, at least 11.
After Maynard fails to finish yet another fight, and most likely lose to an improved Edgar, I would give George a shot at the belt. Assuming he gets good competition and wins (maybe a George v KenFlo bout would be good).

Post of the year... not for the troll content, but for the thought of Brock at 155 Pounds is unbelievably amusing to me!

BJ Penn has 7 losses. More than anyone else on this list.

His failures amuse me.

Penn is way too high, hes looked like shit for a while. (no pun on the high thing)

-------------------------------------

But over half of those are against fighters above his weight class. The top fighter in the world, GSP at welterweight, Matt Hughes (once the top welterweight in the world), and Lyoto Machida. Hardly embarrassing. In fact, only two lightweights have ever beaten him. Edgar and Pulver.

Whoever thinks Frankie Edgar is the best lightweight must think Floyd Mayweather is the best boxer too. All Frankie fights to score points to win a decision thats all. Thats his whole gameplan. How many fights has he finished in his career. Its working for his career but i dont think its something that should be encouraged.

Posted By: Guest#0578 (Guest)  on September 07, 2010 at 12:41 PM

As someone who has killed your lightweight rankings in the past I think this may be your best list of them. I still think Aoki and Kawajiri are overrated but blah, blah, blah....

Here's my main problem with fighters who choose Strikeforce over the UFC. Melendez fought 4 and a half months ago and we still don't know their next scheduled fights. Unless one of them is hurt that is unacceptable. I know Melendez wanted Alvarez, which would be two striaght non SF fighters, but who is next now that Alvarez is fighting Huerta?

edgar is hands down the best right now. his wrestling career was great (maybe not by world-class or ufc standards). but he finished 8th in the U.S. (which is one off from being all-american)

his boxing is what made him the best mma fighter in the world. we all know strong wrestlers do amazing in mma, but he was able to develop some serious boxing skills to compliment that. i really don't know who will win the edgar/maynard rematch. i just remember that MTV true life did a special on frankie edgar and it ended with him losing a decision to maynard 7 days before his wedding lol

i think he made some serious improvements in his game since then. i gotta agree with the rankings and say 1. edgar 2. maynard 3. penn

I'm honestly a fan of BenDo but honestly #7 in the world......... I mean we honestly he's in a division that is even less talented then UFC and Strikeforce........... To be fair he's an awesome fighter but to put him ahead of the guys he's ahead when these men have wins against talent all at a higher level then that of BenDo is just too much. Seriously if Dunham or George went up against him who would you give the advantage too? BenDo is a champ and a top 15 def, but I still think until he gets tested outside of WEC you can't put him at top 10

What!? Dude, there are good fighters outside of the UFC and Melendez has fought them. The UFC isn't the be all end all when it comes to fighters.

To be fair to Frankie, KOs are rarer in the LW division and he's not a submission guy so finishes aren't going to be happening in bunches. He finished Matt Veach and Mark Bocek, who aren't slouches, but his other recent fights have come against really tough guys.

9 decisions combined in the last 10 fights for the champion and the challenger. This is exactly why the mainstream has little interest in the LW division.

Every other weight class the longer the fights go generally the more likely that someone finishes it. All the top guys have a high finish rate, outside of GSP, who still finishes some 25% of the time.

People get on Anderson for a few decisions in a row, yet somehow Frankie, Maynard and GSP get a complete pass.

Yeah, being an Aussie I love that G-Sot is getting some love as most of our other UFC entries have been. . . well. . . crap. . . (record wise, anyway).

Penn vs G-Sot would be a mad fight! And man I hate people hating on Edgar. What more does he have to do?? I agree he hasnt finished fights but never the less, he has beaten one of the best TWICE!

Good list, cant disagree though K Flo's slide is a bit sad. But lets not write him off yet. . .

ya man, g-sot is definitely australia's gem. he has a great chance at gaining the belt one day. i have to be honest, even i was rooting for him at the ufc in australia when he beat stevenson.

i think g-sot is going against joe lauzon in his next fight. lauzon is a good fighter, but just not at the same level. g-sot should be getting a title shot after maynard...at least i hope
