The MMA Top Ten 2.10.12: Top 10 Fighters to Follow on Twitter
Posted by Stewart Lange on 02.10.2012

Welcome to another MMA Top Ten here on 411mania! This week, I'll be taking a look back at one of our old top tens, which is what fighters are best to follow on twitter. Now, Twitter really is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of gig, but it really has blown up the last couple of years. I'm hooked, so here are my favorite fighters to follow!

10: Jason High

Twitter Name: @KCBanditMMA

Typical Tweet: "So Diaz can't fight, but he's not injured....y'all know what that sounds like. #IMJUSTSAYING"

Current Strikeforce and former UFC fighter Jason High is one of the good guys of MMA, always taking time for fans on the social networks. He's also a friend of 411, having been involved in interviews, predictions for my old Superfight column and even took part in Fact or Fiction once. He'll generally reply to everyone so he makes a busy timeline, but it's always good insight.

9: Pat Barry

Twitter Name: @HypeOrDie

Typical Tweet: "INSTEAD OF ASKING WHY IM YELLING WITH ALL CAPS, HOW ABOUT FIGURE OUT HOWTHEEEEEFUCK YOU CAN READ WITH YOUR EARS!!! FUCKIN ALIENS!!!"

Pat Barry is an amusing fighter to follow. For a while, Barry decided to write all of his tweets in capital letters. While this allegedly cost him followers, Barry continued on. Another fighter who replies to a lot of his fans, it's his own tweets that are generally pretty funny, including one after planking on Jon Aniks shoe, calling him "Not Joe Rogan".

8: Benson Henderson

Twitter Name: @SmoothOne155

Typical Tweet: "Sitting here at Starbux & having to listen to the worst 1st date EVER for the past 5 minutes...feel bad for the poor guy..."

If you type in the hashtag "#insomniac suite", you'll see a number of tweets from Ben Henderson. While this has slowed as he prepares to take on Frankie Edgar in Japan, Smooth Ben would often conduct his fellow insomniacs, encouraging them to watch particular films and so on at ridiculous hours of the day. An example? One day, on my way to work (8:30am UK time) Henderson and chums were sitting down to watch "300".

7: Dan Hardy

Twitter Name: @DanHardyMMA

Typical Tweet: "Ok, question time. As most countries are being lead by idiots, what celebrity (past or present) would you choose to lead your country?"

If you follow Dan Hardy, chances are he follows you too. If you've tweeted him, chances are he's tweeted you back. A seemingly constant presence on Twitter, Hardy always comes across well- interacting with fans, discussing his training and commenting on the big MMA and World news stories.

6: Quinton Jackson

Twitter Name: @Rampage4Real

Typical Tweet: "I just logged on 2 xbox live and saw my bluetooth commercial on the dashboard. Boy is that dope."

While Mr. Jackson has slowed down recently, he has formerly feuded with pretty much anyone who looks at him the wrong way on Twitter. His beef with Rashad Evans went on for some time, plus there was the whole Mohammad Lawal thing, that got so heated that they almost met in the cage for real. Rampage also broke news of "SpyGate" over his Twitter account, as news he leaked about getting "injured" before the Jones fight broke on the network.

5: Miguel Torres

Twitter Name: @MiguelTorresMMA

Typical Tweet: "They say alcohol doesn't fix problems, well neither does milk."

Ah, Miguel Torres. A perennial "Ultimate Writer" Tweeter and my MMA 5 & 1 "Douche of the Week" once upon a time, Torres became the first fighter in the UFC to pick up his marching orders due to an ill-advised tweet about rape. While his content has mellowed slightly, the Mullet is one of the funniest men, let alone fighters, to follow on Twitter, due to off the cuff lines about anything and everything.

4: Chael Sonnen

Twitter Name: @SonnenCH

Typical Tweet: "Well rounded just means that you suck at a lot of things all at once. Try growing a spine and mastering something for a change, worm."

Let me get this out there straight away. You'll be lucky if Chael Sonnen tweets more than once a week, but believe me, they are worth the wait. A relative newcomer to the social network, Sonnen will impart gems that usually involve Anderson Silva, Brazil or whoever is pissing him off at that point in time. He doesn't follow ANYONE, obviously out of principle, but hey, since so many people are hanging on for his every tweet, who cares what anyone else has to say?

3: Kenny Florian

Twitter Name: @KennyFlorian

Typical Tweet: "I can't tell u how much inspiration I get from watching that Abreva commercial where the woman kicks & punches her way out of a cold sore."

Kenny Florian is worth following because he is a total font of knowledge. Not only do you get insights on all things football, hockey, Vegas and MMA related, he's also having constant banter with all the rest of your UFC favorites. And Mandy Moore. So it's not all bad. If you follow him, you should probably also follow Keith Florian too, otherwise a lot of what he's saying may go over your head.

2: Jason Miller

Twitter Name: @MayhemMiller

Typical Tweet: "I'm at Starbucks and just saw a baby Mexican scream so loud he made a deaf guy cringe. "

As you would expect from his real life persona, Jason Miller has a larger than life Twitter persona too. Unlike a few of the other fighters with over 150,000 followers, Miller is excellent at keeping up with his fans, at the same time giving his insights on life. Thoughts turn to MMA mainly on breaking news or pay per view events, which is when things get serious for a minute, before normal service resumes to interesting and amusing retweets. You may also notice Miller seems to be on commission from Starbucks, however I've been assured this is not the case.

1: Forrest Griffin

Twitter Name: @ForrestGriffin

Typical Tweet: "I'd have a lot more followers but most my folks from GA still on prepaid phones that ain't got that twitter shit"

Not only is Forrest Griffin one of the most likeable fighters, he's also in my mind the top choice to follow on Twitter. Always answering fan tweets, passing judgment on the big MMA news, releasing amusing stories and jokes, not to mention retweeting some cool stuff, it's all here for you in one easy to follow account.

Well, there we have my top ten fighters to follow on Twitter! Sorry it was a bit light on content this time around, there is going to be a new Top Ten guy joining us soon, so look out for that starting up! Check back on Wednesday for my MMA 5 & 1 and hey, if you want, click the button below to follow me on Twitter too!

Stew:

Benson Henderson, whom I follow, is actually kind of annoying, because he quotes EVERYTHING, so your timeline fills up with garbage. Just a word of warning for potential followers. Also, his hashtag creation is #InsomniacsUnite not #Insomniacs Suite.

Also, Sonnen's best tweet ever was: "I'm not going to stop being an eagle just because I'm surrounded by turkeys."

Forrest's tweets are often self-deprecating. Sometimes I don't know if I should laugh or feel bad he puts himself down a lot.
