411 MMA Rankings 10.02.12: Light Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 10.02.2012

October may be the month with ghosts, goblins and witches, but as far as the light heavyweight division in mixed martial arts is concerned, even they are scared of Jon Jones!

Welcome to the 411 MMA Rankings where we rank the top 15 fighters in any particular weight class each week. I'm glad to say the ridiculous situation surrounding the canceling of UFC 151 is behind us, because Jon Jones just destroyed another braves soul. This time, it was Vitor Belfort who ended up on the receiving end of a fight concluding submission hold. Ironically, in the first round, Jones was THIS CLOSE to having his arm broken and still, received some pain for his trouble regardless. As a matter of fact, as a result of Belfort's armbar, Jones is probably not fighting until the spring as his arm heals up (no fracture, probably a ligament issue?) and the next challenger presents themselves.

Speaking of that next challenger, it sounds like it will be either Dan Henderson or Lyoto Machida who will get the opportunity to fight for the spot, after both were named challengers at various points in 2012. Henderson's MCL is healing up and Machida is busy talking about fighting Georges St. Pierre at middleweight, so don't be surprised if you see pigs flying by your window if you are living in the same universe as Lyoto.

We learned yesterday that Forrest Griffin took Xanax the night before he fought Anderson Silva years ago and failed a drug test over it the night of the fight. Why are we only learning about this over three years later? In any event, Griffin is preparing for his next fight in December against Chael Sonnen who is the ONLY fighter actively talking trash and seeking a fight with Jon Jones. What's the lesson here? Flap your gums and chances are you will be a richer man for it.

Talk about a fight that is ACTUALLY going down, Glover Teixeira is actually going to fight someone next week. If you go by the number of fighters who turned down the chance to fight him, he may be a real life Michael Myers who doesn't need a giant blade to do damage. Shogun Rua, Stephan Bonnar and Rashad Evans each declined while Rampage Jackson's reported injured elbow resulted in him pulling out of the fight in Brazil. Have no fear, FABIO MALDONADO is here to rescue Glover from having nobody to fight next weekend. Boy, that Maldonado fella sure is a nice fella.

While King Mo Lawal is on the sidelines waiting for his suspension to end in 2013 so he can make his Bellator debut, he's finally making inroads on realizing one of his other dreams. Mo will make his TNA Impact Wrestling debut this Thursday night on Spike TV as they begin to promote the former Strikeforce champion's appearance on their October PPV in a ringside enforcer position (a la Mike Tyson). So, if you've been waiting to get your fix of the King, you now know where to find him.

Lastly, when you go to leave a comment beneath the article, you will notice the powers that be implemented a brand spankin' new comment system. FEEDBACK to Last Week's Bantamweight Rankings

From DB:
Chris Cariaso's last fight and new weightclass was at Flyweight.
Ouch. Indeed it was, I apologize for the oversight.

From Brian:
Outstanding list - your lists and responses to comments are one of the reasons why this is my favorite MMA site on the internet!

A lot of names on there I don't know very well but 1-10 makes a lot of sense to me.
Thanks for the compliment. May I suggest you check out Bellator on MTV 2 now and especially in January on Spike.

From wylun:
u kno wat i just realized scrolling down from Cruz to Barao...

THERE ARE FUCKING 10 damn UFC champions~` 2 b/c of interm but still.. 10 fucking champions.. how the hell did we go from 5 to 8-10~~

SHIT IS TURNING INTO BOXING!..

i can honestly do w/o the Flyweight division~~

anyway.. back to the standings.. solid standings.. i would like to see Mike Easton fight Faber... i honestly dont like both of them but i hate faber even more.. so hopefully that will knock faber down the ranks .. and hopefully Easton can just muscle him around and hulk out on him

solid standings overall tho~

its honestly hard to even keep up w/ all these damn standings sometimes.. i dont kno about anyone else, but Lightweight to Heavyweight.. im fine.. i can cover atleast the top 10-15 in my head per each weight class easily..

but then u drop down the Feather.. and im like ehh.. i can maybe get the top 5-10 easily b/c alot of the featherweights are more established and alot came from Light weight...

then u get to Banta... and ur like.. i can honestly name only the top 5 and maybe the 6/7 if they are makings moves currently.. but thats about it..

FLYWEIGHT.. god.. all i kno is mighty mouse, benovidas (and i prob spelled that wrong) and uncle creepy,.. and i dont even kno his real name lol.

call it i guess b/c the weight classes are new.. or it could also just be that i dont really care about the lighter weights~~.. yes they fights are exciting.. but honestly.. they can just be so exciting wen we NEVER ever see a finish~ .. sorry for my rant on the flyweights lol. o.O wrong topic!!
Haha, if I were Dana White, there would be a 9th division thanks to the women. It comes with the territory of running more shows and having a big roster.

I know the flyweight division does not seem all that important now (there's been too few fights at 125 since the inception in March), but it does give guys like Mighty Mouse and Benavidez new life while giving a platform for the Ian McCall's and Jussier da Silva's of the world.

The reason you likely can't recite most of the top 135ers like you can with the heavier classes is the perceived importance. Bantamweight fights rarely are given a high place on a big card and when that happens, it's usually a Cruz/Faber or now Barao. Then, you have the Bellator group of guys who are kicking ass on MTV 2 for the remainder of the year. All are quality fighters, but if you have all of these weight classes, I guess you cannot have 120 fighters all similarly be popular.

Still, a lot of the fights at 135 and 125 are awesome. Hell just this weekend, Brad Pickett knocked Yves Jabouin's block off.

From MPMoore:
It's hard to figure out what happens in this division with Cruz sidelined for so long. Barao is the new kingpin for the time being, but who does he fight that makes sense? Does he sit for 6 months? Injuries are stupid...
My assumption is Michael McDonald returns around December or January and fights Renan Barao for the interim-championship. Depending on when the expectation is for Cruz's return (fall 2013, let's say), they could either have another interim-title fight (Brad Pickett or Mike Easton, for example), too. Based on their history of taking their time for champions to return though, I'll guess the Barao/McDonald winner sits out to have the unification fight around this time next year.

Sucks, I know.

*This all assumes if McDonald were to beat Barao, his hand doesn't break again, too.

From Alan:
Geez. Nobody in this division is fighting right now.
Didn't sink in before, but damn. The only two in action are Brad Pickett (who won on Saturday) and Scott Jorgensen (December 8 vs. John Albert). As of today, there is no other top fighter with a fight.

A mixture of injuries (Cruz, McDonald), guys waiting for fights (Faber, Easton, WIneland, Bowles), a contractual disagreement (Nam), waiting until the jump to Spike (Dantas/Galvao) and that's more than half the list right there.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

411's Official MMA Rankings: Light Heavyweight Division

Light Heavyweight Division (205 lbs)

1) Jon "Bones" Jones (17-1)

Height: 6'4

Birthday: July 19, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Vitor Belfort - Win via submission (americana) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

- vs. Rashad Evans - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida - December 10, 2011

- vs. Quinton Jackson - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage - September 24, 2011

- vs. Shogun Rua - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 128: Shogun vs. Bones - March 19, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Jones finally returned to the cage two weeks ago and with the exception of a near disastrous early armbar by Vitor Belfort, we saw much of the same. Belfort was so close to breaking the arm, he felt something pop in Jones' arm and apparently let up which spelled his doom. Jones dominated the rest of the fight not knowing how serious his arm was injured, saying afterward it was numb.

We still don't know whether he will need surgery or any kind of therapy for his arm, but in the meantime, he will be watching to see who his next contender is. Well, that and watching Chael Sonnen continue to hurl insults his way (as he did on Fuel TV over the weekend).

2) Dan Henderson (29-8)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: August 24, 1970

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Shogun Rua - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Win via TKO (strikes) - Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson - July 30, 2011

- vs. Rafael Feijao Cavalcante - Win via TKO (punches) - Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson - March 5, 2011

- vs. Babalu Sobral - Win via KO (punches) - Strikeforce: St. Louis - December 4, 2010

- vs. Jake Shields - Loss via decision (unanimous) - Strikeforce: Nashville - April 17, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Henderson is recovering from the torn MCL in his knee that was the start of the mess that ended up with the cancellation of UFC 151 in August. According to UFC honcho Dana White, the plan is now for Hendo to fight Lyoto Machida with the winner being crowned Jones' next championship contender. The fight has not been signed yet and no date has been rumored, either.

3) Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (21-6)

Birthday: November 25, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

- vs. Dan Henderson - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

- vs. Forrest Griffin - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami - August 27, 2011

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 128: Shogun vs. Bones - March 19, 2011

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Win via KO (punches) - UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 - May 8, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Alexander Gustafsson - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

Comment: Hell yeah, Shogun is in the co-main event role of the biggest Fox card ever in two months time. While Rua's performance against Brandon Vera on Fox this summer left more unanswered questions than anything else, this is the first time he'll fight a major prospect since he lost to Jon Jones last year. Until December, we'll have to deal with the questions about Shogun's health, which is usually a thorny issue after he loses, not after wins.

4) Rashad Evans (17-2-1)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: September 25, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

- vs. Phil Davis - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis - January 28, 2012

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz - August 6, 2011

- vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans - May 29, 2010

- vs. Thiago Silva - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva - January 2, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Evans confirmed over the weekend he turned down a fight with Glover Teixeira (when did this guy become the baddest man on the planet?) for this month in Brazil because he had not been training and would have had about 3 weeks to do so. Looking ahead, he plans to return early in 2013 against any light heavyweight the UFC can offer.

5) Lyoto Machida (18-3)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: May 3, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ryan Bader - Win via KO (punch) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida - December 10, 2011

- vs. Randy Couture - Win via KO (KICK) - UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields - April 29, 2011

- vs. Quinton Jackson - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida - November 20, 2010

- vs. Shogun Rua - Loss via KO (punches) - UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 - May 8, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: The tricky Machida apparently said in an interview, he'd be open to dropping to middleweight to fight Georges St. Pierre. Stop laughing. Obviously, there's a better chance Chael Sonnen is the light heavyweight champion by the end of 2013, but you wonder if this is Machida being less than thrilled at the idea of fighting Jones down the road, again. In any event, it appears his next fight will be with Dan Henderson. I hope this match-up happens because it's been one of the few Machida "dream fights" (for lack of a better phrase) out there over the past few years.

6) Alexander Gustafsson (14-1)

Height: 6'5

Birthday: January 15, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Thiago Silva - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fuel: Gustafsson vs. Silva - April 14, 2012

- vs. Vladimir Matyushenko - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem - December 30, 2011

- vs. Matt Hamill - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz - August 6, 2011

- vs. James Te-Huna - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 127: Fitch vs. Penn - February 27, 2011

- vs. Cyrille Diabate - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 120: Bisping vs. Akiyama - October 16, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Shogun Rua - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

Comment: Put up or shut up time (not that Gustafsson has ever really 'talked,' but you get the point) for the 25-year old Swedish born fighter. Obviously, Rua presents a BIG step up in competition compared to the Thiago Silva's/Janitor's/Hamill's of the world, but I'm guessing Gustafsson will be closer to even than major underdog by bettors.

Can he use Shogun's name to make himself into a star on CBS in front of millions of viewers? 2013 will be more interesting if he could…

7) Phil Davis (9-1, 1 No Contest)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: September 25, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Wagner Prado - No Contest (eye poke) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

- vs. Rashad Evans - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis - January 28, 2012

- vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis - March 26, 2011

- vs. Tim Boetsch - Win via submission (Kimura) - UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida - November 20, 2010

- vs. Rodney Wallace - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen - August 7, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Wagner Prado - UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar - October 13, 2012

Comment: The pseudo-feud between Davis and Prado will hopefully become a thing of the past after UFC 153 in under two weeks. The first fight ended with an eye poke and Prado will get his opportunity to make Phil pay for the deed.

Yes, I'm trying to sell the fight based on an eye poke (the UFC did it years ago with the Johnson/Burns fights). EXCITING!

8) Ryan Bader (14-3)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: June 7, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

- vs. Quinton Jackson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

- vs. Jason Brilz - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 132: Cruz vs. Bader - July 2, 2011

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort - February 5, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

9) Gegard Mousasi (34-3-2)

Height: 6'0

Currently Fighting With:Strikeforce

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ovince St. Preux - Win via decision (unanimous) - Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal - December 17, 2011

- vs. Hiroshi Izumi - Win via TKO (strikes) - DREAM 17 - July 16, 2011

- vs. Keith Jardine - Draw (majority) - Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley - April 9, 2011

- vs. Tatsuya Mizuno - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - DREAM 16 - September 25, 2010

- vs. Jake O'Brien - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - DREAM 15 - July 10, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Mousasi is recuperating from surgery to repair a torn ACL and could get back in the cage by the end of the year, but knowing the frequency of Strikeforce shows these days, don't quote me on that.

10) Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (20-5)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: June 2, 1976

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via TKO (body strikes) - UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida - December 10, 2011

- vs. Phil Davis - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis - March 26, 2011

- vs. Ryan Bader - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop - September 25, 2010

- vs. Jason Brilz - Win via decision (split) - UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans - May 29, 2010

- vs. Luiz Cane - Win via KO - UFC 106 - November 21, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

11) Forrest Griffin (19-7)

Height: 6'3

Birthday: July 1, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen 2 - July 7, 2012

- vs. Shogun Rua - Loss via KO (strikes) - UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami - August 27, 2011

- vs. Rich Franklin - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort - February 5, 2011

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via decision (split) - UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2 - November 21, 2009

- vs. Anderson Silva - Loss by KO (strikes) - UFC 101: Declaration - August 8, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Chael Sonnen - UFC 155: dos Santos vs. Velasquez - December 29, 2012

Comment: Either Chael Sonnen will win and cut an epic promo calling out Jon Jones (ANDERSON SILVA, YOU ABSOLUTELY SUCK!) or Forrest Griffin will pull off another win and Chael will return to the background.

Nothing against Forrest, but the MMA universe needs Chael Sonnen chasing someone. The imbalance would be horrific otherwise.

12) Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (32-10)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: June 20, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ryan Bader - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage - September 24, 2011

- vs. Matt Hamill - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill - May 28, 2011

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Win via decision (split) - UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida - November 20, 2010

- vs. Rashad Evans - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans - May 29, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Injured (elbow)

Comment: Rampage was set to fight Teixeira in Brazil and ride off into the sunset having fulfilled his UFC contract. Not anymore. He pulled out of the fight last month with an injury and there's been no public word on when he's considering returning.

13) Glover Teixeira (18-2)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: October 28, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Kyle Kingsbury - Win via submission (arm-triangle choke) - UFC 146: dos Santos vs. Mir - May 26, 2012

- vs. Ricco Rodriguez - Win via submission (strikes) - MMA Against Dengue - November 27, 2011

- vs. Marvin Eastman - Win via KO (punch) - Shooto Brazil Fight for BOPE - August 25, 2011

- vs. Antonio Mendes - Win via submission (rear naked choek) - Shooto Brazil 24 - August 5, 2011

- vs. Marcio Cruz - Win via TKO (strikes) - Clube da Luta - July 20, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Fabio Maldonado - UFC 153: Aldo vs. Koch - October 13, 2012

Comment: I think it's fair to say 100 men turned down a fight with Glover Teixeira and it wouldn't be hyperbole. One man who actually went out of his way to get the fight is Fabio Maldonado. What are his intentions?

A) He really badly wanted to fight on the Brazil card.
B) He wanted to endear himself to the UFC considering he lost his last two fights.
C) He is confident he can beat Glover Teixeira.
D) All of the Above

14) Vinny Magalhaes (10-5, 1 NC)

Height: 6'3

Birthday: July 2, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Igor Pokrajac - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

- vs. Mikhail Zayats - Win via TKO (head kick and punches) - M-1 Challenge 27: Magalhaes vs. Zayats - October 14, 2011

- vs. Viktor Nemkov - Win via submission (mounted gogoplata) - M-1 Challenge 25: Zavurov vs. Enomoto - April 28, 2011

- vs. Jake Doerr - Win via TKO (strikes) - M-1 Challenge 24: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa - March 25, 2011

- vs. Robert Scott - Win via submission (armbar) - MMA Xplosion: International Team Challenge - January 29, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Vinny returned to the UFC for his first fight in the promotion since he lost a decision to Eliot Marshall at UFC 97 in 2009 (the Anderson Silva/Patrick Cote show). Since then, he went 7-1 fighting between the U.S. and Russia before his contract with M-1 Global came to an acrimonious end (which saw Magalhaes try to auction off his light heavyweight championship on eBay).

Over the weekend, he beat Igor Pokrajac after displaying the smooth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu he's best known for. With much more experience than he had in 2009, he steps right into the mix at 205 in 2012. Looking to the future, he said he would like to fight either Matt Hamill or the Phil Davis/Wagner Prado winner next.

15) Stanislav Nedkov (12-0)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: December 9, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Luiz Cane - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami - August 27, 2011

- vs. Augustin Helgiu - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - BMMAF: Warriors 13 - May 21, 2010

- vs. Kevin Randleman - Win via decision (split) - Sengoku 11 - November 7, 2009

- vs. Travis Wiuff - Win via TKO (strikes) - Sengoku 8 - May 2, 2009

- vs. Masayuki Kono - Win via TKO (strikes) - Pancrase: Shining 10 - December 7, 2008

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Thiago Silva - UFC on Fuel: Franklin vs. Le - November 10, 2012

Comment: FINALLY!@~! Nedkov has not fought in 2012 due to a variety of visa problems and injuries, but he will finally step foot inside the octagon in China next month. He takes his perfect record with him to take on former top contender Thiago Silva (who is 1-3 with 1 no contest since 2009).

Final Notes: Stephan Bonnar received additional votes.

Both King Mo Lawal and Rafael Cavalcante remain ineligible for our list because they are serving their respective suspensions for failing drug tests in 2012.
