411 MMA Rankings 10.30.12: Pound for Pound
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 10.30.2012

Halloween is tomorrow and Hurricane Sandy is in the process of causing all kinds of hell for millions of people. Take a few minutes out of your day and enjoy the latest edition of the 411 MMA Rankings.

Everyone loves our pound-for-pound rankings like everyone loves some Halloween candy (or a lot). That right there is a metaphor for MMA action because everyone likes a few good fights here and there. However, between now and the New Year's, there is going to be so much varied action around the world that for a split second, you may feel like it's 2008 all over again. In the UFC, we'll see Georges St. Pierre, Benson Henderson and Junior dos Santos defend their respective championships.

Over the past five weeks, we've seen the top two fighters in the world in action with almost severely different outcomes. While Anderson Silva dropped Stephan Bonnar in an almost all-too-eerily similar fashion like he did Chael Sonnen, Jon Jones was THIS CLOSE to having his arm snapped off by Vitor Belfort. Luckily for the man they call Bones escaped with bones enact when Belfort let up on the armbar and Vitor spent the rest of the fight regretting it. Although UFC color commentator Joe Rogan and later on, UFC president Dana White both talked up the potential of a Jones/Silva dream fight, this humble writer says don't hold your breath.

Before you continue on, please vote in the poll below. The 411 MMA staff have thrown around the idea of including female fighters in these rankings in the past and some support it while others do not. I figure you, THE PEOPLE, can settle it once and for all. If you would like to see women like Ronda Rousey eligible for our POUND FOR POUND rankings in the future, vote YES. If you are on the negative front, vote NO. Gracias for clicking one way or the other.

Here's some feedback to last week's featherweight rankings.

From choppersson:
Funny how Frankie Edgar is not in the your rankings (which I totally agree with) and he is next in line for a shot at the title. Am I looking forward to this fight? Sure...Should he walk into FW and get an immediate shot? I don't think so. Erik Koch was next in line. Give him the shot and if you want a good eliminator with one fight give Edgar the Korean Zombie to see who gets the champ.
If you're of the belief title fights should only be given to fighters in that particular division, I can't argue against being anti-Edgar/Aldo. However, I can give it a pass because Aldo is coming off a run with the lightweight title and despite coming off two decision losses to Benson Henderson, he's still a top quality fighter. Plus, some have been looking forward to Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar fighting for a few years now.

Personally though, I wouldn't mind if Chan Sung Jung received a shot before Edgar.

From Yup:
It's pretty fucked up how Koch got robbed of his title shot. Seriously, the UFC is on some Strikeforce shit now. I love Frankie Edgar, but I honestly don't see how losing to Ben Henderson twice (albeit in really close fights that many fans think he won) makes him the #1 contender at featherweight. This and the whole "Chael Sonnen getting a title shot because he talked a lot of shit" thing really make UFC look like shit. I'm still gonna watch their PPVs though so..... whatever.
Was Erik Koch robbed? I presume it's based on our own individual perspectives. It's not as though he defeated a top 5 or top 10 featherweight to finally get the opportunity. He beat Raphael Assuncao and Jonathan Brookins in the UFC and once Hatsu Hioki declined the title fight, the UFC went to Koch. Unfortunately, he was injured and they went to Frankie Edgar. Now, after Aldo was injured, instead of going back to Koch, they're set on Edgar.

Certainly, it sucks for Koch, but timing doesn't help everyone.

From Rodney Strangerfileds:
Curran is ranked way too high...beating a can like warren is not impressive.
Perhaps, but being the first man to knock out Marlon Sandro is quite the impressive feat.

From King Durin:
I thought with his announced move to FW and a previously scheduled bout, that Edgar would now be ranked as a FW. Why is this not true?
I took him out because at the moment, there's no official date for the fight with Jose Aldo. Once that fight is booked, Edgar will be eligible if my fellow writers feel like ranking him.

From Simon Rinella:
You know, I like Pitbull as much as the next, but he hasn't fought in a long time. how is he still ranked?
Blame me. The cancelation of the Curran/Pitbull fight during the summer should have meant Freire is out of the rankings until he gets a fight. He last fought in May 2011, so he shouldn't be ranked, indeed.

From Bobbay:
Bellator and One FC should have a talent exchange and do proper tournaments to keep some of these guys as well as paying them a bit more in the process.
It would be a sweet deal for fans, but I doubt you'll see it. Bellator does not want to reliant on other promotions when they have tournaments to handle over the course of 3+ months. Plus, they want control over their fighters and especially over anyone who has the potential to win a tournament or championship.

Perhaps, they could strike a deal for non-tournament super fights like we saw when Eddie Alvarez fought Shinya Aoki.

Thanks for all the comments, questions, insults and more, they are always appreciated.

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

411's MMA Rankings

Pound For Pound

1) Anderson Silva (31-4)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: April 14, 1975

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Stephan Bonnar - Win via TKO (knee) - UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar - October 13, 2012

- vs. Chael Sonnen - Win via TKO (knee and punches) - UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen 2 - July 7, 2012

- vs. Yushin Okami - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami - August 27, 2011

- vs. Vitor Belfort - Win via KTFO (front kick) - UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort - February 5, 2011

- vs. Chael Sonnen - Win via submission (triangle armbar) - UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen - August 7, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Maintaining his stranglehold on the spot held for the best fighter in the sport, Silva is fresh off his destruction of Stephan Bonnar over two weeks ago. Silva did not take him seriously, toying with him at various points, his hands down and back purposefully pressed against the cage. Bonnar, to his credit, didn't back down but ate a massive knee to the sternum for his trouble. Just like that, Silva finished Bonnar and become the first person to do so, to boot.

Silva's management wants Georges St. Pierre next and not Jon Jones. Why? Of course, GSP poses less of a risk to Silva while bringing a monster pay day with him.

Or, maybe Michael Bisping. One thing's for certain, Chris Weidman is not looking like someone Silva and his people are thinking about because he means little to business right now.

2) Jon "Bones" Jones (17-1)

Height: 6'4

Birthday: July 19, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Vitor Belfort - Win via submission (americana) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

- vs. Rashad Evans - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida - December 10, 2011

- vs. Quinton Jackson - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage - September 24, 2011

- vs. Shogun Rua - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones - March 19, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Chael Sonnen - UFC - April 2013

Comment: Bones dispatched of Vitor Belfort last month but hurt his arm in the process. He'll need physical therapy without surgery and will be returning to the cage in April. The twist is he'll be fighting Chael Sonnen in a light heavyweight title fight after both participate in next season's The Ultimate Fighter on FX (probably Tuesday nights). Filming should already be underway and if you're willing to give the show another chance, you'll probably see a combination of pro wrestler Chael Sonnen and serious bust-his-ass-in-the-gym Chael Sonnen for 13 weeks.

3) Georges St. Pierre (22-2)

Height: 5'10

Birthday: May 19, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jake Shields - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields - April 30, 2011

- vs. Josh Koscheck - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 124: St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2 - December 11, 2010

- vs. Dan Hardy - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy - March 27, 2010

- vs. Thiago Alves - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 100 - July 11, 2009

- vs. BJ Penn - Win via TKO (corner stoppage) - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn II - January 31, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- Carlos Condit - UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit - November 17, 2012

Comment: While everyone appears to be throwing the horse ahead of the cart and talking GSP/Silva for next year, St. Pierre has to maintain his focus on the task at hand -- Carlos Condit. St. Pierre has been out of action for over 18 months and Condit is capable of finishing a fight pretty quickly. GSP has even talked about his inability to finish previous opponents and believes he'll be more of an opportunistic fighter in his return.

4) Jose Aldo (21-1)

Height: 5'7

Birthday: September 9, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Chad Mendes - Win via KO (knee) - UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes - January 14, 2012

- vs. Kenny Florian - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard 3 - October 8, 2011

- vs. Mark Hominick - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields - April 29, 2011

- vs. Manny Gamburyan - Win via KO (punches) - WEC 51: Aldo vs. Gamburyan - September 30, 2010

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via decision (unanimous) - WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber - April 24, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Injured (motorcycle accident)

Comment: Aldo certainly can't stake his claim for a top 3 spot in all of MMA when he's out of action healing from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident during the summer. When he does return, he's expected to defend the featherweight championship against Frankie Edgar.

5) Junior dos Santos (15-1)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 243

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Frank Mir - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 146: dos Santos vs. Mir - May 26, 2012

- vs. Cain Velasquez - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. dos Santos - November 12, 2011

- vs. Shane Carwin - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 131: dos Santos vs. Carwin - June 11, 2011

- vs. Roy Nelson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen - August 7, 2010

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via KO (punches) - UFC on Versus - March 21, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Cain Velasquez - UFC 155: dos Santos vs. Velasquez 2 - December 29, 2012

6) Benson Henderson (17-2)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: November 16, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Frankie Edgar - Win via decision (split) - UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar 2 - August 11, 2012

- vs. Frankie Edgar - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

- vs. Jim Miller - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Versus: Hardy vs. Lytle - August 14, 2011

- vs. Mark Bocek - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields - April 30, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Nate Diaz - UFC on Fox 5 - December 8, 2012

7) Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson (16-2-1)

Height: 5'3

Birthday: August 13, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Joseph Benavidez - Win via decision (split) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

- vs. Ian McCall - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on FX: Johnson vs. McCall - June 8, 2012

- vs. Ian McCall - DRAW - UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann - March 3, 2012

- vs. Dominick Cruz - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Versus: Cruz vs. Johnson - October 1, 2011

- vs. Miguel Torres- Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill - May 28, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: MIGHTY MOUSE. The new and first ever UFC flyweight champion takes his spot on the list after besting Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152 in the flyweight tournament final. Johnson proved to be too fast and effective throwing his unique brand of strikes.

8) Carlos Condit (28-5)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: April 26, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Nick Diaz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit - February 4, 2012

- vs. Dong Hyun Kim - Win via KO (flying knee) - UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber - July 2, 2011

- vs. Dan Hardy - Win via KO (punches) - UFC 120: Bisping vs. Akiyama - October 16, 2010

- vs. Rory MacDonald - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 115: Liddell vs. Franklin - June 12, 2010

- vs. Jake Ellenberger - Win via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night 19 - September 16, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit - November 17, 2012

Comment: Just 18 days until Condit finally gets his crack at the UFC welterweight championship. Over the past six years, Condit is 11-1 and that includes a stint as WEC champion before moving to the UFC. Interestingly enough, we saw a bit of a different style for Condit when he fought Nick Diaz earlier this year. He took his reliance on counters to a new extreme against a guy in Diaz who preferred to draw his opponent into a brawl. The fight went to a decision, something that has only happened to Condit just four times in his entire career (he's 2-2 in those fights).

What will Condit's gameplan be for GSP on November 17?

9) Frankie Edgar (14-3-1)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: October 16, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ben Henderson - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar 2 - August 11, 2012

- vs. Ben Henderson - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

- vs. Gray Maynard - Win via KO (punches) - UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard 3 - October 8, 2011

- vs. Gray Maynard - Draw (Split) - UFC 125: Resolution - January 1, 2011

- vs. B.J. Penn - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2 - August 28, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Dodson emerges at the bottom of our P4P rankings for the first time following his knockout of Formiga on FX earlier this month. He now has two wins over a pair of top flyweights (Jussier Formiga and John Moraga) as he appears ready to challenge UFC champion Demetrious Johnson next year.

Closing Comments: Lyoto Machida, Pat Curran, Daniel Cormier and Nate Diaz each received additional votes.

Note that Dominick Cruz was not ranked because he has not competed since early October 2011. Plus, due to his injury, he will not fight until well into 2013.

Don't forget to vote in our poll regarding Ronda Rousey and women's fighters in general and whether we should include them in our next P4P rankings! The poll is at the top of this column. Thanks!
