411 MMA Rankings 11.27.12: Light Heavyweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 11.27.2012

Cyber Monday, huh? Sounds like something dirty kids tried to pull off a decade ago.

How about 411 MMA RANKINGS TUESDAY!? Maybe it doesn't have quite the same ring to it, but it's Tuesday! We close November with a look at the light heavyweight division featuring Jon Jones and everyone else. Ironically, his next opponent is not ranked because Chael Sonnen has not fought at 205-pounds since 2005. It's funny how that works out.

UFC on Fox is coming up pretty quickly on December 8 and features Shogun Rua in his latest brawl against Alexander Gustafsson. Shogun is quite the eclectic fighter, not knowing whether he'll bash his opponent like he did Forrest Griffin or be involved in wars like he was most recently against Dan Henderson and Brandon Vera. Remember when everyone assumed Rua would walk right through Vera at the last Fox show over the summer? How wrong we all were…

One fighter everyone has been right on point about this year is Glover Teixeira, the incredibly powerful Brazilian striker. He literally turned Fabio Maldonado's face into minced meat in Brazil last month and now he's preparing to do the same to a man he looked up to in Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. You'll see that fight on January 26 on Fox, or maybe we'll end up seeing Brandon Vera sub for either man if the injury bug rears its ugly head again.

Remember that injury bug that caused the insanity that led to the cancellation of UFC 151 not too long ago? It appears everyone who was part of that whole mess is about ready to take that step forward. We've seen Jones retain his title in the fight with Vitor Belfort and now he's filming The Ultimate Fighter leading to a fight with Sonnen next spring. Meanwhile, Dan Henderson will be ready to fight in February opposite one of the many men who turned down a shot at Jones on short notice in September, Lyoto Machida. Shogun was another man who turned down that opportunity, by the way.

As for Rashad Evans, the man without a path thanks to his loss to Jon Jones? He'll be back in February to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Not so ironically, the last two times "Lil Nog" lost in the octagon, he was beaten via unanimous decisions by Ryan Bader and Phil Davis. It's safe to say Evans is more dangerous than either of those men in the cage, so you don't have to look very far to understand why the former UFC champion is the betting favorite.

Before you carry on, how about an award for dumbest light heavyweight of 2012. Enter Thiago Silva via Sao Paulo, Brazil. The 30-year-old (his birthday was two weeks back) failed his second drug test since 2011 when his urine sample returned positive for marijuana metabolites. Because he fought on a show in China earlier this month with no government body oversight, it was the UFC's own testing which revealed his failure. So, instead of receiving another year-long suspension, Silva is out of commission for six months.

If you recall, his win against Brandon Vera at UFC 125 in January 2011 was overturned because when he submitted a urine sample to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, their testing revealed the sample to not be consistent with human urine. Yes, he tried to pass off a fake substance as his own and he was easily busted. He ended up admitting to his behavior (give the guy credit for that…what's up Sean Sherk?) and missed the rest of the year.

So, between January 2011 and May 2013 (a total of 29 months), Silva will be suspended for 18 months. Where's the dunce cap when you need it?

FEEDBACK to Last Week's Bantamweight Rankings

From MPMoore:
Solid list.
A McDonald fight makes sense. I like Pickett as well, so one more win will get him in the mix, althought a rematch with Barao may be too soon since it was so decisive, so two wins for a shot. That, and I don't think Wineland is in a position to be a title eliminator. I would put winner of Pickett/Wineland vs Easton/Caraway while Barao and Cruz have their inevitable matchup, then the winner of the mini tourney gets a shot at the champ.
And what about Bowles when he's back from injury? A tune-up fight, then what?
And Faber is always around, though he's hit his ceiling and a rematch with Cruz or Barao is not exactly enticing, at least to me...
But the UFC will get his face in there somewhere, you can be sure of that. He is the marketable one.
Too many options, my brain hurts.
Brian Bowles will need at least 3 wins to earn another title shot, but staying healthy will be just as important for him.

Faber is getting a fight with Vaughan Lee because he's totally out of the mix so you cannot have him knocking off any contenders. On paper, he should stop Lee and whomever's next is another name on his path to rebuild his career.

From middy:
Dana needs to tell Barao to get his ass into the cage and to defend that placeholder title. Faber is about the only recognizeable name in this division and anything Cruz had going on with him as far as casual fan appeal has kind of faded since his TUF season. Most of the guys in this divsion are kinda young which is understable as far as not having many names, but they need to remind people it still exsists with the actual Champ out.
Odds are, that's exactly the message delivered to Barao and his team.

From Ricky:
Barao said he would defend it before and Faber might be the only recognizable name YOU know but real MMA know at least two thirds of this list. Fanboys only will recognize Faber
It's not about "fanboys" but to the casual fans, there's no doubt that Urijah Faber is the only name they know. Considering Dominick Cruz will miss a year's worth of action, the division is working from behind the eight ball.

From Alan:
Barao also said he wanted to wait for Cruz so who knows what he'll end up doing.
Indeed he did, but it's safe to say he'll be back in the octagon before Cruz is ready.

From Alvin:
It's to bad Mike Easton vs. Brad Pickett isn't happening next.
Perhaps it's a match-up we'll see next summer if Easton and Pickett win their respective fights next month. Especially, if Renan Barao and Michael McDonald fight early next year, the timing works out.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

411's Official MMA Rankings: Light Heavyweight Division

Light Heavyweight Division (205 lbs)

1) Jon "Bones" Jones (17-1)

Height: 6'4

Birthday: July 19, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Vitor Belfort - Win via submission (americana) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

- vs. Rashad Evans - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

- vs. Shogun Rua - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 128: Shogun vs. Bones - March 19, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Chael Sonnen - UFC - April 27, 2013

Comment: Bones is currently filming the next season of The Ultimate Fighter which is expected to begin airing on FX either late in January or February. He will fight Chael Sonnen in the spring in a match-up where it's difficult to see any way where he can lose. So, after he fights Sonnen, we can look forward to the hype for a Jones/Silva fight. Of course, there will still be Hendo/Machida/Shogun/Gustafsson knocking on his door.

2) Dan Henderson (29-8)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: August 24, 1970

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Shogun Rua - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Lyoto Machida - UFC 157 - February 23, 2013

Comment: Now official, Henderson will return on the second PPV in February to fight Lyoto Machida. The winner should have a leg up on other contenders in the race for the next shot at Jon Jones.

3) Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (21-6)

Birthday: November 25, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Alexander Gustafsson - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

Comment: HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHOGUN who just turned 31-years-old on Sunday. Now, there are 11 nights until Shogun returns to Fox for a fight where there are plenty of people thinking his time is over as one of the division's best. He's been in his fair share of wars over the years including his last two fights and he'll take on the bigger, longer Swede looking to make a name for himself.

4) Rashad Evans (17-2-1)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: September 25, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

- vs. Phil Davis - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis - January 28, 2012

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz - August 6, 2011

- vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans - May 29, 2010

- vs. Thiago Silva - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva - January 2, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogeuira - UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar - February 2, 2013

5) Lyoto Machida (18-3)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: May 3, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ryan Bader - Win via KO (punch) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida - December 10, 2011

- vs. Randy Couture - Win via KO (KICK) - UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields - April 29, 2011

- vs. Quinton Jackson - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida - November 20, 2010

- vs. Shogun Rua - Loss via KO (punches) - UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 - May 8, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Dan Henderson - UFC 157 - February 23, 2013

Comment: Finally, after much back and forth, the fight between Hendo and Machida is now official for UFC 157. This is a fight that's been anticipated ever since Lyoto emerged as a top fighter in 2009. Henderson's aggressive style and his right hand find a way to hurt many opponents but Machida is a cerebral fighter who manages to avoid significant damage in most of his fights.

6) Phil Davis (10-1, 1 No Contest)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: September 25, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Wagner Prado - Win via submission (anaconda choke) - UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar - October 13, 2012

- vs. Wagner Prado - No Contest (eye poke) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

- vs. Rashad Evans - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis - January 28, 2012

- vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis - March 26, 2011

- vs. Tim Boetsch - Win via submission (Kimura) - UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida - November 20, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Forrest Griffin - UFC 155: dos Santos vs. Velasquez - December 29, 2012

Comment: Mr. Wonderful earned his first wining almost 19 months last month when he choked out Wagner Prado in their rematch. Up next for the wrestler is a fight against former champion Forrest Griffin next month. It's clearly a fight Davis is expected to win against a man who's last three wins have come by decisions opposite Tito Ortiz (twice) and Rich Franklin.

7) Alexander Gustafsson (14-1)

Height: 6'5

Birthday: January 15, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Thiago Silva - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fuel: Gustafsson vs. Silva - April 14, 2012

- vs. Vladimir Matyushenko - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem - December 30, 2011

- vs. Matt Hamill - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz - August 6, 2011

- vs. James Te-Huna - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 127: Fitch vs. Penn - February 27, 2011

- vs. Cyrille Diabate - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 120: Bisping vs. Akiyama - October 16, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Shogun Rua - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

Comment: Gustafsson has his eyes set on a title fight with Jon Jones but will have to stop Shogun Rua first. This is Gustafsson's biggest fight to the date, both in terms of opponent and the platform he'll have to do his job. It's possible if Alexander has his best night yet, he could emerge as a star ready to go after the champion. Or, perhaps he'll come back down to earth thanks to one of the best light heavyweights of all-time?It doesn't seem like there is much of a middle ground here.

8) Ryan Bader (14-3)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: June 7, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera - August 4, 2012

- vs. Quinton Jackson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

- vs. Jason Brilz - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 132: Cruz vs. Bader - July 2, 2011

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort - February 5, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

9) Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (20-5)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: June 2, 1976

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via TKO (body strikes) - UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida - December 10, 2011

- vs. Phil Davis - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis - March 26, 2011

- vs. Ryan Bader - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop - September 25, 2010

- vs. Jason Brilz - Win via decision (split) - UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans - May 29, 2010

- vs. Luiz Cane - Win via KO - UFC 106 - November 21, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Rashad Evans - UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar - February 2, 2013

10) Gegard Mousasi (34-3-2)

Height: 6'0

Birthday: August 1, 1985

Currently Fighting With: Strikeforce

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ovince St. Preux - Win via decision (unanimous) - Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal - December 17, 2011

- vs. Hiroshi Izumi - Win via TKO (strikes) - DREAM 17 - July 16, 2011

- vs. Keith Jardine - Draw (majority) - Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley - April 9, 2011

- vs. Tatsuya Mizuno - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - DREAM 16 - September 25, 2010

- vs. Jake O'Brien - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - DREAM 15 - July 10, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Mike Kyle - Strikeforce: Champions - January 12, 2013

Comment: Mousasi is officially signed to fight Mike Kyle on the final Strikeforce show in January. He's back from his time off recuperating from an ACL injury and Kyle is also ready following his two injuries over the past two years (one included a broken hand).

We're left to assume Mousasi will be one of the many fighters to be absorbed by the UFC, but nothing can be for certain just yet. On the bright side, he did leave M-1 Global two years ago and has looked good in his two fights since his draw with Keith Jardine in 2011 (Gegard was deducted a point during the fight). Although his career has seen its share of turns (due to the loss to King Mo in 2010 and his injuries), he is still just 27-years-old and one of the more dynamic strikers in the division. Hopefully, he does end up in the UFC because it's about time he fights the likes of Noguiera, Bader and the other names above.

But first, he must beat Mike Kyle who packs plenty of power in his punches, too.

11) Forrest Griffin (19-7)

Height: 6'3

Birthday: July 1, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen 2 - July 7, 2012

- vs. Shogun Rua - Loss via KO (strikes) - UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami - August 27, 2011

- vs. Rich Franklin - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort - February 5, 2011

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via decision (split) - UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2 - November 21, 2009

- vs. Anderson Silva - Loss by KO (strikes) - UFC 101: Declaration - August 8, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Phil Davis - UFC 155: dos Santos vs. Velasquez - December 29, 2012

Comment: If Griffin scores the upset against Phil Davis, does that mean he's back in the mix for a title shot down the road? As long as we don't see Griffin-Shogun 3, I'm good.

12) Glover Teixeira (19-2)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: October 28, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Fabio Maldonado - Win via TKO (many, many strikes) - UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar - October 13, 2012

- vs. Kyle Kingsbury - Win via submission (arm-triangle choke) - UFC 146: dos Santos vs. Mir - May 26, 2012

- vs. Ricco Rodriguez - Win via submission (strikes) - MMA Against Dengue - November 27, 2011

- vs. Marvin Eastman - Win via KO (punch) - Shooto Brazil Fight for BOPE - August 25, 2011

- vs. Antonio Mendes - Win via submission (rear naked choek) - Shooto Brazil 24 - August 5, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Quinton Jackson - UFC on Fox 6: Johnson vs. Dodson - January 26, 2013

Comment: Wow did Glover lay a beating on Fabio Maldonado in Brazil or what? The fight should have been stopped long before it was in the third round because Maldonado took so much unnecessary damage (he displayed a ton of heart but the referee has to do a better job in there). Teixeira is now signed to finally fight Rampage Jackson in January on the next Fox show in what should be a barn burner. Hopefully, both men stay healthy and actually make it to Chicago.

13) Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (32-10)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: June 20, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ryan Bader - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage - September 24, 2011

- vs. Matt Hamill - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill - May 28, 2011

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Win via decision (split) - UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida - November 20, 2010

- vs. Rashad Evans - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans - May 29, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Glover Teixeira - UFC on Fox 6: Johnson vs. Dodson - January 26, 2013

Comment: Rampage's final fight on his UFC contract will take place in Chicago on Fox in two months. There's always part of me which thinks he'll eventually reach an agreement to stay with the company, but if you go based on his own words, there's little chance. Could we see Rampage fresh off an upset on Fox turn up in Bellator next year? You cannot rule it out, but where's the logic in predicting Jackson is the man to stop Glover's streak?

14) Vinny Magalhaes (10-5, 1 NC)

Height: 6'3

Birthday: July 2, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Igor Pokrajac - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

- vs. Mikhail Zayats - Win via TKO (head kick and punches) - M-1 Challenge 27: Magalhaes vs. Zayats - October 14, 2011

- vs. Viktor Nemkov - Win via submission (mounted gogoplata) - M-1 Challenge 25: Zavurov vs. Enomoto - April 28, 2011

- vs. Jake Doerr - Win via TKO (strikes) - M-1 Challenge 24: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa - March 25, 2011

- vs. Robert Scott - Win via submission (armbar) - MMA Xplosion: International Team Challenge - January 29, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

15) Stanislav Nedkov (12-0, 1 No Contest)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: December 9, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Thiago Silva - No Contest (Originally a loss, overturned due to failed drug test) - UFC on Fuel: Franklin vs. Le - November 10, 2012

- vs. Luiz Cane - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami - August 27, 2011

- vs. Augustin Helgiu - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - BMMAF: Warriors 13 - May 21, 2010

- vs. Kevin Randleman - Win via decision (split) - Sengoku 11 - November 7, 2009

- vs. Travis Wiuff - Win via TKO (strikes) - Sengoku 8 - May 2, 2009

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Nedkov suffered his first loss, by submission, to Thiago Silva in China earlier this month. However, Silva's drug test came back positive for marijuana metabolites and the UFC overturned the outcome of the fight to a no contest. In the record books, Stanislav is still undefeated. On the bright side, he did not receive any significant damage in the fight and he's expected to be back in the swing of things pretty quickly. In other words, we should not have to wait for over a year to see Nedkov backk in the octagon.

Final Notes: Ryan Jimmo and Chael Sonnen receive honorable mentions.

King Mo Lawal's suspension ended on October 7. He can reapply for a license to fight in Nevada but will have to test negative in the required drug exam. He is not expected to fight for Bellator until January.

Rafael Cavalcante and Thiago Silva are each ineligible due to their respective suspensions stemming from positive drug tests. Each man will be eligible again when those suspensions expire (May 19, 2013 for Rafael and November 10, 2013 for Thiago).
