Tracking My MMA Picks

DISCLAIMER: I do not claim to be an MMA expert, simply a guy that loves to follow the sport. But part of the gig is to make fight picks, so I will track the picks for as long as I am doing the column. Here we are thus far…

  • UFC on FX 7 Predictions: 2-2
  • UFC on FOX 6 Predictions : 3-1
  • UFC 156 Predictions : 3-2
  • Bellator 88 Predictions : 2-2
  • UFC on FUEL TV 7 Predictions : 4-2

  • Overall I Am: 14-9

  • No bad, but certainly not great either.

WHO YOU GOT? – ROUSEY vs. CARMOUCHE

FIVE – MMA NEEDS MORE WACKY CAGE ENTRANCES

At UFC on FUEL TV 7, James Te Huna came to the cage in a fun way, with he and his corner men dressed in suits and doing a dance from Men in Black. While it didn't air on the live feed, the UFC released the video and Dana White even felt that it was a fun entrance, and he hates that kind of thing. Which brings me to this, I think that we need more fun and wacky entrances in MMA, and the UFC specifically. I always loved the grandiose staging of PRIDE back in the day, and while I do not feel we need WWE level stuff for every fighter, I do think that it has its place in the UFC and MMA as a whole. While not a sure fire thing, I feel that this is something that can not only make shows more fun for the general MMA fan, but can also help with making these guys stars. If you look at the UFC, who are the REAL stars that get all kinds of attention? GSP, Anderson, Rousey…Jones, but who else? Who are the big stars that get attention? Sure the UFC is about the only company (WWE a little bit) that is still making bank on running regular PPV events, but that is because of the UFC name. GSP and Anderson move the needle with regularity, but the UFC hasn't made a ton of stars; while guys like Tito, Liddell, Couture and Brock have all left. Now, again I am not claiming that some wacky entrances will automatically make someone a star, but it doesn't hurt. Cult followings can become more, and they can start with small things, and one of those things is the cool entrance. And hell, it also makes the show a whole lot more fun. Make it so UFC!

FOUR – NICK DIAZ FLAKES OUT AGAIN

Guess what everyone, Nick Diaz fucked up again! Word is that the UFC sent a film crew to his place in California in order to shoot interviews with Nick Diaz for the Countdown to UFC 158 show but that Nick Diaz has no-showed three interviews thus far. Dana White noted that it will be difficult to promote the fight at the level it should be if Diaz isn't involved. No shit. Anyway, Diaz's camp quickly came back and stated that several dates for the interviews were planned without his knowledge and he had no notice of them. The reps claim that once Diaz was made aware, an interview was set up on Thursday and that he arrived early and was cooperative. Now why on earth would I believe Diaz of his camp of enablers? Cesar Gracie says he wants Diaz to do the right thing, but he has been enabling him for years, because Diaz acts like a child and Gracie allows it. The Scrap Packers allow it, and they just let Diaz do what ever, whether it is good for him or not. Listen, I don't want Diaz to be the dancing bear and do ridiculous things, I just want him to do his job. He signed a contract, so you train, you do the required media for the fight, you make weight, you show up for the fight, and you PISS CLEAN. Unfortunately Diaz has had issues with all of these in the past. What a waste of talent.

THREE – UFC on FUEL TV 7 (QUICK THOUGHTS)

  • Matthew Riddle defeated Che Mills via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27): Matthew Riddle defeated Che Mills in the opening bout on the FUEL TV broadcast, and truth be told, this went about as I expected. Some people have this odd opinion that Mills is a great fighter, and it simply isn't the case. Not that Riddle is a great fighter, but I figured this would be about how the fight went down, and that's what happened. Riddle moves to 8-3, and continues to be completely mediocre.

  • James Te Huna defeated Ryan Jimmo via unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-28): James Te Huna defeated Ryan Jimmo in the second bout, and while I picked THE TUNA, I knew he'd have to take it into deep waters to win the fight. Jimmo nearly did what I feared he could do, which was finish things early, but THE TUNA weathered the storm, and was able to take control and grind out a hard fought victory. This was a good win considering how hyped Jimmo had become in some circles.

  • Gunnar Nelson defeated Jorge Santiago via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27): I think that Gunnar Nelson is completely overrated, and even though he won, I still think he is. While I picked Jorge Santiago, nelson winning wasn't a complete surprise, but I do not see all the hype behind the guy. Santiago fought hard, and seemed to have a chance at times, but the man is just NOT a UFC fighter. I mean, loss to Nelson, loss to Maia at 136, loss to Stann at 130, losses at UFC Fight Night 6 and 7 in 2006 to Leban and belcher; why do they keep bringing this guy back? His last UFC win was Fight Night 5 back in 2006 against Justin Levens. Levens was 7-2 going into the fight, and then went 2-5, finishing 9-8 in 2007 and retiring. Seriously. Call me when Nelson beats someone, and stop trying to make him the great white hype. Add in that Nelson almost ate it at the end, and he has a ton of work to do on his standup.

  • Jimi Manuwa defeated Cyrille Diabate via TKO (injury) - Round 1, 5:00: Jimi Manuwa defeated Cyrille Diabate due to a doctor's stoppage, after Diabate ripped a muscle in his calf in the first round. Unfortunately we still don't know a whole hell of a lot about Jimi Manuwa. He destroyed guys on the small scene; he beat Kyle Kingsbury via doctor's stoppage, and then this fight. So for now, the jury is still out on the guy until he wins a fight via conventional means. I don't mean that to sound so harsh, they count as wins, but what does it tell us about him on the UFC level up to this point? I need a larger sample size on the guy before I can actually form an opinion. But what's the good news for Manuwa? On the record book, he is 2-0 in the UFC, and obviously we'll see him sooner rather than later.

  • Cub Swanson defeated Dustin Poirier via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27): Cub Swanson defeated Dustin Poirier, in what turns out to be a very important result. For the record, I picked Poirier, not because I thought he was better, but because of Swanson's history of choking in the big fights. After a loss, his career saw 11 straight wins, and then the loss to Pulver in 30-seconds. Two more wins, destroyed by Aldo in 8-seconds. Comeback win, and the loss to Mendes. Comeback win, and a loss to Lamas. Yes, he lost to GOOD people for sure, but he always seemed like the bridesmaid that would never be the bride. Now thought, now we can make an argument, because he finished Roop, finished Pearson, finishes Oliveira and defeated Poirier here via decision. Poirier has either peaked, or maybe just wasn't the contender most thought. After five straight wins, he lost to the Zombie, and while he beat Brookins (and who can't these days) I just felt that Swanson not only won, but just looked like a way better fighter. Swanson, at age 29, has really turned things around and is looking great. Setting up a fight with Lamas or the Zombie would be fitting at this stage, as he doesn't deserve a title shot so much as he is really close in my mind. Swanson finally got the monkey off his back, and is actually looking like a possible contender.

  • Renan Barao defeated Michael McDonald via submission (arm-triangle choke) - Round 4, 3:57 - to retain interim bantamweight title: Renan Barao defeated Michael McDonald via fourth round submission to retain the UFC INTERIM Bantamweight Title. Outside of a tight first round, I felt that Barao controlled the rest of the fight, and locked in he sweet submission for the victory. The transition into the head and arm choke was awesome, and he just was able to keep it tight for long enough to close out the fight. First things first, Renan Barao is awesome and continues to look great. Secondly, I hate that people want to write off McDonald already. The kid, and yes I can call him a kid since he is only 22, had a great run and lost to a better, and physically bigger fighter. McDonald, for his age, is already a very good fighter, and showed great composure in the title fight. In my opinion, he needs to keep doing what he is doing as far as training goes, and maybe work on putting on some more size naturally; which will only help him down the line. I also loved Barao finishing the fight, so we could stop the bitching and moaning about champions not finishing. So who will Barao fight next? You decide…

TWO – CYBORG SIGNS WITH INVICTA – SHE'S RUNNING SCUUUUURRRRRRED

Last week it was reported that Cyborg Santos had asked for her release from Zuffa, supposedly due to the fact that the UFC wouldn't be running a 145 division for the women. He received that release, and Tito Ortiz has confirmed that Santos will face Ediane Gomes at Invicta FC 5 on the main card of the show. Santos will now face Ediane Gomes in a #1 contender's bout. Now many have rallied behind Santos here, and I cannot understand why. Whether it was Cyborg or Ortiz making the decision, it was an extremely stupid one. Here is how this breaks down for me…

  • She has no right to demand shit considering she is coming off of a drug test failure.
  • She has no right to demand Rousey come up in weight for fight, because Rousey is the champion.
  • I do not care about her supposed weight issues. Get off the gas, diet down and stop being afraid. I do not buy that she "can't" drop down. It's not my fault that she CHOOSES to walk around at almost 170 and has to cut 25 pounds for her normal division.
  • She is afraid to fight Rousey at a lower weight, because she doesn't want to give up the size advantage. She has made a career of bullying smaller fighters, and can't get her way here.
  • I go back to the steroid issue, which she has obviously relied on for most of if not all of her career.
  • She is stupid for throwing away a money fight.
  • She's simply afraid.

Yeah, I know that this will upset some people, but the fact is that at this time, with her attitude, and the fact that she is coming off of a drug test failure, she is NOT good for women's MMA. She could be, but she chooses not to be. The other thing is that Cyborg could have fought for Invicta, under her UFC deal, as she worked on dropping her weight. UFC is doing this with other women to keep them active. Also, Tito signs the deal for Cyborg with Invicta, and then uses their press conference to push a fight that is not happening. He ONLY talked about Ronda, they never discusses Cyborg's opponent, they never hyped Invicta, and Tito them busted out his T-Shirt skills and had Cyborg wear a Ronda is my Bitch shirt. Yeah Tito, you're a complete idiot. Also, if anyone pays for Cyborg vs. Marloes Coenen II if and or when it happens, you're insane. And that's all I have to say about that.

Dr. Ann Maria DeMars, the mother of Ronda Rousey and also happens to be the first American to medal in Judo at the World Championships, chimed in on things, stating the following...

"We all know she's doing steroids. It's like the guy who gets caught with a DUI and says, ‘That's the first time I've ever drove drunk in my life.' Well, it's possible, but its not too likely. I would say that if you're a disciplined athletes and you can be disciplined enough to monitor your training and your weight and make your weight you committed to, why can't she do that too? Why should she get special privileges? I don't believe in special rules for special people and I think all of her reasons for not making weight are false. I say that because I competed for many, many years, and the thing about you can't cut weight because it might damage your chance of having children? Please. I had four kids and I competed for 14 years and I cut all the way down. To make weight once for three minutes to stand on a scale and someone offers you a bucket of money and you say you can't do it?"

Sure she's Ronda's mother, but she also speaks the truth....
