    FIVE – KING MO: INVESTMENT FAIL?

     photo WHAHAPEN_zpsa9004d02.jpg

    Back in May, Bellator MMA and TNA wrestling came together under the Spike TV umbrella to bring in King Mo. The plan was to turn him into a wrestler, since he was a fan and a charismatic guy, and to let him run wild over the anemic Bellator Light Heavyweight Division. The plan, on the side of Spike TV is a sound one. As a Viacom property, which owns Bellator, you are bringing in a potential star. TNA gets the most consistent/highest ratings for Spike TV. In theory you get Mo onto TNA, he builds a following, and on a way smaller scale, you hope for the Brock Lesnar to UFC effect (wrestling fans following Mo to the MMA world). But with this there was always one thing to keep in the back of your head, what if Mo loses? Well, that is exactly what happened. And this wasn't a valiant battle that ended in a close or questionable decision. Mo was knocked the FUCK out by a spinning backfist. He should have won the fight, but he took his opponent lightly, kept his hands down, and he paid for it. Most importantly, Mo fell into the trap that many wrestlers in MMA fall into. He tricked himself into thinking he was a striker. Just because you train with a Mayweather and work that style doesn't make you a boxer. MO is a WRESTLER, and like many other wrestlers in the sport, he forgot that. And now, now both TNA and Bellator are looking at an investment fail. Wrestling fans will mock the guy that has little training and just got legit KTFO on Spike TV. Mo lost to a guy he should have easily defeated, in a very weak division. But that is what you get when you settle on second best at what you need. Hey Bjorn, I know you keep saying no, but Josh Barnett is looking really good right about now, isn't he?

    FOUR – UFC RELEASES – DO YOU WANNA BE A FUCKIN FIGHTER? TOO BAD FOR YOU! WE HAVE TOO MANY FUCKING FIGHTERS!

    Last week the UFC cut ties with 16 of their contracted fighters. In case you missed all of that, here is the list of cut fighters below…

    * Jon Fitch
    * Wagner Prado
    * Mike Russow
    * Jacob Volkmann
    * Vladimir Matyushenko
    * Che Mills
    * Jay Hieron
    * Terry Etim
    * Paul Sass
    * Jorge Santiago
    * Mike Stumpf
    * Simeon Thoresen
    * C.J. Keith
    * Motonobu Tezuka
    * Josh Grispi
    * Ulysses Gomez

    Now, the thing you have to understand is that there are more coming. With the Strikeforce fighters and addition of the women fighters, the Zuffa roster ballooned to near 500 fighters. The promotion will be looking to cut around 100 of these fighters, starting last week. It's a business move, but the first question I have is HOW did they let the roster get so bloated. I do not expect them to stick to an exact number or 417 or some shit like that, all I am saying is that while your signing fighters, look around, see the guys that have back to back losses or whatnot and cut the ties then, not later.

    But the thing is that people got upset about this, not over 15 of the guys, no one really gave a shit about them. But they seemed to care about Jon Fitch. How can you cut Fitch? Fitch is an all time great! While I respect the opinions of those that feel that way, I am not one of them. Fitch is a fine fighter, but he failed in the division. Dominating for years but not winning the title means he failed at his goal. I don't mean that quite as harshly as it sounds, for never winning a title, he did dominate a weight class as much as you can. Now, I am going to do something I do not do too often, and that is agree with Dana White. If I run the UFC, why do I need a Gatekeeper that is 1-2-1 in his last four, and getting paid approximately $60k to show and $60k to win when I can being in two or three fighters for that amount? You guys have to remember, this isn't a game of mother may I where everything is fair and gets what is coming to them. This is a business. This is see how much Dana and his pals can make. It's not fair, it's not the pure sport you want it to be, and the sooner you accept that, the better off you'll be.

    THREE – UFC 157 (QUICK THOUGHTS)

  • Robbie Lawler def. Josh Koscheck via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 3:57: Robbie Lawler defeated Josh Koscheck in the opening bout of the PPV. I will admit that I picked Koscheck, because he has been facing a higher caliber of opponent, and Lawler was making the drop to 170. Koscheck was looking like he had the first round in hand, controlling position and such, but Lawler was able to sprawl and hammer away on Koscheck for the victory. Some complained about an early stoppage, but it appeared as if Koscheck was out then back again; but I had no issue with the stoppage. Koscheck is now 2-3 in his last five fights; cut that fucker, they have too many fucking fighters!

  • Court McGee def. Josh Neer via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27): Court McGee defeated Josh Neer in the next bout, in a bout that McGee made way harder on himself by not finishing when he had the chance in the first round. McGee crushed Neer with a body shot in round one, and Neer was showing the effects of it. Neer was holding his ribs and backing off, and while McGee attacked, he allowed Neer to roll and had to settle for taking his back. McGee did with the fight via unanimous decision, which is all well and good, but Neer made a fight of it, and gave McGee some issues in round two and three. The cut to 170 should be good for McGee, better than staying at 185, but he'll have to develop the cardio at the new weight because he looked tired and lost power as the fight went on. Neer has lost his last three in the UFC, cut that fucker; they have too many fucking fighters!

  • Urijah Faber def. Ivan Menjivar via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 4:34: Urijah Faber defeated Ivan Menjivar via R1 submission, which led to people wondering if the REAL Urijah Faber was back. Truth be told, I thought Faber looked great and easily defeated Ivan Menjivar, which I thought he would. The sweet backpack choke by Faber was awesome, and you have to give the guy credit, he wins when he should win. Such sweet scrambles by Faber, so please make no mistake about it, Urijah Faber is a GREAT fighter and is also a guy that paved the way for the under 155 guys to get the shots they have received. Faber has had a great career, and gets a ton of backlash because of how he has received title shots. Since 2008, Faber is 7-5 in the WEC-UFC. Loses to Barao, Cruz, Aldo and two times to Brown. The man is not losing to scrubs here, but again, I can also see why people have the backlash over the title shot deal. Faber looked great, and if he beats another guy like this, I can see him getting a title shot against the winner of Cruz vs. Barao. Menjivar is now 1-2 in his last three fights so cut that fucker; they have too many fucking fighters!

  • Lyoto Machida def. Dan Henderson via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28): This fight, this fight was a fight where there were no winners. This thing was boring as hell, and I have to laugh at the people stating that this would have been the superior main event for the show. Henderson was too slow to catch up with Machida, and Machida was salsa dancing through out, staying away. The fight was very close, but when you're not doing much, that is usually the case. I just didn't like this fight, and while Machida won, I don't think that he deserves a title shot due to the win. Also, I will not pay to see Jones vs. Machida II. I have no desire to see that rematch, and I hope that Alexander Gustafsson destroys Mousasi in April. I'd rather see white almost Jon Jones vs. Jon Jones than the Machida error stepping in for another title shot. Dan Henderson is 4-1 in his last five fights and on TRT. CUT THAT FUCKER, they have too many fucking fighters!

  • Ronda Rousey def. Liz Carmouche via submission (armbar) - Round 1, 4:49: As expected and predicted by most, Ronda Rousey defeated Liz Carmouche in the first round via arm bar. I thought that Liz Carmouche got no respect going into the fight, and showed people that she was more than a stand in with a good story. She nearly pulled off the same submission as Faber, with the backpack choke, but Rousey managed to escape and from there, they went to the ground and when in Rousey's world, the arm bar is coming. Carmouche did well in the fight, and came off well, and overall this was a great fight for Rousey. She came in like a badass, she fought hard, she had some adversity, she came back and looked to have the win but her opponent fought it off a bit, and then finally got the win, still in the first round. If this was pro wrestling, this is about how you would have booked it.

    As far as the first major UFC Women's fight, I felt that things went off as well as you could have wanted. Rousey won and looked great, Carmouche came off like a great opponent and was also a media darling. It will be interesting to see how it draws on PPV, apparently if you say anything under 700,000 buys you hate women's MMA and are a male chauvinist pig. They had a ton of media coverage, and there are a lot of variables; I guess I will go with 500,000 buys. Obviously it could be much higher, and I am no expert here, just throwing out a number here. Curious to see what you guys think the buyrate will be.

    Seems like I am forgetting something. What could it be? Oh yeah! Liz Carmouche lost her UFC debut, and is 2-3 in her last five; cut that fucker, they have too many fucking fighters!

    TWO – ALDO REFUSING TO FIGHT PETTIS? WELL HE WAS…

    Following UFC 157, Dana White stated that Jose Aldo was refusing to take the previously announced title fight, where he would be defending against Anthony Pettis. The reason being that while Aldo's camp agrees that Pettis is the #1 contender for the 155 title, that doesn't make him the #1 contender for the 145 title. While Pettis and his camp are exactly right, they are screwed either way, because this is how the UFC does business now. Rankings do not matter, wins and losses do not matter and we all know this. Look at Nick Diaz and Chael Sonnen. But also, Aldo should realize this because he just fought Frankie Edgar. Edgar sure as hell wasn't the top contender at 145, but Aldo took the fight because he thought he could make money off of it. He played the game, and he made out doing so, but now he doesn't want to play the UFC's game. The fact of the matter is that the UFC isn't the pristine sport that Dana White wants you to think it is. It is entertainment, and a giant game of "how much money can we make," and that's all well and good, if they would admit that. Do I like that Pettis is getting a title shot? No. While it will likely be an awesome fight, he did nothing to deserve it. Just like Diaz, and Sonnen and so on and so forth. But whether we like it or not, that is the way the UFC is doing business now.

    And guess what, after all of the bitching from the Aldo camp, they accepted the fight. Reports say that Also asked for a Lightweight Title shot for taking the fight. Word is he will get it if he beats Pettis. Playing the game kids, just playing the game. And not only playing the game for him, but for his team. Because if he moves to 155, that allows Renan Barao to move up to 145, which he has discussed. You can't hate on the guy for playing the UFC's game.

    "Oh how I hate Halloween. Ask me how much I hate Halloween. More than that. Well they make all us employees put on these costumes like some woman is gonna say, "Gee, I wasn't gonna buy any shoes today but since I see you in a dinosaur costume I will." Then of course the ride home from work wouldn't have been so bad if the kids had actually gotten gas instead of painting the needle on the gauge full. But then again, I don't mind pushing the Dodge through gang turf because I'm a mighty stegosaurus."
