411 MMA Rankings 04.01.14: Bantamweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 04.01.2014

It was quite the eventful month in the mixed martial arts world as far as the bantamweight weight class was concerned. The season changed to spring and indeed, the career of "The California Kid" Urijah Faber found itself in a state of rebirth after his upset victory against Renan Barao to become the new UFC champion.

Welcome to the latest 411 MMA Rankings, and for the first time since 2008, Faber is the best fighter in a particular division. It took him six years, six championship fights and a season of live television with "The Ultimate Fighter," but he's back! The way in which he handed Barao only the second loss of his pro career will be talked about for as long as this sport is alive -- the first ever spinning backflip tomahawk chop! The move is something only the most dedicated of fans have even heard about, let alone seen in an actual fight. Myself, I vaguely recall rumors of the tomahawk being used in an impromptu street brawl in Huntington Beach about 20-years ago.

Barao is out of the hospital and expected to make a full recovery over the summer while representatives from Nova Uniao demanded Faber submit to additional drug tests from the California State Athletic Commission. As of deadline, the CSAC has maintained their silence on the matter.

After the turn of events in San Jose, UFC brass wanted to immediately book the next title fight, wishing to build on the publicity they received (highlights of Faber's spectacular finish were all over ESPN, Fox Sports 1, Deadspin and even the mainstream morning shows yesterday). Official for UFC 173 in Las Vegas next month is a fight nobody could have expected to ever see: Faber defending against his Team Alpha Male brethren, T.J. Dillashaw!

Information out of Alpha Male is nonexistent yet as they are still processing the sudden move by Dillashaw to accept the fight. While striking coach Duane "Bang" Ludwig had reportedly decided to leave the camp to focus on starting his own gym near his home in Colorado. However, it doesn't take a scientist to read between the lines and don't be surprised if T.J. ends up training full-time in the Centennial State immediately,

The fight was awkwardly announced after the post-fight press conference on Saturday and by the time press learned of it, Faber was nowhere to be seen.

These bantamweight rankings will be more intriguing than ever before with this turn of events.

411's MMA Rankings Guidelines

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

Comment: The biggest upset since Matt Serra shocked the world, Urijah Faber is champion once more. But, will he be able to actually fight (former?) friend and training partner T.J. Dillashaw?!?!?!

411's (Actual) Official MMA Rankings

Bantamweight Division (135 pounds)

1) Renan Barao (32-1, 1 No Contest)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: February 27, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 169: Barao vs. Faber 2 - February 1, 2014

- vs. Eddie Wineland - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson - September 21, 2013

- vs. Michael McDonald - Win via submission (arm-triangle choke) - UFC on Fuel: Barao vs. McDonald - February 16, 2013

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao - July 21, 2012

- vs. Scott Jorgensen - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit - February 4, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. T.J. Dillashaw - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

Comment: Barao will continue knocking off bantamweight after bantamweight without any regard for time, place or name. T.J. Dillashaw, Raphael Assuncao, Takeya Mizugaki, it makes no difference. Perhaps the only men who could provide the biggest threat may be fellow Brazilians, Bellator champion Eduardo Dantas, WSOF champion Marlon Moraes and One FC champion Bibiano Fernandes.

2) Urijah Faber (30-7)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: May 14, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Renan Barao - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 169: Barao vs. Faber 2 - February 1, 2014

- vs. Michael McDonald - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2 - December 14, 2013

- vs. Yuri Alcantara - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen - August 17, 2013

- vs. Scott Jorgensen - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC TUF 17 Finale - April 13, 2013

- vs. Ivan Menjivar - Win via submission (standing rear naked choke) - UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche - February 23, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

3) Raphael Assuncao (22-4)

Height: 5'4

Birthday: July 19, 1982

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Pedro Munhoz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann - February 22, 2014

- vs. T.J. Dillashaw - Win via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields - October 9, 2013

- vs. Vaughan Lee - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC on Fuel: Nogueira vs. Werdum - June 8, 2013

- vs. Mike Easton - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

- vs. Issei Tamura - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fuel: Munoz vs. Weidman - July 11, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: When the UFC needed a new main event for UFC 173 in May, they sought bantamweight champ Renan Barao and top contender Raphael Assuncao to fill the void. Unfortunately for the latter, he suffered a fractured rib in his latest fight in February and was unable to take the bout. Bad timing for Assuncao, he must watch as the man he beat in October, T.J. Dillashaw, receives the opportunity instead.

4) Michael "Mayday" McDonald (16-3)

Height: 5'8

Birthday: January 15, 1991

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Urijah Faber - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber - July 2, 2011

- vs. Brad Pickett - Win via submission (triangle choke) - UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen - August 17, 2013

- vs. Renan Barao - Loss via submission (arm-triangle choke) - UFC on Fuel: Barao vs. McDonald - February 16, 2013

- vs. Miguel Torres - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

- vs. Alex Soto - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

5) T.J. Dillashaw (9-2)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: February 7, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Mike Easton - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Philippou - January 15, 2014

- vs. Raphael Assuncao - Loss via decision (spit) - UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields - October 9, 2013

- vs. Hugo Viana - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez - April 20, 2013

- vs. Vaughan Lee - Win via submission (neck crank) - UFC on Fuel: Munoz vs. Weidman - July 11, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Renan Barao - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

Comment: A fortunate outcome for Dillashaw in the wake of Chris Weidman's injury and then Raphael Assuncao's injury finds the Team Alpha Male fighter preparing for his first UFC championship fight on Memorial Day Weekend.

6) Takeya Mizugaki (19-7-2)

Height: 5'7

- vs. Chris Cariaso - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Francisco Rivera - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

7) Eduardo Dantas (16-3)

Height: 5'10

Birthday: February 3, 1989

Currently Fighting With: Bellator MMA

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Anthony Leone - WIn via submission (rear naked choke) - Bellator 111 - March 7, 2014

- vs. Marcos Galvao - Win via KO (punches) - Bellator 89 - February 14, 2013

- vs. Tyson Nam - Loss via KO (punch) - Shooto Brazil 33 - August 25, 2012

- vs. Zach Makovksy - Win via submission (arm triangle choke) - Bellator 65 - April 13, 2012

- vs. Alexis Vila - Win via decision (unanimous) - Bellator 59 - November 26, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Dants defended the Bellator gold for a second time when he choked out Anthony Leone last month. The finishing sequence may be a final contender for 'Submission of the Year' as he slipped into prime position and grabbed the choke, making it look almost too easy. Up next for the dynamic champion is likely a title defense against tournament winner Joe Warren this summer with the winner then meeting tournament winner Rafael Silva in the winter or beyond.

8) Marlon Moraes (13-4-1)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: April 26, 1988

Currently Fighting With: World Series of Fighting

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Josh Rettinghouse - Win via decision (unanimous) - WSOF 9: Carl vs. Palhares - March 29, 2014

- vs. Carson Beebe - Win via KO (strikes) - WSOF 6: Burkman vs. Carl - October 26, 2013

- vs. Brandon Hempleman - Win via decision (unanimous) - WSOF 4: Spong vs. Deanda - August 10, 2013

- vs. Tyson Nam - Win via KO (head kick & punches) - WSOF 2: Arlovski vs. Johnson - March 23, 2013

- vs. Miguel Torres - Win via decision (split) - WSOF 1: Arlovski vs. Cole - November 3, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Moraes is the first-ever WSOF bantamweight champ after his dominant win over Josh Rettinghouse Saturday night. With the aid of hellacious kicks to his opponent's legs, Moraes coasted in the championship rounds to win handily. Speed, power, grappling, Marlon has improved with each fight we've seen him in since the start of the World Series of Fighting nearly two years ago.

9) Eddie Wineland (21-9-1)

Height: 5'7

Birthday: June 26, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

- vs. Koetsu Okazaki - Win via decision (unanimous) - One FC: Rise to Power - May 31, 2013

- vs. Yoshiro Maeda - Win via technical submission (triangle choke) - DREAM 18 - December 31, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Masakatsu Ueda - One FC 15: Rise of Heroes - May 2, 2014

Comment: One FC returns to the world stage in about a month in the Philippines, with Fernandes defending the bantamweight crown against Ueda in the main event. The challenger is 3-0 in the company while Bibiano is on a seven fight win streak going back over two years.

11) Francisco "Cisco" Rivera (10-2, 1 NC)

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Sergio Pettis - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Thomson - January 25, 2014

- vs. Roland Delorme - Win via decision (split) - UFC 165 - September 21, 2013

- vs. Kyung Ho Kang - No Contest (decision win overturned due to positive drug test) - UFC on Fuel: Silva vs. Stann - March 3, 2013

Comment: As of press time, no replacement opponent (following Caceres' injury, as noted above) has been announced for Perez so it appears likely that the UFC will have to push him back to a different show this spring.
