411 MMA Rankings 05.13.14: Welterweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 05.13.2014

You may as well end any discussion of which fight will be the best of 2014 right now because Matt Brown and Erick Silva's bout three nights ago will not be topped.

If December rolls around and we are actually debating this point, this will be a hell of a year for MMA and certainly the best year in the pro career of Brown. With seven consecutive wins inside the octagon, he's shooting up the list of top welterweights and as you can see below in our latest edition of the 411 MMA Rankings, there's not too many other fighters standing between him and a UFC title fight.

Even when Georges St. Pierre was active and champ, there were rarely this number of quality contenders in the mix. But, if Johny Hendricks is going to make a run of his own as the top fighter at 170-pounds, this list will thin out over the next year. That process may start later this month in Las Vegas at UFC 173 when Robbie Lawler returns from his loss to Hendricks to take on Jake Ellenberger. Following that will see Rory MacDonald and Tyron Woodley lock horns in Canada next month, meanwhile Hector Lombard and "Stun Gun" Kim await to sign for their next fights, too.

Elsewhere in the MMA scene, both Bellator and the World Series of Fighting recently crowned new welterweight champions. The former saw Douglas Lima take out Rick Hawn and the latter, Rousimar Palhares submitted Steve Carl. Lima remains a versatile and dangerous young welterweight who should be among the best for many years ago come. For Palhares, he's a bit older at 34-years-old and aside from healing his image as a wild competitor (for not releasing fight-ending submission holds at times), he is still trying to prove he's more than a one-dimensional fighter. Down the road in WSOF, either Jon Fitch or Jake Shields will hope to stop Palhares, but that's a tale for a bother day.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

411's Official MMA Rankings

Welterweight Division

1) Johny Hendricks (16-2)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: September 12, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Robbie Lawler - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler - March 15, 2014

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 167: St. Pierre vs. Hendricks - November 16, 2013

- vs. Carlos Condit - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 158: St. Pierre vs. Diaz - March 16, 2013

- vs. Martin Kampmann - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit - November 17, 2012

- vs. Josh Koscheck - Win via decision (split) - UFC on Fox 3: Diaz vs. Miller - May 5, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Without a loss for worthy contenders, Hendricks is looking at a late-2014 return following bicep surgery about two months back. He's looking at a title fight with one of these men -- Tyron Woodley, Matt Brown, Rory MacDonald and even perhaps, Nick Diaz.

2) "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler (22-10, 1 NC)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: March 20, 1982

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Jake Ellenberger - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

Comment: Lawler returns to action to fight Jake Ellenberger in 11 days, looking to bounce back from his first loss in nearly two years.

3) Tyron Woodley (13-2)

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Carlos Condit - Win via TKO (injury) - UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler - March 15, 2014

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Rory MacDonald - UFC 174: Johnson vs. Bagautinov - June 14, 2014

Comment: In a match-up that may determine the next title contender, Woodley will meet Canada's own Rory MacDonald at UFC 174 in Vancouver next month. Should Tyron be able to win, this means he'll have defeated two legitimate top-five welterweights -- something only champion Johny Hendricks has done since 2013.

4) "Stun Gun" Dong Hyun Kim (19-2-1, 1 NC)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: November 17, 1981

- vs. Paulo Thiago - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC in China: Franklin vs. Le - November 10, 2012

- vs. Demian Maia - Loss via TKO (injury) - UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen 2 - July 7, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

5) Matt "The Immortal" Brown (19-11)

Height: 6'0

Birthday: January 10, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Erick Silva - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva - May 10, 2014

- vs. Mike Pyle - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen - August 17, 2013

- vs. Luis Ramos - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida - June 22, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Brown secured his seventh consecutive UFC victory this weekend and did so in glorious fashion as he defeated Erick Silva in the leading candidate for best fight of 2014. After his win, he said he was not best prepared in the moments leading up to the fight and it took him a bit longer to get in the proper gear to fight off Silva. Now, the hottest UFC contender awaits word on who his next opponent will be. It appears unlikely he will get a title fight in 2014 unless he gets back in the octagon before the end of summer.

6) Carlos Condit (29-8)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: April 26, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tyron Woodley - Loss via TKO (injury) - UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler - March 15, 2014

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit - November 17, 2012

- vs. Nick Diaz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit - February 4, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

7) Rory MacDonald (16-2)

Height: 6'0

Birthday: July 22, 1989

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Demian Maia - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann - February 22, 2014

- vs. Robbie Lawler - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 167: St. Pierre vs. Hendricks - November 16, 2013

- vs. Jake Ellenberger - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 8: Johnson vs. Moraga - July 27, 2013

- vs. B.J. Penn - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 5: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

- vs. Che Mills - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Tyron Woodley - UFC 174: Johnson vs. Bagautinov - June 14, 2014

Comment: It may be a bit awkward to phrase it like this, but Rory MacDonald must avoid becoming another Michael Bisping in his next fight in June. In November, he was capable of becoming the next championship contender but lost to Robbie Lawler. Now, he'll be in a similar position against Tyron Woodley in Vancouver and with an impressive performance, may cement his first UFC title fight.

8) Hector Lombard (34-4-1)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: February 2, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jake Shields - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler - March 15, 2014

- vs. Nate Marquardt - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 166: Velasquez vs. dos Santos 3 - October 19, 2013

- vs Yushin Okami - Loss via decision (split) - UFC on Fuel TV 8: Silva vs. Stann - March 3, 2013

- vs. Rousimar Palhares - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC on FX: Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson - December 14, 2012

- vs. Tim Boetsch - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao - July 21, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: UFC President Dana White name-dropped Hector Lombard as a potential opponent for Matt Brown later this year and if it comes to fruition, I cannot wait!

9) Ben Askren (12-0)

Height: 5'10

Birthday: July 18, 1984

Currently Fighting With: One FC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Andrey Koreshkov - Win via TKO (strikes) - Bellator 97 - July 31, 2013

- vs. Karl Amoussou - Win via TKO (doctor stoppage) - Bellator 86 - January 24, 2013

- vs. Douglas Lima - Win via decision (unanimous) - Bellator 64 - April 7, 2012

- vs. Jay Hieron - Win via decision (split) - Bellator 56 - October 29, 2011

- vs. Nick Thompson - Win via decision (unanimous) - Bellator 40 - April 9, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Bakhtiyar Abbasov - One FC 16 - May 30, 2014

Comment: Askren's first opponent in One FC is official as he'll take on (11-2) Bakhtiyar Abbasov in Singapore this month. Abbasov is a natural middleweight from Azerbaijan who has an active nine fight win streak with eight finishes.

10) Douglas Lima (26-5)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: January 5, 1988

Currently Fighting With: Bellator MMA

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Rick Hawn - Win via TKO (corner stoppage) - Bellator 117 - April 18, 2014

- vs. Ben Saunders - Win via KO (head kick) - Bellator 100 - September 20, 2013

- vs. Bryan Baker - Win via KO (punch) - Bellator 90 - February 21, 2013

- vs. Michail Tsarev - Win via TKO (leg kicks) - Bellator 86 - January 24, 2013

- vs. Jacob Ortiz - Win via TKO (strikes) - Bellator 79 - November 2, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: As his younger brother Dhiego can be seen on the new TUF season airing on Fox Sports 1, big brother Douglas is the new Bellator welterweight champion. He put a beat down on Rick Hawn to the point that his corner was forced to put a stop to the fight for fear of injury. Lima is now waiting to see who his first challenger will be when season 10 semifinalists Andrey Koreshkov and Adam McDonough square off later this year.

11) Tarec "Sponge" Saffiedine (15-3)

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Saffiedine had been scheduled to fight Jake Ellenberger last month but a training injury forced a change of plans. Ellenberger is now fighting Lawler this month while Tarec is still on the mend from the undisclosed injury.

12) Jake Ellenberger (29-7)

Height: 5'11

Birthday: March 28, 1985

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Rory MacDonald - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 8: Johnson vs. Moraga - July 27, 2013

- vs. Nate Marquardt - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 158: St. Pierre vs. Diaz - March 16, 2013

- vs. Jay Hieron - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on FX: Browne vs. Bigfoot - October 5, 2012

- vs. Martin Kampmann - Loss via KO (knees) - TUF 15 Finale - June 1, 2012

- vs. Diego Sanchez - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fuel: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger - February 15, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Robbie Lawler - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Jon Fitch - WSOF 11 - July 5, 2014

Comment: Shields was cut by the UFC last month and quickly signed with UFC's "minor-league affiliate," the World Series of Fighting. He's expected to debut on July 5 in a fight with Jon Fitch.

14) Rousimar Palhares (16-6)

Height: 5'8

Birthday: February 20, 1980

Currently Fighting With: World Series of Fighting

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Steve Carl - Win via submission (inverted heel hook) - WSOF 9 - March 29, 2014

- vs. Mike Pierce - Win via submission (heel hook) - UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields - October 9, 2013
