411 MMA Rankings 6.03.14: Middleweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 06.03.2014

Welcome back to the 411 MMA Rankings and business is certainly picking up in the middleweight division, the topic of our judgment this week.

While most of the headlines have revolved around Wanderlei Silva's questionable motives for not taking a drug test to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the odds he never competes again in the octagon are great. His spot at next month's big UFC card instead goes to Vitor Belfort who will now challenge Chael Sonnen in a battle of men who were regular users of testosterone replacement therapy in the past. What all this means for Chris Weidman (or Lyoto Machida) and the middleweight championship is not clear because honestly, neither Belfort or Sonnen have been a factor in this division over the past year until now.

Men who have been of significant importance at 185-pounds have been impressing in recent months as Luke Rockhold, Gegard Mousasi and Tim Kennedy all have done. With wins over Tim Boetsch, Mark Munoz and Michael Bisping, respectively, they are all looking to jump over one another to get into the prime real estate of next title contender.

Focusing on Bellator, their middleweight division took a hit thanks to the odd booking where champion Alexander Shlemenko competed at light heavyweight against Tito Ortiz. The UFC Hall of Famer secured a rare win which means Shlemenko suffered his first loss in nearly four years, back when Hector Lombard bested him in a decision. Does the loss make him any less of a dangerous fighter in this division? In the cage, probably not. But, we're talking about hypotheticals and it doesn't matter who the person is that loses to Ortiz, you lose to Tito at this point, people care a little less about your career. See Ryan Bader.

Back to the biggest middleweight fight of the summer, that bout is coming up on July 5th when the best overall fighter in the division, Chris Weidman puts his UFC crown on the line against Lyoto Machida. It's an intriguing match-up of styles (as most Machida fights are) and Weidman's last two career defining performances each ended in controversial fashion. His first win, the historic upset over Anderson Silva, took advantage of "The Spider's" lackadaisical style while the second ended when Weidman's check of a leg kick broke Silva's leg. Now, Lyoto will try to solve the Weidman puzzle fresh off his two impressive wins at 185-pounds.

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

It was the former Strikeforce champion's first win via submission in nearly four years. It's unclear who he will match up against next but he called out both Michael Bisping and Vitor Belfort following his win.

- vs. Maiquel Falcao - Win via KO (strikes) - Bellator 88 - February 7, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment In perhaps the oddest fight this year concerning any of these middleweights, reigning Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko lost last month to Tito Ortiz in a fight at 205-pounds. Ortiz was gigantic compared to the Russian and finished him in under three minutes. It begs the question why exactly did Bellator put one of their champions in such a position where this outcome was even a possibility. Shlemenko remains the middleweight champion and figures to next defend his title against the winner between Brett Cooper and Brandon Halsey (their tournament finals bout takes place in July.

- vs. Rodney Wallace - Win via KO (punch) - KSW 19 - May 12, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Poland's most famous MMA fighter, Mamed Khalidov, earned his ninth consecutive win last month. He submitted former UFC and Bellator fighter Maiquel Falcao with a first round armbar. In fact, of those nine wins, seven have come via submissions and two by KO/TKO. It's unlikely he will be coming to the U.S. anytime soon, but he remains the best middleweight in Europe.

13) C.B. Dolloway (15-5)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: August 10, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

vs. Francis Carmont - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Mousasi vs. Munoz - May 31, 2014

- vs. Cezar Ferreira - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson 2 - March 23, 2014

- vs. Jason Miller - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 146 - May 26, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: C.B. will be 31-years-old this summer and since he entered the UFC as a prospect with a 6-0 record, he's seen his fair share of highs and lows. His current two-fight win streak is now the fourth different occasion he has had a winning streak. What that also means is he has lost five times, disrupting the momentum of all those wins. He's 9-5 overall in the octagon but it's no hyperbole to say he's better than he has ever been in wake off is last two performances, a knockout of Cezar Ferreira and this weekend's decision win in Berlin over Francis Carmont.

14) Yoel Romero (8-1)

Height: 5'10

Birthday: April 30, 1977

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Brad Tavares - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne - April 19, 2014

- vs. Derek Brunson - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Philippou - January 15, 2014

- vs. Ronny Markes - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC: Fight for the Troops 3 - November 6, 2013

- vs. Clifford Starks - Win via KO (flying knee) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez - April 20, 2013

- vs. Rafael Cavalcante - Loss via KO (strikes) - Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov - September 10, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: In another impressive performance, 37-year-old Olympic silver medalist judoka Yoel Romero dominated Brad Tavares en route to a three-round unanimous decision victory. Showing impressive striking and grappling…and a hell of a gas tank, Romero remains undefeated in the UFC and looks to be the hottest contender not in the top 10 right now.

15) Mark Munoz (13-5)

Height: 6'0

Birthday: February 19, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Gegard Mousasi - Loss via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC Fight Night: Munoz vs. Mousasi - May 31, 2014

- vs. Lyoto Machida - Loss via KO (head kick) - UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Munoz - October 26, 2013

- vs. Tim Boetsch - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman - July 6, 2013

- vs. Chris Weidman - Loss via KO (elbow and punches) - UFC on Fuel: Munoz vs. Weidman - July 11, 2012

- vs. Chris Leben - Win via TKO (corner stoppage) - UFC 138: Leben vs. Munoz - November 5, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Closing Comments: Thales Leites, Costas Philippou and Francis Carmont received additional votes.
