411 MMA Rankings 06.24.14: Pound for Pound
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 06.24.2014

Summer has arrived and with it, the season where many of the fighters on our pound-for-pound list will compete this year. The 411 MMA Rankings are a place to debate the best fighters of today and with so much change over the past 18 months, it's almost a weird situation to get a grip on. Anderson Silva and Renan Barao are among the best in the world who have fallen, while we have to find ways to judge oft-injured people like Anthony Pettis and Cain Velasquez. Then there's the best female fighter in the world, Ronda Rousey and the universally recognized top two male fighters in Jon Jones and Jose Aldo.

The P4P discussion is all for fun and trying to argue why T.J. Dillashaw falls where he does when we can only sincerely judge him based on the most impressive five rounds of his life. At the same time, a guy like Frankie Edgar persists here as he remains one of the best fighters at 155-pounds and below, weeks before he gets a third opportunity to beat all-time great B.J. Penn (this time, at featherweight).

Tell us why we messed up, explain why you may agree, accuse us of bias or stupidity, but it's impossible to be wrong in the pound-for-pound rankings.

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

2) Jose Aldo (24-1)

Height: 5'7

Birthday: September 9, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ricardo Lamas - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 169: Barao vs. Faber 2 - February 1, 2014

- vs. Chan Sung Jung - WIn via TKO (strikes) - UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie - August 3, 2013

- vs. Frankie Edgar - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar - February 2, 2013

- vs. Chad Mendes - Win via KO (knee) - UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes - January 14, 2012

- vs. Kenny Florian - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard 3 - October 8, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Chad Mendes - UFC 176: Aldo vs. Mendes 2 - August 2, 2014

Comment: While Aldo has been in the news of late regarding his opinion of his pay, soon we'll be able to focus on the dominance he has displayed inside the octagon for many years. In August, he'll meet Chad Mendes again, a man he decisively knocked out in Brazil over two years ago. Is there any reason to believe their fight at Staples Center will be any different?

3) Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson (20-2-1)

Height: 5'3

Birthday: August 13, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ali Bagautinov - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 174: Johnson vs. Bagautinov - June 14, 2014

- vs. Joseph Benavidez - Win via KO (punch) - UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2 - December 14, 2013

- vs. John Moraga - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC on Fox 8: Johnson vs. Moraga - July 27, 2013

- vs. John Dodson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 6: Johnson vs. Dodson - January 26, 2013

- vs. Joseph Benavidez - Win via decision (split) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Johnson maintained his rule over the UFC's flyweight division with a five-round win over Ali Bagautinov earlier this month. The win marked his sixth consecutive win as he remains undefeated as a 125-pounder and shows no signs of slowing down. It's unclear who Johnson's next opponent may be but if logic is in the picture, it should be a rematch with John Dodson. After their closer-than-usual (for a Demetrious Johnson title bout) fight last January, Dodson has reeled off a pair of wins and frankly, there is nobody else in the top of the division worthy of getting the shot first.

4) Cain Velasquez (13-1)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: July 28, 1982

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Junior dos Santos - Win via TKO (strikes)- UFC 166: Velasquez vs. dos Santos 3 - October 19, 2013

- vs. Antonio Silva - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 160: JDS vs. Velasquez 2 - May 25, 2013

- vs. Junior dos Santos - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 155: dos Santos vs. Velasquez 2 - December 29, 2012

- vs. Antonio Silva - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 146: dos Santos vs. Mir - May 26, 2012

- vs. Junior dos Santos - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. dos Santos - November 12, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - UFC 180: Velasquez vs. Werdum - November 15, 2014

Comment: The UFC is trying to affix a rocket to the back of Cain Velasquez this year. First, the heavyweight champion will coach alongside his next challenger, Fabricio Werdum, on the first Ultimate Fighter season in South America. Afterwards, the two will clash at UFC 180 in Mexico City, the first time the company will run a show in the country. Promoter Dana White has talked for years about wanting to break open the Mexican market, figuring it can provide the next boom for the UFC following in the footsteps of Brazil.

5) "Showtime" Anthony Pettis (16-2)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: January 27, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Benson Henderson - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC 164: Henderson vs. Pettis 2 - August 31, 2013

- vs. Donald Cerrone - Win via TKO (liver kick) - UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Dodson - January 26, 2013

- vs. Joe Lauzon - Win via KO (head kick) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 25, 2012

- vs. Jeremy Stephens - Win via decision (split) - UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard 3 - October 8, 2011

- vs. Clay Guida - Loss via decision (unanimous) - TUF 13 Finale - June 4, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Gilbert Melendez - TBA - 2014

Comment: The Pettis/Melendez TUF season featuring the new women's strawweight division is filming now (or should begin very soon if it is not), and will hit Fox Sports 1 in September. Then, the lightweight title fight is expected to headline the December show to conclude 2014.

6) Chris Weidman (11-0)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: June 17, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Anderson Silva - Win via TKO (fractured leg) - UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva 2 - December 28, 2013

- vs. Anderson Silva - Win via KO (punches) - UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman - July 6, 2013

- vs. Mark Munoz - Win via KO (elbow and punches) - UFC on Fuel: Munoz vs. Weidman - July 11, 2012

- vs. Demian Maia - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis - January 28, 2012

- vs. Tom Lawlor - Win via technical submission (D'arce choke) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Lyoto Machida - UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida - July 5, 2014

Comment: Thankfully, UFC 175 is almost here and we can stop talking about testosterone replacement therapy! Gone from the card are Chael Sonnen, Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort and all their failed drug tests! What's left in the main event is "All American" Chris Weidman preparing for his first fight against someone other than Anderson Silva in two years. Lyoto Machida has looked incredible since dropping down to middleweight and will look to put a stop to the Weidman hype train.

7) Anderson "Spider" Silva (33-6)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: April 14, 1975

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Chris Weidman - Loss via TKO (fractured leg) - UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva 2 - December 28, 2013

- vs. Chris Weidman - Loss via KO (punches) - UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman - July 6, 2013

- vs. Stephan Bonnar - Win via TKO (knee and punches) - UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar - October 13, 2012

- vs. Chael Sonnen - Win via TKO (knee and punches) - UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen - July 7, 2012

- vs. Yushin Okami - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami - August 27, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

8) Johny Hendricks (16-2)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: September 12, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Robbie Lawler - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler - March 15, 2014

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 167: St. Pierre vs. Hendricks - November 17, 2013

- vs. Carlos Condit - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 158: St. Pierre vs. Diaz - March 16, 2013

- vs. Martin Kampmann - Win via KO (punch) - UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit - November 17, 2012

- vs. Josh Koscheck - Win via decision (split) - UFC on Fox 3: Diaz vs. Miller - May 5, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Hendricks is in the catbird seat as he waits to find out who his first challenger will be. At UFC's next Fox show in July, we should find out when Matt Brown squares up with Robbie Lawler.

9) T.J. Dillashaw (10-2)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: February 7, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Renan Barao - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

- vs. Mike Easton - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Philippou - January 15, 2014

- vs. Raphael Assuncao - Loss via decision (spit) - UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields - October 9, 2013

- vs. Hugo Viana - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez - April 20, 2013

- vs. Issei Tamura - Win via KO (knee) - UFC 158: St. Pierre vs. Diaz - March 16, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Dillashaw as one of the pound-for-pound best? Hell No! - 2013

Dillashaw beat Renan Barao silly and is one of the best fighters in the world. - Summer 2014

Time is a funny thing.

10) Benson Henderson (19-3)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: November 16, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Rustam Khabilov - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Khabilov - June 7, 2014

- vs. Josh Thomson - Win via decision (split) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Thomson - January 25, 2014

- vs. Anthony Pettis - Loss via submission (armbar) - UFC 164: Henderson vs. Pettis 2 - August 31, 2013

- vs. Gilbert Melendez - Win via decision (split) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez - April 20, 2013

- vs. Nate Diaz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox 5: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Rafael dos Anjos - UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. dos Anjos - August 23, 2014

Comment: Henderson may not be in immediate title contention due to last summer's loss to Anthony Pettis, but he's slowly fighting his way back into that mix. Earlier this month, he was impressive in his dominance over Rustam Khabilov, finishing him in fourth round by choke. With back-to-back wins under his belt this year, Henderson will look to make a third successful return to the octagon this summer against Rafael dos Anjos in Oklahoma. If he is able to stop RDA, it will mark the fifth time in Benson's career that he goes (at least) 3-0 in a single calendar year.

11) Renan Barao (32-2, 1 NC)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: February 27, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. T.J. Dillashaw - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 169: Barao vs. Faber 2 - February 1, 2014

- vs. Eddie Wineland - Win via TKO (spinning kick) - UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson - September 21, 2013

- vs. Mike McDonald - Win via submission (arm triangle choke) - UFC on Fuel: Barao vs. McDonald - February 16, 2013

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao - July 21, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: With Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva falling by the wayside in 2013, Renan Barao was one of the men who benefitted most in these P4P rankings - jumping into the top five. So much for that! The upset loss to T.J. Dillashaw exactly one month ago kicks the impressive Brazilian down the ladder and back into the human realm - it's his first loss in 34 fights.

12) Chad Mendes (16-1)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: May 1, 1985

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Nik Lentz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Benavidez - December 14, 2013

- vs. Clay Guida - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 164: Henderson vs. Pettis 2 - August 31, 2013

- vs. Darren Elkins - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on FOX 7: Henderson vs. Melendez - April 20, 2013

- vs. Yaotzin Meza - Win via KO (punches) - UFC on FX 6: Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson - December 14, 2012

- vs. Cody McKenzie - Win via KO (body punch) - UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen 2 - July 7, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Jose Aldo - UFC 176: Aldo vs. Mendes 2 - August 2, 2014

13) Ronda "Rowdy" Rousey (9-0)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: February 1, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Sara McMann - Win via TKO (knee to the body) - UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann - February 22, 2013

- vs. Miesha Tate - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva 2 - December 28, 2013

- vs. Liz Carmouche - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche - February 23, 2013

- vs. Sarah Kaufman - Win via submission (armbar) - Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman - August 18, 2012

- vs. Miesha Tate - Win via submission (armbar) - Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey - March 3, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Alexis Davis - UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida - July 5, 2014

Comment: We're now under two weeks from Rousey's next title defense and so far, there's been less than zero buzz for the co-main event bout. It's not necessarily because the match-up is boring, but more so because neither challenger or champion are cutting interviews about how much they loathe the other. Rousey is the biggest star in the sport while Alexis Davis has worked her way from the local Canadian and Upstate New York shows to Strikeforce, Invicta and now the championship fight of a UFC pay-per-view. Davis is a grappling specialist, a Cesar Gracie black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who has never been submitted in a professional fight. She is on a five-fight win streak including a a fight which saw her choke out Rousey's buddy Shayna Baszler (avenging a 2010 decision loss).

14) Frankie Edgar (16-4-1)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: October 16, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Charles Oliveira - WIn via decision (unanimous) - UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman - July 6, 2013

- vs. Jose Aldo - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar - February 2, 2013

- vs. Ben Henderson - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar 2 - August 11, 2012

- vs. Ben Henderson - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson - February 26, 2012

- vs. Gray Maynard - Win via KO (punches) - UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard 3 - October 8, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. B.J. Penn - UFC TUF 19 Finale - July 6, 2014

Comment: Yes, 24 hours after the Weidman/Machida, Rousey/Davis double main event, you can check out FREE MMA on Fox Sports 1 with the Ultimate Fighter season 19 finale featuring Edgar and Penn in the main event.

*This has nothing to do with the P4P list, but also on the 7/6 TUF 19 Finale card is a match-up between bantamweight prospects Alexis Dufresne (5-0) out of Temecula, California and Sarah Moras (3-1) out of British Columbia. All the more reason to check out the FREE MMA telecast!

15) Vitor Belfort (24-10)

Height: 6'0

Birthday: January 4, 1977

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Dan Henderson - WIn via KO (head kick) - UFC Fight Night: Belfort vs. Henderson - November 9, 2013

- vs. Luke Rockhold - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on FX 8: Belfort vs. Rockhold - May 18, 2013

- vs. Michael Bisping - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on FX 7: Belfort vs. Bisping - January 19, 2013

- vs. Jon Jones - Loss via submission (americana) - UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort - September 22, 2012

- vs. Anthony Johnson - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes - January 14, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Closing Comments: Daniel Cormier received additional votes.
