411 MMA Rankings 07.22.14: Bantamweight Division
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 07.22.2014

Out of nowhere, the bantamweight division in MMA has become a lot more interesting.

Welcome to the 411 MMA Rankings, we are right smack in the middle of summer and when the 135-pounders are among the top stories in the sport, I'm not quite sure what that says about the entire sport. Aside from that, one of the best upcoming title fights is centered around champion T.J. Dillashaw and Renan Barao in their rematch, set for next month. Past them, former dominant champion Dominick Cruz is scheduled to return to action after a lengthy absence in September. All of a sudden, pending the outcome of his fight with Takeya Mizugaki, the first bantamweight title fight of 2015 looks to be one hell of a fresh matchup.

Fresh and Urijah Faber don't go together, but the legendary fighter continues to remain one of the key fighters in the division. He finished another contender in the form of Alex Caceres and is stuck in no-mans land thanks to his buddy being champion. Of the nine UFC fighters not named Faber in the top 15 this week, he has beaten six of them. When he's not in the title mix, what is left for Urijah to do at 135-pounds?

Two fighters who dropped out of the rankings include Erik Perez and Eddie Wineland. The 24-year-old Mexican contender is no longer a prospect and is 0-2 against ranked bantamweights. With the UFC preparing to bust into Mexico later this year and hoping to create another boom outside the United States, Perez will have every opportunity to improve inside the octagon. For Wineland, who just turned 30 a few weeks back, 1-2 in his last three fights and finished by strikes in both of those losses, he has rebuffed talk of retirement. Recovering from a broken jaw, Wineland hopes to return action and prove he's still among the top bantamweights around.

In Bellator, they have only announced the season 11 opener on September 5 and there's no bantamweight action found there. Cards for the following weeks have yet to be released, so hopefully the bantamweight title bout between champion Eduardo Dantas and interim champ Joe Warren will happen before the end of the year.

411's MMA Rankings Guidelines

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

411's Official MMA Rankings

Bantamweight Division (135 pounds)

1) T.J. Dillashaw (10-2)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: February 7, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Renan Barao - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

- vs. Mike Easton - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Philippou - January 15, 2014

- vs. Raphael Assuncao - Loss via decision (spit) - UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields - October 9, 2013

- vs. Hugo Viana - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez - April 20, 2013

- vs. Issei Tamura - Win via KO (knee) - UFC 158: St. Pierre vs. Diaz - March 16, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Renan Barao - UFC 177: Dillashaw vs. Barao 2 - August 30, 2014

Comment: Right back into the fire they go, Dillashaw will make his first title defense in a little over a month in Sacramento. It's going to be a hell of a sight to see one of the Team Alpha Male fighters headline a UFC as champion in their town. The last time this situation played out, Urijah Faber lost the WEC featherweight title to Mike Brown in 2009. Back to T.J., the big question centers around whether he can repeat his performance from May when he battered Renan Barao for five rounds.

2) Renan Barao (32-2, 1 No Contest)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: February 27, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. T.J. Dillashaw - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 169: Barao vs. Faber 2 - February 1, 2014

- vs. Eddie Wineland - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson - September 21, 2013

- vs. Michael McDonald - Win via submission (arm-triangle choke) - UFC on Fuel: Barao vs. McDonald - February 16, 2013

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao - July 21, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. T.J. Dillashaw - UFC 177: Dillashaw vs. Barao 2 - August 30, 2014

Comment: I don't care if Renan Barao had a terrible weight cut or was ill at UFC 173, he stepped inside the octagon that night to fight and was clearly not the better man in the main event. It will be about three months from that night when Renan gets his opportunity to avenge the loss and regain the championship gold. In the betting odds that I saw recently, Dillashaw was a slight favorite and based on his performance from May, it's hard to disagree.

3) Dominick Cruz (19-1)

Height: 5'8

Birthday: September 3, 1985

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Demetrious Johnson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Versus: Cruz vs. Faber - October 1, 2011

- vs. Urijah Faber - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber - July 2, 2011

- vs. Scott Jorgensen - Win via decision (unanimous) - WEC 53: Henderson vs. Pettis - December 16, 2010

- vs. Joseph Benavidez - Win via decision (split) - WEC 50: Cruz vs. Benavidez 2 - August 18, 2010

- vs. Brian Bowles - Win via TKO (injury) - WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz - March 6, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Takeya Mizugaki - UFC 178 - September 27, 2014

Comment: He's BAAACK! Cruz has signed to return at UFC 178 in two months to fight Takeya Mizugaki. Cruz has been out of action for nearly THREE YEARS following ACL surgery and its aftermath. Hopefully, he'll be fine and ultimately be able to fight on September 27. It's one of the biggest questions in MMA - how will Cruz be able to compete following the lengthy absence?

Despite the long layoff, he returns to the #3 position, so enough people are disregarding the layoff and assume he'll resume being one of the top fighters in the world. Is it a tough expectation to have?

4) Urijah Faber (31-7)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: May 14, 1979

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Alex Caceres - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida - July 5, 2014

- vs. Renan Barao - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 169: Barao vs. Faber 2 - February 1, 2014

- vs. Michael McDonald - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2 - December 14, 2013

- vs. Yuri Alcantara - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen - August 17, 2013

- vs. Scott Jorgensen - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC TUF 17 Finale - April 13, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Despite winning at UFC 175, again against a non-champion, there appeared to be more emphasis on whether Urijah Faber was slowing down. He's 35-years-old and while he may not have been the overly aggressive fighter we have been used to seeing, he's still clearly among the best bantamweights around. There will come a time when some up-and-comer, comes down the pike and beats Faber but I have no idea who it is (he's beaten most of the UFC fighters beneath him here).

5) Raphael Assuncao (22-4)

Height: 5'4

Birthday: July 19, 1982

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Pedro Munhoz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann - February 22, 2014

- vs. T.J. Dillashaw - Win via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields - October 9, 2013

- vs. Vaughan Lee - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC on Fuel: Nogueira vs. Werdum - June 8, 2013

- vs. Mike Easton - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz - December 8, 2012

- vs. Issei Tamura - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on Fuel: Munoz vs. Weidman - July 11, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

6) Takeya Mizugaki (20-7-2)

Height: 5'7

Birthday: December 16, 1983

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Francisco Rivera - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw - May 24, 2014

- vs. Nam Phan - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Nght: Hunt vs. Bigfoot - December 7, 2013

- vs. Erik Perez - Win via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2 - August 28, 2013

- vs. Bryan Caraway - Win via decision (split) - UFC on Fuel: Silva vs. Stann - March 3, 2013

- vs. Jeff Hougland - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fuel: Franklin vs. Le - November 10, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Dominick Cruz - UFC 178 - September 27, 2014

Comment: Mizugaki draws the former UFC champion in his long-awaited return to the octagon. It's the biggest fight of the Japanese star's career since he challenged Miguel Torres for the WEC championship in his U.S. debut in 2009. A win over Cruz and there should be no question that Takeya gets the Dillashaw/Barao winner early in 2015.

7) Eduardo Dantas (16-3)

Height: 5'10

Birthday: February 3, 1989

Currently Fighting With: Bellator MMA

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Anthony Leone - WIn via submission (rear naked choke) - Bellator 111 - March 7, 2014

- vs. Marcos Galvao - Win via KO (punches) - Bellator 89 - February 14, 2013

- vs. Tyson Nam - Loss via KO (punch) - Shooto Brazil 33 - August 25, 2012

- vs. Zach Makovksy - Win via submission (arm triangle choke) - Bellator 65 - April 13, 2012

- vs. Alexis Vila - Win via decision (unanimous) - Bellator 59 - November 26, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

8) Michael "Mayday" McDonald (16-3)

Height: 5'8

Birthday: January 15, 1991

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Urijah Faber - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2 - December 15, 2013

- vs. Brad Pickett - Win via submission (triangle choke) - UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen - August 17, 2013

- vs. Renan Barao - Loss via submission (arm-triangle choke) - UFC on Fuel: Barao vs. McDonald - February 16, 2013

- vs. Miguel Torres - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - April 21, 2012

- vs. Alex Soto - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson - November 19, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

9) Marlon Moraes (13-4-1)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: April 26, 1988

Currently Fighting With: World Series of Fighting

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Josh Rettinghouse - Win via decision (unanimous) - WSOF 9: Carl vs. Palhares - March 29, 2014

- vs. Carson Beebe - Win via KO (strikes) - WSOF 6: Burkman vs. Carl - October 26, 2013

- vs. Brandon Hempleman - Win via decision (unanimous) - WSOF 4: Spong vs. Deanda - August 10, 2013

- vs. Tyson Nam - Win via KO (head kick & punches) - WSOF 2: Arlovski vs. Johnson - March 23, 2013

- vs. Miguel Torres - Win via decision (split) - WSOF 1: Arlovski vs. Cole - November 3, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Unless WSOF has yet to announce it (would not surprise me), Marlon Moraes is not scheduled to fight on the WSOF 12 show next month. Hopefully, one of the best fighters outside the UFC, Moraes will be back in the WSOF cage in the fall.

10) Iuri Alcantara (30-5, 1 NC)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: August 4, 1980

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Vaughan Lee - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC Fight Night: Mousasi vs. Munoz - May 31, 2014

- vs. Wilson Reis - Win via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Mousasi - February 15, 2014

- vs. Urijah Faber - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen - August 17, 2013

- vs. Iliarde Santos - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Rockhold - May 18, 2013

- vs. Pedro Nobre - No contest (illegal strikes) - UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping - January 19, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Alcantara picked up a knockout win in Germany against Vaughan Lee in May. He will turn 34-years-old in about two weeks and should be able to fight again before the end of the year, giving him an opportunity to win three UFC fights inside a single calendar year for the first time.

Comment: Caraway scored the win over prospect Erik Perez last month and is now 4-1 in the UFC, a bonafide top ten bantamweight in the company.

Height: 5'9
