411 MMA Rankings 08.26.14: Women's Pound for Pound
Posted by Jonathan Solomon on 08.26.2014

The 411 MMA Rankings are updated weekly but the women's division is unique in that because the top fighters only see action maybe twice a year, we revisit the women's pound for pound rankings about twice a year. So, Ronda Rousey and company are featured this week and it could not have come at a better time.
The headline for women's MMA in recent weeks has actually centered around the potential return of actress Gina Carano to the sport that made her famous. She has not fought since her 2009 megafight with Cris Cyborg in Strikeforce. Since her "retirement," she has starred in three films including "Haywire," "Fast & Furious 6" and "In The Blood" but the allure of fighting is still too good to pass up apparently. Carano is in ongoing negotiations with the UFC which company president Dana White described as "complex" and if/when a deal can be reached, it's assumed she'll step directly into a bantamweight title fight with Ronda Rousey on January 3.

Speaking of Ronda Rousey, the best women's fighter in the sport by far, her acting work is picking up steam like few others. She was one of the million action stars thrown into "The Expendables 3" that released this month and her future projects include "Fast & Furious 7," "Athena Project" and the film "Entourage." Whether it's an MMA fight or at the box office, there's only one way to bet and it's Ronda.

Past the biggest stars, we know Bellator has kickstarted a new women's division, focusing on the featherweight division. Do not expect to see Carano or Cyborg sign there, but Marloes Coenen and Julia Budd is a fine start.

Cyborg appears focused on dropping weight and fighting Rousey, but with everything that has to happen, it's one of those 'wake me when they step inside the cage' situations.

The Invicta FC 8 show will be shown on UFC Fight Pass live next week with "The Karate Hottie" Michelle Waterson defending her atomweight championship in the main event. She's the only ranked fighter on the card but Invicta shows always deliver so don't hesitate to watch the show if you have never seen or heard of the group.

Lastly, there is the strawweight division and they are about to get the big spotlight being featured exclusively on the Ultimate Fighter's 20th season that premieres on Wednesday, September 10. Here's a QUICK rundown of the 16 fighters all striving to become the first ever UFC strawweight champion:

1. Carla Esparza - The favorite to win, she's the highest ranked fighter in the house
2. Joanne Calderwood - Dangerous Muay Thai competitor is undefeated in MMA and the only other fighter in the house ranked below
3. Jessica Penne - Former Invicta atomweight champion, has finished each of her past six wins
4. Aisling Daly - Irish flyweight cutting down, she was on a three-fight losing streak until New Year's Eve last year
5. Lisa Ellis - One of the most experienced here with a career dating back to 2004, defeated A. Daly and lost to J. Penne - Wrestler out of Washington State, she participated in a Japanese shoot boxing tournament in 2012 while TUF20 is her return to MMA since her last fight two years ago
6. Angela Magana - 11-6 pro record, she is the only person on TUF 20 to have defeated Jessica Aguilar (in 2009) and Barb Honchak (in 2010). However, J. Penne holds a submission win from 2009 against her and she lost her past two fights between 2012 and 2013.
7. Felice Herrig - Team Curran representative reportedly at the heart of an altercation in the house, she's a Muay Thai fighter with a loss to C. Esparza
8. Tecia Torres - This undefeated ATT strawweight holds wins over R. Namajunas & F. Herrig, both by decision
9. Justine Kish - North Carolina Golden Gloves champion is 4-0 in MMA including a win against R. Markos
10. Randa Markos - From Canada, three of her four career wins are courtesy of the armbar.
11. Alex Chambers - Australian fighter, she is 4-1 and will turn 36-years-old in October - has not fought since Spring 2013
12. Bec Rawlings - Also out of Australia, went 1-3 in Invicta and lost championship fight to C. Esparza last year
13. Emily Kagan - Now trains out of Jackson-Winkeljohn's camp, is 3-1 as a professional
14. Angela Hill - Only 1-0 in MMA, she went undefeated in Muay Thai as an amateur and went 2-0 as a pro. She's from Brooklyn, NY and trains out of Manhattan's Evolution Muay Thai (which unlike professional MMA, IS LEGAL)
15. Rose Namajunas - Just 22-years-old, she is 2-1 as a pro including a win over E. Kagan in her pro debut. She's also Pat Barry's girlfriend.
16. Heather Clark - Syndicate MMA member, 6-4 pro record and lost to Felice Herrig in Bellator

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- Which fighters are eligible for these rankings? They must meet the following qualifications: fight at least once in the past 365 days or if they have not, be officially scheduled for an upcoming fight.

- A fighter serving a disciplinary suspension will not be ranked. They can return when they have served their suspension or in the event it is rescinded. This includes fighters who may disregard their suspension locally to fight overseas.

- If a fighter appears on just one single ballot, and in the top ten, five points will be deducted to balance between other fighters who may be ranked lower, but appear on a greater amount of ballots.

- Want to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section? Please include an objective reason why you despise the list, and try your best to bring the rest of us to your way of thinking.

411's MMA Rankings

Pound For Pound

1) "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey (10-0)

Height: 5'6

Weight (lbs.): 135

Birthday: February 1, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Alexis Davis - Win via KO (punches) - UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida - July 5, 2014

- vs. Sara McMann - Win via TKO (knee to the body) - UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann - February 22, 2014

- vs. Miesha Tate - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva 2 - December 28, 2013

- vs. Liz Carmouche - Win via submission (armbar) - UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche - February 23, 2013

- vs. Sarah Kaufman - Win via submission (armbar) - Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman - August 18, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. TBA - UFC 181: Jones vs. Cormier - January 3, 2015

Comment: Ronda is a busy champion but is wishful that she can compete on the UFC 181 show in Las Vegas kicking of 2015. Aside from fighting, she has a growing career as an actress and has become the face of the sport and that does not appear to be waning anytime soon. The fight UFC brass are trying to sign is between Rousey and Gina Carano and there's still time for it to come to fruition and move to the 1/3 card. Of course, you would imagine Gina needs a full training camp of three months to cut down to 135-pounds and build herself up into a fighter again, so perhaps January 3rd is just wishful thinking.

As for her past fights, she has been able to take advantage of opponents' focus on grappling. Both Sara McMann and Alexis Davis were fixated on not being grabbed and thrown around that they didn't see Ronda's strikes coming and both were knocked out in the opening rounds. The point is she has become as complete a fighter, though potential 2015 fights with Carano (a striker) and Cyborg (a striker) should make for great fights in the octagon aside from the enormous business they would do.

2) Cris "Cyborg" Justino (12-1, 1 NC)

Height: 5'8

Weight (lbs.): 145

Birthday: July 9, 1985

Currently Fighting With: Invicta FC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Marloes Coenen - Win via TKO (strikes) - Invicta 6: Cyborg vs. Coenen 2 - July 13, 2013

- vs. Fiona Muxlow - Win via TKO (knees) - Invicta FC 5: Penne vs. Waterson - April 5, 2013

- vs. Hiroko Yamanaka - No Contest (positive drug test following win via TKO) - Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal - December 17, 2011

- vs. Jan Finney - Win via KO (knee) - Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum - June 26, 2010

- vs. Marloes Coenen - Win via TKO (punches) - Strikeforce: Miami - January 30, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Cyborg remains intent on dropping down to bantamweight with the plan to fight Ronda Rousey around this time in 2015. First, she'll have to make 135-pounds safely and compete at least once to convince the UFC it's possible before they invest in a Rousey/Cyborg main event. As of right now, she is not scheduled to return to the Invicta cage yet but keep an eye out to see what her next step may be.

3) Jessica Aguilar (18-4)

Height: 5'4

Weight (lbs.): 115

Birthday: May 8, 1982

Currently Fighting With: World Series of Fighting

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Emi Fujino - Win via decision (unanimous) - WSOF 10 - June 21, 2014

- vs. Alida Gray - Win via submission (arm-triangle choke) - WSOF 8 - January 18, 2014

- vs. Megumi Fujii - Win via decision (split) - Vale Tudo Japan 3rd - October 5, 2013

- vs. Patricia Vidonic - Win via decision (split) - Bellator 94 - March 28, 2013

- vs. Megumi Fujii - Win via decision (unanimous) - Bellator 69 - May 18, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Aguilar defended the WSOF strawweight championship successfully two months ago, defeating Japan's Emi Fjujino (although Fujino's record since 2008 is 5-8). With the UFC's own 115-pound division getting the spotlight of Fox Sports 1 over the next four months, Aguilar will hopefully end up with the promotion in 2015 as she is the best in the division not with them. As long as she remains in UFC's "sister" company, she will have more fights with new professional fighters like Alida Gray or unworthy contenders like Fujino than other top strawweights.

4) Carla "Cookie Monster" Esparza (9-2)

Height: 5'1

Weight (lbs.): 115

Birthday: October 10, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Bec Hyatt - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 4: Esparza vs. Hyatt - January 5, 2013

- vs. Lynn Alvarez - Win via TKO (strikes) - Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama - October 6, 2012

- vs. Sarah Schneider - Win via TKO (strikes) - Invicta FC 2: Baszler vs. McMann - July 28, 2012

- vs. Felice Herrig - Win via decision (unanimous) - XFC 15: Tribute - December 2, 2011

- vs. Jessica Aguilar - Loss via decision (split) - Bellator 46 - June 25, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Ultimate Fighter: Team Pettis vs. Team Melendez - Premieres September 10, 2014

Comment: TUF 20 kicks off in just over two weeks and Carla Esparza will be among the 16 contenders competing for the inaugural UFC strawweight championship. She was Invicta strawweight champion and in her career has only lost to Megumi Fujii and Jessica Aguilar, though she enters this tournament on a four fight win streak.

Whether it's Carla who makes it to the tournament finals or not, the new champion will be decided in December on Fox Sports 1.

5) "Alpha" Cat Zingano (8-0)

Height: 5'6

Weight (lbs.): 135

Birthday: July 1, 1982

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Miesha Tate - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC TUF 17 Finale - April 13, 2013

- vs. Raquel Pennington - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama - October 6, 2012

- vs. Takayo Hashi - Win via KO (slam and punches) - Fight to Win: Outlaws - May 14, 2011

- vs. Carina Damm - Win via TKO (strikes) - Crowbar MMA: Winter Brawl - December 10, 2010

- vs. Ivana Coleman - Win via TKO (strikes) - Ring of Fire 38: Ascension - June 5, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Amanda Nunes - UFC 178: Cerrone vs. Alvarez - September 27, 2014

Comment: Zingano is back! Last year's number one contender to Ronda Rousey has been out of action for about a year due to an ACL tear and during her absence from the sport, her husband passed away as well. It's been a horribly rough 12 months for her but from a career standpoint, the light at the end of the tunnel is almost here. Next month, she will return and fight Amanda Nunes who is riding a two-fight win streak (both wins came by first round knockouts inside the octagon). If Cat can win, she will may need one more win early in 2015 to get the title fight with Rousey, depending on how negotiations with Gina Carano go with the UFC.

6) "The Karate Hottie" Michelle Waterson (11-3)

Height: 5'4

Weight (lbs.): 105

Birthday: January 6, 1986

Currently Fighting With: Invicta FC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jessica Penne - Win via submission (armbar) - Invicta FC 5: Penne vs. Waterson - April 5, 2013

- vs. Lacey Schuckman - Win via decision (split) - Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama - October 6, 2012

- vs. Diana Rael - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Jackson's MMA Series 7 - January 21, 2012

- vs. Masako Yoshida - Win via TKO (strikes) - Crowbar MMA: Spring Brawl - April 24, 2010

- vs. Rosary Califano - Win via submission (flying armbar) - Beatdown at 4 Bears 6 - February 13, 2010

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Yasuko Tamada - Invicta FC 8: Waterson vs. Tamada - September 6, 2014

Comment: The reigning Invicta atomweight champion will defend her title against Japanese MMA veteran Yasuko Tamada (15-8-3) a week from Saturday in . Tamada is a student of legendary fighter (now retired) Megumi Fujii although she amazingly has just two finishes (both submissions) among her 15 career wins and she has never been finished. Waterson has won her past five fights and has finished all but one of those bouts. The karate black belt has not fought since April 2013 but now, will main event the first Invicta show to air on UFC Fight Pass.

7) Barb "Little Warrior" Honchak (8-2)

Height: 5'4

Weight (lbs.): 125

Birthday: August 30, 1978

Currently Fighting With: Invicta FC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Leslie Smith - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 7: Honchak vs. Smith - December 7, 2013

- vs. Vanessa Porto - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 5: Penne vs. Waterson - April 5, 2013

- vs. Aisling Daly - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama - October 6, 2012

- vs. Bethany Marshall - Win via TKO (strikes) - Invicta FC 2: Baszler vs. McMann - July 28, 2012

- vs. Roxanne Modafferi - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - BEP 5: Breast Cancer Beatdown - October 1, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: Honchak, a member of the Miletich Fighting Systems team, is the reigning Invicta flyweight champion and defend her championship last December against Leslie Smith. She is not scheduled for a fight but hopefully with headline Invicta FC 9 (whenever it comes about).

8) Sara McMann (8-1)

Height: 5'5

Weight (lbs.): 135

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Lauren Murphy - Win via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night: Bader vs. St. Preux - August 16, 2014

- vs. Ronda Rousey - Loss via TKO (knee to the body) - UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann - February 22, 2013

- vs. Sheila Gaff - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen - April 27, 2013

- vs. Shayna Baszler - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 2: Baszler vs. McMann - July 28, 2012

- vs. Hitomi Akano - Win via decision (unanimous) - ProElite 3: Da Spyder vs. Minowaman - January 21, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: McMann bounced back from her first career defeat to beat Lauren Murphy earlier this month in Maine, becoming the first woman to defeat Murphy (8-1).

9) Alexis "Ally-Gator" Davis (16-6)

Height: 5'5

Weight (lbs.): 135

Birthday: October 4, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ronda Rousey - Loss via KO (punches) - UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida - July 5, 2014

- vs. Jessica Eye - Win via decision (split) - UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann - February 22, 2014

- vs. Liz Carmouche - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight For The Troops 3 - November 6, 2013

- vs. Rosi Sexton - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 161: Evans vs. Henderson - June 15, 2013

- vs. Shayna Baszler - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Invicta FC 4: Esparza vs. Hyatt - January 5, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: It took just 16-seconds for Rousey to knockout Alexis Davis, shocking everybody with the performance. Davis posed a legitimate threat but never had an opportunity to attack. The biggest moment of Alexis' career and it was over in a flash. She has not signed for another fight yet but she will try to put together another win streak (Rousey ended her last at five) and perhaps get another UFC championship fight.

10) Sarah Kaufman (17-2, 1 No Contest)

Height: 5'5

Weight (lbs.): 135

Birthday: September 20, 1985

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Leslie Smith - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC TUF Finale: Bisping vs. Kennedy - April 16, 2014

- vs. Jessica Eye - No Contest (originally a split decision loss) - UFC 166 - October 19, 2013

- vs. Leslie Smith - Win via decision (split) - Invicta FC 5: Penne vs. Waterson - April 5, 2013

- vs. Ronda Rousey - Loss via submission (armbar) - Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman - August 18, 2012

- vs. Alexis Davis - Win via decision (split) - Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey - March 3, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: There has been no word about a return to the octagon for Kaufman who won her April rematch against Leslie Smith, one year since she defeated her in Invicta. Hopefully, a McMann/Kaufman fight can be made as the two were originally scheduled to fight last year before McMann withdrew from the fight for personal reasons. Both are considered among the top contenders in the UFC and both are known for their grappling.

11) "Cupcake" Miesha Tate (14-5)

Height: 5'6

Weight (lbs.): 135

Birthday: August 18, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Liz Carmouche - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne - April 19, 2014

- vs. Ronda Rousey - Loss via submission (armbar) - UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva 2 - December 28, 2013

- vs. Cat Zingano - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC TUF 17 Finale - April 13, 2013

- vs. Julie Kedzie - Win via submission (armbar) - Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman - August 18, 2012

- vs. Ronda Rousy - Loss via submission (armbar) - Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey - March 3, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Rin Nakai - UFC Fight Night: Nelson vs. Hunt - September 20, 2014

Comment: Miesha ended her losing streak and picked up a decision win against Liz Carmouche in the spring. Up next is a matchup against Nakai (16-0-1) in Japan next month. Nakai is a Pancrase veteran, though she's best known perhaps for her fetish videos. If you wish to see them, you'll find them. Tate should win the fight but Nakai is not a joke.

12) Claudia Gadelha (12-0)

Birthday: December 7, 1988

Height: 5'3

Weight (lbs.): 115

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tina Lahdemaki - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Miller - July 16, 2014

- vs. Ayaka Hamasaki - Win via TKO (strikes) - Invicta FC 6: Cyborg vs. Coenen 2 - July 13, 2013

- vs. Herica Tiburcio - Win via decision (unanimous) - Max Sports: 13.2 - May 11, 2013

- vs. Adriana Vieira - Win via TKO (strikes) - Shooto: Brazil 34 - September 21, 2012

- vs. Valerie Letourneau - Win via decision (split) - Wreck MMA: Road to Glory - April 20, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk - UFC - Fall 2014

Comment: The dangerous Brazilian strawweight was originally going to participate in the TUF 20 tournament but ended up entering the UFC over the summer. She defeated Tina Lahdemaki in Atlantic City and is expected to be back by the end of the year against undefeated Polish fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk (7-0). If Gadelha can get past the Pole, expect her to be the top title contender entering 2015.

13) Marloes Coenen (21-6)

Height: 5'9

Weight (lbs.): 145

Birthday: March 31, 1981

Currently Fighting With: Bellator MMA

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Cris Cyborg - Loss via TKO (strikes) - Invicta 6: Cyborg vs. Coenen 2 - July 13, 2013

- vs. Fiona Muxlow - Win via submission (armbar) - DREAM 18 - December 31, 2012

- vs. Romy Ruyssen - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 1: Coenen vs. Ruyssen - April 28, 2012

- vs. Miesha Tate - Loss via submission (arm triangle choke) - Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson - July 30, 2011

- vs. Liz Carmouche - Win via submission (triangle choke) - Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson - March 5, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Julia Budd - Bellator - Fall 2014

Comment: With Scott Coker at the helm of Bellator, the former Strikeforce promoter has brought back women's MMA to the Spike TV property. Bellator quit promoting women about two years ago, but have recently signed both Coenen and Julia Budd to kickstart their new featherweight division. The two will fight later this year, thought a date and location have not been confirmed yet.

Marloes, primarily a featherweight, had a nine month stint at bantamweight in Strikeforce. She submitted Sarah Kaufman (to become champion) and Liz Carmouche before she was upset and submitted by Miesha Tate. The Dutch fighter returned to 145-pounds in 2012 after veing released by Strikeforce over problems with her camp, Golden Glory.

14) Lauren Murphy (8-1)

Birthday: July 27, 1983

Height: 5'5

Weight (lbs.): 135

Currently fighting with: Invicta FC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Sara McMann - Loss via decision (split) - UFC Fight Night: Bader vs. St. Preux - August 16, 2014

- vs. Miriam Nakamoto - Win via TKO (knee injury) - Invicta FC 7 - December 7, 2013

- vs. Sarah D'Alelio - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 6 - July 13, 2013

- vs. Kaitlin Young - WIn via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 5 - April 5, 2013

- vs. Jennifer Scott - WIn via TKO (elbows) - Legacy FC 18 - March 1, 2013

- vs. Julia Griffin - Win via TKO (strikes) - Alaska Cage Fighting: Tribute to Veterans - October 28, 2011

Next scheduled appearance:

- Unknown

Comment: The former Invicta champion suffered the first loss of her career 10 days ago when she went to a split decision with Sara McMann. The massive underdog utilized an impressive striking attack to her advantage but fell short on two of the judges' scorecards.

15) Joanne "JoJo" Calderwood (8-0)

Height: 5'6

Weight (lbs.): 115

Birthday: December 23, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Katja Kankaanpaa - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 7: Honchak vs. Smith - December 7, 2013

- vs. Norma Rueda Center - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 6: Coenen vs. Cyborg - July 13, 2013

- vs. Sally Krumdiack - Win via TKO (strikes) - Cage Warriors Fighting Championship 53 - April 13, 2013

- vs. Livia von Plettenberg - Win via decision (unanimous) - Invicta FC 4: Esparza vs. Hyatt - January 5, 2013

- vs. Ashley Cummins - Win via KO (knee to the body) - Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama - October 6, 2012

Next scheduled appearance:

- Ultimate Fighter: Team Pettis vs. Team Melendez - Premieres September 10, 2014

Comment: JoJo makes the rankings as the 2nd member of the upcoming TUF 20 season after Carla Esparza. Calderwood is from Scotland and holds a 19-2 record fighting in Muay Thai. In December, she scored a big win at Invicta 7 when she defeated Katja Kankaanpaa, handing the Finnish fighter her first career defeat.

Closing Comments: Holly Holm received additional votes.
