The Weekly MMA CrapSHOOT 04.25.08: UFC 83 Fallout!
Posted by Fredrick Peterson on 04.25.2008

Welcome back for Another Riveting Edition of the Weekly CrapSHOOT!

Another beautiful day in Ohio before the rain comes to put a damper on the weekend. Coming off UFC 83 very few questions were answered at a very questionable PPV. GSP proves that he is the best Welterweight in the world but other than that nothing concrete (other than Kalib Starnes being a bitch) really came from it. UFC 84 is next and I don't think I have ever been so excited for an event. One of my top 3 fighters, Keith Jardine, gets a chance to cement a title shot, Machida gets a chance at another top ten fighter, and the Lightweight title match is a fight to dream about. Too bad I have a wedding and will most likely miss it unless I watch the replay.

Kalib Starnes makes Excuses:

I know that everyone and their mother have touched on this issue but I would like to continue the tirade against Mr. Starnes. Without this fight I would put UFC 83 as an average event. With the Starnes/Quarry fight I rank this as one of the worst PPV events I can ever remember. (I started watching almost every PPV at Liddel vs. Horn II) This horrible fight made Sanchez/Koscheck and Silva/Arlovski 3 almost seem exciting.

Kalib comes out and says that it is a broken foot suffered in the first round of the contest that hampered his fight. If you are hurt and can't continue to fight throw in the damn towel. If he would have thrown in the towel after the first round Dana could have easily thrown in the Vasquez/Morris fight (KO Vasquez RD1) onto the broadcast, which would have made the event much more enjoyable. The fans are the one that pay for Mr. Starnes paycheck and they were furious that they spent money to watch that monstrosity. I respect Dana for listening to the fans and not subjecting them to another Kalib Starnes fight ever again.

After seeing that fight there is another thing that makes me hate Mr. Starnes. My favorite fighter, Chris Leben, lost a fight to Starnes before his last two knock out victories. I remember being angry during this fight as well as Starnes retreated and did not give Leben a chance to do anything. These are not the type of fights that anyone wants to see.

Kalib Starnes is officially on my least favorite fighter list with Travis Lutter and Joe Riggs. Koshcheck has been removed due to having two exciting fights in a row.

What is Going to be the Main Event of UFC 85?:

Speaking of Chris Leben he has been rumored to possibly be the replacement main event fighting against Britain's own Michael Bisping. I feel that this would be almost an adequate replacement for the card. I think this fight would be an all out slugfest and one very entertaining to the fans, especially the always hot British crowd. Imagine the possibility of Leben knocking out Bisping on his own soil!

Another fight I could see being thrown in there is Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami. Okami has not fought since 3/01 and Silva has not fought since the same card. I'm sure that Silva is already in great shape and Okami would jump at the chance to get a title fight. Also both fighters had dominating performances and suffered little to no injuries. While this fight would most likely be a Silva destruction of Okami it would be nice to give the British crowd a title fight.

Dean Lister and Jeremy Horn Added to TUF Finale:

So another competitive fight is added to the TUF finale. I would hope that this one makes the televised portion as well, especially since Horn makes quite a bit for each of his fights.

This fight is almost main event material in my opinion. Jeremy "Gumby" Horn is another one of my favorite MMA artists and I think this may be a chance for him to redeem his lately lackluster performances. After losing 3 of his last 4 hopefully Gumby comes into this fight well prepared and in much better shape than his fight against Nate the great or his is in for another long beating against the always tough Boogyman.

This sets up six fights for the Finale that do not contain current TUF fighters. All six of these fights look exciting and I hope they make the broadcast. Here is to hoping that Spike gives us another 3 hour show to showcase all of these fights. I do not want to completely leave out all of the other TUF fighters or we could miss an instant classic like WarPath/J-Rock which won fight of the night honors last time with Huerta/Guida.

CRAPSHOOT:

Rules: Each week I will be looking at the odds on all the upcoming fights. I have 500 to spend on each event. I can spend under 500 but never more. Picks may be placed from either Bodog or BetUS odds. A pick can be locked in early for desirable odds. Once a pick is made it cannot be removed unless a fighter is pulled. A running Tally will be scored to keep track of all wins and losses.

Remember that odds are calculated off 100. A positive number indicates that 100 down would yield whatever the positive number is plus the hundred you spent. A negative number indicates the amount you would have to put down to win 100.

(BD = BoDog, BU = BetUS)

Now that UFC 83 has come and gone we will take a look and see if I won or lost with my picks. First though we will look at the upcoming fights. Still nothing for The EliteXC event from either site.

Odds for UFC 84, May 24th (Still nothing from BetUS)

Wanderlei Silva -160 (BD)
Keith Jardine +130 (BD)

Odds have yet to change and I think are unlikely to change much

Lyoto Machida -200 (BD)
Tito Ortiz +160 (BD)

No change here.

BJ Penn -225(BD)
Sean Sherk +185(BD)

Sherk looks like a value so far. Let wait till BetUS has Odds

Early Odds for UFC 85, June 7th

Fabricio Werdum -110(BD)
Brandon Vera -120(BD)

No clear favorite here.

Nate Marquardt -145(BD)
Thales Leites +115(BD)

I like Marquardt here for a reasonable price.

Early Odds for UFC 86, July 5th

Quinton Jackson -260(BD)
Forrest Griffin +200(BD)

I like Forrest here. I think he will give Rampage a run for his money.

Early Odds for UFC 87, Aug 9th

Brock Lesnar -295(BD)
Mark Coleman +235(BD)

I don't like the looks of this. I think Lesnar should dominate but I have trouble risking that amount on him.

New Picks:
200 on Sean Sherk at +185

I think Sean Sherk will take this fight. He is a cardio machine and will be ready to take it to Penn. Also if this goes to the later rounds one has to know that Sherk will have the advantage.

200 on Lyoto Machida at -200

I don't see Ortiz winning a single round.

100 on Keith Jardine at +130

Have to go for my boy!

UFC 84:
Credits Bet: 500
Possible Gain: 600

Previous Picks:
330 on Jason MacDonald -165(BD)
100 on Matt Serra at +350 (BU) 4.4.08
50 on Travis Lutter at +300 (BU) 4.11.08

Results from UFC 83:
-100 on Serra
-50 on Lutter
+200 on Jason MacDonald
+50 for UFC 83

OVERALL WINNINGS (Or LOSSES): +50
UFC 83: +50 (losses on Serra & Lutter, win with Macdonald)

Small Success for UFC 83

Wow I already spent everything for UFC 84, I am so excited about these fights! Enjoy TUF season 8 until we get to see the event. Enjoy your weekend!

As Always The One FP

waaaaaaaaaa...it's not an act, and not every fight is going to be exciting, just like the nfl, nba, mlb, and nhl have boring games and boxing has boring fights, mma is going to have a fight or two that may be a little boring...grow up! "waa, i don't like him, he's not fun to watch...waaaaaa"...it's so asinine, folks like you should stick to ultimate knockouts and stop commentating...oh wait, you have that amazing pedigree of having been watching since liddel-horn 2...you should be ashamed to write about a sport you obviously misunderstand....no fighter should throw in the towel because he's injured and may need to take on a less exciting style, he should be lawded for continuing, of course the example of starnes may be tough to exactly defend...the point is, this isn't wrestling..the fighters shouldn't throw in a highspot if the crowd gets restless...a wrestler like jake obrien or koschek should fight in whatever way necessary to win...and for all the crap that sylvia/arlovski three gets, i dare anyone to find a fight that is MORE EXCITING than sylvia/arlovski 2...go watch a kimbo slice fight if all you want is gruesome knockouts, dummy
