Aftermath of UFC 84! Updated ODDS for EliteXC, WEC 34, and UFC 85! Thoughts on GSP! All that and more in the Weekly MMA CrapSHOOT!
The Summer of MMA is upon us! Enjoy a nice drink and indulge yourself in the Weekly MMA CrapSHOOT!
With the first week down we already had a great event with tons of stoppages! My picks did not go so well but I enjoyed the event nonetheless. Congrats to BJ for cementing his spot at the top of the Lightweight division. I hope that Wanderlei can use the momentum off his victory to mount a charge at the Light Heavyweight title.
Thoughts on the Final UFC 85 Card:
This card has to have had more changes than any in the history of the UFC. It has probably had double the changes of any event in the last two years. A few of the fights will be missed, especially Leben/Bisping and Liddell/Shogun. Even with other fighters going out injured this card is still somewhat strong. While it lacks a true powerhouse main event the PPV card remains very strong.
While the main event looks good to begin with, I am extremely excited for the Bradon Vera / Fabricio Werdum fight. Too bad the UFC had to put the heavyweight title on hold or the winner of this would have likely received a title shot. Marcus Davis and Mike Swick should also be a lot of fun. Hopefully Swick comes out a little stronger than his last fight. This is "the Irish Hand Grenade's" chance to step up to the plate. A win here could put him very close to a title shot.
Latest Musings on UFC 87 and St. Pierre:
With Mark Coleman going out UFC 87 was looking like it may be one of the weaker cards. UFC quickly stepped up to the plate. Not only did they give Brock a very formidable replacement but they also gave the card a headlining title fight.
John Fitch is George St. Pierre's last legitimate contender unless Alves can get by Hughes. If/when St Pierre gets by Fitch like he does all the other wrestlers he faces, he may get the dream fight against either Penn or Silva. Maybe a Super Bowl card featuring two UFC champions competing against each other?
Elite XC on CBS:
I am really hoping that everyone and their mother catch the debut of MMA on Network TV. This will give everyone with a TV the chance to see some top-notch MMA action. I can't imagine someone turning the channel if they see a preview for the Kimbo fight, if they step into the Baroni or title fight, or if they see the dangerous yet beautiful Gina Carano. My friends that know nothing about MMA know that these fights exist and are even asking about them. Too bad a playoff game for NHL and NBA are on the same night. Hopefully they are enough TV's to support them all. This is a huge step for MMA!
CRAPSHOOT:
Rules: Each week I will be looking at the odds on all the upcoming fights. I have 500 to spend on each event. I can spend under 500 but never more. Picks may be placed from either Bodog or BetUS odds. A pick can be locked in early for desirable odds. Once a pick is made it cannot be removed unless a fighter is pulled. A running Tally will be scored to keep track of all wins and losses.
Remember that odds are calculated off 100. A positive number indicates that 100 down would yield whatever the positive number is plus the hundred you spent. A negative number indicates the amount you would have to put down to win 100.
(BD = BoDog, BU = BetUS)
Ouch, didn't do so well on UFC 84. Luckily I have plenty of events coming up to try and gain some of my losses back!
Odds for Elite XC, May 31st
Phil Baroni -105 (BD)
Joey Villasenor -125 (BD)
This fight should be fireworks!
Brett Rogers -280 (BD)
Jon Murphy +220 (BD)
Carlton Haselrig -200 (BD)
Carlos Moreno +160 (BD
Gina Carano -350 (BD)
Kaitlin Young +275 (BD)
Gina "Crush" Carano is a bit overrated here. Still I can't imagine betting against her!
Kimbo Slice -600 (BD)
James Thompson +400 (BD)
Kimbo wins, but little payout to be had.
Robbie Lawler -245 (BD)
Scott Smith +195 (BD)
This should be a very competitive fight! I like the chances for "Steel Hands" Smith.
Odds for WEC 34, June 1st
Urijah Faber -350 (BD)
Jens Pulver +275 (BD)
Pulver is a value, but Faber is just silly good.
Miguel Torres -550 (BD)
Yoshiro Maeda +350 (BD)
Maeda isn't going to win but I don't even have enough credits to win 100 with Torres.
