411mania MMA Interview: The EliteXC’s Gary Shaw
Posted by John Curry on 06.06.2008

Gary Shaw is one of the largest figures behind the up and coming EliteXC company. What many people may not know is that Gary Shaw is no stranger to putting on large-scale successful events as he is also behind the highest grossing boxing match of all time, Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis. Gary Shaw recently took time out to talk with 411mania about the EliteXC, Dana White, and More.

Gary Shaw (Pictured on the right.)

411Mania Mr. Shaw, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to join 411mania. How are you doing today? Tell us a little about your background that led you into MMA.

Gary Shaw "I'm doing great, thanks for asking. I was a former regulator in New Jersey, a boxing promoter and a big fan of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts."

411Mania First of all you just completed the first Prime Time MMA show the CBS Network. Tell us how you thought it went?

GS "I think it was terrific. The company is happy. CBS is happy. The fighters are happy. We pulled the demographics we wanted and the ratings were great. I think it was the best show it could be. There is always room for improvement. We put the show together in two months."

411Mania A lot of fans of who watched the show thought some of the stoppages were a little premature? What are your opinions on that?

GS "You know, the refs are in the best position to determine when to stop a fight. I agree with their decisions. I would rather stop a fight one punch too soon rather than one punch too late."

411Mania One thing I noticed more than anything on the show was your willingness to pay both Smith and Lawler after their stoppage. This seems like something I wouldn't expect from the UFC. How else are you different from Dana White and the UFC?

GS "Dana White has a huge ego and I don't. It is all about Dana White in the UFC and what he can do to help himself. I care about our fighters and organization more than myself. It just comes down to this Dana White cares about Dana White and I care about our fighters and it paid off. I had the show on CBS and Dana White watched the show on CBS. That says it all."

411Mania I have to say there was no better fight to introduce casual fans to MMA than the Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith fight. Can we expect to see a rematch between Lawler and Smith?

GS "I completely agree with that statement. It was everything that is good about MMA. We will absolutely see a rematch between them, probably anywhere between August and October. I hope it will be on CBS but it could be on Showtime."

411Mania Apparently you had some issues at the post fight news conference between Kimbo and Rodgers in which Rodgers stated he saw Kimbo tap. You actually had to physically restrain Kimbo while Phil Baroni restrained Rodgers. What happened? Is there any chance we will see Rodgers vs. Kimbo in the near future?

GS "Rogers started trash talking Kimbo, calling him garbage and everything in front of Kimbo. You just don't do that in front of Kimbo. It got ugly real quick. Robbie Lawler stepped in and helped keep them separated. Those two will get a chance to fight each other in the cage eventually."

411Mania There is a lot of concern that the EliteXC is protecting Kimbo Slice. I think there is only so much protection that can be offered in a fight. What is your response to this statement?

GS"That kind of stuff comes from the 23 blogging haters. The guy has had three fights in his career, not 20 fights. We aren't going to rush him into big matchups when the guy only has three fights. Those comments come from those bloggers. We had six million people watch the show. You don't have six million bloggers on your site. Kimbo is the number one most recognizable face in MMA and that is why they are hating on him. They are just jealous. The guy is the greatest striker in the world. "

411Mania A lot of MMA fans aren't familiar with you enough to know that you are also a boxing promoter in addition to MMA. Is there any news on Rafael Marquez? When can we expect to see him fight again & what are your plans for him?

GS "No there are no plans for him at the moment. You can check out our fights on Saturday on Showtime. "

411Mania Tell us a little about the June 14th Card in Hawaii.

GS "It's going to be a great card. We have KJ Noons fighting Yves Edwards for the Lightweight title. We have Nick Diaz, Rafael Feijao, Wayne Cole, Corbbrey. It should be a great night of fights. I think we should have higher ratings on Showtime thanks to the CBS show."

411Mania I have to ask you a question. Why is it that although you receive an extensive amount of publicity from Internet sites, they are considered low priority for press passes and media events to the CBS event?

GS " That was all CBS. We didn't have any control over that."

411Mania With recent information that the UFC's Keith Jardine only made 10,000 for his last fight, let me ask how do you treat your fighters differently than the UFC?

GS "I don't know how the UFC treats their fighters so I won't comment on that. I know we treat all of our fighters like they are champions."

Quick Hits

411Mania Worst job you ever had?

GS "Being a guinea pig for NASA."

411Mania Harder sport to promote Boxing or MMA?

GS "Equally difficult."

411Mania What is something no one would guess about you?

GS "I'm sensitive."

411Mania Do you have a guilty pleasure?

GS "Nope"

411Mania Who do you look up to and why?

GS "My father, who was a great role model for me."

411Mania Favorite Singer?

GS "Mariah Carey"

411Mania Favorite day off activity?

GS "Watching television. Mainly educational programming and the news."

411Mania Favorite movie?

GS " My Cousin Vinny"

411Mania Mr. Shaw I want to thank you for taking time to introduce yourself to our readers and we wish you the best of luck in the future. Before we go is there anything you would like to say to our readers?

GS "Thank you so much for following my career. Keep watching you never know what you'll see."

greatest striker in mma? kill yourself gs.

Posted By: doug (Guest)  on June 06, 2008 at 02:42 AM

you should have asked him why he used to bash mma when he was in boxing. then you should have asked him how much be paid the refs and the judges to GIVE kimbo that fight, and finally when he said kimbo only has 3 pro fights and he dosen't want to rush him him into fights, you should have brought up the fact that Brock Lessner only has 2 fights, one against a former champ and his next one against a contender for the title. and then called him out for trying to hype Kimbo up and not making him into a 'REAL MMA STAR".

And as far as the best striker in mma, i didnt see anderson Silva's name anywhere so i agree with Doug: Kill yourself G.S.

About Brett Rodgers
he says "eventually"

Yeah Sure Gary Shaw like NEVER !

than he says Kimbo is the best striker in the world hahah is he on glue ?

@ John Curry!!

Why didn't you ask why kimbo was put up against Thompson and not rogers ? Cause Rogers knocked out Thompson in on March 11th ! ??

Rogers had the better record --you should have asked the hard question why was Thompson even doing in the main event !

Thats part of the reason Brett was pissed !

Calling Kimbo the greatest striker in MMA is about as dumb as it gets.
Thats the reason why their is so much hate for Kimbo, idiotic comments like that.

I'm all in favour of a little hyperbole-GS is a promoter after all. However, calling Kimbo the greatest striker in MMA isn't just hype or hyperbole-it's a straight up lie. GS cannot possibly believe that, no matter how little he knows about MMA or how deluded he is. Thus, I find it nothing more than an insulting lie aimed at getting people who don't know anything about or watch MMA to tune in. Personally I think that title has to go to Anderson Silva (greatest in terms of pure striking ability) and I'd like to go on record as saying, weight difference or not, he would absolutely demolish Kimbo. It would be both beautiful and hideous at the same time. Beautiful because watching Anderson Silva is like listening to great music or looking at a wonderful painting-it's art. It would be hideous because it would be like watching a man go out to be executed, not like a bullet to the head execution, rather one man being beaten to death. Anderson Silva would simply walk around him, hitting, kicking and kneeing him at will until a merciful referee saved him from further humiliation and injury-his face would look like burger meat. UFC vs EXC anyone? UFC middleweights vs EXC heavyweights-Anderson Silva vs Kimbo and Hendo vs Rogers. I think we know who would win those fights...

In some ways this is the most unintentionally funny thing I've read all day. For all the criticisms I can make of Dana White, at least he's aware of his percieved failings and revels in them. Shaw on the other hand seems oblivious to the way he actually appears to others. I'm not to suggest that Shaw is necessarily a bad influence on MMA, but that he has more in common with Dana than he would like to admit.

Hahaha...no no...Shaw said he's the greatest striker in the WORLD!

First of, I hate being so negative, but I have to get this out of the way.

"This seems like something I wouldn't expect from the UFC"

"I think there is only so much protection that can be offered in a fight."

Now I never conducted an interview and I understand that you don't want to piss your interviewee of, but seriously, why all the ass-kissing?
Some of those questions were nothing but set-ups for Shaw to bash Dana White and the UFC. Why not simply ask him the questions from a neutral position?

Also on Shaw's comment about wheter or not Kimbo is being protected:
There's nothing wrong with building a new guy up slowly. HOWEVER, if you promote said guy as the most recognizable face in MMA and the best striker in the world, you'll have to back it up. If you don't, then I'm sorry, you're protecting the image you asign him.

Gary Shaw wishes he were Dana White.

Funny how he says he cares about his fighters....I've seen interviews were he says he's only in MMA for the money.

Why didn't you ask him why his son was yelling at the ref to stand them up during the Kimbo fight ???

411Mania One thing I noticed more than anything on the show was your willingness to pay both Smith and Lawler after their stoppage. This seems like something I wouldn't expect from the UFC....

Yeah, like giving contracts to both Bonnar and Griffin.

Well, looks like Brett Rogers gets to end the Kimbo hype once and for all in October.

John – I don’t know how these interviews are set up; whether or not you are just given a few minutes and a list of acceptable questions or not, but I thought there was a lot more that could have been done with this.

I know Shaw is new to MMA and maybe he really thinks Kimbo is the best in the world, but for you to give him a pass on that statement was poor judgment. My follow-up after he said that would have been “Better than both Lawler and Smith?” He probably would have recognized it as snarky, but at least he might realize how stupid some of the things he says are. Come on, he just made an excuse that the guy only had 3 fights but then called him the best striker in the world. Which is it?

Also, stop baiting your questions. You made the setup obvious for Shaw to criticize the UFC. Maybe you didn’t mean to do it, but I thought it showed a certain lack of imagination on your part.

You never asked about Tito or any other prospects. Why not ask him about Affliction or DREAM?

Thanks for the feeback guys. If you switch over and read my thoughts on this weeks ground and pound you'll see where I stand on this whole EliteXC thing. The truth is, as anyone who reads my interviews knows, I normally go all out in my questions with most fighters and with the exception of 1 fighter the we normally just talk and bullshit around for an hour or more. Shaw's interview was 15 minutes. See what I am saying. I did the best to hit what I could in those 15 minutes.

ahh, that clears things up alot.. sorry for being a dick then

Keith Jardine did not make only 10,000 for his last fight.

It seems like every 411Mania writer makes the same stupid mistake. It's not like you even have to do research to find that out. Just watch the post fight press conference.

Posted By: KSti (Guest)  on June 07, 2008 at 11:35 PM

those were horrible questions. jardin was still under his original contract! when he gets a new contract he will get more money! gary shaw is a PROMOTER and a dirtbag.

good call guest 5429. why try to make the UFC the bad guy? I thought the elitexc show was garbage. all the main fights had controversial finishes and the commentary was so-so. I'm all about the UFC right now even though the cool kids (lol) all complain about it
