411 MMA Fact or Fiction 06.25.08: Anderson Silva Making a Mistake, Diego Sanchez Back to Form, Jesse Taylor's UFC Future, MORE!!!
Posted by Bren Oliver on 06.25.2008

Welcome to the MMA Zone's midweekly mash-up of opinion - "Fact or Fiction"! Before getting into the column, I want to send my congratulations out to former 411 MMA head-honcho Caleb Newby. "Newbs", who many long-time readers no doubt remember, has recently joined the team over at Sherdog! I predict big things for him over there and I'm not just saying that because he's a jolly giant...

Given the high number of Mixed Martial Arts events this past month, and an equally-packed July ahead of us, the newswire has been working harder than a handyman in the Ultimate Fighter mansion. If one of your favorite hot topics has yet to make the cut, rest assured we'll do our best to get to it at some point in the near future. As the FoF doors are always open to you folks out in cyberspace, you are more than welcome to suggest a topic or two via email for possible use at some point down the road. Speaking of my affection for you bold band of MMA-loving brothers, if the thought of participating in a future "Fact or Fiction" doesn't scare you, let your interest be known by sending an email to "punchdrunk411@yahoo.com" with your "fact" or "fiction" thoughts on the following topic:

"It was a mistake for EliteXC to pull Nick Diaz from the DREAM 5 card (against "Mach" Sakurai) to instead have him face Thomas Denny at the second "Saturday Night Fights" event on CBS."

Moving forward to this week's platter o' pinion, two of 411Mania's MMA writers have cooked up a delicious sampler featuring their thoughts on the "Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale", the Las Vegas rampage of "Koko the Monkey", and a double-dose of feelings on "Fight Night 14". First up is the pound-for-pound best poster of 411Mania official rankings, Dustin James (no relation to the UFC groupie from "King of Queens"). Dustin was originally scheduled to face 411Mania denmother, Larry Csonka, but unfortunately Csonka ran into a bout of tonsillitis. It's still a mystery as to whether his reasoning was a legit medical condition, an excuse to eat more ice cream, or a way to avoid taking on the D-James powerhouse!!! I'll be expecting my $20 in the mail shortly, Dustin. Stepping into Larry's shoes is a guy you can find interviewing fighters, predicting Amir Sadollah as TUF 7 Champion very early in the season, getting choked out by professional Mixed Martial Artists with a smile on his face, or writing his column - "The Ground and Pound - yes, I'm talking about none other than John Curry. Had enough introduction? I thought so...

Fellow 411Mania columnists...are you ready? Then, America, with an enlarged heart and an empty skull, I say unto you the words of my Uncle...

ALLEZ FACT OR FICTION!!!!!!!

1. The UFC's July 19th "Fight Night" will have a negative impact on the success of Affliction's debut PPV (which is also also on 7/19).

John Curry: FICTION. The reason I say fiction is twofold. First of all, I think a majority of people who will purchase the Affliction pay-per-view have a DVR or some sort of TIVO system and will do the same thing I am doing which is watch the Affliction event and record the UFC's show. Second reason is simple as well. There is no pay-per-view event in recent memory that is as stacked as the Affliction show. The only thing on the UFC's card that interests me is the Silva fight but that is all. I think many of the true MMA fans would rather see Fedor's US debut against Sylvia than Silva vs. Irvin.

Dustin James: FICTION. Look, the bottom line here is this. Hardcore MMA fans with no DVR will tune into Affliction on PPV. Why? Because it's an all-around fantastic show. You have the #1 heavyweight fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko FINALLY fighting a fellow top 10 heavyweight fighter who also happens to be a former UFC heavyweight champion. That alone sells me. But then you go ahead and add Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell, Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo, plus Matt FREAKING Lindland...and I'm drooling at the mouth. Sorry, but Hermes Franca vs. Frankie Edgar & Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin doesn't sound as good to me. MMA fans with DVR's are the lucky ones (like myself) because I will just watch the Affliction PPV and top it off with a little UFC to end the night. In the long run this could end up hurting the UFC more than Affliction. In my opinion this is a show that isn't needed and Anderson Silva should be on PPV's because people will pay money to see him.

SCORE: 1 for 1. Can't say I disagree with any of your points. Like Silva and Vera's dip into Light Heavyweight, I get the feeling "Fight Night 14" is also an experiment on the part of the UFC. They're going to be able to gauge how well an event on Spike draws against one of the most-anticipated events of all time, which I feel will be an interesting indicator of how many "hardcore" fans there are in comparison to people who use the term "ultimate fighting" to describe Mixed Martial Arts.

2. It was a mistake for Anderson Silva to take a fight at Light Heavyweight without allowing himself a full training camp.

John Curry: FACT. 100% "fact". First of all, he isn't fighting a tomato can in "The Sandman". While I understand that Silva comes in shape all the time, a move up a weight class is not a walk in the park. While I think he will win the fight easily, there is always the potential for something to happen.

Dustin James: FICTION. He's Anderson Silva! He only needs a week to get himself ready to kick your ass. Right now, he has over a month. I'm sure he has been in the gym training his ass off, and now knowing that he has a fight coming up in a month he can turn it up a bit.

SCORE: 1 for 2. Actually, I believe Silva may have been on vacation when he was first approached with the idea of competing on July 19th. Were the fight against a lesser opponent than Irvin I might feel "The Spider" was doing the right thing by being a company man and fighting at "Fight Night 14", but "The Sandman" packs a lot of power and, while his striking is not as dynamic as Silva's, Irvin has a well-rounded arsenal of kicks, punches, and knees. While I think Anderson Silva should win the bout, and I expect his skill in the clinch to be the difference-maker, I'm not completely comfortable with the idea of him debuting at Light Heavyweight on short notice.

3. After blowing his opportunity to compete in the TUF 7 Finale, Jesse Taylor will never again fight for the UFC.

John Curry: FICTION. While I think he needs some real help before he fights ANYWHERE again, the UFC has left the door open for his return. I can see the UFC doing some kind of road to redemption thing with him but it would definitely be on thin ice if he does return.

Dustin James: FICTION. And I say "fiction" because I just saw a Jesse Taylor interview where he said that Dana White mentioned that he could get another chance in the UFC if he can clean himself up. Taylor mentioned that he has cut alcohol out of his life, so maybe there's a chance he cleans himself up pretty quickly and calls up Dana? There were a lot of disappointed Taylor fans when they saw the footage of his drunken rampage on TUF. Now he needs to stay sober and concentrate on his career. It's pretty clear he's one of those guy's who can't handle his alcohol, or as I like to call them "Bren Olivers"~! (THUMBS UP!)

SCORE: 2 for 3. Look, Dustin, I had a few too many vermouth-on-the-rocks and I could have sworn the palm tree in that hotel lobby was Giselle Bundchen. Must I live the night down forever?

---SWITCH!!!---

4. The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale will mark Evan Tanner's final appearance inside the Octagon.

Dustin James: FICTION. At least I hope it's fiction. Tanner didn't look horrible in his loss against Kendall Grove at the Ultimate Fighter finale. Perhaps his beard did, but his fighting looked alright. Tanner is a credible name and a UFC veteran who doesn't need to headline cards, but can always help give credibility to any fighter who defeats him. I see no harm in keeping him on the roster, unless Tanner would like to leave that is.

John Curry: FICTION. It will mark the last time we see Tanner and his beard in a UFC Octagon. There just always seems to be something about fighters that show they never know when to stop. Look I picked Tanner to win over Grove. Someone had to give him something but when I saw him come out and look like he didn't want to be there and didn't even know where he was supposed to go in the cage I realized he knew this was his last UFC fight. With that said, the money from another up and coming group is going to be huge, looking at you YAMMA.

SCORE: 3 for 4. Tsk, tsk Mr. Curry. "The Octagon" is trademarked by the UFC. I did not say an Octagon. Even Matthew Riddle's haircut thought your answer was in bad taste. Grove beat Tanner up, which is a bad sign for everyone's favorite transient/fighter, but the fans seemed to be into him and in that regard I see Dana White giving him one more shot in the UFC. I feel fairly confident Tanner could run through 3/4 of the Ultimate Fighter 7 cast, so if a few of them are going to be allowed to hang around, why not a former UFC Middleweight Champion who fans love?

5. Diego Sanchez has shown he is again ready to face upper-echelon talent in the UFC's Welterweight Division.

Dustin James: FACT. Diego looked like his old self in his fight against Luigi at the Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale. I would have personally have liked to have seen Diego finish the fight quicker, but I wasn't at all disappointed with how it turned out in the end. I think Diego is ready to show the world that he is ready to face the best the UFC has to offer, whether it be in the Welterweight or Lightweight division.

John Curry: FICTION. I say "fiction" for one reason only - I don't think he ever stopped being ready for the upper echelon talent in the UFC. Now we will just take him a little more serious when we see him fight again.

SCORE: 3 for 5. Anyone else with me when I say it's time for "Koscheck vs. Sanchez III"? Both fighters need the win, as they're in similar positions in the UFC Welterweight Division, and each holds a victory over the other. If not "Kos", I'd love to see Diego step into the cage against Mike Swick or Marcus Davis. I feel his style would match up well against either when it comes to putting on an entertaining fight and beating Swick or Davis would help further his ascension in the 170-pound group.

6. Featuring a record low number of fighters on the finale and a season champion with no professional experience prior to the show, the Ultimate Fighter Season 7 should be considered the weakest crop of talent in series' history.

Dustin James: FACT. This is a damn good question, and I thought the only way to answer it would be too look at the guys who are considered the top fighters on their seasons. First off, you have season 1 which is EASILY the best with Forrest Griffin, Diego Sanchez, Josh Koscheck, Kenny Florian, Chris Leben, Mike Swick, Stephan Bonnar, and Nate Quarry. Then you have season 2 which had Joe Stevenson, Marcus Davis, Keith Jardine, and Rashad Evans. Not bad, but not anywhere as good as season 1. Then there's season 3, you have Kendall Grove, Michael Bisping, Matt Hamill, and Ed Herman. Easily the weakest of the bunch thus far......BUT we are only halfway done!

Along comes season 4. You have Matt Serra, Travis Lutter, Rich Clementi, Scott Smith, Patrick Cote, and Chris Lytle. Not great, but better then season 3. Then comes season 5. You have Gray Maynard, Joe Lauzon, Nate Diaz, and maybe Cole Miller/Corey Hill/Manvel??? This is easily the weakest crop thus far. BUT, then came season 6. One word, YUCK. Outside of Mac Danzig, you had Tommy Speer, Matt Arroyo, & War Machine? Season 6 walks away with the weakest crop of fighters thus far.... until this season came along. Who are going to be considered the big stars from this go round of the Ultimate Fighter? Amir? CB Dollaway? Jesse Taylor?!?! Can Amir really defeat the UFC's top competition or did he just walk through a bunch of nobodies? As of right now, I'd take Mac Danzig over any of the fighter's who competed on this season of the Ultimate Fighter.

John Curry FICTION 110% "fiction"! What is the purpose of this show? It's to bring up and coming fighters who wouldn't normally be able to make it into the UFC's vision to show that they are deserving of being a UFC fighter. Hell this season had the best story of any, that's right, ANY, of the previous TUF's. More than Matt Serra's win, this showed the purpose of the show. Amir came in with a 0-0 MMA record and walked out TUF 7 champion by FINISHING all of his opponents. This is the point of the show and anyone who thinks that the guys on the show should all have 12-2 records or something do not truly understand the premise of the show.

SCORE: 3 for 6. My feeling is the talent has declined from season to season due to the plethora of options out there for fighters when compared to the barren wasteland predating Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar acting as proverbial "Johnny Appleseeds" where MMA's popularity is concerned. I think Curry hit the nail on the head when it comes to what the show should be about, and the UFC simply can't sign as many guys as they used to, so gone are the days of the promotion signing 5-8 fighters who turn out to be studs in the Octagon.

In all seriousness...is there any sort of rule in MMA regarding excessive facial hair? Even though these guys throw hard, wouldn't having a huge beard at least lessen the blow somewhat?

Before you laugh, I believe they have such a rule in boxing but I'm not sure if its for that specific reason.

RE: Jesse Taylor -- If anyone was watching carefully during the Finale, he was sitting with the other TUF Seven cast members. No doubt he has a UFC future eventually...even if all he can do is lay and pray.

It is amazing that Dustin can be wrong in so many ways on just one question. His reasoning in the final question is stunningly bad.

First off, addressing TUF 4 like the other seasons is misleading and pointless. You can't compare established pros to up and comers.

Secondly, TUF5 is easily the strongest crop since TUF1. Nate is 4-0 in the UFC, a rising contender. Manny hasn't lost since the finale, Lauzon just headlined the best fight night card ever, Wiman has not lost since before the show (against Spencer Fisher) winning 4 in a row in the UFC including a huge fight-of-the-night upset over Tavares, Gray Maynard just got the huge win over Frankie Edgar, Rob Emerson just had a win in the UFC, Corey Hill still looks promising. That is a ton of promising fighters and you are being ridiculous for dumping all over them (especially since it has already yielded solid contenders and headliners in just a year)

Dustin is off his nut if he thinks Amir beat a bunch of nobodies. Amir faced the toughest road of any TUF champ save Nate Diaz. Danzig faced Joey Scarola and John Kolosci twice before beating Tommy Speer. Quite the murderer's row. Grove faced Pointon, Starnes and Herman. Bisping faced Rothmaeral, Ross Pointon and Josh Haynes, wow, somebody get this man a medal. None of these resumes scream quality.

Amir faced the toughest guys in every round of the show. He faced the only UFC vet to get in the house, a two-time IFL vet in Gerald Harris, the tough Matt Brown (who just beat Arroyo) and took on the undefeated goldenboy CB and beat him twice. If you can't see a fighter like that as a legitimate threat, then TUF just isn't for you.

There is this same discussion at the end of every season. But will you give these guys some time to mature in the UFC. The reason so few fought on the card was exactly because fans complained about it. So please, give the fighters a chance to fight in the UFC before you dump all over them.

1. FICTION- for as amazing as a card Affliction: Banned has, only the 'hard core' followers of the sport even know or care about it... and the hard core fans won't be swayed by Dana's petty antics.

Figure the average MMA fan has only been watching for 2-3 years and believes there's only 1 brand worth watching (maybe 2 since EliteXC's CBS debut)... with that said, they would only have heard about/ seen big Tim and Andre- when they were both at their worst. Without knowing anyone else, the average fan won't care enough to watch it.

If anything- it's Afflictions own doing as they seemingly have 0 marketing campaign. Web advertising of guys punching fire/ glass looks very cool, but it won't equal PPV buys. Something as simple as - "the UFC's HW champion has lost to undefeated Fedor... twice" would help much more much with the general population.

Incredibly sad that what could easily be called one of (if not the) greatest card on paper won't do nearly as many buys as it should.

Dane,

I looked over all of the MMA rules and there is nothing regarding hair or facial hair. So I guess you could rock a ZZ fro beard and it wouldn't matter. I think you are correct though that common physics would state that any resistance would affect impact.

I agree with Matt. The road for Amir was one of the toughest in TUF history. He didn't have any good style matchups (except Matt Brown) and 0 professional MMA fights. The guy showed me he is an absolute stud with the composure of a seasoned veteran. I think if he can rack up 2 or 3 wins over small time guys, and he can keep training with top notch camps that he can make some serious waves in a fairly thin MW divison (albeit he is a small MW).

Posted By: Bryan (Guest)  on June 25, 2008 at 01:57 AM

To Bryan

Make waves in the MW division......

Then get DESTROYED by Anderson Silva

WAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAA

more jobbers for the SPIDER

Amir has actually said he's contemplating a drop to 170.

The point of the ultimate fighter is to take potential up and comers, put them all in the same place, see who sinks, see who floats.

the real telling ground is the ultimate finale. Like season six i believe, the standouts were, in my ever-amateurish opinion, Mac Danzig, George Sotoropolis, Ben Saunders, Matt Arroyo, War Machine, and a dark horse in Roman Mitichyan.

If you win at the Ultimate Finale, you will continue to get booked for fights until you lose. So you win until they can't afford to lose you.

If you look close at the limo after jesse gets out who follows... CB no chance he was pushing buttons nah not him hes not an arrogant prick

Posted By: Guest#6369 (Guest)  on June 25, 2008 at 10:33 AM

What's interesting about CB is you can never tell if he's gassed due to the fact his mouth is constantly open like a big-mouth bass.

Posted By: Bren Oliver (Guest)  on June 25, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Ha, you can't tell if he tapped neither - lol
BTW - Amir seems to have that "never say die" attitude. He took beatings & never showed any slow down like some of these "veteran" fighters. He's got heart - & CB TWICE! LOL

this isn't fedors US debut, he fought in the states at PRide Real Deal against Coleman, way to do research

Posted By: sofian (Guest)  on June 25, 2008 at 12:16 PM

True. Who can forget Coleman's terrified daughters being handed over to Fedor, as well as Coleman's "play" jabs to Fedor's face after the fight?

Posted By: Bren Oliver (Guest)  on June 25, 2008 at 01:54 PM

first off...curry, what the hell? read twice, type once big guy...you missed a couple of these questions and i expect more out of a kent state guy...a UFC octagon? c'mon big fella...you're better than that...barely....i kid.

-1- fiction - we all know that afflictions going after the hardcore fans and none of us are missing that...unless you're a griffin/bonnar noob who just pretends to be hardcore.

-2- fiction - duh..dude doesn't need to cut, so what in the hell would a full training camp do for him exactly? what knowledge or conditioning is he missing out on?

-3- fiction - but if it were up to me this would be a fact...dude's a moron and i wouldn't hire him to cut my grass.

-4- fiction - honestly, who knows? i actually don't think that questions like this should be asked in fact or fiction...i mean it's a fucking coin flip.

-5- fiction - i'm actually agreeing with curry on this one...someone call hell and warn them of the advancing blizzard

-6- ihavenoclue...fiction - it's unfair at this point to even speculate, though it seemed as if this were the least experienced bunch of the series...but given time i think that gerald harris, cb dolloway, the drunken moron, matt riddle and amir could be contenders...i don't know, i think this is a wait and see...though i've got to admit, i'm only a casual watcher of the reality show and tune in primarily for the fights.

as for the reader fact or fiction...was it a mistake .....fiction - we the fans may feel like our wheaties are soggy with urine, but for elite xc a cbs show is a whole helluva lot more important than some other promoter's card...it's a ridiculously stupid question and only some internet badass with no business sense would say fact.

Posted By: romano (Guest)  on June 25, 2008 at 03:59 PM

The only people buying the Affliction are the hardcore fans. UFN 14 wasn't going to change that. If UFN 14 gets around a 1.4 rating it will be a success for the UFC.

Depending on the outcome of Kos/Lytle. I think Kos/Sanchez 3 is the best matchup for both fighters and the welterweight division.

TUF 7 definitely hasn't been the best talent pool. But Amir alone is the reason the show was created.

The point of TUF is free marketing for these new up and coming fighters. Mac Danzig could have easily walked into the UFC and fought pre-lims or he could have been on TUF and expanded his fan base. Danzig is now headlining a UFN card in the fall.

TUF isn't perfect but for the fighters it's the biggest opportunity in MMA. Even the bottom tier TUF fighters that get booted from the UFC find jobs elsewhere due to their apperances on TUF alone.

Also I was reading somewhere that some fighters weren't on the Finale due to injury.

Posted By: Matthew (Guest)  on June 25, 2008 at 04:55 PM

-1- fact, it won't sink affliction-but a free option will take a few people away, mostly the ever-increasing crowd who lies between casual and hardcore

-2- fiction - if Silva did not feel comfortable taking the fight, he wouldn't have

-3- fiction - redemption stories are easy to sell - UFN 20: Taylor finally gets his shot against Amir - can't be easier to market than that!

-4- fiction - he'll get at least one more fight, probably as a gatekeeper against a debuting guy. I actually think WEC could be a good idea - that's an octagon!

-5- fact - Diego never really left, but he's in true contention again. I'd like to see him fight Alves as a number one contender fight. Since Kos lost to GSP and won't fight Fitch, Diego and Alves are the best choices.

-6- fiction, TUF6 had the least legit prospects. I think that having one weight class leads to a perceived weaker talent pool. Each season has had about 4 legit guys per weight class, the return of 8&8 could help. I think that a lot of fighters chose IFL and EliteXC over TUF now, those were not really options before season 1, this has also lessened the talent pool.

I agree that Sanchez vs. either Davis or Swick would be a great match-up, Anderson Silva moving to Light-heavy shouldnt be a problem for him in my opinion because he is already a very big middleweight. He walks around at almsot 220 i think so u would think that he would come into the fight stronger and in better shape and less stressed from the weight cut, and at 6'2' he's about as tall and lanky as anybody else in the division. However theres a lot of guys that like to stand and bang and that have good chins,so if somebody can whether the storm standing and eventually land a punch with 205 pound force behind it Anderson could be in trouble, plus the 205ers are bigger and stronger so who knows how much of a differance we will see from him now that the playing field is a little more even. Also Amir is still very raw to MMA but he has shown that he is a natural and he possesses a few things that can take him very far in the sport like a solid jaw, good conditioning, decent stand-up skills and reaction time, good submissions, and tons of heart. Really all he has to do now is just get better and refine the things he already knows and improve his conditioning even more and he could be a force to be reckoned with.

Posted By: mike (Guest)  on June 26, 2008 at 08:58 PM

mike, anderson silva walks around at 220? where the fuck did you hear that? to cut from 220 to 185 would be insane, beyond that i can't imagine anderson letting himself go inbetween fights like that...i mean if you have a reliable source for that i apologize, but shit it's really hard to believe...unless you've never cut weight yourself, then you might believe it...twenty pound cuts are pushing it, but doable, but fucking forty???? while it may be possible (though i couldn't imagine how), who in the hell would put themselves through cutting forty pounds if they didn't have to?

Posted By: romano (Guest)  on June 27, 2008 at 12:17 AM

Romano, i know it sounds insane but its true although i believe he weighs more like between 215 and 220, and its actually quite common for fighters to cut that much weight.Look at Matt Hughes or Tito Ortiz, or a very good example is Tommy Speer, that guy weighs around 190 when he's fighting in the cage but he's able to make 170 at the weigh in, thats 30 pounds. And Anderson Silva probably weighs closer to 200 when he actually fights. And its not like one big weight cut, i mean they slowly cut weight throughout theyre training, and then right before the weigh-in they cut a few more in the sauna or running or something similar. And i'm sure other guys have their variations on how they do it and sorry if you already know all of this. Also when i say Silva walks around at around 220 i mean like when he's not training, like thats his natural body weight, but then he slowly loses it. Pretty much everybody under the Heavyweight division weighs more than theyre supposed to during fight time. And Ive heard it many times that A. Silva weighs that much but i'm sorry i cant think of an exact source, but who knows maybe its not true, but he does look like he could weigh that much.
