411's MMA Rankings 6.26.08: Heavyweight Rankings
Posted by Dustin James on 06.26.2008

It's that time of the week again kiddies! It's time to kick off your shoes, change into some comfortable clothes, grab a beer, & read the best set of MMA rankings here on 411! This time you HAVE to get excited because we are ranking the ........heavyweight division?!?! Oooops. I know, I know, all you hear is how the heavyweight division hasn't changed much in ALONG time. Well, I got some great news. Things will be changing come July 19th. Until then, just sit tight and enjoy what will be our last set of heavyweight rankings until JULY 19TH!

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we could probably beat up a mentally retarded 6 year old girl.

411's Official MMA Rankings

Heavyweight Division

1) Fedor Emelianenko (27-1)

Height: 6'0

Weight: 233

Currently fighting with: Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Hong Man Choi - Win via submission (arm bar) - Yarennoka - New Year's Eve 2007 - December 31, 2007

- vs. Matt Lindland - Win via submission (arm bar) - BodogFight: Clash of the Nations - April 14, 2007

- vs. Mark Hunt - Win via submission (kimura) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Mark Coleman - Win via submission (arm bar) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006

- vs. Wagner da Conceicao Martins - Win via submission (punches) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2005 -

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Affliction "Banned" - July 19, 2008

Comments: A few months back, UFC president Dana White went on record and stated that Fedor Emelianenko is NOT a top 10 heavyweight fighter. Then Dana White went ahead and released Tim Sylvia from his contract without even blinking. Now, on July 19th....Fedor will meet the former UFC heavyweight champion at Affliction's "Banned" show in Anaheim, California. Do you think Dana White cares? Fedor isn't even a top 10 heavyweight fighter! It's not like Dana feels the need to go ahead and rush out a free lackluster card on Spike TV or anything like that. Why bother? Two MMA fighters who aren't worth a shit, headlining a new company's PPV. The UFC is just going to sit back and watch this abomination, right? RIGHT?

2) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria (31-4-1)

Height: 6'3

Weight: 231

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Heath Herring - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7th, 2007

- vs. Josh Barnett - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Josh Barnett - Loss via decision (split) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Frank Mir - Sometime in 2008

Comments: Now that this lackluster season of the Ultimate Fighter has come to an end, we can move on to the next season. You are looking at one of the coaches on the next season of the Ultimate Fighter, and Big Nog is bringing the heat with him! Word is his assistant coaches will be none other than Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida. Robert Drysdale is DA MAN, but I like Big Nog's choices just a little more. It will appeal more to the UFC fans and help get Lyoto Machida's name out in the mainstream more.

3) Randy Couture (16-8)

Height: 6'1

Weight: 225

Currently fighting with: UFC (still signed with company)

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 68: Uprising - March 3, 2007

- vs. Chuck Liddell - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC 57: Liddell vs. Couture 3 - February 4, 2006

- vs. Mike Van Arsdale - Win via submission (anaconda choke) - UFC 54: Boiling Point - August 20, 2005

- vs. Chuck Liddell - Loss via KO (punches) - UFC 52: Couture vs. Liddell 2 - April 16, 2005

Next scheduled appearance:

- Wouldn't we all love to know?

Comments: Nothing new on the Randy Couture front. Although his wife could use some re constructive facial surgery after that ass whooping she took last weekend. Yikes.

4) Josh Barnett (22-5)

Height: 6'3

Weight: 250

Currently fighting with: World Victory Road, Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jeff Monson - Win via decision (unanimous) - World Victory Road: Sengoku 2 - May 18, 2008

- vs. Hidehiko Yoshida - Win via submission (heel hook) - World Victory Road: Sengoku - March 5, 2008

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Pawel Nastula - Win via submission (toe hold) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006

- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - Loss via submission (strikes) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

Next scheduled appearances:

- vs. Pedro Rizzo - Affliction "Banned" - July 19, 2008

Comments: Well, Josh Barnett was able to walk away with a decision victory over Jeff Monson at Sengoku 2, but he doesn't get much time to rest up. Barnett will now be facing Pedro Rizzo at Affliction "Banned" on July 19th. Will the fact that Barnett just fought Monson on May 18th have any kind of impact on his fight with Rizzo? I doubt it, but by the next time we rank these fighters everybody will know!

5) Andrei Arlovski (12-5)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 240

Currently fighting with: Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jake O'Brien - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 82: Pride of a Champion - March 1, 2008

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Marcio Cruz - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz II - December 30, 2006

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 61: Bitter Rivals - July 8, 2006

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC 59: Reality Check - April 15, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Ben Rothwell - Affliction "Banned" - July 19, 2008

Comments: And the latest high profile fighter to leave the UFC and sign with Affliction is.....Andrei Arlovski! Arlovski has a huge task in front of him when he faces Rothwell at "Banned" next month. Rothwell hasn't lost since 2005 and is on a 13 fight win streak. What if Arlovski walks through Rothwell and Sylvia KO's Fedor? Will we see Arlovski/Sylvia 4 for the Affliction heavyweight title? Great, now my head hurts.

6) Tim Sylvia (24-4)

Height: 6'8

Weight: 260

Currently fighting with: Adrenaline MMA, Affliction

Last 5 wins:

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 77: Hostile Territory - October 20, 2007

- vs. Randy Couture - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 68: Uprising - March 3, 2007

- vs. Jeff Monson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 65: Bad Intentions - November 18, 2006

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 61: Bitter Rivals - July 8, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Affliction "Banned" - July 19, 2008

Comments: His time is almost here! Can he do it? Can Tim Sylvia be THE guy to finally defeat Fedor in the heavyweight division? Fedor has only lost once in his pro career folks. He is 27-1. His one loss came at the hands of Tsuyoshi Kohsaka and the fight was called because of a cut. Fedor has defeated Ricardo Arona, Big Nog (twice), Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman, Mirko Cro Cop, Mark Hunt, Heath Herring, and Matt Lindland. Can Tim Sylvia be THE guy that takes out Fedor? We will know by the next time we rank these heavyweight's.........

7) Fabricio Werdum (11-3-1)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 242

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 wins:

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Aleksander Emelianenko - Win via submission (choke) - 2H2H - Pride & Honor - November 12, 2006

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Currently unknown

Comments: Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the guy who I believe should be the #1 contender for Big Nog's UFC heavyweight title. Werdum is 2-1 since arriving in the UFC and his 2 wins are over top contenders in the UFC's heavyweight division. He has fought Big Nog before and lost via decision, but I'm one guy who would love to see that rematch. Mir vs. Big Nog? Eh. Werdum vs. Big Nog? An improvement.

8) Gabriel Gonzaga (8-3)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 252

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Loss via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

- vs. Randy Couture - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - Win via KO (head kick) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Carmelo Marrero - Win via submission (arm bar) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz II - December 30, 2006

- vs. Fabiano Scherner - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie - May 27, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Justin McCully - UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin - July 5, 2008

Comments: Gonzaga has a fight coming up at UFC 86 against Justin McCully. To me, this could be a "win or go home" fight for Gonzaga. At one point last year Gonzaga was looked at as the next big thing in the UFC's heavyweight division, however after suffering two straight losses to top competition can Gonzaga really cut it in the UFC? He should have no problem with McCully at UFC 86, but I have seen stranger things happen.

9) Ben Rothwell (29-5)

Height: 6'5

Weight: 265

Currently fighting with: Adrenaline MMA, Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ricco Rodriguez - Win via decision (unanimous) - IFL - 2007 Team Championship Final - September 20, 2007

- vs. Krzysztof Soszynski - Win via TKO (strikes) - IFL - 2007 Semifinals - August 2, 2007

- vs. Travis Fulton - Win via submission (kimura) - IFL - Chicago - May 19, 2007

- vs. Roy Nelson - Win via decision (split) - IFL - Moline - April 7, 2007

- vs. Matt Thompson - Win via TKO (punches) - IFL - Houston - February 2, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Andrei Arlvoski - Affliction "Banned" - July 19, 2008

Comments: The big knock on Ben Rothwell is the fact that he hasn't beaten any "top competition". Coming up on July 19th he will be facing some tough competition in the form of former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlvoski. Rothwell is on a 13 fight win streak and hasn't lost since 2005. If Rothwell can somehow walk through Arlvoski will he become the next challenger to Fedor if Fedor gets through Sylvia? Is it just me or can July 19th not get here soon enough?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

10) Mirko Cro Cop (23-6-2)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 220

Currently fighting with: DREAM

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tatsuya Mizuno - Win via TKO (punches) - DREAM: Heiwa Dream 1 - March 15, 2008

- vs. Cheick Kongo - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion - September 8, 2007

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Loss via KO (head kick) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Eddie Sanchez - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 67: All or Nothing - February 3, 2007

- vs. Josh Barnett - Win via submission (strikes) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Jerome LeBanner - DREAM 5 - July 20, 2008

Comments: Mirko pulled out of his grappling match with Ralek Gracie at DREAM 4 so he could focus on his upcoming fight with Jerome LeBanner at DREAM 5. If this fight does finally go down, it will own. I need to find someway I can convince Comcast in Oregon to get HDNet so I can watch DREAM!

On The Bubble: (On the bubble includes fighter's who aren't ranked yet still remain a threat in their division)

Cheick Kongo (11-4-1)

So I was browsing DVD release dates on Amazon.com and I came across the Scorpion King 2, guess who is starring in this, none other then Randy Couture... Gess we know what he has been doing inthe last year, cause it certainly was not fighting...

Posted By: Kent Adams (Guest)  on June 26, 2008 at 04:14 AM

The picture of Ben Rothwell is Roy Nelson not Rothwell.

Posted By: Todd (Guest)  on June 26, 2008 at 08:14 AM

WTF - You're clearly the retard. First of all, Dustin clearly explains the rankings are established by a collective of votes. They are not just his personal rankings. Secondly, overall record is one thing, but you have to also take into account the caliber of win/loss. Look at who Cro Cop has beaten and who Kongo has beaten. That would explain why Mirko is over Cheick. And no shit K-1 doesn't count. Do us all a favor and keep your mental disability to yourself and out of the 411 comments section.

dustin - it is time to post all of the other writer's rankings...i need to know who is still ranking gonzaga, crocop and kingo! there is no reason on the planet for them to be ranked and if the final product shows kongo on the bubble then writers are ranking them...it's all silly, and they need to earn their way back...other than that i would have had sylvia over arlovski..but what the hell...beyond the big three of over rated this isn't all that bad.

Posted By: romano (Guest)  on June 26, 2008 at 10:46 AM

you guys seem to be huge gonzaga fans, but I can't justify putting him on my top ten list. Definitely an on the bubble guy. I'd go with your picks in the top five though.

@Kent Adams

Thanx Captain Obvious
without you great wealth of MMA insider info we never would have known that !

Also you sarcasm dig never made no sense -much like your comment ! Couture was still with the UFC when he left for South Africa to start filming !!

This is very old news and was told by Randy way back before he left UFC after Sept for the shoot date OCT 2007 !!

He hasn't fought since Aug -it sure as hell wasn't anything to do with the filming !

Before you shoot your mouth off get your facts straight ! Randy and the UFC are battling still Court

over his contract !

Yes this is one time this deserves an

Epic FAIL !

Don't quit you day job pal !

@highone

Go hang yourself mess !

It's obvious the so called 411 votes aren't jack shit !

And so clouded it's a sin !!

Considering this so called world MMA top heavyweights don't included anyone from IFL or Elite XC etc !

And news flash ! Fighters stats are how they are picked not favoritism !

For Nog:
- vs. Josh Barnett - Loss via decision (split) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

For Barnett:
- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - Loss via submission (strikes) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

So, Nog lost to Barnett the same night that Barnett lost to Cro-Cop? How did that happen?

Posted By: Anon (Guest)  on June 26, 2008 at 04:41 PM

ROW, guess i forgot or missed Randy doing the movie when it wa announced. Of course he is still fighting with the UFC over his contract, so let me thank you for the great insider information, cause nobody knew that.

@WTF

"Considering this so called world MMA top heavyweights don't included
anyone from IFL or Elite XC etc !"

Antonio Silva is on the bubble and Roy Nelson hasn't faced anywhere near the caliber to ranked top 10. Stop looking at promotions and look at the competition one has faced.

anon, that was an open weight tournament that cro cop won. its the one where he kod wandy, and he faced barnett in the finals.

@ Anon (Guest)

Just for asking the question i know your not a MMA follower nothing more than a mere ban wagoner !!

Pride held tourneys !

And Open weight Tourneys called Pride Grand Prix !

UFC used to do it back when they first formed -last man standing sort of deal gets the money/title or potential title shot !

Expect Pride actually had a Grand Prix Belt for the winner!!

Posted By: WTF (Guest)  on June 26, 2008 at 10:03 PM

"Just for asking the question i know your not a MMA follower nothing
more than a mere ban wagoner !!"

Good one. And you can't spell. Does that make us even?

If the article listed Barnett's last 6 fights, the next one would be his decisions victory over Nog? I would think Grand Prix/tourney fights would be relevant information when including recent competition. You know, like this:

- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - Loss via submission (strikes) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006 (GRAND PRIX, 2nd fight of the night)

Then again, I'm just a 'ban wagoner', so what do I know?

Everyone.

Take.

A.

Breath.

This is just a collection of ranking by the 411 writers. In the grand scheme of things, I guess it could be considered absolutely inconsequential. If a reader is actually getting upset by these rankings, I would suggest that person needs to close their web browser, turn off their computer, and sit in a dark room so that nothing else trivial ruins their day.

I thought that rankings were perfect and obviously composed by TRUE professionals and MMA fans.

Only a while before Fedor finally gets back in the ring/cage for real. It's been, what, nearly two years since the guy last fought anyone credible in his own weight class. While I don't give Sylvia snowball's chance in hell, at least the match should give the reputation of the Last Emperor some fresh momentum.

And, if the unthinkable happens - well, I for one would expect Fedor's ranking to drop quite a bit.

Posted By: woody (Guest)  on June 27, 2008 at 06:59 PM

How much input did Needle*ick have in this?

I Like Fedor, but he hasn't fought anyone good in the last year. By the same token, Werdum's wins should put him higher up the rankings.

BigFoot should be in there. He fights well and does what he should do in almost every fight. Unlike Sylvia, who looks like crap every time out there.

This basically shows heavyweights MMA is weak. 205 is the real class to watch.

Nogueira should be number 1 by accomplishments. Beat Sylvia and Herring and is champ of the most respected league.

And Josh Barnett looks like a porn star. Don't know how that should affect his rankings.

What, no Kimbo Slice!? What a fucking joke that waste of space is. The British mutated left ear almost beat him at the last EliteXC show. After the staged fight he had to be taken too the hospital because he was having a heart attack. Kimbo, all HYPE and NO Talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
