411's MMA Rankings 7.31.08: Heavyweight Rankings
Posted by Dustin James on 07.31.2008

July 19th has come and gone. It was suppose to be the day that forever changed the heavyweight rankings in the wonderful world of Mixed-Martial-Arts. Did it? Well, not really. What it did do was prove to the doubters just how dominant Fedor Emelianenko is, how overrated and one-dimensional Tim Sylvia is, why Ben Rothwell is not quite a top 10 heavyweight fighter, and that Josh Barnett is still a dangerous son of a bitch. Well, the MMA experts here at 411mania.com have gotten together to sort out the aftermath of July 19th and we now present to you, the top 10 heavyweight fighters in MMA!

BUT FIRST.........

MMA Investigative Reporting

Due to how shitty the housing market currently is, I have decided to take some time off from my usual job. With my time off I have become somewhat addicted to TMZ. This has made me take a long hard look at my current job and you know what, I decided I hate it. Therefore it's with great pleasure that I'm going to announce that as of right now....I'm an unofficial MMA investigative reporter! Here are a few scoops that I have come across with my time off:

Cro Cop To Quit MMA, Start Racing Career

My first assignment was to find out what the hell Mirko Cro Cop is REALLY up to. We all know he keeps canceling his MMA fights because of "injury". However, I have found out the TRUTH! It seems that Cro Cop has become a huge fan of quad racing. Not only that, but he has actually been doing some racing with his spare time. You think I'm lying?!? How dare you. Well, you know what they say......a picture is worth a thousand words:

Needless to say Cro Cop finished dead last in the race. That picture you see above isn't Cro Cop in first place, he's actually about to be lapped by the competition. Poor guy just can't catch a break.

Tim Sylvia Steals Fedor's WAMMA Heavyweight Title

We all saw Mr. Tim Sylvia get destroyed by Fedor Emelianenko back at Affliction "Banned". However, what you don't know is this. The very next day Sylvia got the last laugh! I was walking over to Fedor's hotel room to discuss how amazingly cool we both are when I captured this little gem:

Fedor actually ended up catching up to Sylvia when I reminded Tim that if he "steps on a crack he can break his mother's back". When Fedor caught up to Sylvia he stole his belt back and then peed in Tim's water bottle.

Anderson Silva Just Won't Leave Rich Franklin Alone

A few days later I got an anonymous call from somebody with a Brazilian accent who told me I should follow Rich Franklin around while he does his daily jogging routine. Since I'm a gullible son of a bitch I headed to Ohio and followed Franklin around. I have to admit that I was shocked with what I saw go down.......

For some reason Anderson Silva just won't leave poor Rich Franklin alone. And to add insult to injury, that bastard jogger in the background stole Franklin's wallet. And yes for your information, when Franklin jogs he wears his MMA ring attire.

Tito Ortiz To Replace Cuba Gooding Jr In Remake Of Popular Film

Yes, now that Tito has a lot more time on his hands it seems that he is going to take a crack at Hollywood much like Randy Couture has. However, Tito's first big feature film will actually be a remake of a very popular movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. I know, I know, you are thinking the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" would be great for the role of "Tre" in Boyz N' The Hood. Well, you are wrong! Oh, what's that? You think Tito would be perfect for the role of the "Show me the money" guy on Jerry Maguire due to Tito's financial situation with the UFC? Well, you are wrong again. Actually, Mr. Ortiz is set to star in......

Look for the review coming soon......

As of right now, my days of investigative reporting are over........

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we could probably beat up 1/4 of the Golden Girls.

411's Official MMA Rankings

Heavyweight Division

1) Fedor Emelianenko (28-1)

Height: 6'0

Weight: 233

Currently fighting with: Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008

- vs. Hong Man Choi - Win via submission (arm bar) - Yarennoka - New Year's Eve 2007 - December 31, 2007

- vs. Matt Lindland - Win via submission (arm bar) - BodogFight: Clash of the Nations - April 14, 2007

- vs. Mark Hunt - Win via submission (kimura) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Mark Coleman - Win via submission (arm bar) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Affliction 2 - October 11, 2008

Comments: Wow, just wow. On July 19th Fedor Emelianenko made ALOT of people look like fools. Not only did he make Dana White look like a fool (remember when Dana said Fedor wasn't even a top 10 heavyweight?? LOL!), he made Tim Sylvia look like a 5'4 bitch, & he made all of YOU doubters hang your head in shame. It's pretty obvious now that Fedor is not a joke. Seriously, who is going to stop this guy? If you say Randy Couture, then you my friend would be wrong. Randy is an incredible fighter, but Fedor is just too unstoppable for Couture. Couture has proven to the world that he has a suspect chin and Fedor would expose that. That is not a fight that I want to see anymore considering I'm a huge Couture fan. Instead it's looking like Fedor himself has moved on from that fight and will now face Andrei Arlovski at Affliction 2 on October 11. All I can say is, poor Arlovski. Once Fedor walks through Arlovski, he will most likely face Mirko Cro Cop at DREAM's New Year's Eve show...then face Josh Barnett possibly at Affliction's 3rd show in March of 2009. Fedor's schedule is getting full fast, so if Couture REALLY wants to get his ass kicked bad then he had better up and solve his legal issues with the UFC.

2) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria (31-4-1)

Height: 6'3

Weight: 231

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Heath Herring - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7th, 2007

- vs. Josh Barnett - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Josh Barnett - Loss via decision (split) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Frank Mir - UFC's New Year's Eve Show - December 27, 2008

Comments: Big Nog just finished wrapping up the next season of the Ultimate Fighter where he and Frank Mir are opposing coaches. The season will premiere in September and wrap up around December, right in time for Big Nog to defend his UFC heavyweight title against Mir. I have a question.....does ANYBODY care about the UFC's heavyweight division? Seriously. When Frank Mir is your #1 contender then you need to fix said division fast. I'm betting Dana White is kicking himself in the ass for not ponying up the money for Fedor. GREAT MOVE DANA.

3) Josh Barnett (26-5)

Height: 6'3

Weight: 250

Currently fighting with: World Victory Road, Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Pedro Rizzo - Win via KO (punch) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008

- vs. Jeff Monson - Win via decision (unanimous) - World Victory Road: Sengoku 2 - May 18, 2008

- vs. Hidehiko Yoshida - Win via submission (heel hook) - World Victory Road: Sengoku - March 5, 2008

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Pawel Nastula - Win via submission (toe hold) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Currently unknown

Comments: After taking more than a year off, Josh Barnett has been one of the most active fighters of 2008. Not only that, but he has managed to secure 3 victories this year with the latest one coming over Pedro Rizzo at Affliction "Banned". What's next for Barnett? I'm guessing he will fight at Affliction 2 on October 11 most likely against somebody like Tim Sylvia, Ben Rothwell, or even Aleksander Emelianenko. Either way, you can look forward to the Fedor vs. Barnett fight that has never happened to go down as early as March of next year. Are you excited? Of course you are.

4) Andrei Arlovski (13-5)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 240

Currently fighting with: Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Ben Rothwell - Win via KO (punches) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008

- vs. Jake O'Brien - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 82: Pride of a Champion - March 1, 2008

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Marcio Cruz - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz II - December 30, 2006

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 61: Bitter Rivals - July 8, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Affliction 2 - October 11, 2008

Comments: Talk about a man on a nice winning streak. Since dropping two straight to Tim Sylvia, Arlovski has been on a 4 fight win streak with wins over Werdum, Jake O'Brien, & now Ben Rothwell. What's next for "The Pitbull"? Fedor F'N Emelianenko! Talk about a bad draw. If for some reason Arlovski can pull off a miracle win over Fedor not only will MMA fans around the World be shocked, but it would cause a major disturbance in these here rankings. Can he do it? Can he pull off the "miracle in the ring"? We are still 3 months away from finding that out.....

5) Randy Couture (16-8)

Height: 6'1

Weight: 225

Currently fighting with: UFC (still signed with company)

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 68: Uprising - March 3, 2007

- vs. Chuck Liddell - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC 57: Liddell vs. Couture 3 - February 4, 2006

- vs. Mike Van Arsdale - Win via submission (anaconda choke) - UFC 54: Boiling Point - August 20, 2005

- vs. Chuck Liddell - Loss via KO (punches) - UFC 52: Couture vs. Liddell 2 - April 16, 2005

Next scheduled appearance:

- Wouldn't we all love to know?

Comments: So....what's up Randy? As you are sitting by idle and waiting for the UFC legal situation to work itself out, the only man you have any interest in fighting (Fedor) is filling up his schedule. One thing is for sure, if Randy's legal situation doesn't get worked out by the next time we do these rankings, Couture will be ineligible for a ranking. And that, my friends....makes my heart cry. If I had my way, Couture would come back to the UFC and face Big Nog in a UFC heavyweight title unification bout because as a huge Couture fan.....I have no interest in seeing him get destroyed by Fedor.

6) Fabricio Werdum (11-3-1)

Height: 6'4

Weight: 242

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 wins:

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Aleksander Emelianenko - Win via submission (choke) - 2H2H - Pride & Honor - November 12, 2006

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Junior "Cigano" dos Santos - UFC 90 - October 25, 2008 *Rumored*

Comments: Werdum recently signed a new five-fight deal with the UFC that says if he is victorious in his next fight (rumored to be against dos Santos at UFC 90) he will earn a title shot at the UFC heavyweight title. Silly me, I thought Werdum already earned a title shot with his win over Vera. Oh, that's right. The UFC's heavyweight division is ass backwards.

7) Tim Sylvia (26-6)

Height: 6'8

Weight: 260

Currently fighting with: Adrenaline MMA, Affliction

Last 5 wins:

- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Loss via submission (rear naked choke) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 77: Hostile Territory - October 20, 2007

- vs. Randy Couture - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 68: Uprising - March 3, 2007

- vs. Jeff Monson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 65: Bad Intentions - November 18, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Currently unknown

Comments: Talk about a man who needs to schedule a few easy fights to get some wins under his belt. Sylvia has now lost two in a row....although they JUST happen to be against the #1 and #2 heavyweight fighters in the world. In my opinion Sylvia has peaked as an MMA fighter. He is a man who uses his size to his advantage and that's all he has. What's next for Sylvia? I'm sure he will fight some cheese ball for Adrenaline MMA to get a win, or perhaps he might shock a few people and schedule a fight for Affliction 2 against somebody like Ben Rothwell (who he has already beaten). Either way, it's not a good time to be Tim Sylvia. May I recommend working on your ground game buddy?

8) Gabriel Gonzaga (9-3)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 252

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Justin McCully - Win via submission (kimura) - UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin - July 5, 2008

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Loss via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

- vs. Randy Couture - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - Win via KO (head kick) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Carmelo Marrero - Win via submission (arm bar) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz II - December 30, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Currently unknown

Comments: Gonzaga impressed very few people with a win over Justin McCully at UFC 86 this month. Why was it not impressive? Because it's a fight he should have won. He was able to finish McCully off fairly quickly which was kind of impressive, but now he needs to make YOU doubters remember why he was once the #1 contender to the UFC heavyweight title. Whenever you want to talk shit about Gabriel Gonzaga, just go back and watch his fight with Mirko Cro Cop. You can see just how scary Gonzaga can be. Yikes.

9) Frank Mir (11-3)

Height: 6'1

Weight: 240

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Brock Lesnar - Win via submission (knee bar) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Antoni Hardonk - Win via submission (kimura) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

- vs. Brandon Vera - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 65: Bad Intentions - November 18, 2006

- vs. Dan Christison - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 61: Bitter Rivals - July 8, 2006

- vs. Marcio Cruz - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 57: Liddell vs. Couture 3 - February 4, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - UFC New Year's Eve Show - December 27, 2008

Comments: You want to know how screwy the UFC's heavyweight division is? Frank Mir is our #9 heavyweight, yet he's the #1 contender to the UFC heavyweight title. Dammmmnnnnnn. Dana White REALLY needs to evaluate his heavyweight division because as of right now, Affliction is bitch slapping him and then laughing all the way to the bank. Either way, look for another lackluster season of The Ultimate Fighter. Is it just me or does that show become worse with each season? I'm not talking about the actual fighters competing on the show......I'm talking about the show in general. It's my humble opinion that the UFC should put this baby to rest. Either that or change up the concept a little. I'm a huge fan of the idea of the UFC bringing in UN-TRAINED MMA fighters to compete on the show much like the WWE did with Tough Enough. That could have some potential there. Oh, and for the record...I had Mir nowhere near my personal top 10. I believe Antonio Silva should be up here somewhere.

10) Mirko Cro Cop (23-6-2)

Height: 6'2

Weight: 220

Currently fighting with: DREAM

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tatsuya Mizuno - Win via TKO (punches) - DREAM: Heiwa Dream 1 - March 15, 2008

- vs. Cheick Kongo - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion - September 8, 2007

- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Loss via KO (head kick) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Eddie Sanchez - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 67: All or Nothing - February 3, 2007

- vs. Josh Barnett - Win via submission (strikes) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Alistair Overeem - Sometime in 2008

Comments: It seems that 2008 has been the year of Cro Cop cancellation! How many fights has Cro Cop scheduled this year only to have them canceled due to either injury or something else? Cro Cop recently posted a blog stating that his injuries are healing and he should be healthy enough to face Alistair Overeem in the very near future. I can see them fighting at a DREAM event in the next few months leading up to the possible Cro Cop/Fedor DREAM fight on New Year's Eve. Of course, that all depends on Cro Cop's health.

On The Bubble: (On the bubble includes fighter's who aren't ranked yet still remain a threat in their division)

Ben Rothwell (33-6)

Height: 6'5

Weight: 265

Currently fighting with: Adrenaline MMA, Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Loss via KO (punches) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008

- vs. Ricco Rodriguez - Win via decision (unanimous) - IFL - 2007 Team Championship Final - September 20, 2007

- vs. Krzysztof Soszynski - Win via TKO (strikes) - IFL - 2007 Semifinals - August 2, 2007

you guys are a mess @

Heath Herring is next in line for a title shot ! And How the hell is Coutre #5 he still is the UFC HW Champ !!

Nog is still only the intrem Champ as UFC announces it still !

To have Andrei over Couture is a fucking insult !! I think places eithe need to be switched between Andre and Couture or have couture !!!

Tim Syliva has beat Andrei 2 times in less than 2 yrs ago to have him 7 is an insult as well !!!

You know the Heavyweight Division is fucked up when guys like Werdum, Mir and Gonzaga are on the list. Sad state of affiars for this division, oh well

Posted By: Brad (Guest)  on July 31, 2008 at 01:10 AM

@Brad

Do you mean when big, fast guys with crazy good jui jitsu are top10 heavyweights?

Is the problem that they are not elite HWs or that you personally don't care for them?

Posted By: Matt (Guest)  on July 31, 2008 at 02:05 AM

I think Brad was talking about the blatant difference in talent between the top 5 and the rest....at least, depending on how Big Tim takes his recent humbling and if CroCop ever actually gets back into the way he was 2 years ago.

Take a look at most any other division and the difference between the guys on top and the guys toward the bottom isn't nearly as severe.

It's rare but I strongly agree with this list .

The top 5 are heads and shoulders ahead of anyone else .

Why is Josh F'N Barnett WITHOUT any single proper opponent for Next Affliction Event ?

Offer us Couture vs Barnett with the winner taking on Fedor !

As Much as Arlovski has looked out terrific in his last two fights against two good opponents he will need a lot of luck to go the five rounds distance with Fedor !

Though I was impressed with the massive POP he got at Affliction during the Barnett/Rizzo fight when shown backstage .

The guy is clearly "over" and charismatic and will sell the show on promos and vids since Fedor is as exciting as a tooth pick outside of the ring .

"Affliction is bitch slapping him and then laughing all the way to the bank"

What do they do when they get there? Take out more money since they lost so much on the event?

1 - fedor - no explanation necessary
2 - big nog - in a world without fedor, he would be the greatest...here in the real world, he'll have to settle for second best
3 - Arlovski - I give him the edge over barnett due to his more impressive victory at affliction and his more active schedule over the last few years
4 - Barnett - brash, talented and young...proving that catch wrestling is for real with every victory...how impressive is his record if it weren't for Cro Cop?
5 - Randy Couture - this is a token ranking due to his status as champ...the man's lost a third of his fights, has been knocked out at 205 and is vastly over rated and very inactive and he's 45
6 - Tim Sylvia - can anyone blame him for the losses that he's taken? I don't recall Tommy Hearns or Roberto Duran getting called out for taking on and losing to the best that their eras had to offer. i hope that his next opponent is more manageable.
7 - Fabricio Werdum - he's a helluva fighter and i look forward to him getting his shot
8-10 --- all bs....honestly, how could anyone have cro cop, gonzaga or kongo ranked? i'll always be a fan of frank mir, and i think that his comeback was mired with losses due to his coming back too early...but he beat a greenhorn, that doesn't get you back on the list in my book.

He hasn't defended the title or fought in close to a year and in his previous 5 fights he is 3-2. His overall record is 16-8, guys below him have better overall records. So I don't even think he deserves #5. Randy is great, and if he had won a couple matches in the past year he could be higher, but he made his choice to fight about his contract. In theory he could have had his 2 (I think) remaining fights and be done already and ready to fight Fedor.

guys have to remember the quality of competition that Couture has victories over; that's what keeps him in the top ten. I do think this list could be cut to a top 5 and no one would argue though. Hopefully this time next year we will start to see whether guys like Carwin and Velazquez can stand up to top tier competition and hopefully we'll see a renaissance of the heavy weight div.
