MMA Spotlight 8.28.08: Georges St. Pierre Doesn’t Have to Fight B.J. Penn
Posted by Reuel Mante on 08.28.2008
We have been informed left and right that B.J. will fight GSP in December or later ever since Penn defended the lightweight championship against Sean Sherk. Does that really need to happen? I don’t think so.
Since B.J. Penn called out GSP in May, internet posts have been firing off left and right about two particular opinions. One opinion is that this fight would be a huge superfight for the UFC: Two champions in different weight classes going at it to decide who the pound-for-pound best fighter in the UFC. The other opinion is that to have this fight go down freezes up both men's weight classes until several months later when both men are healthy to defend their titles. For about four months now, I've read over and over about how every reader and writer on this website feels one way or another. I think it's about time I cash in my thoughts.
To start off, I don't care either way. On one hand, the first fight did end in controversy. GSP winning a split decision in a fight that saw Penn looking untouched at the end of fifteen minutes while St. Pierre was a complete mess didn't look right to some. B.J. has vehemently denied losing and maintains that he was robbed. A rematch would definitely decide who the better man is.
On the other hand, neither Penn nor St. Pierre has cleaned out their respective divisions the way Anderson Silva has in the middleweight division. There are plenty of viable contenders to both belts that are just waiting for their day in the sun. Today, I will focus on GSP's top contenders for the welterweight title.
1. Jon Fitch- I know he just lost his title shot two and a half weeks ago but keep in mind, "Rush" could not finish him on many occasions during the twenty-five minute limit. Fitch took the best that the champ could dish out and still hung on. With the loss, Jon joined an exclusive club. He is now the sixth man to go to a decision with GSP and the first man to last twenty-five minutes. To put more numbers in the equation, Georges finishes 70% of all of his wins. That's a pretty impressive number considering Chuck Liddell has a 71% finish rate and Anderson Silva has a 77% finish rate. To satisfy your curiosity, Wanderlei Silva sports an 81% finish rate. With these numbers, St. Pierre shows how dominant he can be and Fitch hung on strong. Give him a few more wins and a little training to work on his strikes and I guarantee the next time these two fight, GSP might lose.
2. Diego Sanchez- the Ultimate Fighter season one winner was on the cusp of a welterweight title shot two years ago until he met up with Josh Koscheck. Staph infection and training gym transfers aside, he lost that fight. He would then lose again to another AKA fighter in Jon Fitch. Now sporting a two fight win streak and taking on de facto number one contender Thiago Alves at UFC 90, Sanchez is on the upswing. If he were to face GSP, there's only one thing I can see causing the champ any problems is Diego's jiu-jitsu. It's fast and explosive and the pace that Sanchez keeps can wear out anyone. Look for "Nightmare" to have a title shot in the near future.
3. Thiago Alves- as previously mentioned, he's the de facto number one contender now that Jon Fitch has been defeated. Since losing to Fitch in 2006, he has been on a six-fight win streak including victories over Chris Lytle, Karo Parisyan, and Matt Hughes. His Muay Thai has been top notch as he has (T)KO'd ten out of his fifteen wins. The Pitbull is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. On this list, Thiago poses the biggest threat to GSP. With a victory over Sanchez in October, you can bet that the next title defense for St. Pierre in 2009 will be Alves.
4. Akihiro Gono- DJ GOZMA may be the dark horse of the entire welterweight division. This Japanese "Magic Man" is extremely skillful with submissions and is exceptionally quick. Giving up only two inches to GSP will lend itself to his elusive fighting style. I consider Gono to be like a snake. He waits for the right time to strike and when he does, it's usually with quick, painful accuracy. His counter striking could be useful if caught in a striking game with the champ. Sure, he doesn't have the best record but he debuted in the UFC with flying colors. A second round armbar submission on Tamdan McCrory and he was in the books. Not long after that, people started clamoring for a Fitch/Gono fight to decide the number one contender spot. Unfortunately, that didn't happen but watch out for this guy. He's not that far out of sight when deciding a new championship contender.
5. Marcus Davis- I don't care if he just lost to Mike Swick. This guy can fight. A former boxer with dynamite in both hands, he has become a true student of the game. The Irish Hand Grenade has developed a ground game that is still underrated. Prior to his loss to Swick, Davis was sporting an eleven-fight win streak that not many in the welterweight division can claim. This well-rounded fighter would cause problems for GSP on the feet and the ground.
So that's it. Five guys who are, in my opinion, ready for a title shot. All of these fights carry some kind of intrigue as to how would Georges St. Pierre overcome the obstacles leading to a victory. Are they money fights like with B.J. Penn? Maybe not. But shouldn't we still get to see the best welterweights go at it? Wouldn't any of these fighters become more than what they already are? That's up to the UFC to make them big time contenders.
The closer it gets to the winter, the more and more it looks like Penn/St. Pierre 2 will happen in December or January. For any five of these guys to get their shot at glory, we'll just have to wait until next year.
I totally agree - lately these little matches seem to be about B Penn and what benefits Bj Penn ! As much as a talent Penn is and i have respect and even like his style and as person he hasn't fought in the middle weight division in 2 yrs and lost both times and that's after entering the UFC again for the 2nd time coming off a loss in open weight to Lyoto Machida!
Sure he's done great in lightweight but his match with jens pulver far as i'm concerned even though he won is not yet avenged as it's a 1-1 series and he went down the wire with Sean Sherk before tko'n him.
i think this free ride thing the UFC does at the expanse of certian fighters that have been through the wire and at the top of their careers as champ to bow down to benefit other less deserved fighters is bogus and hurts the sport and the divisions deserved contenders and Champ of said division he is representing !
Me thinks Bj Penn should not get a easy push to MWD for GSP's title when he's unproven against others deserved in that division ! also considering his last loss was to Matt Hughes right after Georges St. Pierre back in 2006 before the division became even more stacked with talent !

Koscheck > Alves, then all is fine.
BJ doesnt have any right to challenge GSP, he still has plenty of lightweight fights.
Dana just goes around going after the money fights, and thats fine... but come on, common sense says unless GSP or BJ have no suitable challengers left then a fight between them would make sense.

There, dude it's the welterweight divison, not middleweight, so get that right first before commenting...as far as the match goes, what if it was a non-title, would that satisfy everyone to the point that titles wont be in trouble whether one man loses or not

Wow...yet another article whining about the upcoming GSP/BJ fight. Its a mega fight, most sane people want to see it, its more compelling than anything else out there, so hell...lets not do it! They should have to fight guys like Ken Florian and Diego Sanchez first just because. If the UFC has learned anything over the last two years, its this....when there is a megafight to be made, you damn well better make it. No sense in putting ridiculous stipulations to the fight..."fighter A has to beat B and C and fighter D loses to E then we'll do the megafight". And I'm sure most of the people complaining about the fight will still be glued to the TV once it comes on.

After a couple month layaway after the Sanchez/Alves fight it's going to be 2009 anyways, so they'll only have to wait a couple more months. Big deal. Alves couldn't make weight, Sanchez has lost 2 of his last 4... do they really deserve the shot so badly they can't wait a couple more months?
By the time Fitch racks up those wins to even be considered worthy of another shot GSP/Penn will be long since completed. He's certainly not worthy of a title shot right away. Whether or not he was finished doesn't matter... he was completely dominated in every aspect of that fight with the exception of about 2 minutes.
Just quit fucking bitching and enjoy the fact that you're getting a super fight between 2 fighters in the prime of their career. Christ, it's getting annoying.

I want to see the fight, but I feel that both men need to defend their titles once more before this happens and when it does happen, it should be a catch weight fight for no title. If one or the other wants to challenge for either title, they need to clean out their respective division first.
Now these next comments will definately create fireworks, lol. But I feel that they need to be pointed out.
First off, I think the Penn/Sherk fight shouldnt have happened. Sherk needed a fight before fighting for the belt to tune up for his championship match. I think the outcome might have been different if he had a tune up as he had not fought in 10 months before fighting Penn.
Same goes for GSP & Serra. I think that Serra should have fought once before fighting GSP, especially after the serious nature of his injury. I think Serra was out of shape and not ready for GSP. I still believe that Serra can beat GSP, but not after that big of a layoff and that kind of injury. GSP is one of the best and to beat him, u cant lay off for that long without a tune up fight first.
Look at anybody who has laid off for that period of time and fought a top fighter. THey normally lose. ANyway, let the rants begin......

A4P has the idea. GSP doesn't have a clear cut contender right now, so why not let this super fight go down while the WW div sorts itself out. Florian could certainly be argued to be the LW #1 contender, but hey what can ya do

Regarding a Jon Fitch GPS rematch. You state, "I guarantee...GSP might lose." what kind of gauruntee is that. Oh yeah, I gauruntee GSP might win.

Anyone who thinks that Serra could beat GSP is surely doing some sort of crack cocaine.
Did you not watch the fights? The first time he won...oK he won....but lets just look at what happened: GSP slipped...good job Serra you took advantage of it and won.
The second time: GSP won. There was NO doubt who the better fighter was. Serra is supposed to be this massive BBJ guy....I didnt see anything all that impressive...oh wait....I didnt see anything at all.
Guest#6036 have a wonderful time doing your crack.

While I agree that both should defends their titles first, if they face all the people that deserve shots in their division then GSP vs Penn won't happen for at least another year. By then who knows if they will be Champion anymore(Champion vs Champion is a really big draw) and who knows if they will still be in their prime then? I'm sure they both will because they are such great athletes, but you never know.
UFC is taking advantage of this situation while it's there. If they wait any longer they might loose out on this big money fight. While the divisons are frozen, maybe the top contenders can fight each other and determine a real ranking, instead of everyone being really even. While you might think Alves is the #1 contender, I could think Sanchez is, and someone else could think Fitch is. Let the top contenders fight it out over the next few months and truely determine who is the #1 contender.
