411's MMA Rankings 9.11.08: Heavyweight Rankings
Posted by Dustin James on 09.11.2008
It's my one-year anniversary here at 411mania and we are celebrating by ranking the best heavyweight fighters in MMA! I also rank my personal top-ten favorite fighters, discuss the passing of Evan Tanner, as well as try to help motivate you people. All this inside a special HUGE edition of 411's MMA Rankings.......
Welcome back to this special edition of 411's MMA Rankings! It's a good thing you decided to read this as it's a special expanded edition due to the fact that it's my 1-year anniversary here at 411mania.com! It's hard to believe that I have been ranking MMA fighters for 411 for a year now. 411mania's MMA zone continues to grow every month. It seems that every month we are gaining more and more readers as MMA itself grows. It's a good time to be an MMA writer! This time around we are going to be ranking the heavyweight fighters. With the recent news that Randy Couture is returning to the UFC to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 91, where do these two fighters fall in the rankings? Does Brock Lesnar even make his first appearance in the Top 10? What about Fedor? Can he maintain his top spot in the rankings? Those questions will get answered (I promise) in this HUGE edition of 411's Official MMA Rankings!
But first........
My thoughts on the death of Evan Tanner
Wow. That's really all I can say when I found out about this late Monday night. I'm not going to lie and say I was absolutely shocked by his death because it seemed like the guy loved taking risks. Whether it be camping in the desert in 110 degree weather, or with the bottle itself. When I read his blog last month where he mentioned this camping trip I thought the guy was crazy. Who goes camping in 110 degree weather in the desert?!!? That's something Bear Grylls would do, but if it came down to it and Grylls was dying of dehydration the guy knows how to survive. I don't know what Evan Tanner was trying to prove by pulling this stunt. Some people have mentioned that it sounds like passive-aggressive suicide. Anyway you want to look at it, the man knew he was taking a risk with his life, and in the end...he lost.
Tanner actually lived in my home state of Oregon. About 45 minutes from me in a town called "Troutdale". The man was a great fighter and I personally loved watching him fight. He was one of the first fighters I watched when I returned to the World of MMA due to his connection with Team Quest. I will personally miss Evan Tanner. The guy was a great fighter and one that was always enjoyable to watch in the Octagon.
R.I.P. Evan Tanner
Moving on.......
My Personal Top 10 Favorite MMA Fighters
1) Randy Couture
Randy Couture is probably the biggest reason I became an MMA fan. While I rented UFC I, II, III, etc when they were released on VHS back in the day, I stopped watching the sport all together in 1996 or so. It was around the year 2004 that Randy Couture brought my interest back into the sport. Coming from Oregon and being an amateur wrestling nut, all I would hear about is the "Team Quest" gym in Gresham, Oregon. I read up on the gym and if not for me being a lazy ass, I would have joined the gym. I loved what they offered and I loved the fact that Randy Couture was not only one of the head trainers, but was a UFC bad ass as well. This prompted me to return to the wonderful world of MMA, and I haven't looked back since. Couture is also the sole reason I was depressed after a UFC event. After Liddell/Couture 3 back in 2006 when Randy Couture announced his initial retirement, my buddies and I were distraught. This guy was one of our heroes and he just got humbled by Liddell and then called it a career! If you would like to see how we felt after that night, take a look back at the third season of "The Ultimate Fighter" and watch Ed Herman's reaction to this fight. While our feelings weren't as strong as his (he did know the guy personally) it was close. Couture will always be remembered as the guy who brought me back into MMA, which is why he remains my favorite fighter to this day.
2) Anderson Silva
I didn't understand the hype that surrounded Anderson Silva when he first joined the UFC 2 years ago. I knew he was a decent fighter, but it just shows you how ignorant most of us American fans were towards "The Spider". He has come out and crushed all his competition since then and hasn't looked back. My Oregon bias was pissed when he destroyed Chris Leben in his UFC debut, but after that.....I knew Silva was no joke. It doesn't look like anybody is going to stop Silva for awhile, and how can you NOT love that?
3) Fedor Emelianenko
Do you really need an explanation as to why Fedor is on this list? The guy is unstoppable, nice as hell, and is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. I have to admit that he moved up a few notches on this list due to the whole Rampage Jackson debacle and the fact that he destroyed Tim Sylvia (who would be on a list of my most hated fighters). Fedor is a monster, and an awesome one at that.
4) Quinton Jackson
Rampage was actually second on this list for the longest time. If it wasn't for his recent legal issues which knocked him back a few pegs, he would've came in a close second to Couture. What's NOT to love about Rampage? He is one of the best light heavyweight fighters in MMA. His charisma just oozes off the screen. He has one of the best entrances in MMA and the guy will slam you to China. I love me some Rampage and as soon as he gets his head back in the game....watch out.
5) BJ Penn
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I love me some BJ Penn. He became the first American to win the black belt division at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. How is that not an amazing feat? Not only that but he became the 2nd fighter in UFC history to capture a UFC title at 2 different weight classes (the other being #1 on this list). The main knock on BJ seems to be his cardio and that he underestimates his opponents. Well, not any more. Look for a recharged Penn to come out and remind everybody why he should be considered one of the most dangerous fighters in the game.
6) Georges St. Pierre
GSP is just plain awesome. Anybody who can dominate Matt Hughes twice, as well as take the title off of Matt Serra is A-OK in my book. GSP is only 27 years old and is 17-2 in MMA. He is already a future UFC hall-of-famer in my book and his legacy is just starting. In 10 years, he will probably still be fighting and hell......he might be 43-2 by then. Plus it doesn't help that he looks like me. I say that because I was born two months before him so I got dibs on this look.
7) Brock Lesnar
Growing up I was a HUGE WWE fan. While my love for wrestling has died down recently (the main thing in wrestling is you have to like the main eventers, right now I don't connect with any of them) I will always remember Brock Lesnar. I was there when Lesnar fell on his head during his attempted Shooting Star Press onto Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 19. I saw Lesnar's TV debut on RAW. I saw Lesnar's last WWE match ("WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME???"). I got Lesnar up to an 85 rating on Madden before I got bored with that year's version. So you can say I have a little history with the guy. Now he is in a different sport, and I'm here with him again. Lesnar has impressed me thus far in his MMA career and I truly believe that if he puts his heart into it and continues, he could become one of the most dangerous heavyweights to ever compete in MMA. It is entirely up to him.
8) Nick Diaz
This might be an unpopular pick, but guess what.....it's my list! To be a favorite fighter of mine, you have to be entertaining. Guess what? Nick Diaz is entertaining. I love the fact that he loves flipping people off, I love his bad ass attitude, and I love that he disrespects people. Sorry, but he reminds me a little of myself. I can be a mouthy asshole just like Diaz (just ask my girlfriend), which is probably why the guy remains one of my favorites. When I found out he got into a fight at the hospital with Joe Riggs, I wanted to know if he beat Riggs with a bed pan. Whenever I see Diaz on my screen, it's going to be entertaining....bottom line.
9) Shinya Aoki
What's not too love about Aoki? His shiny outfits? His masterful submission skills? The fact that he can dominate at either lightweight or welterweight? The dude has it all, which is why he's on this list. I just wish he would come to the UFC and show off his skills for the non-hardcore MMA fans.
10) Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza
As you know, it's no secret that I'm a HUGE Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fan. And when you speak BJJ, look no further than Jacare. The guy is currently 9-1 as a pro with 8 victories via submission. He is the 2004 and 2005 Openweight World Jiu-Jitsu Champion and the 2005 ADCC Absolute Division runner-up. The dude is scary good. Watch out for this guy in the near future.
And of course....an honorable mention!
GINA F'N CARANO!
I got a Yardbarker!
For those of you who don't know what Yardbarker is, it's basically a blog. Yep, that's correct. A BLOG! I signed up for one months ago but ended up just forgetting about it. However, I'm now trying to update the thing more often. I recommend checking it out if you like honest MMA opinions and such. I promise to update it frequently. You can access the GogoBLOGa by clicking here! Seriously, check it out. It's a work in progress but it will get better as time goes by.
MMA Motivational Pictures
I'm here to help motivate you people. That's my main goal with writing these here MMA rankings. To motivate and to give the non-hardcore MMA fans a little bit more knowledge about who the top MMA fighters are in the world. These are some of the MMA motivational pictures I have found across the net, they should easily help you smile and enjoy life a little more.....ENJOY!
OK, so that one had nothing to do with MMA.....it just cracked me up!
Now, for the reason you came here......
411's MMA Ranking Rules
- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.
- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we could probably beat up one of Tim Sylvia's legs!
411's Official MMA Rankings
Heavyweight Division
1) Fedor Emelianenko (28-1)
Height: 6'0
Weight: 233
Currently fighting with: Affliction
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008
- vs. Hong Man Choi - Win via submission (arm bar) - Yarennoka - New Year's Eve 2007 - December 31, 2007
- vs. Matt Lindland - Win via submission (arm bar) - BodogFight: Clash of the Nations - April 14, 2007
- vs. Mark Hunt - Win via submission (kimura) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006
- vs. Mark Coleman - Win via submission (arm bar) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Currently unknown
Comments: Tough break for Fedor. He had to pull out of his scheduled fight at Affliction 2 with Andrei Arlovski due to a hand injury. Now Fedor will sit on the sidelines and wait and see who wins the fight between Arlovski and Josh Barnett and will be Fedor's next victi....errr opponent. Fedor will most likely end up facing Mirko Cro Cop on DREAM's New Year's Eve show in December. The latest update on Fedor vs. Randy Couture doesn't look good either. The UFC REALLY needs to do some negotiating work and get this dream fight done. Fedor has a clause in his contract with Affliction that would allow him to go to the UFC and face Couture. However, it all depends on how much money the UFC is offering and whether or not the UFC would allow Fedor to come in, fight one or two fights, and then bolt the organization. While Fedor is a huge name amongst hardcore MMA fans, he is still a relative unknown to the casual fans. A UFC appearance (especially a fight against Couture) would raise Fedor's stock to unbelievable levels and the UFC doesn't want to give Fedor that exposure if he's just going to leave the organization and head back to Affliction, the UFC's #1 competition. Either way, my MMA fanboyism is BEGGING Dana White to get this fight done. Do it!
2) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria (31-4-1)
Height: 6'3
Weight: 231
Currently fighting with: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008
- vs. Heath Herring - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7th, 2007
- vs. Josh Barnett - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006
- vs. Josh Barnett - Loss via decision (split) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006
- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Frank Mir - UFC 92 - December 27, 2008
Comments: The premiere of the newest season of "The Ultimate Fighter" starring coaches Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir is right around the corner. You have to believe that the return of Randy Couture to the UFC has "Big Nog" thinking about a unification bout with Couture if he can get past Mir, and if Couture can get past Lesnar. A potential Nog/Couture fight would be awesome for the hardcore MMA fans. As far as the casual fans go, Nog is still not a huge name. However with a coaching stint on "The Ultimate Fighter" and a win over Mir in December, one would believe that Nog could end up a huge UFC star. Especially if he comes out of this latest UFC heavyweight title turmoil with the belt.
3) Randy Couture (16-8)
Height: 6'1
Weight: 225
Currently fighting with: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007
- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 68: Uprising - March 3, 2007
- vs. Chuck Liddell - Loss via KO (punch) - UFC 57: Liddell vs. Couture 3 - February 4, 2006
- vs. Mike Van Arsdale - Win via submission (anaconda choke) - UFC 54: Boiling Point - August 20, 2005
- vs. Chuck Liddell - Loss via KO (punches) - UFC 52: Couture vs. Liddell 2 - April 16, 2005
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Brock Lesnar - UFC 91 "Couture vs. Lesnar" - November 15, 2008
Comments: Heeeee'sssssss baaaaacccckkkk! Finally, after a year long dispute with the UFC, "Captain America" returns! And not only that, but he returns to face off against BROCK F'N LESNAR! This fight came as a huge shock to me. Is Lesnar actually ready to face one of the greatest of all-time? Especially for the UFC heavyweight title. You have guys like Fabricio Werdum and ummmmm, and ummmmmmm, well Werdum who definitely deserve a shot at the UFC heavyweight title. Tons of people are predicting an easy win for Brock here due to the size advantage. However, don't underestimate Couture's standing skills. If the fight remains standing Couture will cause problems for Lesnar. Don't let the punch that Lesnar landed on Herring fool you. Couture is NOT Heath Herring. Very very interesting fight. It's just too bad that it couldn't happen in Portland, Oregon.
4) Andrei Arlovski (13-5)
Height: 6'4
Weight: 240
Currently fighting with: Affliction
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Ben Rothwell - Win via KO (punches) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008
- vs. Jake O'Brien - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 82: Pride of a Champion - March 1, 2008
- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007
- vs. Marcio Cruz - Win via KO (strikes) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz II - December 30, 2006
- vs. Tim Sylvia - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 61: Bitter Rivals - July 8, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Josh Barnett - Affliction 2 "Day Of Reckoning" - 2009
Comments: Arlovski should breathe a breath of fresh air. Why? Because he no longer has to get his ass kicked by Fedor Emelianenko. Due to a hand injury Fedor was forced to pull out of Affliction's "Day Of Reckoning" and Arlvoski will now take on Barnett. This is a fight that I actually am looking forward to. A lot of people didn't like this fight when it was announced, and I don't see why. Both Barnett and Arlovski are former UFC heavyweight champion's. Not to mention the fight will be incredibly interesting. Look for Arlovski to stand and try to bang with Barnett.
This just in: I found out Affliction's "Day Of Reckoning" PPV has been postponed until next year. So ya, that sucks.
5) Josh Barnett (26-5)
Height: 6'3
Weight: 250
Currently fighting with: World Victory Road, Affliction
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Pedro Rizzo - Win via KO (punch) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008
- vs. Jeff Monson - Win via decision (unanimous) - World Victory Road: Sengoku 2 - May 18, 2008
- vs. Hidehiko Yoshida - Win via submission (heel hook) - World Victory Road: Sengoku - March 5, 2008
- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006
- vs. Pawel Nastula - Win via submission (toe hold) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Affliction "Day Of Reckoning" - 2009
Comments: See Arlovski, Andrei
6) Fabricio Werdum (11-3-1)
Height: 6'4
Weight: 242
Currently fighting with: UFC
Last 5 wins:
- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 85: Bedlam - June 7, 2008
- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008
- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007
- vs. Aleksander Emelianenko - Win via submission (choke) - 2H2H - Pride & Honor - November 12, 2006
- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Junior dos Santos - UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" - October 25, 2008
Comments: Nobody in the UFC gets more screwed due to the recent return of Randy Couture than Werdum. After re-signing with the UFC and getting a clause in his contract that guaranteed him a title shot if he's victorious over Junior dos Santos at UFC 90 next month, Werdum will now have to sit on the sidelines for around a year and wait for his title shot. Will Werdum take the Kenny Florian rout and still schedule fights if he's victorious over dos Santos at UFC 90? Or will Werdum just sit around and let the Couture/Lesnar/Mir/Nog situation work itself out, even though it's looking like that situation won't be resolved until next summer. Not to mention if Couture defeats Lesnar, then defeats the winner of Mir/Nog, and then the UFC somehow signs Fedor.....Werdum may have to wait even longer. Not a good time to be Werdum at all.
7) Gabriel Gonzaga (9-3)
Height: 6'2
Weight: 252
Currently fighting with: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Justin McCully - Win via submission (kimura) - UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin - July 5, 2008
- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Loss via TKO (punches) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008
- vs. Randy Couture - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007
- vs. Mirko Cro Cop - Win via KO (head kick) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007
- vs. Carmelo Marrero - Win via submission (arm bar) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz II - December 30, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Josh Hendricks - UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" - November 15, 2008
Comments: After defeating Justin McCully at UFC 86 in impressive fashion, Gonzaga has already scheduled another fight. He will be taking on UFC newcomer Josh Hendricks at UFC 91 in November. Hendricks is 14-4 as a pro with 4 TKO's and 9 submissions. He is also on a 9 fight win streak (minus a no contest with Chris Tuchscherer). Not a whole lot is known about Hendricks, but he hasn't lost since 2005. Something that definitely has to be cause for concern for Gonzaga.
8) Tim Sylvia (26-6)
Height: 6'8
Weight: 260
Currently fighting with: Adrenaline MMA, Affliction
Last 5 wins:
- vs. Fedor Emelianenko - Loss via submission (rear naked choke) - Affliction: Banned - July 19, 2008
- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Loss via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008
- vs. Brandon Vera - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 77: Hostile Territory - October 20, 2007
- vs. Randy Couture - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 68: Uprising - March 3, 2007
- vs. Jeff Monson - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 65: Bad Intentions - November 18, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Currently unknown
Comments: Rumors are currently going around that Tim Sylvia could face Jerome LeBanner possibly at Affliction 3 next year. LeBanner and Sylvia have had a war of words going on between the two the last few years and tons of people have been dying to see this fight. LeBanner is only 3-1-1 as a pro in MMA and hasn't fought in 2 years, however his kickboxing record is 90-15-1-1. This fight would be an awesome stand-up war, and would put an end to their feud. A feud that started when LeBanner and his manager made comments regarding Sylvia's striking abilities. Needless to say, LeBanner isn't impressed with Sylvia.
9) Mirko Cro Cop (23-6-2)
Height: 6'2
Weight: 220
Currently fighting with: DREAM
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Tatsuya Mizuno - Win via TKO (punches) - DREAM: Heiwa Dream 1 - March 15, 2008
- vs. Cheick Kongo - Loss via decision (unanimous) - UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion - September 8, 2007
- vs. Gabriel Gonzaga - Loss via KO (head kick) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007
- vs. Eddie Sanchez - Win via TKO (punches) - UFC 67: All or Nothing - February 3, 2007
- vs. Josh Barnett - Win via submission (strikes) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Alistair Overeem - DREAM 6 - September 23, 2008
Comments: It's FINALLY been booked. Cro Cop vs. Alistair Overeem will finally happen this month! If you aren't looking forward to this fight than perhaps you should get your man card taken away. This one should be a war. I'm just glad that Comcast is finally going to carry HDnet so perhaps I will finally be able to see a DREAM event! GO ME!
10) Frank Mir (11-3)
Height: 6'1
Weight: 240
Currently fighting with: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Brock Lesnar - Win via submission (knee bar) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008
- vs. Antoni Hardonk - Win via submission (kimura) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007
- vs. Brandon Vera - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 65: Bad Intentions - November 18, 2006
- vs. Dan Christison - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 61: Bitter Rivals - July 8, 2006
- vs. Marcio Cruz - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 57: Liddell vs. Couture 3 - February 4, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - UFC 92 - December 27, 2008
Comments: Can Frank Mir defeat Big Nog and become the NEW UFC interim heavyweight champion? Imagine this....what if Mir defeats Big Nog, and Lesnar defeats Couture. We will then see Lesnar vs. Mir to unify the UFC heavyweight titles. Wouldn't that be something? It would give Brock a chance to redeem his loss to Mir. But of course that is a HUGE if! Personally I'm rooting for a possible Couture/Big Nog fight. But then again, what hardcore MMA fan isn't?

Before I leave you all, I'd like to take this time and remember those we lost on September 11, 2001. It's a day that I will never forget as long as I live. Take some time out of this day and remember those people who lost their lives due to this horrible tragedy.
Honest question: Not saying you can't like the guys, but what's up with everyone's top five favorite MMA fighters including the same overly dominant people (BJ, GSP, Fedor, A. Silva, Rampage, and to a lesser extent Couture and Machida)? You don't really see this in any other sport. Most hardcore fans from them hate the Kobes, Tom Bradys, and A-Rods of the world.

"Don't let the punch that Lesnar landed on Herring fool you. Couture is NOT Heath Herring."

You're right... unlike Herring, Couture has been KO'ed.

ok, not being argumentative or anything, but can someone please explain the whole "Werdum is screwed" mentality?
His loss to Arlovski was kalib starnes level embarrassing. He got hurt early and then refused to truly engage, didn't even bother trying to get the fight on the ground by the end.
He follows up embarrassing loss to arlovski by beating two guys with 0 fight winstreaks, one of whom is now at 205 the other got the justin mccully rehab treatment.
Werdum is a fine fighter, but how do his three ufc fights entitle him to number one contendership status? Don't get me wrong, he should be in the mix no doubt, but clear cut number one contender? I don't get it.

I kinda have to agree w romano. I think Werdum deserces the shot more than Lesnar, but I still can't justify calling him a clear cut #1 contender. Nice article though, I always enjoy reading these rankings.

Pretty sure you violated one of you r rules for the ranking with your number 3 ranked heavyweight. Couture hasn't fought in over a year.. Or does the announcement of a future fight count as being active?

I got Lesnar up to an 85 rating on Madden
Now thats a feat
Posted By: cfrm (Guest) on September 11, 2008 at 02:27 PM
According to your rules Couture can't be ranked as He has not had a fight in over a year!
Posted By: Bill (Guest) on September 11, 2008 at 02:34 PM
"- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked."

Not a single mention of Ben Rothwell on there, eh?

Interesting favorite fighter list. Mine goes as follows:
10. Shane Carwin
09. Gray Maynard
08. Forrest Griffin
07. Jon Fitch
06. Wanderlei Silva
05. Miguel Angel Torres
04. Brock Lesnar
03. Josh Koscheck
02. Dan Henderson
01. Randy Couture - the first UFC I remember watching, Randy won the heavyweight tournament. After watching the bio pieces they had on the show, he became something of a hero to me, and I've followed him ever since. His return to the UFC last week was probably the best news I've heard all year (in spite of getting two promotions, getting engaged, and my sister getting married).
Yeah, my list is pretty wrestler-heavy, but being a former wrestler (and boxer) myself, those are the guys I can most closely identify with. As for my least favorite fighters:
10. Fedor Emelianenko - Let me say that I believe Fedor is easily the best heavyweight in the world right now and quite possibly ever, and he's always struck me a decent, respectful guy. But the way so many fanboys on the internet are so quick to verbally fellate him irritates me to the point that I get nearly physically ill every time he's got a fight announced. If it weren't for that, he'd probably be my favorite fighter.*
09. George St. Pierre - something about him just irritates me. Can't explain it, but he's an awesome, awesome fighter.
08. Karo Parisyan - Lazy. Utterly talented, but entirely too lazy to ever do anything with it. BJ Penn would actually be higher than Karo, but since he last return, he's actually seemed motivated and willing to to train.
07. Tito Ortiz - It's great that you were once the most dominant guy in the UFC. That was a half-decade ago - either get over it, or re-invent yourself so that you're actually still relevant (a la Randy Couture).
06. Kalib Starnes
05. Chuck Liddell
04. (tie) Nate Diaz - See #3, only slightly less annoying.
04. (tie) Nick Diaz - you'll never find a bigger group of infantile, ignorant apologists than the Nick Diaz fans. Invariably defending every classless move by the utterly classless Diaz brothers as being "badass", these morons try to glorify every mistake the two puerile siblings from Compton make.
02. Sean Sherk - Boring. And he used steroids, got caught, and lied about it. At least Hermes Franca told the truth.
01. Tim Sylvia - Just a boring, boring fighter, not unlike number 2 on my list.
*I call this "Pittsburgh Steeler" syndrome. I grew up about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh, in a town full of rabid (and largely ignorant) Steeler fans. This turned me against the quote-unquote hometown team and to the Cincinnati Bengals, as much because they're a division rival of Pittsburgh as because my dad's entire family is from about halfway between Cincinnati and Columbus

Fedor should always be #1, idiots
Posted By: cenasucks (Guest) on September 11, 2008 at 04:47 PM
I don't know about Frank Mir being #10 but if beating a guy who is 2-1 puts you at #10 then what do I know?? I also notice that you didn't have Sergei Kharitonov listed at all for "on the bubble".

Tim Sylvia is still in the top 10?!?!?!
Is Muhammad Ali still heavyweight champ?
When are Jordan and the Bulls playin next?

Actually it does. Nog has faced better competition, has a better record, and Randy hasn't fought in over a year.
