The Ground and Pound 9.12.08: Checkmated
Posted by John Curry on 09.12.2008
This week the Ground and Pound takes a look at a new company’s ideology and the new Jui Jitsu training method known as Chess Game Fighting! Plus, Evan Tanner’s passing and thoughts on Affliction cancelling their show.
As with anything in the field of Mixed Martial Arts there are always inspirations and new methods that peak my interest and influence my writing styles. This past week I was introduced to a new clothing company that prides themselves on promoting a the cerebral aspects of MMA by wearing one of the most innovative styles of Jui Jitsu that they call Chess Game Fighting.
Now many of you are wondering what exactly is Chess Game Fighting. I was introduced by Chess Game Fight Gear's Jeff Baker to Brooks Doran of Kevin Cincotta at Villaris in Biddeford, Maine, who is a practitioner of the Chess Game fighting. After discussing the whole premise of what it is and doing some research on my own, I decided to share what the entire process is and why it should continue to be supported and implemented in gyms all across the country.
For many people who are not familiar with the strategy of chess, the common strategy is to be able to foresee your opponent's game plan three moves in advance. The goal is to be able to train your mind to automatically analyze your own game plan as well as adapt and adjust to the potential changes that could possibly arise. Now take yourself from the chess board to the mat. The same concept is found here. The goal is to train your mind and your body to immediately react and plan three physical moves ahead of your opponent without thinking.
Kind of like this…………………………
How is this done you may ask? Two fighters hit the mat to roll with one another. One fighter selects a position to begin, such as the half-guard. Each fighter can only move their body one position at a time. With every move that is made the opponent reacts to that move and this pattern continues until one person submits the other. This is then repeated over and over again and in different positions as the mind and body develop an automatic reaction to specific positions of their opponent's body so that they can maximize their submission opportunities by being three steps ahead of their traditionally trained Jui Jitsu opponents. That is the most advantageous aspect of training in the Chess Game fight style. You will develop a different specific feel to every move that is attempted on you and you will have the upper hand in any ground game.

My thoughts on Evan Tanner.
Look I don't want to dilute his memory by saying something sappy and fake about Evan just because he died. The guy was an inspiration for anyone who wanted to train themselves in MMA. He was just the John Everyman who had the balls to make his dream come true. Sadly, Tanner's last fight did not show the new fans of the sport the Tanner we fans grew to love and unless we show the videos they will never know. So without further ado let the guys fights be his own memoriam.
REAL FIGHTERS NEVER DIE, THEIR OPPONENTS JUST CHANGE
Affliction keeps making Dana White look good.
This isn't going to be long at all. To the folks in the upper offices of Affliction, I have already had a knockdown argument with you about you being out of touch with your MMA fans by charging all that damn money for your shirts. Now I am going to tell you plain and simple stop blowing your money, all of your money on events just to cancel them and move them to another time. Look, your floor fell out when Randy went back to the UFC after resolving his lack of challenging opponents, move on but don't shoot yourself in the foot. You had a decent Pay-Per-View event although many of the casual fans didn't really get the greatest of fights from those they knew. Don't blow it now by playing scared.
Sorry there is no Remember this Fist this week. Just didn't have time to holler at everyone to see if anyone was interested. So until next week don't forget to leave your comments and head over and join my Ground and Pound Army at John Curry's Myspace. NO ONE IS DENIED!!
