411's MMA Rankings 10.09.08: Pound For Pound
Posted by Dustin James on 10.09.2008

Welcome back children to the best set of MMA rankings on this here Intraweb. As always I'm here to fill you in on who exactly are the best pound-for-pound fighters currently running around in the wonderful world of MMA. After watching Kimbo Slice get destroyed by Seth Petruzlelli in 14 seconds, I was really tempted to put Petruzelli at #1 just because he made me so happy. But I had to resist the temptation! I couldn't put Petro (my new nickname for him) amongst the best in MMA just yet. He has to get a few more big wins under his belt before we just MOVE him on up....doesn't he?

The only way to find out is to keep reading.......

BUT FIRST~!

Did you miss my debut edition of The Ultimate Writer right here on 411? If so, shame on you. What else do you have to do on Sunday besides watch NFL football, track your stats for Fantasy Football, make sure all of your pick'ems are correct, curse and throw things at the TV because the Kansas City Chiefs suck so bad.....oh, that's just me? Well check it out anyways!

OK, now it's time.......

411's MMA Ranking Rules

- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.

- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.

- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we could probably beat up my little nieces. They are tougher than they look though, they take KARATE~!

1) Anderson Silva (22-4)

Height: 6'2

Birthday: April 14, 1975

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. James Irvin - Win via KO (punches) - UFC: Fight Night 14 - July 19, 2008

- vs. Dan Henderson - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 82: Pride of a Champion - March 1, 2008

- vs. Rich Franklin - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 77: Hostile Territory - October 20, 2007

- vs. Nathan Marquardt - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7, 2007

- vs. Travis Lutter - Win via submission (triangle choke) - UFC 67: All or Nothing - February 3, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Patrick Cote - UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" - October 25, 2008

Comments: I know it sounds redundant now, but another rankings list featuring Anderson Silva just means it's another #1 spot for "The Spider". We are just a few weeks away from watching Silva dismantle Cote at UFC 90. Oh, did you get the impression that I'm not giving Cote a chance? Trust me, I'm giving him a chance. It's just a REALLY REALLY slim one. Good luck Cote, you are going to need it.

2) Fedor Emelianenko (28-1)

Height: 6'0

Weight: 233

Currently fighting with: Affliction

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Affliction "Banned" - July 19, 2008

- vs. Hong Man Choi - Win via submission (arm bar) - Yarennoka - New Year's Eve 2007 - December 31, 2007

- vs. Matt Lindland - Win via submission (arm bar) - BodogFight: Clash of the Nations - April 14, 2007

- vs. Mark Hunt - Win via submission (kimura) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Mark Coleman - Win via submission (arm bar) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. To Be Announced - Affliction: Day Of Reckoning - January 2009

Comments: So, who is Fedor going to face at Affliction's next show in 2009? There are plenty of rumors going around, but at least one of them has been squashed. It seems that Josh Barnett is having some sort of contract dispute with Affliction which will prevent him from facing Fedor, meaning we may finally get the Andrei Arlovski/Fedor Emelianenko fight that some of us wanted to see after Affliction "Banned" earlier this year. Good luck Andrei. After watching you fight Roy "Big Country" Nelson and Ben Rothwell, you are going to need to step it up a bit in order to train for Fedor. The man isn't even human, he's a cyborg!

3) Georges St. Pierre (17-2)

Height: 5'10

Birthday: May 19, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Jon Fitch - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 87: Seek And Destroy - August 9, 2008

- vs. Matt Serra - Win via TKO (knees to body) - UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre II - April 19, 2008

- vs. Matt Hughes - Win via verbal submission (arm bar) - UFC 79: Nemesis - December 29, 2007

- vs. Josh Koscheck - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 74: Respect - August 25, 2007

- vs. Matt Serra - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 69: Shootout - April 7, 2007

Next scheduled appereance:

- vs. BJ Penn - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn - January 31, 2009

Comments: St. Pierre solidified a top spot in the Pound for Pound rankings after defeating Jon Fitch in impressive fashion at UFC 87 last August. Now he is looking toward a showdown with fellow top P4P fighter BJ Penn! We are still a few months away, but trust me when I say this.....this fight will be one of the best you have ever seen. Penn is a much different fighter than when they first met a few years back and will most definitely BRING IT. I can't wait.

4) B.J. Penn (13-4-1)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: December 13, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Sean Sherk - Win via TKO (knees and punches) - UFC 84: Ill Will - May 24, 2008

- vs. Joe Stevenson - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008

- vs. Jens Pulver - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale - June 6, 2007

- vs. Matt Hughes - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 63: Hughes vs. Penn - September 23, 2006

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 58: USA vs. Canada - March 4, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Georges St. Pierre - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn - January 31, 2009

Comments: See: St. Pierre, Georges

5) Urijah Faber (21-1)

Height: 5'6

Birthday: May 14, 1979

Currently Fighting With: WEC

Last 5 Fights:

- vs. Jens Pulver - Win via decision (unanimous) - WEC 34: Sacramento - June 1, 2008

- vs. Jeff Curran - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - WEC 31 - Faber vs. Curran - December 12, 2007

- vs. Chance Farrar - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - WEC 28 - WrekCage - June 3, 2007

- vs. Dominic Cruz - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - WEC 26 - Las Vegas - March 24, 2007

- vs. Joe Pearson - Win via submission (strikes) - WEC 25 - Las Vegas - January 20, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Mike Brown - WEC 36 - November 5, 2008

Comments: Urijah Faber's fight against Mike Brown that was originally scheduled for September 10 was moved back to November 5 due to Hurricane Ike. All I can say is, does it matter when they hold this fight? Watch for Faber to destroy Brown and perhaps the WEC will schedule a "dream fight" between Faber and WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres. Both fighters are in the Pound for Pound rankings and would just add to the awesomeness that the MMA promoters have brought us these last few months. Zuffa in particular.

6) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria (31-4-1)

Height: 6'3

Weight: 231

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - UFC 81: Breaking Point - February 2, 2008

- vs. Heath Herring - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7th, 2007

- vs. Josh Barnett - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Josh Barnett - Loss via decision (split) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Frank Mir - UFC 92: Mir vs. Nogueria - December 27, 2008

Comments: Nogueria has impressed me thus far with his stint as coach on this season of "The Ultimate Fighter". He has shown that he has a good personality and it seems that he REALLY wants his fighters to succeed. In past seasons of "The Ultimate Fighter" it seems like it's been more about the coaches making themselves look good rather than making their fighters look good. At least Big Nog gets it. The show isn't entirely about him, and it should be more about his fighters. Hell, you could have a future UFC champion on that show. Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans anyone?

7) Miguel Torres (34-1)

Height: 5'9

Birthday: January 18, 1981

Currently Fighting With: WEC

Last 5 Fights:

- vs. Yoshiro Maeda - Win via TKO (doctor stoppage) - WEC 34: Sacramento - June 1, 2008

- vs. Chase Beebe - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - WEC 32: Albuquerque - February 13, 2008

- vs. Jeff Bedard - Win via submission (triangle choke) - WEC 30: Las Vegas - September 5, 2007

- vs. Darius Turcinskas - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - IMMAC 2: Attack - April 21, 2007

- vs. Charles Wilson - Win via submission (triangle choke) - TFC 7 - February 10, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

-vs. Manny Tapia - WEC 37 - December 3, 2008

Comments: WEC officially announced that Torres will defend his WEC Bantamweight Championship against the undefeated Manny Tapia at WEC 37 in December. This should be an excellent fight and if Torres can come away with the win and Faber can win next month, look for WEC to possibly schedule a "dream fight" between Torres and Faber like I mentioned previously. Why not? It's the trend right now in MMA and Zuffa should just keep it rolling.

8) Lyoto Machida (13-0)

Height: 6'1

Birthday: May 3, 1978

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 84: Ill Will - May 24, 2008

- vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou - Win via submission (arm triangle choke) - UFC 79: Nemesis - December 29, 2007

- vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007

- vs. David Heath - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007

- vs. Sam Hoger - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 67: All or Nothing - February 3, 2007

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Thiago Silva - UFC 93: Henderson vs. Franklin - January 17, 2008

Comments: MMA fans caught a break recently. A few weeks back Thiago Silva was forced out of his UFC 89 fight against Lyoto Machida due to an injury and I know tons of MMA fans that were bummed with that decision. Luckily the UFC caught wind of it and rescheduled the fight for UFC 93 in January. Whew! This was a fight I really wanted to see and I was one of those fans that was bummed to the bone when I found out about Silva's injury. Both of these fighters are undefeated and one of them is about to make a real big impact in the UFC's light heavyweight division. Will it be Silva or Machida? Only time will tell.

9) Takanori Gomi (29-3)

Height: 5'8

Birthday: September 22, 1978

Currently Fighting With: Sengoku

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Seung Hwan Bang - Win via decision (unanimous) - August 24, 2008

- vs. Duane Ludwig - Win via TKO (cut) - World Victory Road - Sengoku - March 5, 2008

- vs. Nick Diaz - No contest (originally lost via submission) - PRIDE 33: The Second Coming - February 24, 2007

- vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida - Win via TKO (strikes) - PRIDE Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Marcus Aurelio - Win via decision (split) - PRIDE: Bushido 13 - November 5, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Currently unknown

Comments: After fighting only once in 2007, Gomi fans got a little lucky in 2008 because the man has fought TWICE! WOOOO! Can we possibly get a third fight out of Gomi this year? With Sengoku holding an event every month, it wouldn't surprise me. Anytime I get a chance to see Gomi fight, it's a good time.

10) Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3)

Birthday: November 25, 1981

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

- vs. Forrest Griffin - Loss via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007

- vs. Alistair Overeem - Win via KO (strikes) - PRIDE 33: Second Coming - February 24, 2007

- vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006

- vs. Kevin Randleman - Win via submission (kneebar) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006

- vs. Cyrille Diabate - Win via TKO (stomps) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006

Next scheduled appearance:

- vs. Mark Coleman - UFC 93: Henderson vs. Franklin - January 17, 2008

Comments: It's about time! Shogun must have heard my threats about removing him from the rankings due to inactivity because the guy has finally scheduled a fight! Shogun will face UFC hall-of-famer Mark Coleman at UFC 93 in January. Coleman hasn't fought in the UFC since UFC 18 back in 1999. His last fight was in 2006 where he lost to Fedor Emelianenko at PRIDE 32. Before that, Coleman fought Shogun in a fight that ended in 49 seconds due to Shogun suffering a broken arm. One thing is for sure. This is a MUST win for Shogun. At one time he was considered a Top 5 P4P guy and was #1 in the light heavyweight division. However, the man loses to Forrest Griffin and doesn't fight in a year and all of a sudden people want to drop him from the list entirely. Huh???? Do you not know the history of Shogun Rua? I'm personally not dropping Shogun from any list until I get to see the man fight again and redeem himself. However, if Coleman is able to defeat Shogun again that could be the last we see of Shogun in the UFC, and that my friends.....makes my heart cry.

On The Bubble:

(On the bubble includes fighter's who may not be in the Top 10, but remain a threat in their weight division)

In the LHW rankings forrest is ranked higher than machida but here machida is ranked higher?!?!!

Are you on some kind of kool-aid?

Posted By: Guest#6042 (Guest)  on October 08, 2008 at 10:59 PM

You didn't mention Jacksons lost to Griffin.

Yeah i smell SHENANIGANS!!

Posted By: Guest#0710 (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 12:06 AM

Of course Forrest isnt rated above Machida when we all know Griffin or Evans is keeping the belt warm for him.

Posted By: Brad (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 01:10 AM

Pound for pound doesn't apply to CURRENT RANKINGS hence why Machida is higher than Griffin. PFP is applying the skills and abilities of fighters so that they translate to any weight class. Hence Machida stands a way better chance than Griffen does if his skills scaled down to 155 or up to HW.

Posted By: Craig (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 02:13 AM

Based on that description of P4P, then Brock Lesnar should be #1 cause he can knock out (and crush the face of) ANYONE with a single punch, just ask the Crazy Horse.

Posted By: King Durin (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Shogun hasn't fought in over a year, you stated that yourself and yet he makes the list??
Gomi is listed below Nogueria and Machida??
No way Kid Yamamoto is below Griffin and Rampage, he's dominated his division like Fabre.
There's more I could add to this, but we all know that this list is full of shit and that 411 writers are the worst at putting together rankings. - Nuff Said

Posted By: jj Abraham (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 10:40 AM

Dan Henderson??? Where's Rich?? Rich has beaten everyone in the middleweight division that he has ever faced except for Silva, he should be on this list at least until his next fight with Hendo. Where's all the guys from the Dream grand prix's?? If you're going to put Aoki you need the include the guy that beat him.
This list makes no sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted By: Bustanut (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 10:53 AM

It's a crying shame they don't send Machida out to fight more often.

Posted By: Bill B. (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Hey Dusty, how about a ranking session, where you and the boys rank Female competitors.. Surely there are enough to warrant a top five, maybe a top ten.

Posted By: Toddo (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Nice list! I'd move Penn under Faber and switch Griffin with Machida, but thats about it.

Posted By: guest guest (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 01:20 PM

STILL NO LOVE FOR SUGAR!!!!!
undefeated, just made chuck look silly, is way better then rampage, gun, and I would bet he could hang with GSP, and The Spider

wow you guys are getting fucking retarded. Didnt i see Shogun get choked the fuck out by a guy lower on the list than him. And watching that fight forest was winning before he put that bitch to sleep. Silva is great but Fedor is the best pound for pound in the world. end of story. its just amazing how yall pull these names outta your asses for this. and what the hell is with Forrest being lower than Machida. I'm shocked that you didnt have evans higher on there.

Posted By: dishsoap (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 07:30 PM

im not sure who put these rankings together, but they are all wrong except for the top 4, and those are no brainers. and yeah, silva is number 1, he has beaten better fighters(repeatedly) and has yet to go to decision.

Posted By: george (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 10:06 PM

shogun ranked way too high. he may have some good days in pride but what has he done lately? not much...

Posted By: bobalu (Guest)  on October 09, 2008 at 10:38 PM

I cant complain about the top 9 but Rua over a man that has beat him and Jackson in back to back fights
COME ON!!!!!

Posted By: lamb (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 12:26 AM

How IN HELL is SHOGUN in this RANKING while he has done absolutely NOTHING outside of TAPING OUT LIKE A LITTLE BITCH TO Forrest F'N Griffin !!!!!

And of course FEDOR ONLY Number 2 is the usual 411 MANIA TRAVESTY.....

Posted By: Guest#6443 (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 07:12 PM

Fedor not being number 1 already makes this list look like a joke. I hate that when people make these types of listts that rank things they always put the obvious #1 (and Fedor is the obvious #1) at #2 or #3. Its either a ploy to shock people or just to be "hip" (not really). Jesus, ask any MMA fan that knows anything about the sport who the best fighter is and they'll say Fedor.

Posted By: J.J.T. (Guest)  on October 10, 2008 at 10:25 PM

I can't believe that Fedor would beat GSP or Penn if he was their weight. This is P4P not relative to their own weight class. GSP and Penn are far more well rounded than Fedor. No one in Hwt comes close to Fedor but does he have welterweight tools? Not in my opinion.

Posted By: jr1977 (Guest)  on October 12, 2008 at 02:39 PM

How can you rank Rua so high? Yeah he had some wins in Pride but it isn't the UFC. The Pride "stars" have a history of coming to the UFC and getting beaten. You were probably on the Sokoudjou bandwagon also. He's probably 9th or 10th just in UFC rankings. In MMA it should be "what have you done for me lately" because you constantly have to prove yourself and he hasn't. Here's some people who could probably beat him.

F. Griffin
Q. Jackson
L. Machida
R. Evans
R. Franklin
C. Liddell
W. Silva
K. Jardine
Ti. Silva
